February 20, 2024 ~ The romance of train travel has become so cinematic that for decades now, movies have tried to capture its allure. What many may not know however, is that magic can readily be seen and experienced aboard the rails in real life, and its enchantment factor only depends on what train you ride and what route you choose. Serving as our conductor today is one who is well-versed in the beauty of riding the rails, Rocky Mountaineer Train Manager Chris Woods.
This week on the Get More Smarter Podcast, Republicans have managed to break both chambers of Congress as they refuse to not only accomplish their most basic constitutional obligations, but fail to accomplish even their real bad political objectives. Then, Gabe-ish Evans -- the half-term state representative running for the GOP nomination to lose to Congresswoman Yadira Caraveo in November -- gets Speaker Mike Johnson's endorsement; no word on whether or not he also got Denver Mayor Mike Johnston's endorsement, but we're betting against it personally. Next, we come closer to home with some good old fashioned chaos at the State Capitol, and the disgraced convicted felon who wrote the worst law in Colorado may be running for Congress now that a criminal record is apparently something to be proud of when running for the nomination of the party of law and order. BUT FIRST semi-returning podcast champion Andrew Baumann, Partner at the legendary Democratic Polling Firm Global Strategy Group joins us to review the latest edition of the ProgressNow/GSG quarterly-ish survey, "The Rocky Mountaineer"...

Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - The Klahoose Wilderness Resort has partnered with the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) to support the newly launched Indigenous Tourism Destination Fund. “There's 800 new Indigenous tourism businesses that this strategy is going to support. Those are new ones. I think there's 300 now that are like Klahoose Wilderness Resort across the country. Most of them are small businesses like ours,” explained Chris Tait, Tourism manager for the Klahoose Wilderness Resort. “We're part of the original accreditation program with the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada, where they recognize Indigenous tourism businesses. There's three levels. You have to meet a whole bunch of criteria, like: have a business plan; a marketing plan; work with international visitors; be an Indigenous owned business; and have an Indigenous experience.” “The other businesses in the program are much larger non-Indigenous businesses. WestJet, Rocky Mountaineer, Airbnb are three big examples. They're going to contribute quite a bit of money.” “Klahoose Wilderness Resort is going to contribute a small amount. We're a very little Indigenous resort, we only have seven rooms and cabins, but for us, supporting the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada is really important. The whole purpose of that fund is Indigenous reconciliation and making sure that it's Indigenous first as a business.” The immediate goal is to raise $2.6 billion for Indigenous tourism over the next seven years. They hope to build it into a $6 billion a year industry by 2030. Chris Tait: “That fund will go back to help those original tourism businesses, which are some of the best businesses across Canada. It'll help support them in their marketing and their training, but it'll also help support bringing up a lot of those newer businesses, or just businesses that aren't 100 percent market ready. Maybe they need more training, whether it's Indigenous specific training or tourism and hospitality training. Those are just examples, but it would help support business development. “It's an ‘opt in', customers can choose to do it or not and it's only $10. So it's not a big fee.” “The Klahoose Wilderness Resort will collect the funds from our guests and then it will go towards this larger pot.”
One show… two episide entries.Gary K4AAQ did a long ‘Promo' for HRN 495 ConFuzin' After All These Years that was really a slide show of the vacation he just took to Utah and a Rocky Mountaineer train ride. Our web host, Squarespace, only lets us put one audio file in an episode, and we want to publish this one separately, so… two Episode entries for one… OK, we did say it was Confuzin'. All the way around.
If there is a short list of thought leaders in the DMO world, Rick Antonson is always on that list. He was our first guest 20 years ago on the DMOU Teleseminar and our first guest on the the resurrected DMOU Podcast (and that says a lot). On this episode, he's back to talk Destination Marketing…but also to share thoughts about his latest book, Train Beyond the Mountains: Journeys on the Rocky Mountaineer. Rick and I go deep into the meaning behind travel, the connections made and the life lessons learned. It's a wide-ranging conversation that I believe you'll love with one of the most eloquently expressive voices of our era.

