Layer upon layer, story upon story. Seldom has so much been packed into a conversation as is packed into this one here with Robin Ince. Occasionally it unravels briefly but mostly it is an exhilarating roller coaster ride of ideas and opinions and tributes to people, who may be famous or otherwise. What they have in common is the individual impression they have made on the impressionable mind of Robin Ince. He is an ‘open book', who confesses to having had a ‘noisy head' all his life. Only in the last three years, since he accepted a diagnosis of ADHD, has the anxiety become more understandable and therefore more acceptable. Robin's public persona, as a comedian and as a writer, provides him with permission to express his frequently weird thoughts whenever he wants. He feels under less pressure nowadays to normalise his behaviour than say if he were a civil servant. He can accept his ‘haywire mind'. He accepts his lack of physical dexterity. He knows he is not ‘socially adept'. He suggests that ‘unbearable social values' may be the root cause of many people's feelings of nervousness, insecurity and anxiety. In days gone by, Robin could be stopped in his tracks by the critical voices in his head and the melancholy they brought with them. Now he recognises them for what they are, he feels safer. He has more energy to appreciate each passing moment. Robin is shaped and inspired by famous names like Alexei Sayle, Kurt Vonnegut, Barry Crimmins and Paula Rego. But also by people totally unknown to the general public, like Jamie ‘the autistic stranger' or the 24 year old, who cried at a book-signing but found comfort in what he had to say…Robin is characterised by curiosity and compassion. His odd-couple relationship with Professor Brian Cox in ‘The Infinite Monkey Cage', is grounded in mutual respect for their differences in expertise and style, while being held together by their sense of wonder at everything which surrounds them. Robin admits to being silent when seeing a therapist whose training discouraged her from prompting him. Naturally, he feels he probably talks too fast and too much. He knows he goes off on too many tangents. Robin is hypersensitive as well as hyperactive! He means you no harm. He just wants you to share his enthusiasm and be glad you crossed each other's path.Love and kindness, courtesy and compassion. Joie de vivre! As Kurt Vonnegut himself once put it, in one of his novels: “Godammit, you've got to be kind!”Then the road to personal peace really can be paved with good intentions.Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. Industry Standard 240: RIP - Best of Barry Crimmins presented by Hello Fresh (for $30 off your first week of HelloFresh, visit go to hellofresh.com and enter the promo code KATZ30)Former Air America radio writer and correspondent (2003-2006), social justice activist, internationally renowned political satirist and author of the acclaimed seven stories press book 'Never Shake Hands with a War Criminal' helped bring the Boston comedy scene into the modern age when he founded two of Boston's most fabled clubs: The Ding Ho and Stitches. Such acts as Steven Wright, Paula Poundstone, Bobcat Goldthwait, Kevin Meaney, Jimmy Tingle and many, many others cut their comedic teeth in the rooms Crimmins started at shows he produced. As the years went on, he became an activist of sorts, travelling to Nicaragua to perform political satire about the U.S. government and the Contras. The brilliant, multi-talented Barry Crimmins is also an actor, known for The Young Comedians All-Star Reunion (1986) When Stand Up Stood Out (2003), and Call Me Lucky (2015) which documents in detail his traumatic early childhood experiences of being raped my a next door neighbor in the basement of his own home. Crimmin's satirical writing and comedy routines have focused through the years on the need for political and social change. Crimmins received the "Peace Leadership Award" in 1991 from Boston Mobilization for Survival. The award was presented by Noam Chomsky. Additionally, he was honored by Community Works with the "Artist for Social Change Award" for his years of activism. In 1994, Howard Zinn presented Barry Crimmins along with Maya Angelou "The Courage of Conscience Award" from Wellesley College and the Life Experience School at the Peace Abbey in Sherborn, Massachusetts. Barry's friend Howard Zinn did the presenting that day. His work as an activist, journalist and performer has taken him everywhere from the American campaign trail to war zones in Central America to Camp Casey on the perimeter of the George W. Bush compound in Craw-Ford, Texas. On June 4, 2016, Barry shot an hour special in Lawrence, Kansas for Louis C.K.'s Pig Newton Productions. Barry is a true American comedy legend who never rests on his laurels, instead building each performance on a lifetime of remarkable experiences and a comic mind that has made him into the one-of-a-kind comic you really need to see.

