Dave Chen is CEO at Equilibrium, a sustainability driven, real asset investor in the agriculture and food, and carbon transition infrastructure. He is responsible for strategy, executive leadership, and developing the firm's investment products and asset strategies. Dave is a preeminent thought leader in sustainable real asset investing, particularly in the realm of agriculture and food investments that achieve measurable impact investment results while realizing financial returns attractive to institutional investors.Prior to joining Equilibrium, Dave was General Partner at OVP Venture Partners, CEO/Co-Founder of GeoTrust (acquired by VeriSign in 2006); Founder of The Ascent Group; and served on the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank Board.Dave is an Adjunct Professor of Finance at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and taught sustainable finance and impact investing at Stanford Graduate School of Business from 2011 to 2013.In today's episode, Dave gives an overview of Equilibrium, provides insight into the genesis of Equilibrium's founding, discusses how value chain analysis is in their DNA and how he philosophically considers sustainability and sustainable investing as a competitive advantage. He speaks about how Equilibrium was focused on institutional investors from the beginning and how today they make up 90% of their clients. Dave describes Equilibrium's four main funds, including their Controlled Environment Foods Fund, and he speaks about what he calls ‘Distributed Abundance' where hi-tech, controlled environment agriculture disconnects climate from geography enabling the ultimate ‘Do-It-Yourself' and ‘Bring-Your-Own' climate anywhere on earth. We delve deeper into this concept of ‘Distributed Abundance' and the countries at the center of controlled environment technology, the potential for this technology to develop and move into other food categories in the future, and how we will see a complete ‘rethinking of agriculture' in the years to come.I really enjoyed this insightful discussion with Dave, and I hope you will too!Show notes: https://sri360.com/podcast/dave-chenAbout the SRI 360° Podcast: The SRI 360° Podcast is focused exclusively on sustainable & responsible investing. In this episode we sit down with our great friend Dave Chen (@dwc429), a migraine specialist at Mass General Hospital in Boston. We talk about his affinity for Provincetown, his experience navigating coming out during medical school, and how important your chosen family is - especially when you don't have the easiest coming out experience. Agriculture is faced with the critical challenge of reducing pesticide use, improving water efficiency, and building a food system that is resilient to climate change all while delivering nutritious affordable food for the masses. In this episode we dig in with Dave Chen to talk about how Equilibrium Capital is putting their $1B+ fund behind a tried and true technology to deliver on all fronts-- high-tech greenhouses. High-tech greenhouses are extremely common across Europe. Meticulous optimization at the plant level has enabled 10 - 40x productivity increases with a laundry list of sustainability and resilience benefits. But these glass and steel mega-producers have yet to come to the U.S. en mass. Equilibrium Capital is fueling a movement that will enable a new era of precision agriculture with sights set on solving some of the industry's most pressing issues. *** Equilibrium Capital

AMC already had a perfectly good Charlie Kaufman-esque property, but the network went with Dispatches From Elsewhere over Lodge 49 -- and while it's kind of Sarah's dream to fall into an alternate-reality scavenger hunt, first-time guest Dave Chen felt like the show would be more fun to "play" than to watch. Is it too twee? Too slow? Too divorced from the reality of non-celebrities? Or do the excellent cast and the In Search Of… graphics make it all worthwhile? Then we went Around The Dial with Love Is Blind, The Outsider, Teen Mom: Young and Pregnant, A French Village, and second-rate American TV in East Africa before Dave Cole declared transparent computer screens NOT the wave of the future. Dave Chen tried to give the Canon a bear hug by submitting the first-season finale of Succession for the Canon. On Becoming A God In Central Florida premiered on Showtime recently, and Floridian Jeb Lund returned to the podcast to discuss its geographic and period accuracy, whether it celebrates or mocks the poor, and all the process-y parts of a pyramid scheme (fine: "multi-level marketing"). We went Around The Dial with 13 Reasons Why, Why Women Kill and Pennyworth, and then we contemplated converting primetime shows into Saturday-morning cartoons, '70s-style, in an Extra Credit from Dave Snyder. After a hilarious (if fatal to felines) Canon submission on Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, we declared Netflix a winner, ABC a loser, and Dan Cassino an evil genius as we played a Hallmark Of Quality Game Time. John couldn't make it last week for our Veronica Mars discussion, but he fired a baby's laser-beam eyes at Amazon's latest original, The Boys, which we all quite liked. Does Jack Quaid look more like his famous parents, or like a Bill Heder/Pacey Witter hybrid? How will the show diverge even further from its graphic-novel parent in Season 2? And does Butcher swear more than Buntsy? We went Around The Dial with Sherman's Showcase and South Side, John's belated take on Veronica Mars S4, Animal Kingdom, and Pennyworth before descending into a boring, disturbing sex fog with Dave's presentation of TNG's "Sub Rosa" for the Nonac. Nickelodeon slime won the space race, Diddy became a Loser, and Dan Cassino merged shows old and new for a Before & After Game Time.
