In Episode Six, Dave Reis speaks with internationally renowned, award-winning jazz musician and centenarian, Terry Gibbs, via Zoom from Australia! Terry Gibbs, was born Julius Gubenkon in 1924. The renowned American jazz vibraphonist and band leader is 101 years old! According to his Wikipedia page, Gibbs has performed or recorded with many of the greatest names in Jazz, including  Tommy Dorsey, Chubby Jackson, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Alice Coltrane, Louie Bellson, Charlie Shavers, Mel Tormé, and Buddy DeFranco to name just a few. "I am the oldest bebopper alive!” proclaims 93-year-old Terry Gibbs, according to an article in Jazz Times, "This forefather of the jazz vibraphone may well be right; age-wise he beats out his closest competitors, including Roy Haynes (92), Jimmy Heath (91), Lee Konitz (90) and Sheila Jordan (89). Certainly, few musicians of any age can top his ability to whip up a storm of excitement on his instrument." Welcome Peggy Call-Conley, a local artist who earned her BFA in Art Education from Southeastern Massachusetts University, today the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, in 1972. Her early exposure to the arts in Boston and her solace in nature in rural Middleborough (AKA Middleboro) Massachusetts, deeply influenced her artistic journey. Peggy has spent 35 years teaching art in private and public schools while residing in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts. Her watercolor paintings are inspired by the natural beauty and coastal landscapes she encounters. She aims to capture the energy and tranquility of these scenes, focusing on subtle color changes, contrasting light, and the unique shapes of shadows. Her work is characterized by its ability to evoke, as she relates, "a strong sense of place and momentary harmony with nature." Peggy's artistic process involves painting on location, allowing her to authentically convey the essence of her subjects, whether it's the serene coastal views or intricate architectural details. On this podcast, Peggy Call-Conley speaks with The Artists Index's cofounder, documentarian, and podcast host, Ron Fortier, about her continuing journey and mission to share her art and her love of teaching. Steve's guests are Charles Derber and Yale Magrass, authors of Who Owns Democracy: The Real Deep State and the Struggle Over Class and Caste in America. The concept of the deep state has been employed by different political ideologies, most recently the right under Trump. But its existence is real, and its service to the ruling class can be traced back to the founding of the US. Among other ideas, Charles and Yale stress the distinction between shallow democracy and the real thing. From their book's abstract: “Large corporations, Wall Street, and other sectors of the capitalist class outsource day-to-day governance to the mainstream political parties, which can compete vigorously and create a credible veneer of civil liberties and electoral democracy, disguising and legitimating the deep state. But it is a “shallow democracy,” since the deep state sets boundaries on policies and choices to serve itself. It also denies a universal franchise and obstructs the voting rights of people of color, the poor, and other communities threatening to the deep state. Moreover, the deep state constrains civic governance in the workplace and community, denying virtually all working people democratic control over their economic and social life.” The episode's conversation examines a historical and contemporary concept of caste in the US, which some of our listeners may find surprising. The discussion also covers contradictions within the capitalist class, the impact of the military-industrial complex, and the potential implications of the upcoming election. Charles Derber, Professor of Sociology at Boston College, is a public sociologist and life-long activist who writes about structural and cultural analysis of capitalism, public goods, the environment, and social movements seeking transformational change, He is the author of twenty-eight books. Yale Magrass is a Chancellor Professor of Sociology at University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. He is the author/co-author of nine books, most co-authored with Charles Derber, and 80 articles. Marina DelVecchio, PhD, launched her memoir, Unsexed: Memoirs of a Prostitute's Daughter after ten years of being unsexed in her marriage and getting divorced, because of trauma and mixed messages she received about sex for women. In this episode, Marina talks about writing her book to understand why she was so touch-averse, patriarchal effects on sexuality, and how trauma trickles into how we parent our children. "I clear tables when I talk about women's issues," Marina says, of her frankness on such subjects. Unsexed examines the role that sex plays in the life of one woman with two mothers who introduce her to polarized frameworks of female sexuality. Born in Greece to a violent prostitute and then adopted at age 8 by a cold and unloving virgin from New York, Marina inherits a sexual identity steeped in fear and shame—one that, as she grows older and becomes a wife and mother, trickles into her marriage and the parenting of her children. Without the tools needed to understand her complex mothers or to unpack the lessons they taught her, Marina relies on self-erasure to survive relationships that silence and define her—until she finally becomes fed up with those old patterns and begins to stand in her own power. A memoir that unearths the layered emotional and sexual lives of women and exemplifies the satisfaction that comes when they assert their voices and power, Unsexed speaks to millions of women who have different narratives but face similar struggles in reclaiming their voices, bodies and sexuality. Marina is a former high school English teacher with 20 years' teaching experience in literature, creative and academic writing and research. She has acquired an MS in English and Secondary Education from Queens College in New York, thirty credits towards her Doctorate at St. John's University in New York, specializing in Gender Studies, 19th and 20th Century American Literature, and Feminist Criticism, and an MFA in Creative Writing from the Queens University in