Gabrielle Bendiner-Viani is an accomplished artist with 2 books, Contested City and a new book, The Cities We Need. Gabrielle makes work about how people connect to their neighborhoods in a communal emotional way by touring and photographing the neighborhood with individuals that live there. Dr. Lisa wants to know haw an artist as accomplished as Gabrielle is hasn't put the regular amount of navel gazing that most artists put into their work—what connects Gabrielle to these stories made personal by the people that tell them? After much discussion it seems as if Gabrielle is maybe just grounded and fulfilled on her own that she is able to be generous and connect with her neighbors by making them the stars of her art and photographs. Thinking later, after the session, I thought maybe since she got along so well and felt understood by her parents, so perhaps instead of a typical adolescent rebellion to the authority of her parents, her rebellion manifested in reaction, as a professor, to the authority of academia. About The Cities We Need Gabrielle Bendiner-Viani is an urbanist, curator, and artist practicing new modes of public arts, design, and urban research for community engagement, and is author of Contested City: Art and Public History as Mediation at New York's Seward Park Urban Renewal Area (University of Iowa Press, 2018). She is principal of the design and research studio Buscada and teaches urban studies and public art at the New School. She was a post-doctoral fellow in visual culture at the International Center of Photography and holds a PhD in environmental psychology from the Graduate Center, CUNY. She regularly consults with arts and culture organizations on community and art engagements and strategic visioning. Her creative practice has been shown at institutions including MIT, the Brooklyn Public Library, the Center for Architecture, Artists Alliance/Cuchifritos Gallery & Project Space, the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center, and Tate Britain. Her work on cities, culture, and photography has appeared in journals, including Visual Studies, Urban Omnibus, Space and Culture, Society & Space, and Buildings & Landscapes. She lives in New York City.
When it's time to practice mokuhanga outside of your comfort zone, there are several places you can go. Seminars and workshops in your hometown are great options, but what if you want to experience something different—a new culture, a new space, a new environment? One such setting is the Mokuhanga Project Space (MPS) in Walla Walla, Washington, United States. This residency allows mokuhanga artists to explore their medium in new and challenging ways. In this episode of The Unfinished Print, I speak with Keiko Hara, mokuhanga artist and co-founder of Mokuhanga Project Space, and Benjamin Selby, mokuhanga artist and Advisory Board Member at MPS. We discuss Keiko Hara's life and work, her prints, and the development of MPS. We also explore how Mokuhanga Project Space is currently run, the significance of Walla Walla, Washington as a home base, and the importance of residencies in an artist's practice. Additionally, we examine mokuhanga as a developing art form, comparing its philosophies in the West versus its perception in Japan. And finally, we touch on key concepts such as tradition and innovation in mokuhanga and so much more. Beth Garey has been involved in the Ōtepoti art scene for years. Whether that's through her education at the Otago Art School, working at the Bellamy gallery in Macandrew Bay, or her own shows. Being the public programme and gallery manager has increased Garey's art-talk, event and gallery organising savvy. In the kōrero, Garey touches on the differences of working in a commercial versus non-profit art space and how the art medium affects how they approach making their own art.
We couldn't fit all of Tiphaine De Fleurette Hunter-Brown's career titles into our, well, title, so we didn't even try. This powerhouse of a woman is a true slashie and we know that the list of titles will keep growing on a weekly, if not daily basis.Tiphaine is the creative director of The Project Space, a creative arts facility in Apollo Bay, Creative Director of Floreo Creative Web + Design and co-director of Videokills, a video and performance art-based collaborative network and festival. When starting The Project Space, Tiphaine's plan was to open an “everything space” for her community in rural Victoria. Her own feelings of isolation pushed her to create a space for creativity and possibility and open it up to others as a community resource. And that's how we met Tiphaine, through her project “The Development Lab” where we were artists in residence in 2021.Tiph's latest addition to her creative practice is slinging luscious Belizean food from her food truck, Jungle Drifter. It's fascinating how when you're an adult, you often just want to share the things you loved when you were a kid. Jungle Drifter was the natural progression for Tiph, as she needed some breathing space from her other pursuits, but still wanted to be connected to her community.Tiphaine shares it all with us, including her recipe for Belizean Fry Jacks, which is on our website.Find us @whatartistseat on Instagram and our website www.whatartistseat.com.auLinks to Tiphaine's work and anything else we chatted about:Floreo Creative instaFloreo Creative WebsiteJungle Drifter coffee and food van instaClick here to hire The Project Space on Creative SpacesSam Gant Hosted on Acast. Episode 47 of ‘All About Art': Running an Arts Project Space with Penelope Kupfer, Director of Kupfer In this episode, I sat down with Penelope Kupfer, director of the eponymous gallery and project space in Hackney, north east London. Kupfer functions as a platform for exhibitions and residencies. Opened in 2017, they have showcased the work of nearly 80 artists from different generations and geographies with a focus on those who are currently underrepresented in the London art circuit. Listen on to hear me ask Penelope about founding the project space and how it has developed since its inception. We talk about how her practice as an artist influences her work with Kupfer and vice-versa, so how collaborating with emerging artists and curators impacts her. We also touch on the topic of Motherhood, a huge theme for Penelope, and how important it is