Send us a textBefore the World Premiere of his very first play, Judson Jones streamed into the Playwright's Spotlight. We discussed his background in theatre, film, and television and his journey to writing his first play and any challenges he overcame. We dove into hitting  the flow state, introducing new ideas, the appreciation of new works, storytelling through Post-It notes, working with deadlines, collaborating with designers and the benefits of simplicity and justification as well as eliminating and having an outside eye. We wrap with delving into devices vs dialogue, working with sensitive subject matter, writing out of order, and observing the loss of grace in society. It's a very heartwarming conversation. Enjoy!  His play Canaan Unremembered opened March 24th at the Court Square Theater in Long Island City, New York and runs through April 19th, 2025. Steven sings some amazing songs and talks about The BareNakedLadies, Trans-Canada Highwaymen, the creative process, blowing up your life, breaking up with your partners, repairing your life, finding freedom working for yourself, being a self starter, zoom shows, Brian Wilson, Yoko Ono, band camp, and getting pelted with mac & cheese. Bio: Over the last thirty-five years, Steven Page has established himself as one of the most recognizable and enduring voices in music. The release of his latest album, Excelsior, shows that he has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. Since its release, Steven has toured Canada, The US and the UK with The Steven Page Trio, and has performances planned well into 2024. As a co-founder, vocalist and songwriter for Barenaked Ladies, Steven sang and wrote classics like “Brian Wilson,” “If I Had A Million Dollars,” “What A Good Boy,” “It's All Been Done” and many more. With the band, he sold over 15 Million albums and scored multiple Junos, Billboard Music Awards, SOCAN awards, Gemini Awards and two Grammy nominations. After leaving the band in 2009, Steven embarked on a solo career that has produced five solo albums, including 2022's Excelsior, and has seen him tour worldwide, from folk festivals to cabarets and theatres, all the way to packed arenas on his recent string of dates opening for rock legends The Who.  Steven performs in many configurations, from solo to full band with horn section, but, since 2016, he has been playing most often with his pals in The Steven Page Trio, Craig Northey of Vancouver legends Odds on guitar, and Kevin Fox on cello. The trio configuration provides the right amount of portability, intimacy and power to fill just about any venue imaginable. Steven has performed arrangements of some of his best-loved songs from his long career with orchestras including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Victoria Symphony, Symphony New Brunswick and has more symphony shows on the horizon in the next two years. A passionate mental health advocate, Steven has been in demand as a public speaker since 2011, sharing his own story with audiences across North America. In 2018, Steven was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame with his former bandmates in Barenaked Ladies, at the Juno Awards Ceremonies in Vancouver. In 2020, when work on the musical he wrote with playwright Daniel MacIvor for Canada's Stratford Festival, Here's What It Takes, was interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, Steven began performing weekly livestream concerts over Zoom, Steven Page Live From Home. These Live From Home shows, sometimes selling 1000 tickets at a time, cultivated a tightly-knit community of music fans from all over the world, and kept them feeling connected when it was most needed. Steven continues to perform Live From Home shows on Saturdays when he's not on the road, with the 100th episode planned for early in 2023.  The Governor-General's Performing Arts Awards approached Steven in 2021 about writing a song as a surprise tribute to his friend, Ryan Reynolds, and the result was “Canada Loves You Back,” a song as poignant, humourous and Canadian as the actor it honours. Steven is a frequent collaborator with Toronto's Art of Time Ensemble, made up of some of Canada's best classical, jazz and pop musicians. With them, he released an album of covers, A Singer Must Die, in 2009, and also appears on their Sgt. Pepper and Songs of Leonard Cohen albums. Along with Chris Murphy (Sloan), Moe Berg (The Pursuit of Happiness), and Craig Northey (Odds), Steven makes up a quarter of The Trans-Canada Highwaymen, four lead singers of classic Canadian bands, whose first album of Canadian covers is set to be released in the fall of 2023.

Abdulaziz and his guest Braidan Patrick discuss the play BEST BROTHERS BUNNY AND HER TWO SONS ARE ‘THE BEST BROTHERS’ February 19, 2020 By Abdulaziz Yusufjanov BasBleu theatre in Fort Collins Colorado opened the 2020 year with a one act play about family and faith “The Best Brothers” written by Daniel MacIvor and directed by Lynn Bogner. This intricately played black comedy is at the BasBleu theatre here in Fort Collins through Feb 23rd. Featuring two actors, Jeffrey Bigger who plays Hamilton Best, and Kevin Crowe plays the other brother Kyle Best. “This play reminds us that love can come in many forms and romantic love is not the end-all-be-all” says the director Maclover; he also explains this mini-journey of a non-romantic love for a deceased mother will hit home for many. Two brothers make funeral arrangements for their dead mother. This play is perfect for those who would like a little bit of black comedy to chuckle at and see a gay themed progressive play. There are many comedy scenes scattered throughout the play and one of the two brothers is gay and the other is just as controlling. The story is built around the death of their mother who died at a LGBT parade, and the concept of a rainbow lifestyle is brought up many times throughout the 80 min One act. Playwright MacIvor past work has been powerful monologue performance including Here Lies Henry, Monster, and his first multicharacter play Marion Bridge. The Best Brothers is his is first black comedy and it almost works. In this story the two brothers are in the housing industry, one of them, Hamilton, is a house designer and the queer brother Kyle is a real-estate agent. They hear the news of their mothers death over a telephone call in the middle of their jobs. The play creatively shows the foil of characters between the brothers as they hear the news. Kyle says, “Why do you humiliate me?” and Hamilton replies “Because you make it so easy.” These two lines show the great contrast between the two. Kyle is very nonchalant about their mother dying, wanting to use the funeral as a way to pass out his business cards. And Hamilton is deeply saddened by the passing of their mother. Hamilton handles the news in a different fashion than Kyle. This is where the arc of the play takes place. The characters do not develop throughout the story, rather the audience finds out more details about the differentiating characteristics of the two siblings through their conversations. Shay Dite did a phenomenal job creating the amazing set which showed half of each brother’s living room in their separate apartments. Both these rooms were overlooking the beautiful skyline of Toronto, Canada through large “windows” in the wall. The Toronto skyline backdrop was also lit up in a very creative manner to match either the mood of the scene or the time period. When it was night, it was a dark blue, when it was the evening, it glowed of a sunset orange. Both halves of the set representing the two apartments were designed to align with the characteristics of each brother. Annie Ann Tran, the props master is responsible for matching the props within the rooms such as the paintings on the wall to match the characters’ own personalities.

Welcome to the House of Crouse. To me the still shot of two teens, one wearing an Edward Bear t-shirt, hitchhiking on a two-lane highway is a powerfully nostalgic Canadian image. I grew up in 1970s era Nova Scotia where hundreds of kids (me included) hitchhiked on roads big and small. The image is iconic, a sentimental picture of a simpler time brought to vivid life in “Weirdos,” Bruce McDonald and Daniel MacIvor's sweet new coming of age story. So pull up a beanbag chair, pull on your tie dyed t-shirt and listen to Bruce and Daniel as they transport us back to the 1970s. C'mon in and sit a spell.

Random note: mixed up metaphors are […]
