Today's Headlines: Kash Patel is having a rough week — Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee sent him an alcohol screening questionnaire asking how many drinks he has per day and how often he can't remember the night before.. On the Iran front, the "ceasefire" is doing ceasefire things: Iran seized two more ships and fired on three others, though the White House says it doesn't count because they weren't American or Israeli ships — so apparently it's only a war if we say so. Believe it or not, a War Powers resolution failed for the fifth time, with the Senate voting 51-46 to reject. The Secretary of the Navy was also ousted — not a huge loss given he was a campaign donor with no military experience who appeared on Epstein's flight logs — but perhaps not ideal timing during an active naval conflict. Elsewhere in chaos, Georgia Rep. David Scott passed away at 80, making him the fifth member of Congress to die in the past year and a half, tipping the House balance further toward Republicans; a Republican-appointed judge voided Virginia's newly approved redistricting map the day after voters approved it; Truth Social replaced CEO Devin Nunes — who was paid $47 million while the company earned $4 million — with someone described as a "corporate babysitter"; and condom prices are going up 30% because of the Iran war, which is somehow both funny and bleak. Climate scientists are warning that the Atlantic Ocean's key current system is closer to collapse than previously thought, and a UN report found that climate change is driving surges in gender-based violence globally. In tech and surveillance news, unauthorized users on a private Discord server guessed their way into Anthropic's restricted Mythos model; Madison Square Garden owner James Dolan is apparently running a full surveillance operation on fans, employees, and former players; Palantir's CEO dropped a 22-point manifesto about AI weapons and Silicon Valley's "moral debt"; and Sam Altman's eyeball-scanning startup falsely claimed a partnership with Bruno Mars, which Bruno Mars and Live Nation immediately denied. On the day President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to announce he's replacing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem following controversy over a costly DHS advertising campaign, Ron revisits one of the final "dress downs" Noem got - at hand of Georgia Rep. Lucy McBath. The detention of Atlanta-based quadriplegic barber Rodney Taylor drew McBath's ire, and rightfully so. Ron caught up with comedian Steve Hofstetter ahead of his show at Helium Comedy Club in Alpharetta. Together they discussed Steve's viral video criticizing a Kansas law targeting transgender driver's licenses, how politics influences his comedy, and what it's like hitting the road again just weeks after becoming a father. Back on news of the day, an aspirational Republican state legislator is trying hard to push a year-old bill to inflict punitive damage on cities and counties that don't handle homeless ness in their midst to the satisfaction of property owners. of course it does nothing to actually solve homelessness and actually makes that task more difficult by stripping financial resources. Democratic lawmakers lined up to say just that. Lastly, the Texas Senate primary race may be over, but the after-effects could be something for Democrats to have to overcome in order to win that seat in November. So what cost Rep. Jasmine Crockett - racism & misogyny or self-inflicted wounds?Tune in to catch the Ron Show weekdays from 4-6pm Eastern time on Georgia NOW! Keisha Lance Bottoms joined Ron for a look back at her mayoral era in Atlanta and to make her sales pitch to skeptical Georgia voters ahead of the gubernatorial election in November.Speaking on the race, a curious endorsement bubbled up, last week, drawing notable scrutiny among many black Georgia voters. Trump got whacked by the Supreme Court Friday, but justices may have actually been trying to bail out his floundering economy. Is the president too narcissistic to take the win? If so, more economic malaise is likely to come.California Governor Gavin Newsom was in Atlanta over the weekend, for a Bottoms' fundraiser and a conversation with Mayor Andre Dickens on his book tour; a "960 SAT score" statement was fodder for criticism by some on the right, but didn't seem to phase those in attendance - or anyone who heard the entire exchange. Georgia Rep. Marvin Lim capped the cast to share his own immigrant voter struggles . He and fellow Democrats are floating legislation to allow Georgia municipalities to embrace sanctuary policies. Lim also spoke on the work he does representing a diverse district, along with penning bipartisan legislation to protect medically challenged utility customers burdened with shutoffs.Tune in to catch the Ron Show weekdays from 4-6pm Eastern time on Georgia NOW! (The Center Square) – Former U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's congressional seat will be empty at least two months, likely three, as a special election already drawing 24 candidates will not take place until March 10. If a runoff is needed, April 7 would be the earliest the seat could be decided, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said Tuesday. Georgia law requires winning candidates to receive 50% of the vote plus one. The timing is pivotal for many reasons, including potential government shutdowns. Republicans have a 218-213 advantage with four vacancies in the U.S. House of Representatives, the trend has been four to five continuing resolutions per year. But there's a problem: The Taliban controls how the money is spent. So their allies get lots of help while everyone else gets the shaft.Next, they react to the Republican-controlled Indiana State Senate rejecting a new congressional map that might have given the GOP a chance to win all nine House seats in the Hoosier state. Finally, they shake their heads as Georgia Rep. Join Jim and Greg for the Wednesday 3 Martini Lunch as they vent over Senate Republicans being far too generous in extending Obamacare subsidies, Georgia Rep. Hank Johnson calling America the “Great Satan,” and the mainstream media suddenly embracing Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene now that she's feuding with President Trump.First, they shake their heads as Senate Republicans propose extending the “emergency” COVID-era Obamacare subsidies for adults making up to seven times the federal poverty level. The GOP plan does change how the subsidies are delivered and it's better than the Democrats' plan. But should there be a plan at all for an emergency that ended years ago?Next, they unload on Rep. Hank Johnson. Formerly just comic relief in Congress for asking things like whether a greater U.S. military presence on Guam would make the island tip over, Johnson is now openly calling the U.S. "the Great