Who Watches the Heroes? When superheroes cause civilian casualties while trying to save the world, who holds them responsible? This episode dives deep into the complex ethics of superhero accountability, using Marvel's Civil War (the comics) and the MCU's Captain America: Civil War (the movie) as starting points to explore broader questions about power, oversight, and responsibility. The discussion examines how superhero accountability parallels real-world debates about police, military, and government oversight. Matthew and Riki analyze different models of accountability, from internal team oversight to international bodies like the UN, questioning whether registration requirements are justified and what happens when good intentions lead to tragic outcomes. Can we trust those with extraordinary powers to regulate themselves? The hosts explore how the evolution of superhero stories mirrors changing public attitudes toward authority figures, shifting from unquestioned trust to demands for greater oversight. The conversation weighs the challenges of balancing individual liberty with public safety when dealing with people who are, in essence, "living weapons."What constitutes appropriate oversight versus excessive control? The episode examines various approaches—from complete autonomy to strict registration requirements—while considering how factors like intent, training, and leadership responsibility should factor into accountability systems.Other Key Topics Discussed:Differences between the comic version of Civil War and the MCU's Captain America: Civil WarThe role of secret identities in accountability debatesParallels between superhero oversight and real-world authority figuresThe impact of Vietnam and the Watergate scandal on superhero narrativesChallenges of regulating innate powers versus granted authorityThe evolution of moral complexity in comic storytellingInternational versus national jurisdiction over superheroesLeadership accountability in hierarchical organizationsBalancing security and individual rightsThe episode concludes by examining how accountability doesn't necessarily mean assuming bad intent, but rather ensuring proper systems exist to evaluate outcomes and prevent unintended harm. Even heroes acting with the best intentions need external perspectives to assess whether their actions truly serve the greater good. This is our February member bonus episode. In this episode, we’re wrapping up our three-part series on the core questions of financial stewardship with the third and final question: Whose plan are you in?  We’ll dive deep into the competing plans that vie for our attention—whether it’s the world’s relentless drive for more, a self-focused agenda, or God’s eternal plan.  Join me as we explore how aligning with God’s plan leads to true peace, purpose, and faithful stewardship in all areas of life.    In this episode, John discusses:  The importance of a plan The different plans people follow Influence of external pressures on financial decisions and direction Aligning financial stewardship with faith-based principles   Key Takeaways: The "world's plan" focuses on accumulating more through constant consumption, driven by advertising and societal pressure, but often leaves individuals feeling unfulfilled, stressed, and endlessly striving for more. Many people unknowingly follow financial plans influenced by external factors like family expectations or societal norms, leading them to make decisions by default rather than with purpose and passion. God's financial plan emphasizes using resources wisely to reflect His character, focusing on love, generosity, and eternal impact, which brings a sense of peace, contentment, and alignment with faith-driven values. Without a clear and intentional financial plan, you can easily become part of someone else's agenda, leading to decisions that conflict with your values and goals, creating internal tension and dissatisfaction. “God has a plan for your life and your family. It is a plan that reflects His unchanging character and your best life. Unlike the world's fleeting promises or a self-focused plan, God's plan is always true, always works, and always leads to peace.”     CLICK ON THE LINKS BELOW MORE MONEY MADE FAITHFUL! In this second part of our three-part series on 3 Core Questions, we're diving deep into Question #2: "Who is your provision?"  It's easy to believe that all we have comes from our own efforts, but today, we’ll dive into what it means to truly recognize God as our provider. Together, we'll unpack how this perspective shift can transform not just our finances, but our entire approach to stewardship.  Join me as we uncover how to lean on God’s abundant provision and discover the peace and freedom that comes from trusting in His perfect plan. In this episode, John discusses:  Understanding who is the ultimate provider Reflecting on the sources of financial provision Recognizing God's provision in our daily life Avoiding comparison with others' financial situations  Key Takeaways: Relying solely on one's own efforts for provision leads to stress and dissatisfaction while recognizing God as the ultimate provider brings with it more peace and a sense of gratitude. George Müller's story illustrates an unwavering faith in God's provision and how it led to miraculous outcomes, once feeding 300 orphans with unexpected bread and milk. The temptation to covet others' provision of wealth or success, distracts from the joy and contentment that come from trusting in God's personal provision. Shifting the mindset from personal provision to God's provision changes the way financial decisions are considered and made, fostering a reliance on divine wisdom rather than on personal capability or societal pressures.  “He may not always provide in the ways we expect or want him to, but his provision is always exactly what we need—nothing more, nothing less.”     Resources Mentioned: George Müller's story: https://www.georgemuller.org/ CLICK ON THE LINKS BELOW MORE MONEY MADE FAITHFUL! In this episode, we're diving into the first of three core questions that are crucial for mastering your money mindset. The first question is: Who owns your money?  