Today's is served on both podcast and Youtube though. A trip on the #1 retirement bucket list holiday through Canada, Alaska and the USA with Suzanne KeirSuzanne and her husband David, both in their pre-retirement, squirrelled together all their annual and long service leave and took an epic pre-retirement sabbatical to the number #1 destination on the epic retirement bucket list - Canada and Alaska, before continuing on into America. They chose to do the trip as a 7 week sabbatical from their jobs, and they enjoyed it so much Suzanne returned and put in notice to her employer that she wanted to retire. So today we're talking travel, hearing about this truly epic journey, and all the highlights and experiences Suzanne and David had along the way. This will give you FOMO! We also chat with Suzanne at the end about her imminent retirement and what she hopes lies ahead. You can watch it on Youtube below!HIGHLIGHTS: 2.45 The big holiday overview. Join us as Suzanne talks us through how they did it, where they went and some of the experiences they had along the way. They picked off all the bucket list items, from Gold Class on the Rocky Mountaineer, to a lake-view room at the Fairmont Hotel on Lake Louise, seeing the Hubbard Glacier, Cruising the Inside Passage of Alaska co-incidentally with a Santa-Claus Convention on board. Then, they hired a car and toured some of the most magical parts of country California, through Yosemite, to a magical town called Groveland, overlooking El-Capitan, down to San Franciso; before flying to Chicago and staying in a haunted hotel. In Chicago they did a food and wine tour, ate lots of Italian. Then, from Chicago it was up to Niagara where they stayed in The Embassy Suites which overlooked the falls from their bedroom, and at night they change colour with a light show. David even did the zipline over the falls. Next it was off to Salem, doing the tour of the history of the witches and on to Boston for three days, touring the city for a few days. After that they spent five nights in New York, where they hired ebikes and rode all along the Hudson, to Battery Park, the Brooklyn Bridge. Then, onto Washington for two days of adventures. Their last stop was Jackson Hole, a beautiful country town, where they spent several days, did two little tours, saw bears in the wild and saw the sights. One of my favourite tips is her recommendation that in every capital city, make the effort to book a guided tour. She explains the benefits of doing this so clearly! 19.00, Suzanne admits she's come back from the holiday and announced her plans to retire at the end of the year. And she talks about making this decision. She's taking golf lessons, and a few of her friends are all retiring at the same time. She has lots of playmates. 21.20 Our fast five with Suzanne Keir Some fun answers and here she talks about her retirement ambitions of driving a caravan around Australia and staying in it for three months at a time at the beaches. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit www.epicretirement.net

We took the Rocky Mountaineer train route from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Banff, Alberta. Here's our honest review.
This week we're continuing our tour of Western Canada with Martin Bean, CEO of Roam Transit in Banff, AB. Roam Transit, like many transit agencies in tourist destinations, has a dual role. One is to get the residents of the Bow Valley from Canmore to Banff (who all ride for free by the way) where they need to go, the other is helping the over four million visitors who come to Banff National Park and Lake Louise each year explore the region (and leave their cars behind). Beyond transit passes for hotel guests or people arriving by tour bus, Roam Transit is pretty special in a lot of other ways--and all focused on preserving the natural beauty around them. Roam Transit wraps their buses with pictures of the local wildlife taken by local nature photographers. From deer to elk to bears to martins (a kind of weasel) Roam Transit gives you a taste of what animals are roaming around--some of which you could even run into while in downtown Banff. Because they are in the middle of one of the most beautiful places in the world, environmental stewardship is a big part of how they do things. Their operations facility doesn't have a furnace, but runs off waste wood burned as part of a community heating system. They have over 680 solar panels on the roof that generate enough power to charge up three battery electric buses plus the whole building. There's getting power from a sustainable grid and then there's getting your power from your own solar power grid. Tune in to hear all about these topics plus how Roam Transit works with Parks Canada, trains new drivers, and helps the community leave cars behind to help the environment and congestion. Also on the show: Mike's Minute with Mike Bismeyer, and his special connection to Roam Transit Transit Unplugged TV videographer and director Jaime Cuadra talks about filming the special episode coming up in June on the Rocky Mountaineer excursion train. Check out the Transit Unplugged