This transition is not only combating the climate crisis but creating inclusive new job opportunities and saving money for property owners and tenants. BlocPower is leading the charge to replace and retrofit dated and dangerous heating and cooling systems with electric heat pumps in residential and commercial buildings. Fast Company recognized BlocPower for its transformational technology, naming it the 4th Most Innovative Company in the World in 2022. While technological innovations to lower greenhouse gas emissions in real estate are here – what lies ahead is the challenge of mass adoption. Most regulation around the environmental impact of the built environment is focused on new construction. While important, the built environment is the 4th largest emitter of greenhouse gasses not because of new builds, but mostly because of the inefficient and unhealthy older buildings. Jordan and Keith discuss why addressing this part of the problem is crucial to combat the worst effects of climate change: Why heat pumps are an important part of the equation to reducing emissions in buildingsHow the Inflation Reduction will play a key role in electrifying older buildings and what programs are available to fund the transitionHow to electrify old construction to meet the current moment, and in doing so improve health, increase building value, and lower costs for owners and tenantsHow environmental justice and equity will be pivotal to the transition, and how BlocPower  is integrating them into its businessLearn more about how BlocPower is building opportunity in high-gun violence neighborhoods by preparing 1,000 talented individuals for a career in climate technology with its Civilian Climate Corps and partnership with NYC. The Senate, by a vote of 50 to 49, conferred its approval on a $3.5 trillion budget resolution that paves the way for the hugely ambitious economic package Biden has long promised to make a reality. As Clare Foran and Ali Zaslev detail in article on CNN, Senate Democrats cast their vote in favor of the package after a long series of so-called amendment votes. It is now up to the House to pass the budget resolution. Pillars of the resolution include massive spending on infrastructure, job creation, aid to families, and environmental programs. It is easily one of the most sweeping and ambitious domestic spending programs in American history, establishing a Civilian Climate Corps, implementing universal pre-K for three- and four-year-olds, and making community college tuition free for two years, among other provisions. It appears that in the view of CNN's authors, the liberal Democrat viewpoint is the only one that truly matters here. This package is what “people” want. Only fuddy-duddies with eccentric views would stop and ask what part of the Constitution says that government is to pay for community college or universal pre-K. Not very many people today would cite or even know the text of the Tenth Amendment, which explicitly delimits the functions and prerogatives of the federal government and stipulates that any powers not specifically granted to it under the Constitution belong to the states, or the people. Who cares about such nit-picking legal and Constitutional issues when the mobs to which Democrat politicians are beholden are clamoring for more of this and more of that. The Constitution is just a scrap of paper written by dead white men.Americans can never get enough of true crime, and the persistence of the Covid pandemic has not denied them the spectacle of seeing the notorious Robert Durst, heir to the Durst real estate fortune, put on trial in Los Angeles for the murder of friend Susan Berman. An August 10 Reuters article reminds readers how police in 2000 found the body of 55-year-old Berman in her Beverly Hills home shortly after the reopening of an investigation into the disappearance and presumed murder of Durst's wife, Kathleen McCormack Durst, in 1982. Durst is also the prime suspect in the killing of Morris Black, a neighbor in Texas, in 2001.The article dusts off the theory that Durst wanted Berman out of the picture because of what she might have been able to tell police about the fate of Kathleen. The Reuters article details how Durst's attorneys have taken a somewhat unusual step in putting the wheelchair-bound 78-year-old, who suffers from many ailments including bladder and esophageal cancer, kidney disease, high blood pressure, neuropathy, and osteoporosis, on the stand to answer tough and probing questions about his alleged role in Berman's death. The Biden Administration's American Jobs Plan is billed as an "infrastructure" package. But it's also something else: the most ambitious climate plan a U.S. president has ever proposed. So what's in it? And how can we make sure this plan avoids the fate of the last big climate bill (hint: it didn’t go well)? We talk to an architect of the Green New Deal and one of our favorite energy policy experts — and then Alex and Ayana make a terrifying phone call. Guests: Leah Stokes, Julian Brave NoiseCat Take Action: Call your members of Congress! As Ayana says, this is "a once in a lifetime opportunity to pass comprehensive, ambitious federal climate policy.” And as Dr. Leah Stokes said in our episode, now is the time! So call your members of Congress! If Alex and Ayana can do it, so can you! Don’t know who your member of Congress is? No problem! You can find out who your representative is here: https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative  This site has information on your senators: https://www.senate.gov/senators/senators-contact.htm  You’ll find phone numbers for members’ D.C. offices on their websites — or just call the Capitol switchboard! They can connect you directly with the office of your representative or senator: (202) 224-3121 Tips for calling: Make a plan! Jot down some notes to remember what you want to say. Introduce yourself and tell them you’re a constituent! Let them know that you’re a voter in their district — and your opinion matters. Tell them why you’re calling: It’s crucial that Congress take serious action on climate change this year to meet the U.S. target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030. Ask for something specific! Maybe: I’m really excited about the American Jobs Plan, and I think it’s really important to pass a strong clean electricity standard to get us on the path to 100% clean power / I love the idea of a Civilian Climate Corps and Congress should fully fund it / It’s really important to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles / Choose your own climate priority! Maybe it’s kelp farming... Leave your contact information. That’s it! You did it! Learn More Want to learn more about the American Jobs Plan? You can find the White House fact sheet here. Want to learn more about clean electricity standards? Our guest this week, Dr. Leah Stokes, laid out her vision along with Sam Ricketts of Evergreen Action in a Vox article: This popular and proven climate policy should be at the top of Congress’s to-do list: The case for a national clean electricity standard. You can find their full report advocating for a national clean electricity standard here: A Roadmap to 100% Clean Electricity by 2035 . Stopping climate change is back on the White House agenda. President Biden came into with the most ambitious climate change plans of any administration to date. He not only promised to reverse the Trump administration's regressive climate policies, including regulatory rollbacks and a withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, but also to push the United States farther on climate change action than it has ever gone before. He named climate change action as a top priority, right alongside the coronavirus pandemic, the economy, and racial justice. Rebecca Leber, Mother Jones' environmental politics and policy reporter, joined Jamilah King on the podcast this week to talk about Biden's executive orders and what they mean. "That was the first time we had a president enter office saying climate was that high of an ambition," says Rebecca Leber. ""Any one of these items on their own would be huge. But the fact that we're seeing them all together is even bigger." In his first few days in office, President Biden signed a series of executive orders to get the Untied States back into the Paris agreement, to pause the lease of fossil fuel on public lands, and to establish environmental justice in multiple federal agencies, including the Departments of State, Energy, and Treasury. He issued an executive order to set up a Civilian Climate Corps. He promised to get the United States on track to conserve 30 percent of lands and oceans by 2030. He directed federal agencies to eliminate subsidies to Big Oil and invest in clean energy solutions. His actions already seem to be prompting change in US industry. General Motors (GM) announced last week that it aims to move entirely into electric vehicle manufacturing by 2035.