While it may seem straightforward, the answer to this question profoundly influences every financial decision you make. We’ll explore how understanding true ownership can transform your approach to money, aligning your financial decisions with a deeper purpose and God's greater story. In this episode, John discusses:  Financial stewardship and its importance in your money mindset Who truly owns your money—you or God? Recognizing God's leadership of financial decisions Aligning financial choices with God's will Key Takeaways: Recognizing that God owns our money transforms our financial stewardship and our mindset, leads us to make decisions that prioritize God's plans over our personal desires, empowering our money to serve a divine purpose.  Ignoring God's ownership of our money will cause tension and stress and conflicts with God's financial plans designed for our peace and fulfillment through faithful stewardship.  By acknowledging God's ownership, we lay a strong foundation for our financial decisions, aligning them with His will and opening ourselves up even more to His promises.  Embracing God's ownership leads us to greater financial stewardship, as we navigate financial opportunites and challenges with the confidence that we are part of His larger divine purpose.   “It's not just about avoiding pitfalls; it's about embracing the abundant life that Jesus promised—a life that's rich in meaning, purpose, and incredible provision.”     CLICK ON THE LINKS BELOW MORE MONEY MADE FAITHFUL! Enjoy this fireside conversation with pops and crackles from the fireplace, as they examine the three core questions of every soul. In the first session they talk about:   Question 1 - Am I Loved? Every person everywhere wants to know if they are loved. Some (or all) of us may have love wounds where we either didn't get the love we needed or we looked for love in all the wrong places. Learn what it means to be beloved and how to rest in the truth of God's love for us.   Question 2 - Am I Safe? What fears do we carry with us that shape us? How do these fears affect our image of God? If we don't feel safe how does that affect how we relate to others? Also it's good to ask, am I a safe person? Do I listen to others or am I quick to judge? Question 3 - Do I Belong?    It is evident from an early age that we all want to belong to a group, a community. Where are we finding our safe community? Is it the right place? Are we able to be our true selves there or do we feel that we have to act or look a certain way? Do we change our behavior depending on where we are or who we are with?   RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE PODCAST Download a Study Guide for Question 1 and Questions 2 and 3 Soul Care 101 Course Scripture reading: Deuteronomy 7:7-9 Moment to Breathe: The Inner Voice by Henri Nouwen. Conversation starts at: 6:57 Dr. Price and Dr. Smith begin the conversation with the definition of shamanism, and continue with Carlos Castaneda's influence of shamanism in North America – noting the controversy surrounding the word of Castaneda, the mystical in the literary, Toltec principals and lineage, the complexities and ultimate mystery of reality and the universe, the layers of the “knowable” and the “unknowable,” brujerio/a: sorcery from the Oaxacan and Mazatec traditions, the Spanish and Catholic influence in Mexico, psychedelics, “consciousness creating technologies,” direct perception, “seeing,” the process of socialization and the ways in which these models obstruct our direct perception of the unseen world, we discuss Michael's history, his calling, and his initiation, precognitive visions, Jung's Red Book as an example of a shamanic initiation, Jung's daemon, treatment of psychotic possession, differentiating Jungian and shamanic process, prognosis of illness, and treatment, and more. Bio: C. Michael Smith is an internationally recognized Jungian psychologist, medical anthropologist, and shamanic teacher who has developed a foundation for life-mentoring drawing upon his synthesis of these traditions, originating with his book Jung and Shamanism in Dialogue. Michael draws from the best of the disciplines of Jungian psychology and cross-cultural indigenous shamanism. From them he has creatively synthesized a powerful philosophy and system Archetypal Heart Psychology which is the foundation of his work, and which employs the most potent techniques and assessment instruments for clarifying your life calling and potentiality, and has tools such as “Archetypal Diagnosis and Assessment” through a psychoshamanic technique he developed of guided “Four Archetypal Journeys” to get you cooking on all burners, so you can bring your Gifts to the world, realize your vision, or bring your creative idea into the market-place, and share it with the world. Along with this, he has developed a technology for “Locating the Little Devils,” those self-defeating tendencies and limit patterns that can disempower and keep you from manifesting your dreams. Once identified through Core Questions and Collaborative Insearching. Michael shows you how you can transmute these “little devils” into allies and resources rather than self-defeating forces that troll your best intentions. For Info on C. This is WEEK 3 of our summer series The Roaring Summer of ‘21 Series: The Best of the Best! We have gone back thru all 5 of our seasons and come up with 10 episodes that have been our most listened too and will be airing those episodes over the next 10 weeks. Today is our 8th most popular podcast, and was our 5th episode back in May 2019 - Three Core Questions of Every Soul.   SHOW NOTES In this episode we join Steve and Gwen for two sessions of their Soul Care 101 course recorded at the retreat center known as Potter's Inn at Aspen Ridge. RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE PODCAST Download a Study Guide for Question 1 and Questions 2 and 3 Soul Care 101 Course: Purchase here at the Potter's Inn Bookstore Scripture reading: Deuteronomy 7:7-9 Moment to Breathe: The Inner Voice by Henri Nouwen.
