Democrats want to talk about Elon Musk. Whether voters want to hear that is another question — and one we may get an answer to very soon. In Wisconsin, an April 1 state supreme court race offers a test run of Dems' new Musk-centric campaign strategy. If it works, you can probably expect to see them use that Playbook in the 2026 campaign. If it doesn't? Well, then the party may just be as lost as ever. National politics editor David Siders joins Playbook deputy editor Zack Stanton to dig into it. Plus, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez head west on a “Fighting Oligarchy” tour.

With the Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries behind us, the 2024 election cycle is well underway.  Donald J. Trump isn't the 2024 Republican presidential candidate yet, but his victories in Iowa and New Hampshire suggest that it will be smooth sailing to the GOP nomination for the former president once again — notwithstanding his several impending criminal cases and tons of political baggage.  In this, the first of a series of conversations leading up to the 2024 presidential election, host Kai Wright asks conservative voters who are not aligned with Trump or the MAGA movement some key questions. What do anti-Trump conservatives care about? What space do they occupy in this political landscape? How do they make their voices heard? Kai also speaks with Theodore R. Johnson, senior advisor at New America focusing on race and Black electoral behavior, and a contributing columnist at the Washington Post; and with David Siders, politics editor at POLITICO who leads their reporting series “Road Trip,” which introduces readers to voters and local political players across the nation.   Tell us what you think. Is Trump 'damaged goods'? (11-10-2022--Hour1)

In a piece at POLITICO, David Siders says former President Donald Trump is damaged goods. Trump is still the dominant figure in the Republican Party, and he'll be the favorite to win the GOP nomination for president if, as expected, he runs again. But Trump's place in the party is far weaker after Tuesday. Truth is, if not for the former president's interventions, the night could have been a lot better for the GOP. Just look at how the most Trump-y candidates fared in states where more traditionalist Republicans were on the same ballot. In Georgia, Herschel Walker was locked in a neck-and-neck contest with Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock. Gov. Brian Kemp, whose resistance to overturning the 2020 results infuriated Trump, easily defeated his Democratic opponent, Stacey Abrams. In New Hampshire, Republican Don Bolduc lost to Sen. Maggie Hassan in a race that didn't even look close, while Gov. Chris Sununu, who once referred to Trump as “fucking crazy,” cruised to reelection. Trump's preferred candidate in Ohio, J.D. Vance, did better, beating Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan by a comfortable margin in that state's U.S. Senate race. But he came nowhere close to the margin that incumbent Gov. Mike DeWine, a more traditionalist Republican, put up. In Arizona, it was still early, with only about half of the expected vote in. But Kari Lake was running behind Katie Hobbs. Even if she comes back to win, it will be a closer race than political professionals of both parties had predicted had a more traditionalist Republican, Karrin Taylor Robson, made it through. Do you agree that Trump is damaged goods, and is weaker now than he was on Monday?      Get exclusive content here!: https://thepetekalinershow.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Control of Congress still hangs in the balance as Republicans are poised to take over the House, but we will have to wait until December for a runoff election to see who will take Georgia's Senate seat.  In the meantime, the red wave never really happened, and Democrats fared far better than most thought.  Former President Trump is in a weaker position coming into his big announcement and President Biden is taking any good news he can get.  David Siders, national political correspondent at Politico, joins us for midterm takeaways.   Next, marijuana was also on the ballot in 5 states.  Just ten years ago Washington and Colorado became the first states to legalize marijuana.  Now, Maryland and Missouri have been added to the list for a total of 21 states plus D.C.  As the stigma of cannabis use has worn off in many cases, it has also become big business projected to produce sales of $100 billion by 2030.  Mary Jane Gibson, contributor to Vox, joins us for the mixed night of results for marijuana on the ballot.   Finally, Meta has become the latest in a string of big tech companies to announce layoffs and hiring freezes.  The parent company of Facebook said they will be cutting 13% of its workforce, about 11,000 employees.  Revenue has been down for Meta as they face increased pressure from competitors like TikTok.  Meta will also start prioritizing content from viral creators over posts from friends and family.  Naomi Nix, tech reporter at The Washington Post, joins us for more.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Smarter Politics