TV episode from Vancouver, the first stop on Paul's look at transportation in Western Canada. Next week we have Seleta Reynolds, Chief Innovation Officer and Interim Chief People Officer at LA Metro, talking about getting ready for the 2028 Summer Olympics. Travel writer and historian Rick Antonson has traveled on trains through twenty-eight American states, across nine Canadian provinces, and in more than thirty-five countries. He is co-author of a book of railway stories, Whistle Posts West: Railway Tales From British Columbia, Alberta, and Yukon. He and his two sons, Brent and Sean, circumnavigated the Northern Hemisphere by train over the course of five trips, traveling through countries as varied as Belarus, Mongolia, and North Korea. Rick and his wife, Janice, became engaged on a train in Alabama en route to New Orleans. Rick is the former president and CEO of Tourism Vancouver (now Destination Vancouver). He served as chair of the board for Destinations International, based in Bangkok, Thailand. He was vice president of Rocky Mountaineer during its start-up years in the early 1990s. Train Beyond the Mountains is his fifth travel narrative. On this episode of Destination on the Left, Rick Antonson shares why he wrote his latest book, Train Beyond the Mountains, and the fresh perspective traveling with his 10-year-old grandson gave him. We also talk about intergenerational or legacy travel and why this market segment may be an overlooked opportunity for destination marketing organizations. What You Will Learn in this Episode: Rick shares more about why he wrote his latest book, Train Beyond the Mountains, and why it's his personal favorite What cathedral thinking is, and what it means in the context of the travel industry What we can learn from taking a moment to travel with family and learn from its younger members Why having a travel companion so different from himself brought out stories Rick never would have found alone How to market opportunities for multigenerational and legacy travel A Fresh Perspective Rick Antonson shares the story behind his new book, Train Beyond the Mountains, which documents his two-week trip with his grandson in the Canadian Rockies. The pair traveled on the Rocky Mountaineer train, and Rick shares why being on the train with his grandson sparked a lot of reflection. He realized that traveling with a child allows you to see the world through a different lens. The Joy of Travel Rick talks about the importance of travel writing in motivating and inspiring people to actually go and visit destinations. He shares some experiences from his travels, including a touching moment with his grandson on a train journey and a missed opportunity to learn the story of a fellow traveler. He reflects on the Buddhist idea that we often assume we have more time than we do, and how COVID-19 has taught us never to take travel for granted. As a destination marketer, he encourages inviting people to experience new places and meet people who are different from themselves. Legacy Travel On the show, Rick also talks about the market opportunity of legacy travel. As each generation ages, there is a ticking legacy clock in the back of their mind, and leaving memories behind for their family becomes important. We dive into how destinations can better identify and market to legacy travelers, accommodate their needs, and ensure that activities are enjoyable and informative for all ages. Amy emphasizes that what drew them to their partners is their shared values of high standards and integrity, which makes for great collaborations. Ryan Sanders – Vice President of Operations and Sales for the Motorcoach Family of Brands In the travel industry, attending events and trade shows is crucial for networking and staying up-to-date with industry changes. Ryan shares his experience of attending appointments and events at the ABA conference, where he was impressed with the resilience of the industry organizations, including ABA. Despite the challenges brought on by the pandemic, these organizations have managed to survive and support their members, ensuring that industry professionals can continue to connect and collaborate — which is why his word of the conference is “evolving.” Chelsea Lerud – Executive Director of Iowa Travel Industry Partners Chelsea shares that in terms of group travel, they're seeing some exciting changes in the market. Specifically, in Iowa, they are noticing that travelers are using the state as a stopover on their way to their final destination. While Iowa may not be their ultimate goal, the team at Iowa Travel Industry Partners is excited to capture visitors at a few key locations. A strategy that encourages travelers to take a longer trip and explore more of what Iowa has to offer. She goes on to comment that “It's exciting to see the evolution of group travel, and we're thrilled to be a part of it.” Dagny Ashley – Director of Tourism at City of Quincy Dagny, of Tourism at City of Quincy, is excited for 2023 and getting back to the business of travel. After a tough few years for both the hospitality industry and suppliers, her organization