Orthodox Conundrum: Challenges in Jewish Orthodoxy

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 28, 2021 36:08

This episode deals with a topic that a lot of people actively avoid thinking about, but which frankly must be addressed forthrightly to avoid arguments in our families after we're gone: the allocation of property after we die. And while many of us don't want to think about this question, caring about our families requires us to do so. We can freely admit that the Torah laws of inheritance are quite different from what most parents would want for their children. In fact, a firstborn son receives a double portion, a wife does not inherit her husband, and daughters do not inherit property when there are also sons. While there are provisions in halacha to take care of the surviving wife and daughters, the simple reality is that the vast majority of people would rather not follow the laws of inheritance as set down in the Torah - and for good reason. Jewish law has provided a solution, which is a halachic supplement to the regular legal will. But how does it work? How is this not a violation of Torah law? What is the legal and philosophical justification for ignoring the Torah's directive that wives and daughters, in most cases, do not inherit property? To answer these and other questions, Scott spoke with Rabbi Menachem Copperman, the founder and manager of Kadat V'Kadin (RavCopperman@kadatvkadin.com; http://kadatvkadin.com/). Dr. Alan Copperman is director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and Vice Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Science at the Mount Sinai Health System. He's also a clinical professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai; medical director of Reproductive Medicine Associates of New York, one of the world's leading IVF centers; chief medical officer at Semaphore Genomics, a health intelligence company; and medical director at Progyny, a benefits management company.Copperman tells Harry that data first came into his practice in a major way at RMA, which needed to "learn about what the best way is to take care of patients to optimize their success rates. We fell back on that term that you use, 'MoneyBall Medicine,' because we want to have the best embryologists, the best egg-retrieving doctors, the best embryo-transferring doctors. We want to put a team on the field that optimizes the success rate for every couple who walks into our doors...I just got excited about using information to drive better decisions."Copperman notes that in his career he's moved from operating on organ systems—the uterus and the Fallopian tubes—to operating at the cellular level, biopsying individual eggs, sperm, and embryoes. "Running next-gen sequencing, we get close to a million data points on every embryo we biopsy to figure out if they're healthy or not," Copperman says. "We need mathematicians to interpret genetic code, then we have to translate it back to a human level and develop decision support tools so that doctors can talk to patients. So it starts off with patients and ends in patients, but the pathway is just so completely different than it was three years ago, no less 30 years ago."Please rate and review MoneyBall Medicine on Apple Podcasts! Building and growing an IVF practice can have numerous benefits for both the owners and the patients they serve. But growth can sometimes lead to loss of patient-focused care. On this episode, Griffin Jones, CEO of Fertility Bridge and host of Inside Reproductive Health, talks to Dr. Alan Copperman, Co-Founder and Medical Director of RMA of New York, one of the nation’s largest IVF centers. Together, they discuss how RMA of New York was able to retain their patient-focused culture while exponentially growing the practice. Their approach to delegating important tasks, understanding the “new” patient, and finding the right, compassionate employees has greatly contributed to their success today.

Anyone who has spent time in a school as an adult probably knows how hard it is for teachers to leave their work when they come home every night. There always seems to be more work for them to do, along with inordinate responsibility and a sense that every extra minute spent on tomorrow’s lesson plan will generate better outcomes for students. But teachers also bring their non-school lives along with them when they return each day. We have young teachers and old teachers; single teachers and those who are married with children; teachers who have lived their entire lives in their communities and those who have traveled the world before settling down. Each of them already brings at least one thing that is unique and worthwhile. Maybe it is their energy, optimism, or sense of purpose. Maybe it is their wealth of firsthand experience or their understanding of the community and its history. Is there something we should look for in our teachers? How can we prepare them to share the best of what they have to offer as we encourage them to grow in new ways? What can teachers learn from reflecting on how their biographies and life circumstances intersect with their work? In Teacher: Two Years in the Mississippi Delta (University Press of Mississippi, 2016), Michael Copperman recounts his experiences as a recent college graduate recruited by Teach for America to serve in a community far from his home that was burdened both by poverty and racial segregation. Perseverance & The Theory of Manhood!  With special guest:  Eric Williams In my opinion, Eric Williams story is one of perseverance and victory in spite of seemingly insurmountable odds.  Among many other things, In spite of being severely dyslexic in a world that doesn’t understand dyslexia, he became an accomplished author.  He has met the challenges of raising a severely autistic son.  As an American he was able to battle and win over the powers that be in the Country of Norway, to create and deliver one of that countries most popular tv shows ever, Alt For Norge!  No small feat. One big nugget Eric gives us in this episode is his theory of manhood…I hope you listen to it, because he nails it!  I don’t want to give it all away, but it has to do with being alone and afraid. His novel The Gift of No-Water is available on Amazon.com and this summer his new book Copperman will be out as an Audiobook. besides being an author Eric Williams is a husband and father of two, an avid fisherman, woodworker and artist. He is the co-creator of the award winning Norwegian TV show Alt For Norge. He currently lives and works in Oslo Norway. And that is how I came to know Eric Williams…because I was a contestant on that Norwegian Reality TV show and the experience totally transformed my life for the better, something I am eternally grateful for. Below is a link to Eric’s book on amazon, his email address if you want to contact him, and a youtube link to episode 1 of Alt for Norge, the Norwegian show I was on that we talk about in the episode, the concept that Eric co-created.
