Bonus: Another Mass Shooting Killing Children at Nashville Covenant School; what will Upend Violence?

The NeoLiberal Round

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 29, 2023 16:22

Mass shootings in the US are a daily occurrence nowadays. Our children in the US the most affected and gun violence is the number 1 cause of death among children in the US. Just yesterday a middle school in Nashville Covenant School was attacked by a mass shooter. Here's an opportunity to fix the problem. How do we do it, by using the same arguments regarding reforming guns. Why are we so myopic, limited and cliched in our thinking. It's always first to reform #guns. But mass shootings go beyond the gun and there are strong arguments to preserve the right to bear arm when you think that Americans is the most weaponized of all civilian and armed forces int he world. No country will launch a ground offensive on the US as they must contend with the local and official militias. And there is no place for a coup like the one in Venezuela here in the US given the civilians ability to bear arm and protect such attack against its democracy. Moreover, in countries where the gun laws are most restrictive such as in Jamaica, does not necessarily mean reduction in gun violence, it may only lead to an underground market. That being said, we have to look at what is happening in society that is creating this problem. It may include an issue of human nature, lack of critical thinking and the demise of the human conscience developed within the celebration of spiritual and psychological disciplines, experiences which are becoming obsolete and redundant, transplanted by the new secularism and its technology, a new thinking that cannot integrate liberality with inspiration. Where is the Mennonite Church that had #conflictresolution efforts and initiatives? What has happened to customer service and Human resources in society that had helped to protect and promote that humanness and provided agency? Outsourced? What has happened to prayer and solitude? Sunday mornings are in front of the video games playing "#grandtheftauto" or the #realhousewives and rap sensationalizing rage and resolving matters through violence that sensationalize. On the other hand, politicians fight over issues that delimits agency to those feeling discriminated against already. All this has fueled a #cain-like attack, brother on brother. There is an anger and rage that is leading to a violent resolve. The latest shooter we learn was a former student of the school who was a transgender, and we know recently DeSantis is pushing for reforming the law in Florida on sexual identity. The Monterey shooter was taking out an unresolved customer service issue in violent rage on the entire club and then there was CVPA and the teen utilizing replacement ideology. We also did a podcast asking: What will upend violence? https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/what-will-end-violence-boys-and-the-need-for/id1577359542?i=1000596154300. Crime and Violence continues to spiral out of control and the perpetrators are young men 10-25 who constitute the age group with the highest rates of arrest for all offenses and especially violent crimes, murders and robberies. Recently, 2 persons were killed, and 7 others were injured after a lone gunman. 19-year-old African American, Orlando Harris, went to his former high school CVPA with an AR-15 & over 600 rounds of ammo. Harris killed 16-year-old Alexandria Bell, who was a beautiful young lady with a promising career in the visual and performing arts. The second, was Jean Kuczka, a 61-year-old physical Ed teacher. The question on all our minds after this is, another shooting and why did he do this? Why would a young man with no prior criminal record become so violent that he would be so enraged has to turn his former school into a battleground. According to reports from eyewitnesses and victims, the gunman shouted just before he started to shoot, “you're all going to die.” Another student heard him say, “I'm tired of this d…” school and “I hate this d*** school.” Taniya Gholston, 16, was in the dance class when the shooting started. “He said like, ‘I'm tired of this damn school,' and, ‘I'm tired of everybody in this damn school,'” she said. If those words reveal anything, it is that Harris was frustrated and troubled and seem to blame the school and sought to resolve the problem through what he believe was the only way that resolve his problems. For Harris, the school was the source of his problem and sought to kill everyone except the ballet teacher Raymond Harris. That was inconsistent with his statement that everyone was gonna die at the school yet he stopped short of killing this particular teacher. This needs further investigation and understanding as to why he changed his mind about this teacher. Nevertheless he carried out his heinous plan but due to quick response by the police, was taken out before he could continue his rampage. Press conference reports by the local police suggested that there are unconfirmed reports that Harris had a mental illness in the past but this has not been confirmed, however he left a note saying he felt isolate. Nevertheless, the issue of motive goes beyond Orlando Harris, and must be situated within the wider concern that Crime and Violence continues to spiral out of control and the perpetrators are young men like Orlando ages 10-25…Social movement theory asserts that when one begin to see other people, they begin to compare themselves drawing conclusions about themselves relative to that position. This theory then leads to a conclusion from scientific research and various studies within Social Marxist Materialism of Relative Deprivation, where society of higher income inequality are more prone to higher crime rates than communities that have lower income inequality. Today, US national data and PEW research studies show that crime has spiked and that much of it is occurs within certain cities and communities. The cities that has experienced rapid increases in violent crimes with a weapon and robberies are among the poorest with higher levels of people of colour including St. Louis Missouri where CVPA is located. St. Louis overtook Detroit as the most violent cities in the US with the highest murder rates. While at the same time, St. Louis is among the cities with the highest inequality/disparities with a Gini coefficient of between 0.9 and 1.2. Blunt Dissection: The best minds in veterinary medicine, academia & business profiled so you can learn from their experience.

Today’s guest is the global high priest of veterinary business John Sheridan. John, one of the profession's true trail blazers and his journey stretches back to a wartime education during The Blitz and early clinical experience in the Herriot Era of practice. He stood at ground zero for veterinary corporatisation in the UK when he set up Veterinary Practice Initiatives back in 1998. And he reaches into the future and remains on the cutting edge of thought leadership and content production publishing weekly on his blog and also the vet business video show - currently approaching episode 200. Now did I mention that in addition to his veterinary degree from the RVC, John was president of both the British Small Animal Veterinary Association and the Veterinary Practice Management Association? Plus he holds a diploma in practice management, the CVPM and just because he’s showing off, the CVPA. He jointly authored the 'Business of Veterinary Practice' Book and recently received a Pioneer Professional Member Award from Vet Partners, the only non-US recipient of this award to date. If you are starting to feel like a sad underachiever then you are not the only one in the room! I almost daren't go onto his roll call for speaking credits which is insanely long and would take an episode to list itself. Suffice to say, John knows his stuff and people over the past four decades have listened intently. I certainly did and still do, John is one of my Veterinary Heroes having a massive influence on my career. So it was a pleasure to have him as a guest on Blunt Dissection - hopefully I’m not too much of a fanboy! In this episode, he gives a master class (in his charming way) on how to take risk, network like a pro, push through fear, learn from other people, how to start up a vet hospital and why no-one, but no-one wants to be the average client. Plus he practically gives away a blue print for what veterinary practice will look like five year from now. If that’s not a valuable way to spend an hour of your time I don’t know what is. So sit back and enjoy John Sheridan’s interview on episode six of Blunt Dissection. Also covered in this episode: * How the RCVS came to allow non-vet ownership and the rise of corporate medicine. * His fund raising journey and why no-one should start up a business without 1 a plan, and 2 having enough money (hint more than you think) to get going. * How he would set up a veterinary practice if he were starting from scratch in today’s veterinary environment. * Johns opinion on why nurses are leaving the profession in droves. * Why he is bullish in the future of the profession but is concerned that we are in danger of missing out on the technological and information revolution in healthcare for the independent sector.
