Sona Falstaff, a hospital nurse in Bombay, has things more or less where she wants them. Yes, she faces a certain discrimination, positive and negative, because of her mixed heritage, which makes her a “half-half” in the lingo of 1930s India. She lives in a poor section of the city, and she must work to support herself and her aging mother. India itself is a state of flux as the British Raj comes to an end and demands for independence increase in intensity and volume. But all in all, Sona wants nothing more than to cling to the job and the life she knows. Yet when the painter Mira Novak is admitted to the hospital, she upends Sona's carefully constructed world. Mira's vibrancy, passion, and generosity awaken a yearning to explore that Sona didn't even know she had. But just as she begins to cherish the possibility of friendship, Mira dies, six days after entering the hospital. The job Sona loves is threatened by suspicion that she somehow contributed to the painter's death. Sona soon discovers that Mira has left her a set of four paintings with instructions to deliver them to their rightful owners. Now she faces a choice: fight for her job and play it safe at home, or take a chance on finding her true self in the wider world, whatever risk that involves? The contrast between Sona and Mira, the friendship that develops between them, and the slowly revealed history that lies beneath Sona's reluctance to take chances are all beautifully laid out in this well-written novel, making Six Days in Bombay (Mira Books, 2025) a delight to read. Alka Joshi is the internationally bestselling author of the Jaipur Trilogy: The Henna Artist, The Secret Keeper of Jaipur, and The Perfumist of Paris. Six Days in Bombay is her fourth novel. C. P. Lesley is the author of two historical fiction series set during the childhood of Ivan the Terrible and four other novels. Her next book, Song of the Steadfast, is due in 2025. Hey, book club besties! This month, we read the incredible debut novel by Alka Joshi titled, The Henna Artist. Following protagonist Lakshmi - one of Jaipur's most in-demand Henna Artists - the novel tells the story of a woman running away from her past in 1950s India in order to forge her own path. But of course, there's only so far she can run before her ex-husband and a sister she didn't know existed turn up on her doorstep. So, does their arrival mark the beginning of the end for Lakshmi's new life? It's a story about freedom of choice, domestic abuse, and arranged marriage, and boy was it a riveting read. Today on the show, Mich, Zara, and Annabelle chat about the book's exploration of the female experience in India during the 1950s, standout characters, and plot twist execution. BOOKSTORM Podcast welcomes back NYT bestselling author ALKA JOSHI to discuss The Perfumist of Paris!  Once again, Alka transports us to another place  and time, infused with the complex and enticing scents of perfume in the making: lavender, geranium, violet, cedar, sage, musk, sandalwood, vetiver, incense … a mud hut … a person you love. We talk about how these scents, both the good and the bad, comprise our lives.  We dive deep into the role of women in the 1970s, particularly as they were negotiating career choices and family responsibilities. Can parents have it all? Maybe so, but it's easy to lose oneself in the process. How do we reclaim that lost part? Perhaps by pursuing a long-held dream or developing a talent? We talk about being intentional. A quote: “The measure of us isn't in the day-to-day. And it's not in our past or our future. It's in the fundamental changes we make within ourselves over a lifetime.” Wow! Have you struggled with shame over a past decision? What about something that happened that was out of your control?  Are we as a society equipping young people to dismantle negative self-talk and turn those once-shameful experiences into something inspiring? Join us for an incredible discussion!