to engage in conversations around it. Kupfer also hosted the 2nd anniversary celebration for the All About Art Podcast, which was filled with opportunities such as art-world speed networking and other fun games such as Jenga, reimagined for knowledge exchange. We also conducted panel talks and exhibition tours which took place over the span of three days this April. Thank you to Penelope for coming on the podcast, and to Kupfer for the collaboration and for hosting the All About Art Podcast's second anniversary weekend! Niamh Roberts Fool's Spring, 2022 Audio reading, 4 mins 45 sec Part of the Northern Ireland Mental Health Arts Festival 2022. Niamh Roberts is an artist and poet originally from our city and a recent graduate of the Slade School of Art in London. This new installation is centred around a new piece of writing entitled Fool's Spring and consists of a bicycle rack, yellow light and poem installed in CCA's Project Space and the poem is available to download in this podcast. The title of the long form poem comes from the nick name of a fake season, naming the week of warmth that comes after winter and before ‘second winter'. It is, for the artist, a false start, a brief and urgent movement between periods of stagnancy. Niamh is interested in repeating fleeting human interventions in their environment, whether seeing a person absent-mindedly moving something from one place to another, noticing a sticker stuck on the side of a wall, or screen-shotting the bike ebay ad when noticing a butterfly on the frame. Niamh writes referencing the tone of the New Narrative movement way of writing poetry, creating auto-fiction texts that sound like they could be talking about their life, but the content comes from a wide range of sources. Adopting the idea that all sources are as valid as the other, Niamh practices a way of making in which no hierarchy exists. Fool's Spring is on view in the CCA Project Space for the duration of the Northern Ireland Mental Health Festival from Monday 9–Sunday 15 May 2022. About the artist Niamh Roberts (b.1994) is originally from Derry~Londonderry. They moved to London to study at The Slade School of Fine Art, graduating in 2018. A Pisces, a poet and an artist - they went on to read in public and exhibit sculptures, now scattered across various defunked and hard to find web-links. The story goes that young evangelist Phil Phillips embarked on a 14 day “Jewish fast” and then wandered into a toy store. He saw a figure of Skeletor and it disturbed him so much that it changed the entire course of his ministry. He then made many works intending to warn kids and parents of the “occultic” influence of children's media. The most infamous of these works is TURMOIL IN THE TOY BOX, a book by Phillips that was adapted into a documentary called DECEPTION OF A GENERATION. On this VHS co-hosted by Gary Greenwald of Eagle's Nest Ministries, the two men dig through popular 1980s children's' toy and television franchises to hunt for insidious imagery within. They don't have to look far! Scooby-Doo glorifies witches and spell books, He-Man is more powerful than God, and the Smurfs are a living representation of the death of the human body. Who better to pore over this loaded evidence with us than filmmaker, DJ, and Smurf historian Michael Bilandic? We discuss how an infantilized pop culture has essentially turned everyone into a Christian toy freak. I interviewed Mindaugas Gapševičius, who is currently the co-chair of the association. If you like my Podcast series, you can support and buy me a coffee :) I joined the Top Transdisciplinary Project Space in January 2017 and I have been collaborating with our collective members as well as external partners, artists, and scientists for various events and exhibitions. I have a specific interest in collectives, initiatives, and project spaces in general. But I did not have any specific idea to start doing this interview series until Julia from Keith F'em asked me to contribute to their online radio. So that's how Art Next Door radio show and podcast project started in mid-July, 2020. I have to share this disclaimer though… Of course, I had the idea of featuring TOP at some point, so this episode coincides with my upcoming project at TOP, scarecrow, a collaboration with my partner Korhan Erel. So this episode is very personal. Due to the lockdown in November, this project cannot be opened to public visits. The project is documented and visible on YouTube.
How do you find time for the projects that you are invested in but aren't part of your job? In today's episode I'm talking about passion projects and the work that I do off the side of my desk that brings me a lot of joy. Mentioned in this episode: -Trans and Gender Diverse Voices in LIS book project - Trans and Gender Non-Conforming Inclusion in Libraries webinar
Based in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, painters Marissa Graziano and Samuel Guy each share their experiences of pursuing art and creating a project gallery space right in their New York apartment. Named after their neighborhood, Greene House Gallery threads various artist communities together through exhibitions and programming and extends itself as a meeting grounds for guest curators and friends. In this conversation, we talk about online exhibition workarounds during the pandemic, critical responses to putting work online, the low stakes of curating your own show, and doubt--all with the hopeful sentiment of "if you build it, they will come". Since first meeting Tori during her performance of YES NIX, Tori has continued to open my ears to the different ways in which you can perceive, make and think about sound. In making her performances, she transports people into fantasy worlds employing intricate costumes, made up language, her incredibly trained and dynamic voice, as well as other theatrical devices. In this episode, Tori shares with us everything from rough vocal sketches, to performance documentation, as well as an in-depth explanation of recent performances at Transart in Bonzano Italy last September as well as her solo show at Project Space 1646 in the Hague, in the Netherlands. Passionate about idea of moving sound and creating architecture and sculpture with sound, Tori explains the importance these tools in her practice and why we want to look upwards and outwards.
