Today I talked to Jim Wilson about his book (co-authored with Paul Daugherty) Radically Human: How New Technology Is Transforming Business and Shaping Our Future (HBR Press, 2022). Technology has evolved from device intelligence to data intelligence (big data) to now the new stage of a more human-centric approach where the user/worker's needs, wants and biases are being taken into account to make technology easier to deploy and more of an equal partner. That's the progression Jim Wilson champions in this book and on-air conversation. Covid-19 ushered in not only a host of human behavior changes, e.g., hybrid work arrangements and the Great Resignation, the pandemic also spurred the Great Acceleration as companies rushed to adopt technology that will transform their business practices. How to do so in a way that will democratize technology, empowering employees and rewarding customers along the way, is the challenge that Wilson addresses here. After all, technology innovations that don't also safeguard and enhance trust will instead create “algorithm aversion,” and undercut the promise of how technology can benefit companies, societies and individuals alike. Jim Wilson is the Managing Director of Thought Leadership & Technology Research at Accenture Research. Jim speaks to business audiences worldwide, is a long-time contributor to the Harvard Business Review and has been cited as one of the top 50 Business Innovators by CODEX. Dan Hill, PhD, is the author of ten books and leads Sensory Logic, Inc. (https://www.sensorylogic.com). His newest book is Emotionomics 2.0: The Emotional Dynamics Underlying Key Business Goals. 10 Harsh Realities Shaping Our FutureIn this episode, Andrew Stotz identifies and explains 10 harsh realities shaping our future. Politicians created the mess we are in The Fed is going to crash the market Europe (esp. Germany) is destroying itself It's a US-Russia, not a Russia-Ukraine showdown Gov'ts pushed 100m people into poverty and starvation America openly states that China is enemy #1 The US, not China, is the biggest global threat World leaders are not nearly as wise as they may appear Mass refugee influx is being used as a political tool to cause social disruption Germany is rearming 77 years after WWII 1. Politicians created the mess we are inThey kept interest rates too low for too long. They shut down global economies, destroying supply chains and reducing the supply of goods. They borrowed to finance massive spending, and they produced unparalleled money printing. They bailed out the bond market in 2020. They allowed the war in Ukraine to escalate, causing food shortages. 2. The Fed is going to crash the marketThe Fed pumped up the stock market with a decade of ultra-low interest rates. This low-interest rate policy incentivized borrowing, leading to corporate malinvestment. Now the Fed is raising rates into what looks to be a recession. 3. Europe (esp. Germany) is destroying itselfGermany and Europe had no reason to stop oil and gas from Russia. They had been improving commercial relationships (Remember: Trade brings peace). Germany's transition to green energy didn't produce the energy needed to replace its fossil fuel and nuclear power wind-down. Rising energy prices are crippling German industry and consumers. 4. It's a US-Russia, not a Russia-Ukraine showdownThe US sees Russia as its arch-enemy and has been closing in on it since the 1991 break up of the Soviet Union. Since 2008, the US, through its proxy, NATO, has been trying to get on Russia's borders by bringing Georgia and Ukraine into NATO. Don't be deceived by US concern for Ukraine. Ukraine is just a means for the US to get at Russia. 3 April 2008: Bucharest Summit Declaration, Paragraph 23: “NATO welcomes Ukraine's and Georgia's Euro-Atlantic aspirations for membership in NATO…Today we make clear that we support these countries' applications for Membership Action Plan.” 5. Governments pushed 100 million people into poverty and starvationGlobal economy lockdowns were estimated to have pushed 100 million people into poverty. As many as 70 million of them are in India. Instead of negotiating peace, experts expect that the continued war in Ukraine will push 100 million people into starvation, most of them in Africa. All the while, the rich get richer at a faster pace. According to The Guardian, “The 400 richest Americans added $4.5tn to their wealth last year [2020], a 40% rise….” 6. America openly states that China is enemy #1China had considerable respect for America and US capitalism and benefits from being a friend, not an enemy of the US. The US Department of Defense now openly states that China is America's #1 enemy, and you can expect the US to pursue this policy until it provokes a war with China. “The Department will act urgently to sustain and strengthen deterrence, with the People's Republic of China (PRC) as our most consequential strategic competitor….” – US Department of Defense 7. The US, not China, is the biggest global threatUS gov't recognizes Taiwan as part of China. In January 1979, the US recognized the PRC as the sole legal gov't of China and acknowledged, but did not endorse, that Taiwan is part of China. Hong Kong was forcibly taken and established as a colony of the British Empire in 1841 and eventually handed back to China. Since 1986, the US has participated and interfered in the replacement of foreign governments, e.g., Afghanistan, Bolivia, Bosnia, Croatia, Haiti, Honduras, Iran, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Libya,...

