Join me as I sit down with the multi-talented Angela Boenisch of Highview Pastures, and we explore her fascinating transition from urban life to the heart of agriculture. Listen in as Angela shares her rich farming narrative, from her roots in dairy and hog farming to her current diverse homestead bustling with meat goats, cattle, rabbits, and layers. We cover everything from the joys and challenges of scaling up her farming operations to the integration of livestock with vegetable CSA, and even delve into how Angela's son's passion for rabbits sparked a new business venture. In our engaging conversation, Angela and I also tackle the nuanced world of cattle breeding, highlighting the significance of temperament in farm management. Angela recounts her experiences with different breeds, such as the switch from Holstein-Angus crosses to more manageable lowlines, and the decision to move away from larger, aggressive breeds for the safety and ease of handling. Moreover, we discuss the importance of sustainable farming techniques, like summer slump bale grazing, and how Angela uses social media innovatively to market her farm products.Wrapping up our talk, Angela and I exchange insights on the resources that have shaped our farming philosophies, such as Gabe Brown's "Dirt to Soil," and the crucial role of learning from a variety of agricultural practices. Angela's candid sharing of the hurdles she faced, like domain name squatting for Highview Pastures, is a testament to the unpredictable yet rewarding nature of farming. Arin Whitemountain and Tom Masterson are partnering together in Southeast Missouri to bring a niche haying service to very small acreages. Arin has invested in the necessary equipment to bale very small, round bales on small acreages with low horsepower tractors. He did it for himself last summer, and has developed a passion for these small and easy to use bales. Arin recently retired from the Coast Guard and moved to a piece of property he had previously purchased in the area. Tom has become an agricultural mentor to Arin and has been helping to get him started in the world of farming. At the same time, Tom knows many people with small acreages in the area and helps them as well. This has made for a great partnership in growing this service, and they are both very excited about the production of small round bales and how it will help those folks with very small acreages to produce something off of their grass rather than just brush hogging it down.

In this episode we talk about full season and perennial cover crops. These are great options in not only prevent plant situations, but also trying to manage the health of saline soils. As we've done on several episodes of this season of Field Check, we will also highlight the agronomic, logistical, and safety considerations when growing these types of cover crops. Assistant professor and soil health extension specialist Dr. Abbey Wick, said she has been expecting a lot of prevented planting acres this year. “I think farmers are working as hard as they can as quickly as they can to get crops in the field, but some of those areas, or some of those fields are just gonna be ones that they're not gonna get to. And so in that case, we really wanna encourage a full season cover crop to manage that field just like you would with a cash crop.” - Dr. Abbey Wick Abbey recommends looking at the NDSU Soil Health Cover Crop Booklet and the Grazing Cover Crop Booklet for more insight and information into this process. Dr. Kevin Sedivec, who as many of you know is a professor of range science at NDSU, says to prioritize soil health first when selecting full season cover crops. He also recommends considering whether you'll be leaving it idle, grazing it or haying it. “We should always think of soil health first. If I can create a food base to enhance the soils, I can then tweak that to make it good for livestock.” - Dr. Kevin Sedivec Kevin highlights that if bailing is selected you need to understand that you are removing carbon from your ecosystem. He says there is a balance to be considered and achieved with regard to how much carbon you are adding with manure from livestock and how much you are removing with bailing. If you do decide to bail your cover crops, there are some really important safety considerations to also keep in mind. NDSU extension farm and ranch safety coordinator. Angie Johnson says it's especially important to remember safe practices when operating baling equipment. “There are so many moving parts, whether you've got a belt baler, a chain baler, or a roller baler. With all of those rotating parts, you have extra areas where we call pinch points or rat points, so areas where you can get your fingers or limbs in some pretty serious danger. And so focus on reading that operator's manual on how you perform maintenance.” - Angie Johnson Follow the link www.NDFieldCheck.com to participate in our next question and answer segment to share your questions and get them answered by the experts! Due to last year’s extreme drought across many areas, straw was at a premium which may have tipped the scales in favour of baling for some producers. This year, much of the Prairies are in a different situation and farmers may be hurting themselves in the long run if they choose to bale off straw... Read More

Each year, two Ospreys known as Charlie and Charlotte nest near the Owl Research Institute in Montana. A webcam of their nest gives people an intimate glimpse into their lives. In 2021, Charlie brought some baling twine into their nest. Baling twine is a plastic string used to bind hay and straw. When brought into a nest, chicks can get fatally tangled — including as many as 10% of Osprey chicks. Fortunately, there are organizations working to protect Osprey chicks from baling twine. Brandon Jakobi is a National Proficiency Finalist this year for his custom round bale business in Wisconsin. He had several things come together at once that were the catalyst for him to achieve at this very high level. Brandon joined the FFA in the 7th Grade. It was something that he always knew that he wanted to do, and he made it happen at his first opportunity. Brandon's father had been in the FFA and was part of the FFA Alumni Chapter in their area, so he knew the ropes. Knowing that Brandon would need a good SAE, he suggested that Brandon purchase his round baler and start his own business baling hay and cornstalks, etc. for people in their community. Brandon's dad also knew that Brandon had been inspired by another student from their area who had won a National Proficiency Award. Brandon told me that the community really celebrated this accomplishment and that made him want to do the same thing. Knowing that a national proficiency award was the goal, Brandon and his father thought this business could be the perfect fit to help him achieve this. Brandon Jakobi's Round Baling was born. Since that time Brandon has continued to build his client base by using such marketing methods as hanging fliers in stores and pulling his round baler through parades. Today his business supports him financially, and when he is not baling hay he is working on his families farm or a neighboring dairy. Brandon is still living in the surreal knowing that he is this close to accomplishing his goal and realizing just how far he has come.

Mark Owen is widely regarded as one of the most successful conservation activists and wildlife field researchers ever to work in Africa. During a career that spanned more than two decades, Mark Owens and Delia, his wife, almost single-handedly saved the 33,000 square mile Central Kalahari Game Reserve/National Park. After fleeing from his 3rd assassination attempt by poachers, he developed a 750-acre private wildlife reserve in ID. He developed chronic pain for nine years after undergoing surgery for a broken back. After seeing Dr. Hanscom for a third and final opinion for major spine surgery, he broke free from his pain using simple techniques within six weeks.