Charlotte. She has also completed a Certificate in Women's Studies from the University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth and teaches writing, women's studies, and literature as a full-time Professor at a community college in North Carolina. She has received several awards for her writing from The Writer's Digest Annual Writing Competition (2011-2015), and her work has been published by The Huffington Post, The New Agenda, WE Magazine for Women and BlogHer. She has worked as a contributing book reviewer of women's literature for Her Circle Ezine and as Assistant Editor of Poetry and Non-Fiction for QU Literary Magazine (2014-15). In print, her work has been published by Cengage Learning's anthology on Media and Violence Against Women (2013) and She Writes' collection of essays titled Three Minus One (2014). She was a finalist in the 2015 Tiferet Writing Contest, and her craft essay on writing immersion memoirs was published by The Tishman Review in June 2016. Her other book publications include Dear Jane (2019), The Professor's Wife (2021) and The Virgin Chronicles (2022). Currently represented by the Keller Media Literary Agency for a nonfiction project related to music and female sexuality, Marina has established a strong online presence via her writing on empowering girls and women through education, positive female role models and writing as an act of resistance. Marina teaches college students women's studies and literature through the lens of bibliotherapy, guiding her students to connect with literary heroes who write for power and self-assertion. This podcast, Podcast Episode 187, offers a little background into an upcoming and remarkable opportunity to learn about the phenomenal, historic, and impactful jazz community with its deep roots in the Cape Verdian community of New Bedford, Massachusetts. Jazz in the South Coast is still thriving and continues to make history. Local businessman Neal Weiss, a jazz aficionado, entrepreneur, and the founder of the Fiber Optic Center is underwriting this ten-part jazz podcast series. There is no better host for this series than Dave Reis, a walking, talking jazz encyclopedia and local legend himself. Dave grew up surrounded by and hanging around with many of the jazz greats he will be presenting his new jazz podcast series. Stay tuned for The Fiber Optic Center's Jazz Podcast Series with your host Dave Reis, which launches later this month. The Artists Index wants to say thank you in advance of the series launch to the Fiber Optic Center for underwriting this series and helping us to continue our mission. Neal is also the founder of Whaling City Sound, which Dave will tell you all about! Dave Reis has always wanted to promote Jazz musicians. WUMD signed off around noontime on a Monday in June of 2017 after 42 years of broadcasting. According to a Fall River Herald article, on “May 1, the Federal Communications Commission approved the sale of UMass Dartmouth's 9,800-watt WUMD (89.3 FM) radio license to Rhode Island Public Radio...” Jazz was and continues to be Dave's passion. He grew up in a house with Jazz musicians and taught a class with former Southcoast Learning Network. Her work has been exhibited at The Woodmere Art Museum (Philadelphia, PA), the New Bedford Museum of Art (New Bedford, MA) and the Sori Art Center (Jeollabuk-do, South Korea). Suzanne attended Indiana University (M.F.A. ‘08), the University of Pennsylvania (B.F.A. ‘04) and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (Certificate ‘03); she is an Associate Professor of Art and Design at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.    “My paintings focus on the intersection of caretaking, motherhood, and creative practice. This work began just before the pandemic through conversations with other mothers and caretakers about balancing creative practice (be it writing, music, running or painting) with daily care responsibilities. My images are based on a mother or a caretaker, and I paint a studio for them.    Through painting, research, and installation, I continue to analyze and imagine new ways that motherhood and artistic practice contribute to each other. My paintings invent spaces for nocturnal women, working against distraction in marginal hours of the day. These works are on paper due to a material shift that enabled me to paint at home on a smaller scale at the start of the pandemic.  I am rediscovering color for myself in these works, finding new networks dictated by the twilight of a fluorescent painting ground. I intend these spaces to be more psychological than physical. They are not about escape; they are about a deep desire to reflect and refuel.   My work is inspired by a desire for solitary space, which was so valuable during the pandemic. In quarantine, I occupied more time with those I care for, making flashes of solitude particularly rare. Increasingly, my buildings struggle to hold the figure inside, or the women get to work before the structure is complete. This often leaves an open edge between architecture and landscape, no longer making the studio a fixed place.” LINKS:  www.suzanneschireson.com @suzanneschireson   I Like Your Work Links: Check out our sponsor for this episode: The Sunlight Podcast: Hannah Cole, the artist/tax pro who sponsors I Like Your Work, has opened her program Money Bootcamp with a special discount for I Like Your Work listeners. This episode is rated a 4 (on my Serious Crime Scale). It's one of those truly puzzling stories that will leave you scratching your head, racking your brain, and just really wondering… WHERE IS HE??? In this episode, I tell you the story of University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth student Charles Allen Jr., affectionately known as Charlie to his friends and family. In October of 2007, Charlie made plans to attend a party with his best friend, Mason; but when the two were supposed to meet up on campus to drive to the party together, Charlie never showed. And that wasn't the only odd, out-of-character behavior from Charlie. Earlier that same day, he had a bizarre and frantic conversation with his sister, and he left a separate, panicky, out-of-breath voicemail on each of his parents' cellphones – which was the last time anyone ever heard from him. Charlie has officially