is looking forward to a positive outlook for the year ahead. With last year already showing signs of recovery, Dagny is confident that visitors are eager to hit the road again and start traveling. This sentiment has been echoed by others at the ABA event, with a shared sense of excitement for the year ahead and a feeling of returning to a new normal in the travel industry. Gary Hahn – Vice President of Marketing and Communications National Comedy Center Gary discusses how group travel is evolving and changing — according to Gary, they are seeing a broader demographic of visitors, including young people and students. They are also noticing more individuals from the over-50 crowd, which tends to be the motorcoach crowd that enjoys visiting museums. Gary is excited to see this change, as it presents new opportunities for engagement, especially given the technology present in their museum. Gary shares details of an upcoming collaboration hosting of the Pennsylvania Bus Association's annual conference in Chautauqua County. This is an exciting opportunity for the attraction, as it's their first time bringing in the association for a conference. Inna Cramer – Sales Director at Rocky Mountaineer Inna, Director of Sales for Rocky Mountaineer, shared her insights on the evolving group travel industry in an interview. She mentioned that they are seeing smaller groups of families and friends wanting to travel together, as well as like-minded individuals wanting to connect and enjoy the train experience. When asked to describe ABA Marketplace in one word, Inna went for “connections.” She loves the word because it represents the opportunity to see old friends, establish new connections, and work together with industry partners to make an impact in the travel and tourism industry. This week we bring you something a little different. Usually, when we talk about rail we're talking about commuters or inter-city rail, but in this episode, we're talking about rail tourism. Dave McKenna, CEO of the Rocky Mountaineer talks with Paul about delivering an unparalleled rail experience traveling through some of the most amazing scenery in North America. With routes in British Columbia, Alberta, and now Colorado-Utah, the Rocky Mountaineer, traveling at "the speed of Kodak" lets people unwind watching scenery go by combined with world-class food and accommodations. Dave and Paul talk about the logistics of offering rail excursions, going above and beyond with hospitality, and how he doesn't settle for "good enough" in keeping the Rocky Mountaineer safe. This focus on the customer, sometimes offering things before a passenger even knows they need it, could be an example for commuter rail in North America bringing a customer-centric approach to commuting. Next week we have an especially amazing episode to close out the year. Join Paul in conversation with: Mohamed Mezghani, Secretary General, UITP Jeremy Yap, Deputy Chief Executive, LTA, Vice President, UITP Executive Board Julie Timm, CEO, Sound Transit Rod Jones, Portfolio Leader, Head of Americas, Modaxo This special hour-long episode is not to be missed! This look back at 2022 and ahead 2023 with some of transportation's most important thought leaders will inspire you as we head into 2023. From everyone at Transit Unplugged and Modaxo, we wish all of our listeners Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year. We're winding down the year with another trip across the pond to London. Paul talks with Mike Bagshaw, COO MTR UK, about running the Elizabeth Line (and completing all the remaining connections), the technology needed to run it on time, and how MTR uses property development to fund transit operations in cities like Hong Kong. Mike talks about how MTR UK used digital twin tech to test, refine, and configure the Elizabeth Line schedules to be reliable even when things don't always go to plan. Also this week:

So we move to 10pm Eastern/7pm Pacific… do one show… then do a bunch of ‘No Show/Not a Show' shows off schedule for one reason or another. Tonight we finally get back on schedule, and David and Jim aren't available. Jim is still galivanting around the US, and David is sleeping after a big public service event kept him up all weekend. So filling in, we roped in Jason Johnston KC5HWB from Ham Radio 2.0, and our ‘Midwest Correspondent' Kyle Kreig AA0Z, on his phone from Spokane, WA where he was attending a DX conference. I'll call it a ‘general conversation'. We got started extra early because Jason had limited time, and he ended up staying for almost 90 minutes anyway! After Jason and Kyle excused themselves, I played some video showing my extensive ham operating on our recent trip to Canada for our Rocky Mountaineer adventure. I'm kidding - I barely got on the air at all. But I did some.If you want to see video of the vacation in general, I'm posting what I call ‘raw video' (really slightly edited) of each day's activity on my ‘vacation video' YouTube channel: https://YouTube.com/GaryPearce. You'll find a Rocky Mountaineer playlist, along with playlists of other, similar ‘barely edited' videos from other trips.

