It hasn't been easy for Sean Dickson. In fact, he doesn't even look like the Soup Dragons frontman you remember from early 90s hits like "I'm Free" and "Divine Thing". There's a good reason for that - almost nothing is the same. Since the Soup Dragons closed up shop in the late 90s, Sean came out, left music for many years, spent some time battling mental health, marrying his husband and finally becoming an in demand DJ named HiFi Sean and releasing a hit new album with vocalist David McAlmont recently called Happy Endings. Sean opens up more than he ever has before, especially when it comes to the endurance of "I'm Free" which he doesn't benefit from. It's a lot and, ultimately, a story of redemption. By the end, we're both in tears. Enjoy! www.facebook.com/hifisean www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
With David McAlmont's and Hifi Sean's album 'Happy Ending' just out, the time was ripe to interview one of the great vocalists of the current era. The track 'Yes' from David and Bernard Butler (then of Suede), became the anthem of the Britpop era, but David, who started out in the band Thieves, was never going to be reduced to such trite classification - his career has seen him develop and change, with his constant groundbreaking collaborations.- with David Arnold on 'Diamonds are Forever.'- with Michael Nyman on 'The Glare'.- and with Hifi Sean.David's story is one which is about the search for an identity, of feeling like an outsider and eventually having a sense of belonging. 'Happy Ending' from Hifi Sean and David McAlmont is released on Feb 3rd, 2023.And look out for the podcast with Hifi Sean. For all the latest on this podcast - connect with me on Instagram; steve.blameFor more on David McAlmont - check out his Instagram: david.mcalmontFor more on HiFi Sean check out his SoundCloud; https://soundcloud.com/hifi-seanAnd thanks to POP; The History Makers' insanely wonderful talent booker: #ArchieCMichaelSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/pop-the-history-makers-with-steve-blame/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Hosted on Acast. Whether with his first band Thieves – hugely underrated, I listen to those songs all the time – his Britpop era partnership with Suede exile Bernard Butler – the union of which produced arguably the finest pop song of the mid-1990s - his work with the great Dave Arnold or the English composer Michael Nyman, the voice of David McAlmont has been a fixture of my listening habits for almost three decades. Turns out that's not stopping anytime soon. These days David has paired up with one Sean Dickinson – aka HiFi Sean, aka Sean from baggy boys the Soup Dragons – for a new venture, the spoils of which can be heard on February 3rd, 2023, via Plastique Recordings. The record is called Happy Ending, and it's an eclectic collection of songs that are unmistakably of the modern age – angsty, twitchy, sad, sombre, maybe even a bit paranoid, confused, hopefully, looking for meaning and love. It's not even 2023 yet and I might have found my favourite record of next year already. And so on this episode I speak to David about that record, but also his work with all of the aforementioned, and get into the machinations of one of my lifetime's most unique talents. It's a good episode this and I'm so grateful to David for taking the time to speak to me. And while I have you, I wanted to let you know that the new episode of the ever excellent Trve. Cvlt. Pop! HiFi Sean (Sean Dickson) was the singer and main writer of The Soup Dragons, who charted in Europe in 1990 with 'I'm Free', an indie dance cover of the Rolling Stones hit. Later, in 1992, their track 'Divine Thing' was a top 40 hit on the Billboard chart in America. After their first album, 'This is Our Art', the band developed their sound in a more dance and less indie direction. Ten years after the band was founded in 1985, it disbanded. Sean Dickson came out as gay, an event that led to a breakdown, he formed The High Fidelity and. after DJ-ing already earlier in his life, became successful under the name HiFi Sean.Today, he continues to DJ, and make music. HiFi Sean's album Ft. includes tracks by Crystal Waters, Yoko Ono, Dave Ball, Billie Ray Martin (check out her podcast), and David McAlmont, with whom he has already recorded an album that will be released next year. His story is fascinating, and he's able to relate the events in his life with a healthy distance, as someone who is now a happily married gay man.If you like Hifi Sean why not check out these interviews:Billie Ray Martin, the Electronic Series which includes Wolfgang Flür & Martyn Ware, Man Parrish, Dave Dorrell.Connect with me on Instagram; steve.blameFor more on HiFi Sean check out his SoundCloud; https://soundcloud.com/hifi-sean And thanks to POP; The History Makers insanely wonderful talent booker: #ArchieCMichaelSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/pop-the-history-makers-with-steve-blame/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Hosted on Acast. ‘In our attempt to be accepted by mainstream media we've exchanged leather parties for quiche partiers and BBQs with neighbours.' As Three In A Bar hits it’s twenties now seemed like a good time to try out a spot of blind dating. Introduced to us by the fabulous Michelle Taylor-Cohen (see episode 8), this week’s guest is composer, arranger and lyricist Shane Cullinan.Shane chats about his ensemble Tonic Fold and some of their early gigs, including the first Nottingham Pride - entitled Pink Lace, a show following a naked man covered in ultraviolet baby teats and a vomiting flautist. Since then the gigs have got rather more glamorous and have led to collaborations with the likes of David McAlmont, Rachel Tucker and Kathy Burke. They discuss Shane’s critically acclaimed oratorio, The Pieta, a beautiful piece set in Manchester and depicting a mother’s devastation at the loss of her son to street crime. Shane talks about some of the techniques he employed in the process of writing and scoring this as well as writing the libretto.Seb and Verity ask Shane about working with Kathy Burke again, writing the music for her West End production of Lady Windermere’s Fan. Included in the score are fan breakbeats and funk bassoon...words you never thought you’d hear together.