The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Comedian/Activist/Political Satirist Barry Crimmins. Barry is a legend. A great mind, an author and activist and political satirist. He has been an important voice of passion and reason since the 1970s. He has stood before thousands of audiences of every size and type and told them the truth with wit and wisdom, with anger and compassion. Barry was a towering example to me when I started doing standup at age 18. He fostered the comedy scene that I cut my teeth on and later became my friend. More than all of that, I am his fan. I love his voice. He makes me laugh. He's always right. There has NEVER been another comic like him.  The great thing about comedians is that they get better with time. And I feel very lucky to be bringing you Barry's first standup special. I produced it and directed it and he worked incredibly hard over the last two years on the road shaping it and putting it together and he left every ounce of it on the stage when we filmed him. When you watch this special, you'll be seeing a great comic and a prime and only example of what comedy is at it's best. You'll see a comedian who cares about what he is saying and who brings integrity and experience and an unmatched skill as a writer to his performance.  About two years ago, Bob Goldthwait, a good friend of Barry's, produced a documentary about him titled "Call Me Lucky". It covers a whole other part of Barry's life where he made a huge impact.

Former Air America radio writer and correspondent (2003-2006), social justice activist, internationally renowned political satirist and author of the acclaimed seven stories press book 'Never Shake Hands with a War Criminal' helped bring the Boston comedy scene into the modern age when he founded two of Boston's most fabled clubs: The Ding Ho and Stitches.

"Bobcat Goldthwait directed this moving documentary about comedian and peace activist Barry Crimmins. The film is masterfully structured in such a way that it starts as a typical film about an artist, who a group of people believe more people should know. Comics who were given opportunities thanks to him or have memories of his early work appear on screen. Goldthwait then hits the audience with information about a horrific experience from Crimmins’ childhood, and the film is instantly transformed into something incredible...His brash wit and knowledge of current events produce material that still is edgy today. His material is inspired by a motivation for peace and justice...It is refreshing to know there are people in the world of comedy like Barry." - Kevin Gosztola on Shadowproof.com Instead of making Barry go through the plot of 'Call Me Lucky', we spend most of the time talking about the state of the modern comedy scene & how the Reagan-era never ended. Movies like woah on this week’s Spoilerpiece. First, Evan teases the book about ‘80s films that he’s been working on with his friend Bryan Krull, prompting a deeper conversation on ‘80s movies. Then Dave shares his thoughts on THE TRIBE because he finally saw it. Evan’s up next to talk about how THE GIFT subverts expectations, before Dave goads him into spoiling the movie’s big twist. After that, Evan and Kris discuss why they weren’t fans of AMERICAN ULTRA (hint: it’s about a stoner secret agent and plotted like a stoner wrote it). Dave follows up by quickly exploring why PEOPLE PLACES THINGS is so sluggish and by-the-numbers. And last, but not least, Kris reviews CALL ME LUCKY, a great documentary by Bobcat Goldthwait about Boston comedian and activist Barry Crimmins.

Screen Talk came to Park City for the Sundance Film Festival this week. On Wednesday, Indiewire partnered with Airbnb for a live recording of the latest episode, which took place in front of a sold-out crowd at the Airbnb Haus on Main Street. Introduced by Sundance Film Festival director John Cooper, the episode opened with Kohn and Thompson discussing this year's festival buzz and their different approaches to prioritizing films over the course of the chaotic proceedings. Taking a cue from the Airbnb Haus' theme of "strangers meeting strangers," they reflected on the value of meeting new filmmakers and encountering fresh visions in the festival environment. Then, they spoke with Crystal Moselle, the director of "The Wolfpack," which is currently playing in the festival's U.S. documentary competition and was recently picked up by Magnolia Pictures. Moselle explained how she found the fascinating subjects of her movie, which revolves around a group of siblings forced to remain indoors for most of their lives while learning everything about the world from the movies. Finally, the hosts welcomed standup comedian and filmmaker Bobcat Goldthwait, whose documentary "Call Me Lucky" is also screening in competition. Goldthwait discussed the intentions behind his project, which focuses on outspoken political activist and comedian Barry Crimmins, as well as the role that Robin Williams played in getting the project off the ground. Goldthwait, who considered Williams his best friend, also discussed why he treasures his longtime friendship with the late actor. Later, Goldthwait elaborated on his newfound affinity for the independent film community. The episode concluded with an audience Q&A.