In this episode we discuss the business of conducting polls in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic before reviewing some recent polls on President Trump’s handling of the crisis. We then discuss the government response at both the federal and state level, covering everything from the stimulus package being debated in Congress to local stay-at-home orders here in Colorado. Segment 1: To Poll or Not to Poll? In a typical election year, our political and government clients would be planning on fielding surveys to plan for November. This is not shaping up to be a typical election year. So what are the drawbacks to polling during the coronavirus pandemic? At what point is just regular old issue or campaign polling ok? Are there any actual benefits for the polling industry? Segment 2: A Review of Recent Polling A new round of recent polls show a bump for President Trump’s job approval, whether the question is general or specifically related to his response to COVID-19. Gallup shows a bump even among Democrats and Independents. In a Monmouth poll, 50% of respondents think the president is doing a good job, though that lags behind “your state’s governor” at 72% and health agencies in the federal government at 65%. Still, the truth is that it’s probably too soon to make any judgments about how the crisis will affect the President’s reelection chances. Boston College political scientist David A. Hopkins has a good blog post explaining why. Segment 3: Stimulus Package The Senate has finally passed a $2 trillion stimulus package to deal with the crisis. Vox has a breakdown of what’s included in the package. It includes a $500 billion loan program for businesses, increased unemployment insurance, $150 billion into the health care system, $150 billion to state and local governments, direct payments of $1,200 per adult and $500 per child for households making below $75,000 (individual) or $150,000 (couple), and another $367 billion for small business loans. The package will now be voted on by the House on Friday morning, though already at least one Republican is threatening to hold up the vote. What do you make of the politics of the stimulus package? Conservatives are attacking Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats for playing politics during the crisis, holding up the stimulus package and attempting to jam in a Democratic wish list while Democrats criticized Republicans for proposing less money for poor households and holding up the bill over unemployment insurance. Segment 4: Political Storylines Now let’s look at a few other political storylines stemming from the crisis. One argument that Democrats are advancing is that President Trump was slow to grasp the severity of the crisis, and in doing so misled the American people and heightened the risk. That’s the case being made by Priorities USA Action, one of the main Democratic super PACs, in a new ad running in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Florida. Will this argument be effective come November? President Trump and other Republicans are also starting to pivot toward advocating a quicker return to normalcy, with Trump saying on Tuesday that he would “love to have the country opened up and just raring to go by Easter.” This is in line with an emerging argument from Republicans that continued damage to the economy will be worse than deaths from the coronavirus, with Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick going so far as to say that he would be willing to risk his health for the good of the country’s economic future. Because this line of thinking is directly in contrast to the advice of public health experts, it will likely only add fuel to the fire of Democratic attacks like the Priorities USA ad. However effective these partisan attacks end up being in this November’s elections, COVID-19 may fundamentally alter our politics for years to come. David Siders explains the shift in Politico. To sum it up, the era of big government may be back for good. Is that case? Segment 5: The Colorado Response Let’s end by discussing the response close to home here in Colorado. Governor Polis had resisted pressure to issue a statewide shelter-in-place or stay-at-home order, in keeping with his preference for local control over statewide mandates. This had earned the governor praise from across the political spectrum. However, as more and more local government issued stay-at-home orders, the Governor finally issued the statewide order this morning. Who’s right? What is the appropriate response?

Carl Takei, senior staff attorney at the ALCU, joins us to discuss why no charges were filed and if there is any other disciplinary action yet to come for Pantaleo. Next, as Operation Varsity Blues works its way through the courts with parents and coaches who were charged in the college admissions cheating scandal we take a look at how USC is investigating the students who have been connected to the scandal.  33 students are under investigation to see what they knew or if they lied on their applications.  Joel Rubin, reporter for the LA Times, joins us for a look inside the admissions investigation. Finally, a cash shortage may soon be squeezing the huge Democratic field of presidential candidates.  Nearly half of the candidates spent more campaign cash than they raised in the second quarter of the year.  Early money is more important than ever because candidates are forced to spend heavily to meet polling and donor thresholds to qualify for debates.  David Siders, reporter for Politico, joins us for who is in danger. As John De Lancie's character Q said to Patrick Stewart's character Jean-Luc Picard in the similarly named series finale of Star Trek: The Next Generation, all good things must come to an end. Today, we bring you the final episode of Podcast Stockton.I registered the domain name and built the first version of the website on January 3, 2009. A month later, Stockton was named the most miserable city in America. The first episode of Podcast Stockton, episode zero, was released on March 22, 2009. My goal was simple: to share the stories about the good life in Stockton. With the help of so many wonderful people, we accomplished that.I am so proud of what Podcast Stockton became. What started as a one-man operation grew to include many others. Podcast Stockton would not have been possible without the help from Rod Villagomez for coming on the show as co-host back in late 2009; Wes Rhea from the Stockton Convention & Visitors Bureau for all of his wonderful support on the show, Jon Remington from Closet Goodies for giving us our first regular "commercial"; Greg Bahr and Andy Pinasco for being great confidants and helping to introduce us to so many special people in Stockton; Omar Vargas for creating the awesome Podcast Stockton logo and artwork; Tom Mondragon for his years of friendship and for being the inspiration for the show; Wes Johnson for building our iPhone app; Lowell Tuckerman for doing the sports segment; Mr. Story for all of his trusted advice; Manuel for all the help with content ideas, technical support and guidance, and Gabriel for his support, content, show ideas, and giving us our very first review.Meeting Rod and having him join the show was exactly what I needed. His experience and ideas were a welcome shot in the arm and with his guidance, we did so much more than I could have ever done by myself. When Rod wasn't available, it was an honor to co-host the show with Manny, Chris the Greek, Lowell and Gabriel.
