In this episode of his "Thinking Out Loud" series, Double D discusses the failure of Democrats to act on abortion rights for decades, while examining their collaboration with forced-birther Democrats and Republicans.Double D opens the video by relaying tweets outlining how long its been since Democrats had the power to codify Roe as well as other abortion rights legislation. He shows a tweet from Joe Biden during his 2020 Presidential bid where he promised to codify Roe V. Wade, contrasting it with his quote from 2006, where he refers to abortion as being a tragedy, not a choice, or a right.Diving in, Double D shows how democrats have colluded with anti-choice democrats, as well as forced-birther Republicans. Starting first with Joe Biden's $200,000 paid to speech for Fred Upton, a Republican lawmaker in Michigan with a history of pushing for anti-choice legislation. Double D uses this example to examine the system of "I scratch your back, you scratch mine", which politicians across the aisle engage in, as well as the outright system of graft masquerading as "paid speeches" which know no partisan boundaries.Moving on, Double D reads two articles from The Texas Tribune, which shows House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as well as House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, stumping for Congressman Henry Cuellar, a centrist, anti-choice democrat from Laredo, Texas. With Pelosi making comments such as "I support my incumbents, from right, to left." Double D shows how Cuellar had been primaried in 2020 by progressive pro-choice candidate Jessica Cisneros, whom he narrowly defeated. Double D goes on to explain that the democratic establishment will do everything in their power, including supporting anti-choice democrats or even forced-birther Republicans in their attempts to stifle progressive dissent within the Party. He shows also how Democrats have been bankrolling ads for far-right Trump republicans throughout the country.Double D examines a Washington Post article from 2017, where Pelosi insists that "democrats should not have to toe the line on abortion", then showing her recent mass email condemning the SCOTUS overturning Roe, while asking for donations to ensure Democrats can continue fighting for abortion rights.Next, Double D examines Joe Biden's failure to run a proper hearing against Clarence Thomas' nomination to the SCOTUS, highlighting his failure to bring to the stand several witnesses which would have corroborated Anita Hill's allegations of sexual assault by Thomas. Double D describes this as an example of political theater, of which the Democrats are masters; where they put on a grand show of "putting up a fight" when in reality they are acting behind the scenes to ensure nothing material comes from the political drama.Double D then takes a look at Hillary Clinton's choice for a 2016 running mate, Tim Kaine, a known anti-choice Senator who had advocated for the Hyde-Amendment, an act which bars federal funds being used to finance abortions. Double D shows how this is a case of political pandering which allows politicians to preserve  the status quo while catering to different electorate. By supporting the "core ruling" of Roe, but supporting the Hyde Amendment which denies abortion access to the most economically disparate women, Kaine has de-facto forced women to carry unwanted pregnancies to term.

Believe it or not, Daily Kos is turning 20! We're celebrating this major milestone with a Downballot retrospective, looking back at some of our favorite races over the years with longtime contributing editor James Lambert. We start with a classic 2005 special election in a dark red district in Ohio, featuring "Fighting" Dem Paul Hackett versus Republican "Mean Jean" Schmidt, that foretold the 2006 blue wave. Then we dive deep into the absolutely gonzo 2008 House race on Staten Island that began when an entrenched Republican suddenly revealed he had a secret second family in Virginia—and only got much, much stranger from there. Co-hosts David Nir and David Beard also recap Tuesday's primaries, including the battle between Henry Cuellar and Jessica Cisneros that's now gone into overtime; the lousy night Trump-backed candidates had across the board; and another incumbent-vs.-incumbent battle in Georgia where the more progressive congresswoman won despite representing a much smaller portion of her new district. Tuesday night's primaries brought some major news:  Former President Donald Trump suffered embarrassing defeats in Georgia (A must-read from Alex Isenstadt: “‘We're going to go f---ing scorched-earth': How Brian Kemp crushed Trump in Georgia”) … Rep. Mo Brooks mounted a successful comeback and is now headed to the Alabama Senate runoff despite losing Trump's endorsement … And Rep. Henry Cuellar's narrow lead over Jessica Cisneros means she could request a recount in the Democrats' most-watched House primary, though Cuellar declared victory Tuesday night. … Five key takeaways from Tuesday night, by David Siders, Adam Wren and Ally Mutnick And will this time be any different? At least 19 elementary school-aged children and two adults are dead at the hands of an 18-year-old gunman in Texas. And once again, the nation is mourning the loss of precious lives. But in Washington, there is a serious question of not just whether lawmakers will do anything about gun safety following the latest mass shooting — but whether they will even try. The school shooting at Uvalde has left behind unbelievable grief and shock across Texas. Some families of victims were made to wait hours before being told of their child's condition. President Biden is calling for new gun control action, while Texas Republicans are calling for more Texans to