Send us a textLaura Krachun shares her son's harrowing journey with serious mental illness and the systemic failures that criminalize mental health conditions instead of treating them. Her story highlights the urgent need for better policies to support individuals with psychosis and their families.• Laura's son was misdiagnosed with ADHD before eventually being diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder at age 20• Cannabis use potentially triggered or worsened his psychotic symptoms• Despite 16 attempts to get help through ERs and police, the family faced constant rejection from healthcare facilities• Anosognosia (lack of illness awareness) prevented her son from voluntarily seeking treatment• After a violent episode, her son entered the justice system rather than receiving appropriate psychiatric care• Their state's mental health department only offers services to those who volunteer, excluding those with anosognosia• The legal system spent resources on 72 court hearings rather than on treatment• Laura advocates for Assisted Outpatient Treatment laws to bridge the gap between legal and medical systems• Better education is needed for judges, lawyers, and medical professionals about serious mental illnessWe ask that you tell everyone everywhere about Why Not Me? This episode of The Just A Mom Podcast features a conversation with parent and advocate Laura Craciun. Laura shares her journey as a parent of an adult child who suffers from a serious mental illness and how difficult it is for families of adults to help their loved ones receive the treatment they need. Laura's son's journey started right before he turned 18, at which time parents are no longer able to act on behalf of their children. Laura's son's journey has included multiple hospitalizations as well as ongoing legal issues. Laura is passionate about educating people on anosognosia (https://www.nami.org/about-mental-illness/common-with-mental-illness/anosognosia/), which is a lack of awareness of one's own illness. Laura says that 50-60 percent of those struggling with a serious mental illness also have anosognosia, and this likely interferes with the patient seeking the proper treatment. Laura wants everyone to know about Assisted Outpatient Treatment Laws. These laws work to help individuals receive proper treatment and divert them away from the justice system and inappropriate incarceration. With the rise in the legalization of marijuana, Laura also advocates for parents to understand Cannabis-induced psychosis and the rise of this problem among teens and young adults (https://learnaboutsam.org/, https://johnnysambassadors.org/stopdabbing/?gad_source=1).

From Skepticism to Competence: How American Psychiatrists Learn Psychotherapy (U Chicago Press, 2024) offers an examination of how novice psychiatrists come to understand the workings of the mind - and the nature of medical expertise - as they are trained in psychotherapy. While many medical professionals can physically examine the body to identify and understand its troubles - a cardiologist can take a scan of the heart, an endocrinologist can measure hormone levels, an oncologist can locate a tumor - psychiatrists have a much harder time unlocking the inner workings of the brain or its metaphysical counterpart, the mind. In From Skepticism to Competence, sociologist Mariana Craciun delves into the radical uncertainty of psychiatric work by following medical residents in the field as they learn about psychotherapeutic methods. Most are skeptical at the start. While they are well equipped to treat brain diseases through prescription drugs, they must set their expectations aside and learn how to navigate their patients' minds. Their instructors, experienced psychotherapists, help the budding psychiatrists navigate this new professional terrain by revealing the inner workings of talk and behavioral interventions and stressing their utility in a world dominated by pharmaceutical treatments. In the process, the residents examine their own doctoring assumptions and develop new competencies in psychotherapy. Exploring the world of contemporary psychiatric training, Craciun illustrates novice physicians' struggles to understand the nature and meaning of mental illness and, with it, their own growing medical expertise. Mariana Craciun is Associate Professor in Sociology at Tulane University. As a cultural sociologist, she is interested in the issues of expertise, professions, science, and technology. Her writings on psychotherapeutic expertise and authority and was published in top peer reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Sociology, Theory and Society, Qualitative Sociology, and the Sociology of Health and Illness. Yadong Li is a PhD student in anthropology at Tulane University.

Aproape a sosit Craciunul. In ce casa vor ajunge? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/cufarulcupovesti/message

Health Hero Show: The official Chemical Free Body Lifestyle Podcast
Episode 101 - This episode is very special to me because our special guest Nick Craciun, started his journey using some of our detox and nutrition products and following some of what I share in our group coaching community weekly webinars. Since that time Nick has lost 60 pounds, eliminated his anxiety, and become a tremendously good parent to his 12-year-old daughter. Nick is a working-class machine fabricator that works 10 hour days and now with his newfound energy not only is he a great parent he also started his own website and podcast to educate others on what he has learned that has worked so well for him. Nick is all about helping other people ignite the Health Hero inside of them and that is why I felt He would be a perfect fit for this show.
