Robotaxis from companies like Waymo are already rolling onto roads across America, whehter or not cities are ready for them. How can cities take back their power and put shared autonomous vehicles in their proper place, understand what impact they're having on local transportation goals, and avoid amplifying some of the worst impacts of old-school car dependency? Today on The Brake, we're talking to Josh Naramore of the National Association of City Transportation Officials, which released a new report on how cities can meet the robotaxi revolution, and do it on their terms. And if they do it right, they can do it without losing momentum on building livable streets for people outside cars, too.
In this insightful interview, Bruno Carvalho discusses the invention of the future, urban development, and the impact of technological and societal changes on cities from Lisbon to the US. Trent and Bruno explore how history, religion, law, and innovation shape our cities and societies, with a focus on creating sustainable, inclusive, and adaptable urban environments. More about is new book: THE INVENTION OF THE FUTURE: A History of Cities in the Modern World. The future has always been inextricable from urban planning. As the sea level rises and the effects of climate change become harder to ignore, plans for futuristic urban centers like Saudi Arabia's mirrored megacity (The Line) and a floating city in the Maldives make for splashy headlines. Our modern cities—sources of greenhouse gas emissions and water pollution, overcrowding and urban sprawl—pale in comparison. Bruno Carvalho argues in THE INVENTION OF THE FUTURE that while modern-day New York City may not be designed for a period of climate emergency, its nineteenth-century architects certainly had the future in mind when laying out the plans. Carvalho details the feats of engineering that restored Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake, transformed Paris from a medieval city into a grand metropolis, and made sprawling cities like Manhattan easier to plan and develop via the implementation of a grid system. He considers how technological innovations (steel, steam-powered engines, automobiles) and social change (the abolition of slavery, the overthrow of colonial rule) led to the rapid growth and expansion of cities in the global South, from Buenos Aires to Brasilia to Lagos. The future may appear bleak from our vantage point, but “there is a lot of space for reinvention,” Carvalho writes, “and if we must reinvent, there might be no better place to look than the history of the future.”Bruno Carvalho is a professor at Harvard University, where he teaches courses on cities. He is the author of Porous City: A Cultural History of Rio de Janeiro. The Hidden Lightness with Jimmy Hinton – In American cities, political rallies and protests underscore intense domestic division: for some, military action represents a necessary defense of national interests; for others, it signals a dangerous rush to reprise past wars. In the wake of the shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti in the streets of Minneapolis, several prominent tech executives attended a private White House screening of Melania, a documentary being released by Amazon MGM Studios. The timing was not lost on the group of Silicon Valley workers who recently launched ICEout.tech, essentially an open letter to their bosses. The letter, posted following Renee Nicole Good's killing earlier this month, has now been signed by more than 1,000 tech employees. Those workers, who come from across the spectrum of Big Tech companies and startups, are asking that executives use their clout to demand Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents leave American cities, that they cancel company contracts with the agency, and that they speak publicly about ICE's violent and deadly tactics. Katie talks to two of the signatories in this week's episode. Join WIRED's best and brightest on Uncanny Valley as they dissect the collision of tech, politics, finance, and business, from Alexis Ohanian's newest tech venture to the effects of inaccurate information from artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots on social protests. Across the United States, cities are acting as climate first responders - carrying climate action forward even as national politics grow more hostile. From clean energy and buildings to transport, land use and resilience to extreme weather events, mayors are proving that climate leadership does not depend on federal permission. It grows from proximity: to people, to impacts, and to the places leaders are entrusted to protect. Cities are stepping in to safeguard neighbourhoods, rivers, urban ecosystems and public health, often while the federal government undermines climate policy or attacks local authority.Featured guests:Keith Wilson, Mayor of Portland, Oregon, USAKirk Watson, Mayor of Austin, Texas, USAJuliet Oluoch, Research fellow at Ustawi Analytica and youth climate activist from Nairobi, KenyaLinks:Solved: How the World's Great Cities Are Fixing the Climate Crisis by David MillerThe Fate of the Inflation Reduction Act in the Second Era of Trump - Cities 1.5Trump signs order to withdraw US from Paris climate agreement for second time - The Guardian‘Poet, writer, wife, mom': who was Renee Nicole Good, the woman killed by an ICE agent? - The GuardianMayor Keith Wilson Announces Portland Has Reached more than 1,500 Emergency Overnight Beds, Delivered at Unprecedented Speed - Portland.govCostumed protesters in Portland defy description of the city as a 'war zone' - NBC NewsAustin Climate Equity Plan$3,000 grants offered to groups addressing climate change and food access challenges - Austin MonitorMore links for this episode available at jccpe.utpjournals.press and c40.org.If you want to learn more about the Journal of City Climate Policy and Economy, please visit our website at https://jccpe.utpjournals.press/ Listen to the Cities 1.5 five-part miniseries “Going Steady with Herman Daly: How to Unbreak the Economy (and the Planet)" here: https://lnk.to/HDMiniSeries Cities 1.5 is produced by the University of Toronto Press and the C40 Centre, and is supported by C40 Cities. Arguing that some places in the United States – primarily those governed by Democratic officials – are rampantly crime-infested, President Donald Trump has been deploying military forces to cities from Los Angeles to Washington, DC. Former National Security Council official Kori Schake tells host Steve Clemons that Trump is trying to enlist the US military to get involved in his culture war issues, such as immigration and political dissent. She warns that US forces should be kept out of politics “so that the American public continues to have confidence and trust in the military”.