Alka Joshi - The Henna Artist - Part IIThanks for listening to Part II of my two-part episode featuring my conversation with New York Times bestselling author Alka Joshi. In this episode, Alka continues her discussion about her path to publishing her debut novel The Henna Artist. It's a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick.Reese Witherspoon said, “Captivated me from the first chapter to the final page.” Alka talks about hiring two developmental editors for her manuscript after she had been working with her agent for several years on changing her novel. Initially she resisted the feedback, but she realized the comments were nuances and brushstrokes that could help elevate her novel to bestseller status. Now she encourages everyone to find a developmental editor, but particularly ones that are interested in the genre they're writing.Alka discusses the reasons she cut almost 150 pages from her novel, and it wasn't because of the reason I imagined. We discuss the publication of The Henna Artist and the novel's meteoric rise to bestseller although it looked like the 2020 launch might not succeed after the pandemic caused everything to shut down in March. We talk about the Netflix series in the works for The Henna Artist and book two in the trilogy The Secret Keeper of Jaipur, and we discuss the third novel that Alka will publish in 2023. Alka shares the ways readers can find her online and she encourages writers to visit her YouTube channel to see the videos she made about traditional publishing vs. self-publishing. She talks about how to get an agent and how to deal with self-doubt. She encourages every woman to write her story.Make sure to listen to Part I of the conversation with New York Times best-selling author Alka Joshi. www.alkajoshi.comwww.thehennaartist.comNow a Netflix ProjectNew York Times BestsellerReese Witherspoon Bookclub PickLA Times BestsellerUSA Today BestsellerToronto Star BestsellerGlobe & Mail BestsellerIndie Bookstores BestsellerPublishers Weekly BestsellerLonglisted: First Novel, Center for FictionAmazon Summer 2020 Readers PickGoodreads Finalist Choice Awards 2020: Best Debut Novel & Best Historical FictionIndigo 10 Best Books of 2020HCC Spring 2020 Fan Choice WinnerFollow Alka: Instagram Facebook Twitter Bookbub

This week we're talking about conviction—and why it's something writers generally start their writing journeys with, but which tends to get a bit eroded along the path to publication. This week's guest, Alka Joshi, reinvented herself after sixty with her debut novel, The Henna Artist—a book that started with plenty of conviction, and also needed passion and perseverance on Alka's part to get to the finish line. And what an extraordinary result. This fun and upbeat interview is inspiring and hopeful—and reminds us of a truth that how we write is how we live our lives, too.

Next in line for our "highlight" series is my interview with author, Alka Joshi.Alka Joshi was born in India and raised in the U.S. since the age of nine. She has a BA from Stanford University and an MFA from California College of Arts. At the age of 62, Joshi published her debut novel, The Henna Artist, which immediately became a New York Times bestseller, a Reese Witherspoon Bookclub pick, was long listed for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize and is being developed into an episodic series by Miramax TV starring Frieda Pinto. The sequel, The Secret Keeper of Jaipur, premieres June 2021, and will be followed by the third book in the trilogy in 2022. We talk about what it was like growing up in India and the transition to Iowa, how her family viewed dating and relationships, why she decided to break the glass ceiling on her own terms, and how she became an "accidental writer". She talks about the origins of The Henna Artist and how the main character, Laxmi, is an ode to her mother, her mother's own journey finding herself, why she believes women are better leaders, and how she hopes these books will be her legacy. www.alkajoshi.com

Just as with Hollywood, the fiction landscape is changing rapidly! Just this year, we had a series of books by South Asian authors hit the literary landscape and make waves throughout the world. In this episode, Shabnum sits down with Alka Joshi, author of "The Henna Artist," and Saumya Dave, author of "Well Behaved Indian Women." Both of these pieces of work came out in 2020, are works of fiction that feature almost all South Asian characters and families, and explore the role of the South Asian woman and all that is expected of her. This is true in Joshi's "The Henna Artist," a historical fiction book set in 1950s India, and Dave's "Well Behaved Indian Women," set in modern day America. It's striking how much similarity there is in what the characters face despite the different settings of each book.  Alka and Saumya both discuss the inspirations for their work as well as what is causing the widening of the publishing market that we are seeing today, allowing for more South Asian authors to tell stories from their perspective, and to talk about history from a perspective that is not just European. Host: Shabnum Gulati Guests: Alka Joshi, Saumya Dave Illustration: Hanifa Abdul HameedMusic: AnAkkiN on SoundCloud