been missing since October 12, 2007, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions. But here's where it gets even stranger -- shortly before his disappearance, Charlie legally changed him name to Neo Babson Maximus, adding another layer of complexity to this already perplexing case. How this interview happened Some people ask me how I get these great guests to appear on my podcast, well the secret is PodMatch. This site is where podcasters and guests go to find each other. Grey had messaged me a while ago and when I saw he was into abstract art immediately I knew I needed him on the show. His experience in abstract art and the projects he is pursuing with Energy Portraits are astounding. I definitely wanted to hear his thoughts about abstract art and was really intrigued by his energy portraits as they seem to be similar to tarot reading for me. Grey Coutts Bio Grey Coutts is a Los Angeles-based artist who explores spirituality through his work. Initially, he stumbled into art as a means of self-discovery through experimentation and curiosity. In 2013, he earned a degree in Graphic Design from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, unaware of the artistic potential that lay ahead. His interest in abstract paintings sparked a fascination with the inexplicable images he saw, which pulled him towards creative expression. Coutts is renowned for his use of vivid colors and abstract paintings. He is also a Creative Director in the music industry, employing acrylic, spray paint, and collage materials to create his signature style of "the drip," which harnesses the force of gravity. In his artwork, Coutts taps into the flow of creative energy to produce unique, emotionally expressive pieces. He infuses his creations with energy and emotion, representing the inner workings of the soul and the journey of individuals through time and space. His use of color and intense marking reflects the energy surrounding him and others daily. Recently, Coutts has integrated his spiritual studies with his client work, creating "Energy Portraits" that capture the essence of the client by tuning into their energy. Coutts resides in Hollywood, CA, where he continues to experience life and create art. His life is a whirlwind of ongoing education and research; all fueled by his immense passion for life, learning and helping others. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and receiving a degree in both Accounting and Finance, he turned his talents to Corporate Accounting and then on to Financial Advising. As a result of a hockey injury and being prescribed opioids things began to decline over the next several years, ultimately leading him to the Ibogaine Clinic where he met David Dardashti. What kindled Cole's fiery passion about Ibogaine? First, he himself was treated by David Dardashti, for executive burnout and Suboxone dependence. This experience was so profound he left the financial world behind and joined his mentor David Dardashti, where he has been learning and developing ibogaine treatment protocols under David's guidance. David Dardashti, founder of the Ibogaine Clinic has helped over 3,500 individuals since establishment 15 years ago. He credits his learning and abilities to 37 years of study of the Talmud and Kabbalah. His studies include the inner workings of the human psyche – both conscious and subconscious – and the role it plays in trauma and substance abuse. In response to a dramatic increase in substance abuse, depression, and PTSD, David began the development of an Ibogaine treatment program and medical research center, the original Ibogaine Clinic also known as Ibogaine by David Dardashti. Many faiths feature clothing they consider part of their religious identity or obligation. Muslim women don headscarves. Jewish men wear yarmulkes. Sikh men cover their hair with turbans. Married Hindu couples sport sacred threads. These are all visible symbols of commitment. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have adopted religious clothing known as “temple garments” to remind them of covenants they have made. But they are worn under street clothes — and are meant to be invisible to others. This spring, Larissa Kindred, a former Latter-day Saint and recent graduate of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, created an online “snowball survey” to reach out to Latter-day Saint women about what they like — and dislike — about wearing garments. On this week's show, Kindred discusses her research, the responses and conclusions. She also focuses on the challenges Latter-day Saint women face spiritually, physically, emotionally and socially in wearing the garments — and how the apparel affects their body image.

In this episode, Michael speaks with Dan Holland. Dan is a senior scientist at the Northwest Fisheries Science Center within the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA.  Dan joined the Northwest Fisheries Science Center in 2010. Prior to that he held positions with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, the New Zealand Seafood Industry Council, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and the Alaska Fisheries Science Center. He is an affiliate professor at the University of Washington, Chair of the Science and Statistical Committee of the Pacific Fishery Management Council, an associate editor of Marine Resource Economics, and is a former President of the International Institute for Fisheries Economics and Trade (IIFET). Michael and Dan talked about several aspects of Dan's research, which is focused primarily on design and evaluation of fishery management tools and strategies. In particular, they discussed Dan's research related to catch share policy, which involves placing a cap on the total allowable catch (TAC) for a species and a distributing a tradeable quota that is allocated to a group of fishers in proportion to this cap. These policies have been both quite popular and controversial, and Dan's research can help us think about the mechanics of some of the most critical issues involved, including how to balance the costs and benefits of individual vs. collective fishing rights, options for limiting bycatch and dealing with choke species via quota pooling, and how to these relate to the idea of ecosystem management.
