The site is about to be re-developed so it was a rare chance to see a British Regional Seat of Government bunker that has lain relatively untouched since the end of the Cold War. The voices you will hear are Dan Cordle, an Expert in Nuclear Culture & History and Parmi Uppal, Estates Manager for Homes England. What a shitshow. What do courage and resilience truly mean?As the anniversary of D-Day approaches, I reflect on the incredible bravery of the 'Greatest Generation' during World War II, drawing inspiration from my visits to historic locations such as Auschwitz and Churchill's War Rooms in London. From blackouts to rationing, the everyday experiences of European civilians during WWII serve as a testament to human resilience. In the film Saving Private Ryan, a dying Captain Miller says to Matt Damon's character: "Earn this." He was also speaking to us.We have a responsibility to earn the lives that other people died for. In this episode, I talk about how we can do this by showing up as Stoic leaders and embodying courage, wisdom, moderation, and justice in our own lives. By giving ourselves space to think and show up as our best selves, we can strive to live a life of meaning that honors the sacrifices of the Greatest Generation.https://sarahmikutel.com/

Taylor Owen is a professor of public policy at the Max Bell School of Public Policy at McGill university, and his research focuses mainly on tech regulation. This episode, he and Elizabeth define and categorize types of regulation. They discuss what tech regulation looks like, how lobbying impacts tech regulation, why regulation of tech is difficult, and the balance governments (both in Canada and internationally) must grapple with between regulation options and public good. This episode, recorded in January 2022, does not explore current legislation or the nitty gritty of the regulatory options. However, Elizabeth and Taylor provide the background for understanding what the options are and why regulation and self-regulation happen.Additional ResourcesElizabeth draws on this article to form her list of types of regulationTaylor mentions how many of these big tech companies are so many things, making them difficult to regulate. He uses the example of facebook launching a digital currency and Amazon launching health care services. Taylor and Elizabeth discuss Canada's tech lobby. Here is an article (from former Wonks and War Rooms guest Megan Beretta) that further delves into how tech lobbying shapes federal policy.Elizabeth and Taylor address Canada's online harms bill. This article gives an overview of the status of that bill. This page also gives an overview of the steps the government is taking to address online harms (including the creation of the advisory committee which Taylor was recently appointed to).Taylor mentions the EU's Digital Service Act as a model that focuses on risk assessment. This article gives an overview of that legislation. Want to hear more from Taylor? HOUR 1 - Seth and Sean react to the Astros home opener, NFL War Rooms taking Lovie Smith's quote about needing to get better at CB to heart, and sift through Peter King's draft nuggets.
This episode is an audio version of a special live taping of Wonks and War Rooms, in partnership with uOttawa's Centre for Law, Technology and Society, where Elizabeth is joined by a panel of journalists to tackle a tough topic: online harassment of journalists and what it means for our democracy. Rosemary Barton is the Chief Political Correspondent for CBC News; Fatima Syed is a reporter for the Narwhal and host of Canadaland podcast The Backbench; and Mark Blackburn is the social media and online producer at APTN. Elizabeth and the panel look at different types of online negativity, the motivations behind harassment and attacks, and the impacts of weaponizing media. They also talk about different ways of managing online harassment, and how to balance their responsibilities as journalists with protecting themselves as individuals.Additional ResourcesOff the top, Rosemary and Elizabeth mention the day of the live event was not exactly a slow news day. Here's why. This topic brings a bunch of terms that get jumbled together: harassment, abuse, toxicity, negativity, incivility, hate speech, intolerance. This Public Policy Forum report provides a framework for thinking about harmful communication online.Fatima talks about “chilling effects” that online harassment can have on journalists. Here's a report from earlier this year about these kinds of impacts, published by The Canadian Journalism Foundation and the Canadian Association of Journalists. Also, last fall IPSOS ran the first Canadian survey on online harassment against journalists and media professionals, which showed it is “prevalent and pervasive.” Here are the results.Rosemary and Elizabeth discuss trolling and how it has changed over time. This article by Silvio Waisbord looks at the specific impact trolls have on journalism.Rosemary mentions that the pandemic has been a turning point for journalism. This special issue of Digital Journalism has a collection of articles on all the ways that COVID-19 has impacted the work of journalists over the past few years.Check out www.polcommtech.ca for annotated transcripts of this episode in English and French.