be armed and trained, as several prominent GOP leaders plan to appear at the NRA's annual convention in Houston this weekend - historically, mass shootings have resulted in a fewer gun restrictions in Texas, not more. Austinites are urged to not only make a blood donation, but to become a new regular blood donor - and to be sure to confirm the legitimacy of any online crowdfunding effort before giving. The November ballot is now set following yesterday's runoff election: incumbent Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton will face Democratic challenger Rochelle Garza, incumbent Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick gets a rematch with Democrat Mike Collier, and incumbent State Comptroller Glenn Hegar will be challenged by Democrat Janet Dudding. For Texas Land Commissioner, Republican Dawn Buckingham will face Democrat Jay Kleberg. Incumbent Railroad Commissioner Wayne Christian survived his runoff and will be challenged by Democrat Luke Warford. The two were desk mates when they served together in the Texas House of Representatives in the late 1980s.Cuellar also appeared on the show via Zoom. Another guest of veteran broadcaster Ron Whitlock's was Tony Knopp, political science professor emeritus at UT-Rio Grande Valley.Cuellar is up for election today in the Democratic Party runoff election for Congressional District 28. His opponent is Laredo attorney Jessica Cisneros. Whitlock said he had reached out to the Cisneros camp for a response to the Lucio endorsement of Cuellar.Kicking off the show, Whitlock explained he has endorsed Cuellar in previous elections and was doing so again. He said Cuellar was largely responsible for bringing in $17 million to dredge the ship channel at Port Mansfield, which is in Lucio's district but not Cuellar's. Whitlock said that initial investment will likely generate $250 million in infrastructure projects because the port will now be able to handle barge traffic. “Amazing” was the word Whitlock used to describe the fact that Cuellar secured the federal funding for Port Mansfield in just five weeks. Noting that Port Mansfield is located in the poorest county in Texas, Willacy, Whitlock said the investment would be “transformational.”Editor's Note: The read the full story go to the Rio Grande Guardian website.

You're not having deja vu - it IS, indeed, time to VOTE once again. Why do we have so darn many elections this year? That's part of our discussion today, along with an analysis of the offices and issues in question. A quick guide to our major endorsements: Lieutenant Governor (index to 13:32): Mike Collier (whom we talked to recently in our April 9 minisode) Attorney General (16:38): Rochelle Garza (our guest for our February 10th minisode) Land Commissioner (20:00): Jay Kleberg (listen to Episode 54, from April 22) State Comptroller (24:05): Janet Dudding (a proud proponent of marijuana legalization!) U.S. House - Texas District 28 (28.33): Jessica Cisneros (over highly problematic longtime incumbent Henry Cuellar, whose very presence in a runoff speaks volumes) Texas Senate - District 27 (33:26): Sara Stapleton Barrera (to replace outgoing, and also highly problematic incumbent Eddie Lucio Jr.) Early voting is on NOW through May 20, and Election Day is Tuesday May 24. Any details you need about voting are easily found at GoVoteTexas.org. There ARE NO MINOR ELECTIONS - see you at the polls. Also - if you'll be in the Austin area on Saturday May 14, we'd appreciate your presence at the Texas State Capitol for our Bans Off Our Bodies rally in support of Roe v Wade and abortion rights, with our own Diana Gomez as co-emcee! The event starts at 11am.

Today's show focuses primarily on how Democrats used Abortion as a fundraising ploy but never cared to pass a law protecting it. Plus Ukraine, and the recent attack on Dave Chapelle. The Democrats had decades to pass a law making abortion legal. They didn't. Now Nancy Pelosi says she wants to pass that law, but at the same time supports anti abortion Democrats like Congressman Henry Cuellar. New evidence has emerged showing Joe Biden could have done more to stop Putin's invasion of Ukraine. Dave Chapelle was attacked by a homeless lunatic. Why was Chapelle's security team allowed to break the guy's arm and then stomp him in the face? Topics: Dave Chappelle physically attacked on stage; Federal Reserve raises interest rates; Stock Market tanks; Progressive Champion Nina Turner loses big in Ohio primary; Does Putin have cancer?; Is America helping Ukraine kill all those Russian generals?; Nancy Pelosi says she wants legislation that enshrines a woman's right to choose, so why is she endorsing Pro Life Congressman Henry Cuellar instead of Jessica Cisneros? Emma hosts Kim Kelly, labor reporter and columnist at Teen Vogue, to discuss her recent book Fight Like Hell: The Untold History of American Labor. Then Emma is joined by Jessica Cisneros, candidate for Congress in Texas's 28th Congressional District, to give us an update from the campaign trail. Kim Kelly begins by just situating the current state of the labor movement, particularly coming off of her reporting from Bessemer, Alabama, and reflecting on the differences between that Amazon unionization effort and the success we've seen in Staten Island recently, before she and Emma get into the importance of looking to labor history for lessons from past organizers and past victories. Next, they get into the mythological image of the American union worker, the older white guy with grease on him, and the electoral fetishization of appealing to him, contrasting this figure with the incredibly diverse makeup of a working class. Kelly then looks to her own connection to organizing, first reflecting on her parent's