Before that, Jess and Jacob delve into the circumstances surrounding Forward Coach Luke Stratford's 7 week matchday suspension and the impact that will have on the team in this period, before a look at the furore surrounding the gendered language of World Rugby's tweet in the documentary on officiating in the last World Cup. Then, courtesy of Jess' LinkedIn totally-not-stalking and Jacob's goldmine-discovery of an archived post on the University of Ottawa's website, we have a mega player profile on recent signing Claire Gallagher where we get equally giddy about her potential, equally befuddled about Canadian collegiate awards as well as do an insight into the state of women's rugby in Canada. Rounding off Episode 10, we explore the possibilities awaiting Tigers facing the daunting challenge of Gloucester-Hartpury, and where the gyals can look to improve on their showing from the heavy defeat away fixture in the end of November and continue to build from their first victory in the PWR against Sale.

This week, I chatted with Claire Gallagher about the unique challenges creatives face as they try to work on their branding.  The rest of the world thinks designers have it easy when it comes to developing their marketing, but that isn't true.  Claire explains they often have it harder as they get lost in the weeds of the design. About Claire She is a designer and a digital strategist. She's focused on helping solo service-based businesses like coaches and creatives show up online and scale their business

Claire Gallagher, Designer and Solopreneur Strategist, comes to Hacker Valley to break down branding, visibility, and choosing solopreneurship over business ownership. Combining the terms solo and entrepreneur, solopreneurs are a different breed of business owner, and Claire has made it her mission to help them not make the same business mistakes she once made. Claire walks through the essentials of how her business caters to individuals looking to go it alone and how to make an impact while staying small.  Timecoded Guide: [00:00] Introducing the concept of solopreneurship [04:32] Shifting to business strategy to better serve a client base [09:19] Deciding alone as a solo entrepreneur [16:40] Pricing your work and validating your professional value [24:46] Making peace with looking silly as a business owner   Sponsor Links: Thank you to our sponsors Axonius and Uptycs for bringing this episode to life! Claire has dabbled in building teams and working in larger businesses in the past, but her calling has always brought her back to a company of one. For solopreneurs, Claire explains, it's not that they cannot afford hiring employees or scaling their business. Instead, a solopreneur's focus is on the balance between work and life, along with the power and experience to make their own decisions about their business.  “I'm a loud introvert. I could talk all day, but essentially, I'm kind of introverted in secret. Generally, I like to work alone, to get into a creative flow, to not have anybody to answer to. This company of one, this solopreneurship, it suits my energy and my temperament.”   What are some of the pros and cons of going it alone as a solopreneur and keeping your business small?  There are pros and cons in business, no matter the size. Claire's strongest pro for becoming a solo entrepreneur has been her ability to pivot without impacting anyone but herself. Pivoting towards strategy was a hard decision, but it was so much easier to make on her own. Unfortunately, making decisions on one's own can also be a con of solopreneurship. Claire has seen clients have a lack of accountability in sticking with their decisions when they don't have anyone working with them. “That's a pro, I was able to pivot without having to hire people, sack people, and really invest heavily in changing everything. That's a real plus, I could just pivot like that and it was a decision that I made, and I was responsible for it.”    At what point would you recommend a solopreneur, or content creator, to reach out to someone like you so they could shine in this digital world? Although solo entrepreneurs thrive in business on their own, it's important to never go it alone. Claire advises that early stage solopreneurs consider the community around them and build their business with a healthy curiosity in books, online resources, and virtual communities of fellow entrepreneurs. As they progress through their business, Claire also recommends connecting with a coach or strategist, like herself, to go further faster and avoid careless mistakes. “Solopreneurs think, ‘I'm smart, I can figure this out.' Yes, you can, but to go further faster, I think you need to work with a mentor or a coach or strategist. You're always going to get further faster by finding somebody who understands what you're trying to achieve.”   What are some of the tenants that you teach people about coming across as authentically as possible? Branding is a vital element of content creation and business ownership. However, the current world craves branding that comes across as authentic. Claire explains that authenticity comes from a willingness to make mistakes and put yourself out there, even if it feels or looks silly the first time. If a solopreneur is honestly trying to deliver value, that will show through any first-time awkwardness or silliness and still feel authentic to potential clients. “Starting before you feel ready is really the only way that you can start because you can't know everything until you've tried some stuff. Showing up and making mistakes and maybe seeming a little bit foolish at the start, take it. That's what's gonna happen.” --------------- Links: Keep up with Claire Gallagher on LinkedIn and at ClaireCreative.com Connect with Ron Eddings on LinkedIn and Twitter Connect with Chris Cochran on LinkedIn and Twitter Purchase a HVS t-shirt at our shop Continue the conversation by joining our Discord Check out Hacker Valley Media and Hacker Valley Studio