Sean Speer is the Editor-At-Large at The Hub, a Senior Fellow at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, and previously served as Senior Advisor to Prime Minister Stephen Harper. He and Elizabeth chat about political polarization and dig into the different theories of polarization including elite polarization and mass polarization, as well as ideological versus affective polarization. They discuss the idea of politics as a left-to-right spectrum, polarization causing artificial divides, the rise of populism, and the idea that polarization can be used as a tool for meaningful progress.Additional ResourcesInterested in learning more about political polarization from an academic perspective? This systematic review by Kubin & von Sikorski is a good place to start.Elizabeth mentions two past episodes of Wonks and War Rooms: this episode about issue ownership with Tiffany Gooch and this episode about the high-choice media environment with Jane Lytvynenko.Sean speaks about how Canadian campaign finance regimes might contribute to political polarization. This article gives a brief overview of how political parties are financed in Canada. Sean and Elizabeth spend some time discussing the link between populism and polarization. This video shows what the rise of modern populism is all about.Check out www.polcommtech.ca for annotated transcripts of this episode in English and French.

Earlier this spring, ideas were thrown in different directions with intentions of examining diverse ways where battle lines define boundaries between regions and states as followers seek out peak competition. If some people ever ended their NYC visit way too quick, then smaller city surroundings about two hours southwest by car called Philadelphia, PA may have gone unnoticed along U.S. East Coastal shores. Geography aside, allegiances with immortal athletic human beings that called a city of brotherly love home like Sixers' great Allen Iverson only to follow up with traveling in purposely finding one Bx, tri-state prodigy like Kyrie Irving, then people can appreciate deep love for sports by journeys that individuals forge all their lives. Even though bad blood spills each time NY Giants and Eagles contingencies collide, permanent tattoos showing our hometown teams will shine. Try to become acquainted with Besek, hailing straight from greater Pennsylvania for a better understanding of his loyalty since childhood which stemmed from watching his heroes on screen(0:00). Our boy VJ stops through as NFL draft hopes and team philosophy are set straight where two metropolises connect in rare circumstances(13:45). Also, polling must determine whether pizza is greater, less than, or equal to a cheesesteak.(44:08)
The Godfather of Technical Analysis, Ralph Acampora, CMT joins Fill the Gap for a conversation about the history of markets, and market technicians. As the co-founder of the “MTA” in the late 1960s, Ralph's passion for the discipline of technical market analysis has not waned a bit in his 50-year career on Wall Street. Discussing long-term secular market trends and periods of extended market expansion, Ralph shares that we may be in a fifth “Mega Market” cycle. Comparing historical periods of great economic expansion, Ralph coined the term to describe post-war market rallies in his book “The Fourth Mega Market” which he penned in the 1990s. As the world slowly begins to emerge from the COVID pandemic, the massive injection of funding for research to fight the virus will likely be commercialized in the period ahead, helping extend a global bull market over the coming years. Ralph opens up about his lifelong passion for historical study, his experience computing indicators and plotting charts by hand in the windowless “War Rooms” of the 1960s and 70s, and gaining direct advice from veteran technical analysts such as Ralph Rotnem and Ken Ward in his early career. These were the giants upon whose shoulders the technical community was built. Ralph references his personal Chart Museum, as well as other moments when the CMT Association library played a key role in expanding global finance knowledge. Ralph's riveting stories about his accidental start in finance, as well as the contributions he's made to the discipline of technical analysis over the last five decades, provide critical insight and context for market technicians operating in today's digital-first environment. To better understand the concepts he references, we recommend you review the supplemental resources accompanying this episode using this link: go.cmtassociation.org/ftge6
Today I get to share with y’all a really incredible conversation with my friends Brett and Jana Aplin. Brett and Jana are the dynamic duo that make up Aplins in the Alps, and they share the super sweet story behind their God dreams, and also their passion for travel and the international church. This episode unpacks the power of the Gospel in the lives of those who say yes to Jesus. Bret and Jana’s story is such a powerful picture of the Spirit of God at work around the world in these days following Pentecost and celebrating the birth of the Church. Brett and Jana’s story is such an inspiring, powerful, and encouraging picture of the Spirit of God at work around the world in these days following Pentecost and celebrating the birth of the Church. Since our chat a few weeks ago, they are now indeed in Switzerland, sharing their adventures on their instagram page, and they launched their YouTube page! You can find links to connect with them, and even find ways to support them in the show notes. And they can always use prayer!! While you’re praying for them, I wonder if you would be bold enough to ask the Lord where He might be leading you? Could He be prompting you to find ways to press in to where you are, or might He be calling you to go somewhere and be present there? I love how they point out in this conversation that there’s so much beauty in both the commission to “go and tell”, and also the invitation to “come and see.” The Lord will make Himself known in your story, just as He has in theirs.