union membership and then getting into her first experience unionizing the Vice office back in the early 2010s, becoming only the second digital media union, and seeing firsthand how unions can achieve incredible things for their workers, from accessible and gender-affirming care to reasonable wages and myriad other material changes. She and Emma then jump back to 1824 discussing the first factory strike in US history, by young women in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, as a first example of how unionization is both not a white male activity, and is incredibly effective at lifting those who are viewed as easily exploitable into positions of leverage and safety, looking to more contemporary examples of Flight Attendants as well, before looking to how executives use different racial and cultural groups to divide workers. Moving to the turn of the century, they first discuss the mass strikes of washerwomen in Atlanta during the 1881 Cotton Exposition as they get into a discussion on the segregation of the labor movement, looking also to the brotherhood of sleeping car porters (the first AFL-recognized Black union), and the Philly local aid chapter of the IWW (the first nationally recognized interracial union), before they shift slightly to the large-scale women's organizing movement like the uprising of the 20,000 in NYC, discussing the paths they inspired including the impact of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory pushing one of the biggest engineers, Frances Perkins, of social security and the New Deal deeper into the realm of organizing. Moving to the West Coast, Kim and Emma discuss how the 1940s saw sugar cane plantations in Hawaii continuously shift between targeted immigrant communities, dropping one and looking to another as each organized themselves (before working together), and dive into the “Ya Basta!” movement for janitors in CA, before wrapping up by touching on the current state of the NLRB and the inspiration we can find in (certain places of) the Biden Administration. Emma also chats with Jessica Cisneros on fighting for workers and a progressive agenda when up against an anti-choice Democrat in Texas. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt and Brandon as they dive into Jordan Peterson's most recent tear-shedding event, Matt explores the tension at Peterson's speech at a bitcoin conference, and they discuss Starbucks pivoting to what workers really want (NFTs for mid-level management… and also lower pay for union workers). Karoline Leavitt goes on Newsmax to discuss the feminine urge to invest in local politics, Ben from Staten Island calls in on the future of reproductive rights, and the crew watches JJ Redick absolutely roast the Mad Dog on First Take. They also touch on the Madison Cawthorn leaks, plus, your calls and IMs! There were also some key races that will now head to runoffs. Incumbent Attorney General Ken Paxton faces a runoff for the Republican nomination against Land Commissioner George P. Bush. Embarrassing media coverage, Progressives on the move in Texas, Biden good but should be bolder. Biden calls out Republicans for the $2T tax cut for the 1% as his Rescue Plan created 7.5M jobs #SOTU: President Biden used his State of the Union Address to call out Republicans for tax cuts for the 1% as his rescue plan helped every American. Progressives Applaud as Casar Wins Big, Cisneros Forces Runoff With Cuellar: “Together, we're taking our fight to the halls of Congress—to fight and deliver on passing Medicare for All, protecting reproductive rights, creating good jobs, and fixing our power grid,” said Greg Casar. Former Austin City Council member Greg Casar handily won the Democratic primary for an open seat in Texas' 35th Congressional District on Tuesday while progressive immigration attorney Jessica Cisneros forced Rep. Henry Cuellar—a corporate-funded Democrat under FBI investigation—into a runoff contest in the state's 28th district. Casar, a democratic socialist endorsed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), had over 61% of the vote after results were tallied in more than 95% of precincts in the 35th district, which stretches from East Austin into San Antonio. The district is a Democratic stronghold, meaning Casar's primary victory likely secures him a seat in Congress. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/politicsdoneright/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/politicsdoneright/support

On Monday, Russian forces made progress in their efforts to encircle Ukraine's capital Kyiv despite being slowed down by continued resistance from Ukrainian forces. Russia and Ukraine also sent delegations to southeastern Belarus for initial talks amid hopes that the two countries could come to some kind of agreement, but did not come to a resolution. Today, Texas holds the very first primary of the midterms. The elections will tell us a little bit about how strong of a hold former President Trump has on the GOP, and show us if the state is ready to elect more progressive candidates. Jessica Cisneros, a progressive-backed candidate who's running for Texas's 28th Congressional District, joins us to discuss how she's feeling about her race. And in headlines: A new study shows that Pfizer-BioNTech shots offer barely any protection from infection in kids 5 to 11 years old, a new climate change report found that countries are not doing enough to combat global warming, and jury selection began in the first criminal trial related to the January 6th insurrection. RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas - Rio Grande Guardian editor Steve Taylor recently met up with educator, organizer and activist Tannya Benavides from Laredo. A leader in