New technologies, economic shifts, demographic changes, urbanization, and climate change are global trends that have a significant impact on society and the economy. They are also shaping the way people invest their money. While these megatrends offer investors a great way to tap into new markets and opportunities, how can they be effectively incorporated into portfolios? In this episode, Rusty and Robyn talk with Jeff Spiegel, Director, US Head of iShares Megatrend, Sector and International ETFs at BlackRock, a global asset manager and technology provider. At BlackRock, Jeff manages product, sales, and marketing for the Megatrend and International franchises. In this episode, Jeff talks with Rusty and Robyn about megatrend investing strategy, the general guidelines for incorporating megatrends into a portfolio, and the top three investment themes that investors need to keep an eye on in 2022. Key Takeaways [03:49] - What is a megatrend investing strategy? [05:39] - The role of technological breakthroughs in megatrend investing. [06:47] - How demographics and social change fit into the five megatrends. [10:23] - The difference between personalized medicine and precision medicine. [11:43] - Why rapid urbanization is a topic of interest today. [13:08] - How climate change and resource scarcity are both part of the megatrends. [15:00] - What investors should know about emerging global wealth. [16:39] - How thematic investing has performed over the past couple of years. [21:05] - How iShares views megatrend ETF returns and risks. [23:59] - General guidelines for incorporating megatrends into a portfolio. [27:29] - The top three investment themes that investors need to keep an eye on in 2022. [32:28] - How Jeff's knowledge and expertise influence his personal investing. [33:46] - How Jeff maintains his physical and mental health. Quotes [24:03] - "A great investor, a great financial advisor, or a great institutional investor who's thinking holistically about their portfolio starts with asset allocation. That's the name of the game in terms of the overall most important determinant of the returns in your portfolio." - Jeff Spiegel [25:41] - "The most thoughtful way to incorporate megatrends into a portfolio is to actually just start a portfolio or pick the megatrends in a way that keeps your intended asset allocation in line. Don't take unintended bets in technology, on size, in sector or geography just by adding those megatrends securities in." - Jeff Spiegel Links Jeff Spiegel on LinkedIn iShares Morningstar BlackRock I'm Not Like Everybody Else by The Kinks New York, New York by Frank Sinatra Invest in Innovation with Thematic ETFs iShares Exponential Technologies ETF IHAK | iShares Cybersecurity and Tech ETF ICLN |iShares Global Clean Energy ETF XT | iShares Exponential Technologies ETF The Signal and the Noise by Nate Silver Slimed! How can we solve the biggest problems facing humanity and the planet by leveraging the power of businesses to create positive change? My guest this week has dedicated his time, skills and resources to address this question in the most impactful way possible. Anders H. Lier is an international impact investor and a leader in the field of innovation and technology. He has been pioneering early stage impact investing, he is Co-founder of Katapult Group and he is an active angel investor. We talk about how he has experienced a number of pivotal moments (Coconut moments, as I call them) through his life and career, and how these moments have lead him down new paths. One result being his long involvement with girls' education in India. We also discuss the power of exponential thinking and how this brings hope to solving some of our biggest problems, especially related to the climate crisis. This conversation left me with a great deal of hope and a huge boost of inspiration and I hope you will have the same experience! More VolatilityMarket volatility stayed elevated last week as interest rates made a move higher, a government shutdown loomed, and a major infrastructure deal hangs in the balance. Yet, the market is still less than 5% down from its all-time highs. Since we spent 220 plus days straight less than 5% from the highs, (S&P 500) it is natural that the first bout of volatility catches some of us off guard and causes us to make irrational decisions. Let's make sure that if this much volatility gets us feeling nervous, we gut-check our portfolios.Investing in MegatrendsMy guest today is Luke Hallard. He is the founder of Telescope Investing and the host of the Telescope Investing Podcast. He has a clear framework for investing in megatrends - trends that are shaping our future. Last season, we heard from the participants of “America In One Room,” a landmark deliberative experiment that brought together more than 500 registered U.S. voters to discuss the most talked about societal issues affecting us today. The age range of participants ran the gamut, and we heard many interesting perspectives from our podcast guests. For the second season of this podcast, we decided to focus on the 18–29 age cohort. Our "Shaping Our Future" event" was tailored to those who have never (or not) enrolled in post secondary education, currently enrolled students, and recent graduates. In this completely virtual event, we brought together more than 600 participants from all across the country. Over the course of two days, we discussed the electoral college, national service, and economic inequality.Like last season, a new episode will be published each week. Elissa Brunato is a designer and researcher who explores the intersection between human demands and wider ecological systems. This exploration has led Elissa to tackle the huge environmental footprint caused by the production of modern-day sequins. Industrial sequins are made from petroleum-based plastic or synthetic resins and due to their miniature size exacerbate the micro-plastic issues our planet currently faces. So in 2019, Elissa worked alongside material scientists to create naturally shimmering sequins that are made from a structural component found in plant cell walls called cellulose. The sequins are compostable, lightweight, strong and offer a glimpse into the solutions sustainable materials provide and the possibilities that lay on the horizon at the intersection between design and science. Elissa's projects also include exploring industrial flat glass production and the issues that stem from its widespread manufacturing to create the buildings that dominate urban landscapes across the world today. Elissa's work has been exhibited around the world, won a range of acclaimed awards and been featured in publications like Dezeen, Creative Review and Fast Company. If you'd like to see some of Elissa's work, here are a couple links to the projects we spoke about in this episode: Bio Iridescent Sequins Float And if you're interested learning more about Green Canvas, you can find us on our website. We as ATs have a very important duty. If we want the future of our profession to be even better than we have it currently, we must provide effective and impactful mentorship for the athletic trainers of the future. How do we shape our future, right now? Author and architect Keller Easterling discusses the role architects should take to shape a better world, and the invisible systems used by corporate power to exert control over populations. Also in this episode, we speak to scientist Helen Caldicott about facing the nuclear threat. All that, and a few words from Laura on police and women in crisis: the real vs the "seemingly violent".