///Show notesTwitter: @musofunkInstagram: @shanecullinanmusicFacebook: Shane Cullinan MusicShane’s Website Click here to join the Members' Club on Patreon! This week, our librarian friend James Wilcox joins us for a Bond film that really had no right being as good as it was. I mean, they started shooting a Thanksgiving release in April and had no completed script at that time. The whole set seemed chaotic and frantic, yet somehow, Canadian director Roger Spottiswoode managed to piece together a pretty good Bond flick with only one real problem - THE DIALOGUE IS SO BAD. I mean, it’s a pun every 3 minutes or so with little to no meaningful interaction between characters, and it’s just laughable. And those puns - EDIFICE COMPLEX?!?! Still, we’re decently impressed by this movie, and it’s worth rewatching even if it’s one of the sillier entries in the franchise. The Staves surprise Richard in the show today, and Tobin is disappointed with today's cover shot. To cheer himself up, he bookends the show with St Paul & The Broken Bones. Why not subscribe to our show today? You can easily do this here. Track Listing I'm Torn Up St. Paul & The Broken Bones Facing West The Staves Sweet Home Alabama Rocking Free Yes McAlmont & Butler Resurrection Terence Trent D'Arby Rhythm & Blues Alibi Gomez Is It Me St. Paul & The Broken Bones Music from 4 decades peppers this show, including a brilliant cover of Sweet Home Alabama which seems to have passed Tobin by. Poor lad just doesn't like the song at all, although he could definitely admire the virtuosity of the guitar playing. At one point there are 4 guitars all going at the tune. Personally, I think this is as good as the original song. I was surprised by a track that wasn't planned in the pre-production notes of the show. It certainly is very different to the St Paul & The Broken Bones track that preceded it. Facing West by The Staves. However, it is quite delightful. Sweet vocal harmonies skip lightly over a subtle and tuneful acoustic backdrop. This is all brought together in their home of Nebraska … sorry, I meant Watford! It certainly belies its birth town and takes the listener on a musical adventure far from home. Because of their talent we'll showcase some more from The Staves in future episodes. The Transfiguration of Terence Trent D'Arby Terence Trent D'Arby enjoyed success as a boxer before finding fame as a musician, in fact winning the Florida Golden Gloves Lightweight Championship in 1980. He later turned down a place at a US Boxing School and joined the US Army. He was later ultimately formerly court-martialed and dishonourably discharged after going AWOL whilst serving in Germany. TTD then released his first studio album in 1987, Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby. He held a very high opinion of this recording, indeed citing it as the most important album since the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper. Terence Trent D'Arby changed his name in 1995 to Sananda Maitreya, which relates to a series of dreams he had in 1995. The name means ‘rebirth’ in Sanskrit, though he asserts it does not have any religious affiliations. Six years later he completed his full transfiguration by legally changing his name. After this Sananda Maitreya explained "Terence Trent D'Arby was dead ... he watched his suffering as he died a noble death. After intense pain, I meditated for a new spirit, a new will, a new identity." the most important album since the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper A conceptual masterpiece, superbly arranged and thrillingly executed McAlmont & Butler provided the track Yes for this episode and as Tobin eluded to, both David McAlmont and Bernard Butler have indeed tasted success in their own right. David McAlmont was one-half of the duo Thieves with Saul Freeman and Butler as the guitarist with indie rockers Suede. The British Hit Singles and Albums described Yes as "a conceptual masterpiece, superbly arranged and thrillingly executed". I also eloquently summarised Yes as "alright". In 2014 Butler organised a show at London's infamous Unity Chapel which sold out in minutes prompting him to quickly organise a second show just down the road at Islington's Assembly Hall which sold out equally as fast. What a shame I didn't manage to get tickets! In a future episode, we have an awesome cover by Butler. St Paul & The Broken Bones

Songwriter and performer David McAlmont joins Robin and Josie this week as he awaits the final results from his Art History degree, due that very afternoon. They talk of the great books of art as well as the work of John Baldwin, AA Milne, Truman Capote and, of course, Jean Rhys.
David McAlmont travels to San Francisco to tell the glittering and sad tale of gay black diva Sylvester James, famed for his disco hit Mighty Real. Sylvester's short life says much about US civil rights movements, the politics of the American music business and the devastating effects of Aids.

Kirsty Lang presents a special programme dedicated to one of Britain's most commercially successful composers, Michael Nyman, as he celebrates his 70th birthday. Perhaps best known for his film scores, including Jane Campion's The Piano, his minimalist music can also be enjoyed in the form of operas, string quartets, song cycles and now symphonies. Kirsty is joined by classical music critics, Fiona Maddocks and Jonathan Lennie, to discuss his music and legacy; woodwind player, Andy Findon, who's been a member of the Michael Nyman Band since the 1980s; singer David McAlmont, who wrote The Glare, a song cycle of news stories, with Nyman; and by the composer himself who talks about, among other things, The Hillsborough Symphony, soon to have its premiere, and how that came about. Presenter: Kirsty Lang Producer: Rebecca Armstrong.