Today's trains are not only a part of the green "slow travel" movement, they can be ultra-fast and super deluxe. Lea and Guest Yi Ding, a Eurail executive, share train tips and trips, from speedy, efficient Eurail to the luxury private train tours of the world. Riding the rails proves it's the journey, not just the destination. We first discuss all about Eurail, which connects Europe through trains and ferries. We offer tips, scheduling, scenic routes, night trains and ferry passes.Lea then describes 14 private trains focused on luxury, with reclaimed vintage carriage cars, fine dining and luxury bedding only a part of the ride: the Venice-Simplon Orient Express, the Royal Canadian Pacific, the Palace on Wheels, The Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express, the Belmond Hiram Bingham, Inca Rail, Belmond Andean Explorer, Belmond Royal Scotsman, the Transcantabrico Classico, The Pride of Africa Rovos Rail, The Palace on Wheels, the Belmond Eastern & Oriental Express, The Belmond English panel, The Ghan and The Rocky Mountaineer. And of course, we end with a special memory of a train ride. _____Yi Ding was born in Beijing, and considers herself a citizen of the world having traveled in close to 50 countries and being based in Europe for ten years. She currently lives in the Netherlands, Eurail's headquarters. She has focused on building the awareness of Eurail and its rail passes._____Podcast host Lea Lane blogs at forbes.com, has traveled to over 100 countries, written nine books, including Places I Remember, and contributed to many guidebooks. This week on the Get More Smarter Podcast, the GOP is freaking out about a tactic they've used and we've used and everyone has used before, mostly because they do not want to talk about their terrible ideas that no one agrees with. We pre-preview the newest edition of the Rocky Mountaineer, and it's exactly what we thought it would be; Colorado plays an oversize role in all American politics, and that is unfortunately the case with the deadly insurrection at the Capitol on January 6; Lauren Boebert is a wreck, and this time we're talking about an ATV; Jason and I LARP an interview with Tina Peters and can't make it make any more sense; and Ken Buck apparently clears the weeds from his lawn with Javelin missiles.

This week on the Get More Smarter Podcast, we made it into triple digits! Meanwhile, gas prices are up, so are profits for Big Oil. Could these things possibly be related? We ask Oak Creek Colorado bar owner, AAA Colorado Spokesperson, and enormous Deadhead Skyler McKinley what's driving the increase in gas prices, and it ain't Joe Biden. The Colorado Governor's race gets sillier as presumptive nominee Heidi Ganahl currently trails one of her primary contenders who believes among other things that we should let wolves murder people for being homeless, we review some new polling courtesy of ProgressNow Colorado and Global Strategy Group's Rocky Mountaineer with returning guest Andrew Baumann, and we revisit the doomed recall of Governor Polis and last episode's guest Secretary of State Jena Griswold.

This week on the Get More Smarter Podcast, The Rocky Mountaineer is back! We dig into the latest poll from Global Strategy Group and ProgressNow Colorado to see how much Democrats in the legislature overreached this session, and how much the voters really really liked it. The failed attempt by right-wing goons to overturn the results of the 2020 election in a violent insurrection turns six-months old this week and we discuss the Russian dolls of alternative reality Republicans have put themselves in since then. We have some preliminary redistricting and reapportionment maps, and we discuss why where the lines are right now almost certainly will not matter to the seats actually being campaigned in in 2022. And we read you the internet like we're your parents and talk about some horrible things Lauren Boebert said! But first, we interview Andrew Baumann, an at-best-mediocre poker player and the senior vice president at Global Strategy Group, and more importantly the lead pollster on this issue of the Rocky Mountaineer.