Laredo's No Border Wall Coalition, Benavides is running in the Democratic Party primary for Congressional District 28. .She is a graduate of Texas State University and Johns Hopkins University.Taylor wanted to meet up with Benavides after she was denied the opportunity to explain her campaign at a planned candidate forum that was to be hosted by  RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Taylor was due to moderate the forum, which was scheduled to be held at South Texas College's Rio Grande City campus. Benavides confirmed her attendance at the forum but her opponents in the CD 28 primary, U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar and Jessica Cisneros signaled they would not attend. Reluctantly, RGVHCC President Cynthia Sakulenzki had to cancel the forum because the group has a policy of not holding such forums when only one candidate is available. To compensate for the fact that no CD 28 candidate forum was to be held in the Rio Grande Valley this primary season, Taylor scheduled a Meet the Candidate podcast with Benavides.Benavides said the goal of her campaign was to uplift all the voices in CD 28. She said that, if elected, she would represent all residents in the district. “For far too long, South Texans have been sidelined in the political process by representatives who do not understand the everyday experiences of working-class families or share their community's interests,” Benavides said.Benavides said her platform includes Medicare For All, advancing Green New Deal legislation, immigration reform, worker's rights, investment in infrastructure, protections for seasonal migrant workers, educational justice, women's rights, and LGBTQ+ rights.

Emma hosts journalist Travis Lupick to discuss his recent book Light Up the Night: America's Overdose Crisis and the Drug Users Fighting for Survival. Then, Emma is joined by Jessica Cisneros, candidate for Congress in Texas's 28th District, to give an update from the campaign trail!Travis and Emma begin by situating his story in this week's news regarding the success of and backlash to Biden's safe smoking kit, including the fact that the existence of clean pipes and needles does not create more demand for opioids, no matter how much that idea supports conservatives' desire to avoid slight discomfort. Travis dives into his work, which started in Vancouver in the wake of the incredible success of North America's first needle exchange, and how this represented the importance of taking on the opioid crisis as a public health issue, not a criminal one, before he and Emma work to define the concept of “harm reduction” and the importance of building a system of trust in community health practices, especially when it comes to encouraging future treatment. Next, they look to the Nixon Administration as they dive into the birth of the war on drugs, and John Ehrlichman famously saying the quiet part out loud in pinning their criminalization of heroin and marijuana on an attempt to imprison Black and brown people and hinder the anti-war movements of the era. They wrap up the interview by looking at the current stage of the opioid crisis, moving from one of prescription pills to heroin and now to fentanyl, and this concept of how the “iron law of prohibition,” means the criminalization of illicit substances ultimately pushes for more potent and transportable drugs, rather than putting a stop to their supply, before looking to what legislators and policymakers can and should do moving forwards. Emma also touches on the anti-semitism and anti-worker ideology behind the US-backed Canadian tucker convoy. And in the Fun Half: Jessica Cisneros comes on to discuss her candidacy for TX-28 in the wake of Henry Cuellar being raided by the FBI, and the progressive agenda she wants to push as San Antonio becomes bluer and bluer, then Chris Leal for HD-114 hops on to explore how he's riding his union backing in the hopes of winning the first Democratic seat in a statewide Texas election in decades. Emma is also joined by Brandon and Matt Binder as they take on Dave Chappelle leveraging his investments against affordable housing in his town, the absurdity of recent crypto corruption, and Jason Myles from “This is Revolution” calls in to explore the problems of our guest's representation of drug abuse, and the importance of recognizing the inherent ugliness of the problem and avoiding the need to paint a picture of a “beautiful” victim, plus, your calls and IMs! In this episode, we got to have a conversation with Jessica Cisneros, the Executive Director of Safe Embrace. Jessica initially started working with survivors and their children in the child welfare system in Clark County in 2006. She started as a case manager for a non-profit and eventually was promoted to supervisor and then to a program director. After moving back to Reno, she worked for NCJFC as a Site Manager working with courts across the nation on best practices and the intersection between child welfare and domestic violence. She joined the Safe Embrace team in December 2017 as the Program Director and was promoted to Executive Director in June 2019. Safe Embrace is a non-profit committed to ending the cycle of domestic and sexual violence in our community. We offer a wide variety of prevention and intervention services that are survivor centered and trauma informed. Some of the largest successes include expansion of our co-ed safe house to 32 beds, incorporating a housing first and rule reduction model in all residential programs and expanding our outreach and prevention education programming. Information regarding our programs and volunteer opportunities can be found on our website at www.safeembrace.org or you can call our 24 hour hotline at 775-322-3466.