President Trump recently said he'd like to use US cities as “training grounds” for the military. And he's trying to send the National Guard into places like Portland, Oregon, and Chicago. Expanded, domestic use of the military – and talk of civil war – deserve scrutiny… no matter who's president. As President Trump talks about fighting a war against "the enemy within," we speak with a political scientist about the implications. Then, in Day 1 of the government shutdown, we speak with our Washington reporter Caitlyn Kim. Also, college campuses are microcosms of a lot of the big issues society grapples with, from cultural clashes to the cost of living. The president of Colorado Mesa University offers potential solutions to those issues. And, Colorado Wonders why this airport is named "Happy Butt."

In this quick hit, Rev. Renaldo C. McKenzie asks the hot question: does sending in the National Guard make cities safer—or merely look tough on TV? From Chicago to D.C., we weigh the constitutional limits on federal troop deployments, the real costs of “boots on blocks,” and the deeper drivers of violence—relative deprivation, inequality, and shrinking opportunity. If crime is born of scarcity and status gaps, can soldiers solve what schools, jobs, and housing leave undone? Short, sharp, and straight to the point—policy over posturing. Stephen Miller says mass migration is a transfer of wealth from Americans to illegals, corporations and the political power. Trump sends message that maybe he will be in charge of the Federal Reserve. The [DS] is panicking across the globe, the Iran scheme is falling apart, the regime is now collapsing and Trump has the upper hand. EU has now jumped in because they see the writing on the wall and wants to have negotiations with Iran. The FBI is now turning over documents showing that the 2020 election was rigged and the [DS] over through the US government. Trump has let the [DS] and the people know that he is no longer the hunted, he is now the hunter. Economy https://twitter.com/StephenM/status/1935171750033244244 The Trump Economic Reality Check: What the First Six Months Really Tell Us A notable improvement in job creation is that, since January, all job gains have gone to native-born Americans, reversing the Biden-era trend where foreign-born workers captured a disproportionate share. Under Biden, foreign-born employment rose by 20%, compared to just 3.5% for native-born workers. In contrast, Trump-era data shows that over 500,000 new jobs through May 2025 went exclusively to native-born Americans. Real wages are also improving. Real average hourly earnings rose 1.2 percent from February 2024 to February 2025, and 1.4 percent from March to March. Wage growth has outpaced inflation each month, giving workers increased purchasing power. Tariff revenue has soared. In April, customs duties reached $16.3 billion, almost double March's $8.75 billion and more than double April 2024's $7.1 billion. By May, revenue surged to around $23 billion. From October 2024 through April 2025, total collections hit $59.2 billion, well above the $44.1 billion over the same period in FY2024. Analysts estimate 2025 tariffs could generate $2.7 trillion over 10 years if maintained, though offset by an estimated $394 billion in negative economic impact. Trump's tariff policy has sparked a wave of manufacturing announcements. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company committed $100 billion for five U.S. plants. NVIDIA pledged $500 billion in supercomputer partnerships, Apple committed $500 billion over four years, and Johnson & Johnson announced $55 billion in manufacturing investments. These reflect the reshoring and foreign investment goals behind the tariff strategy. Instead, Fed officials are on track to extend their wait-and-see posture on Wednesday. Source: wsj.com Political/Rights https://twitter.