Claire is a digital strategy coach for solo-preneuers. She helps people market and sell their services online by connecting with their strengths and core values.   She joins Pete today to talk about what she does for her clients, how she learnt everything she knows, her passions as well as her thoughts of the negativity online and its impact on digital strategy.      KEY TAKEAWAYS    One of the cornerstones if what Claire does, is guide her clients into using empathy to gain an understanding of their customers perspective. She helps them translate their expertise into a language their audience will understand. Claire likes to get into the heads of other people to see the world from their perspective and their point of view. The delivery of an idea is just that, what matters the most is getting the concept right in the first place. To ensure that the message you are giving and sending out to your clients is right. Concept and meaning has always been Claire's area of joy, right back to when she first started studying graphic design. You need to feel ownership of your business or brand, this is where Claire's guidance comes in. To help you learn what will be effective for you and your brand/business. It's not always necessary to be doing anything and everything. It can be much more effective to focus on fewer core activities, focusing on where your audience is. Bullies and unkind people have always existed but the internet has given many people an anonymous platform where they can do more damage and cause a lot of disruption. If you have an opinion about something as well as the confidence to be bold, this can be a way to gain more of a following on social media. There is no one else in the world like you apart from you. Spend time connecting with what you are trying to say and what is unique about you and use this in your social media strategy.     BEST MOMENTS   “Digital strategy is making the best use of your resources to achieve a specific goal”   “You need to always be stepping into your clients' shoes”   “Trolls are someone opposing the person and what they are standing up and saying”   “It's about connecting with the person you're trying to reach that you know you can help, that needs to hear this and serving them”   “The best person you can help is the person you were 3 or 4 years ago”   ABOUT THE HOST    The ‘Mighty Pete Lonton' from the ‘Mighty 247' company is your main host of ‘Fire in The Belly'.  Pete is an entrepreneur, mentor, coach, property Investor, and father of three beautiful girls. Pete's background is in project management and property, but his true passion is the ‘Fire in The Belly' project itself. His mission is to help others find their potential and become the mightiest version of themselves. Pete openly talks about losing both of his parents, suffering periods of depression, business downturn and burn-out, and ultimately his years spent not stoking ‘Fire in the Belly'. What If You Never Want To Have Employees The majority of people that I would work with got into the business because they love what they do. Maybe they come from the corporate world or they come from agency work or they come from some kind of bigger structure and they were always kind of frustrated with how things were done. Are You Doing What You Love Or Are You Just Doing Admin For Yourself? Creative and passionate people are led by something. But in the process of being your own boss you realize how little of it is actually delivering that service. Your time gets sucked up by all the marketing, admin and all of the things that go along with having a business. They get taken away from the service that they actually wanted to do in the first place. Defining Your Ideal Client A typical project is helping people to define their ideal client. The temptation is to either say everybody could benefit from my service or my ideal client is somebody just like me. You're not going to hire yourself so your ideal client is not you and it's not just everyone. You might be somebody who is brilliant at providing a certain service but you don't necessarily know all of these marketing/branding strategy things. It can be confusing when you step into the online world as a business owner. It's so noisy there's so many people trying to sell you courses, programs, coaching and branding and websites and ads but if you don't start with strategy you're going to end up throwing money into a vacuum. I talk about strategy as a way of getting leads and clients but strategy is really creating a meaningful business that's sustainable for you and actually suits how you want to spend your time. You have to ask how you want to spend your day?. What kind of income that you want to get? How does that income come to you? Take a look at what content you are putting out there and work out what is the most sustainable way of showing to get leads and clients online. How does having a POPS team facilitate specialist education at the institution? What other opportunities are there for patients and staff as a result of innovations such as this? Also - what are the drugs that anaesthetists commonly prescribe to patients which people who work on this side of the service aren't so keen on? What are the advantages of being able to safely discharge frail patients who may instead have ended up back in the hospital system? How do we get undergraduates to learn the skills which simple demographics show are going to become more and more crucial as the trend towards a longer life span continues in the Western world? The Guy's and St Thomas's POPS team offer a fellowship, the final part of this Sunday Special covers both that and the wider issue of getting students and younger practitioners into this growing area of health care. I am back this week with a fun, interesting and different interview. I had the opportunity to talk with Claire Gallagher – the Body Astrologer. If you haven't heard of Claire, I'm surprised, but you will be in for a treat. As many of you who have followed along – you know I have a penchant for all things mystical, magical and cosmos related – I'm a latina woman who comes from healer ancestors and I am still working to find my own healing path. I am a firm believer in energy work and I think Astrology is an incredibly under rated and under utilized tool and so does Claire! So, it was such a fun opportunity to learn about how she uses it in her business and get a better insight about how she applies it to her daily life. On top of all of that I am inspired by women entrepreneurs who are doing things on their own terms and not letting societal norms get in the way of their success.