Satan," echoing terrorist groups and their benefactors in Iran. Finally, they marvel at the sudden mainstream media fascination with Marjorie Taylor Greene. The last two weeks have highlighted fractures within both the Republican and Democratic parties. The fight over releasing the Epstein files has shaken the GOP, causing some of President Donald Trump's staunchest allies – like Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene – to call him out. And recent incidents of antisemitism within the MAGA movement have prompted infighting about how (and whether) to root it out.Despite that, the party in the country's crosshairs is on the left. The longest government shutdown in American history ended last week after 43 days. And it ended with eight senators breaking with the Democratic caucus to pass a spending bill – without securing the health insurance provisions they had demanded. Many Democrats across the country — from Washington strategists to local activists — called the move a surrender. They say the defectors gave up a winning hand right when public opinion was on their side. The loudest criticism came from younger Democrats who called for new party leadership. In this latest installment of “If You Can Keep It,” our weekly series on the state of democracy, we look at the fractures the shutdown exposed on the left and how a new generation of lawmakers thinks the party should govern in the years ahead.Find more of our programs online. Friend of the show Jay Bookman penned a piece chonicling how unpopular taxpayer funded private school vouchers are with conservatives and liberals - red and blue states. He also deftly explained what's happening in Georgia as a program set to aid maybe 6% of the state's student population attend a private school - with 1% of its education budget - suddenly appears to be available to nearly 20% of the state's students - at a much higher taxpayer cost - due to an interpretation by an unelected board tasked with managing the voucher program. Also, the disparate storytelling from Fox-owned WAGA-TV and Cox Media's WSB-TV. My goodness. Leigh McGowan, aka "Politics Girl" called for a Democratic Party "reboot" in one of her latest social media "rants" (her word; not mine) and I'm in near-total agreement with everything she said. Also, is Senator Chris Murphy prepping for a Presidential run? Sure seems like it. He ripped Georgia Rep. Barry Loudermilk's interim January 6th report recommending a criminal investigation into former Rep. Liz Cheney and has honed his anti-Trump/Musk messaging effectively, too. Just putting a pin in this for 2028.

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Dave Weigel, politics writer at Semafor, author of the "Americana" newsletter just one day out from the 2024 election. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on final-day swing state polling, the lingering impact of Trump's fascist rally at MSG, the electoral drag of Harris' support for genocide, RFK's fluoride attack, Israel's banning of UNRWA and enforced starvation in Gaza, and the NYT Tech Guild strike, before touching on Trump's ongoing deterioration and Mike Johnson's wild slip-up over the CHIPs Act. Dave Weigel then joins, diving right into the major Selzer poll out of Iowa, what it shows us regarding Harris' overwhelming support from women, and what this poll (and others) can tell us about the success of Harris' voter outreach across swing states. Weigel, Sam, and Emma also parse through the numbers behind early voting, why Democrats aren't particularly pressed about them, and the evolving constituency of independent voters, before touching on the GOP's GOTV fiasco – led by Elon Musk and Charlie Kirk. After briefly reflecting on the lingering impact of Trump's Bund rally at MSG, they get into a preview of the Senate fight, what the best/worst case scenarios are for Dems and Republicans across the Presidency, House, and Senate, and what particular races might act as bellwethers for the greater election. Sam also highlights a John Oliver segment on Georgia Rep. Ruwa Romman's comments on voting for Harris. And in the Fun Half: Emma talks with Greg from Massachusetts about down-ballot voting and the secret men for Harris vote, dives deep into the context for and meaning behind Selzer's Iowa poll (with some added commentary from Trump and, later on, Jeff from Iowa), and Tim from Chicago asks about the election night timeline. Tucker reflects on wrestling with his demons (and losing), RFK Jr. sets his sights on fluoride, and Steve Doocy can't quite put his finger on why women don't like Trump, plus, your calls and IMs! SGT BETSY BRANTNER SMITH JOINS DAWN LIVE! BETSY EXPANDS ON THE STATE OF PHILADELPHIA LEADERSHIP AS NEW MAYOR CHERELLE PARKER SETS A POLICE PRESENCE IN INFAMOUS KENSINGTON DISTRICT... HOW CAN KEVIN BETHEL AND PARKER FIND A WAY TO ENFORCE LAW & ORDER... BETSY ALSO EXPANDS ON THE RECENT TREND OF "SWATTING" AND FINDING A WAY TO COMBAT THIS PROBLEM THAT WASTES TIME, EFFORT, AND RESOURCES FROM MANY POLICE DEPTS NATIONWIDE...  According to Morning Brew, incidents of swatting involving politicians and judges are on the rise across the U.S.On Sunday, swatters targeted Tanya Chutkan, the federal judge presiding over the case concerning Donald Trump's alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election, claiming there was a shooting at her house (there wasn't). And she's just the latest in a recent wave of swatting—a form of harassment that involves calling the police under false pretenses to send a SWAT team to someone's home. Federal lawmakers including Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, New York Rep. Brandon Williams, and Florida Sen. Rick Scott have been swatted recently.Jack Smith, the special counsel who's prosecuting former President Trump in two cases, was swatted on Christmas Day.A 911 caller pretended to have broken into the home of Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows the day after she disqualified Trump from being on the state's primary ballot...The fake calls often claim a bomb threat, murder, or burglary, creating a dangerous situation as law enforcement arrives prepared to deal with potentially armed criminals... What's being done about it: Multiple politicians have called for legislation that would make it easier to identify those responsible for swatting and levy stronger penalties. For now, no arrests have been made in connection with these crimes as the callers almost always use fake caller ID or phone spoofing software to remain untraceable. For perspective on what can be done to stop this, turn to a 29-year law enforcement veteran who now trains officers around the world. Sgt. Betsy Brantner Smith (Ret.) is spokesperson for National Police Association, a non profit that supports law enforcement officers across the U.S. She began her career as a police dispatcher at age 17 and has held positions in patrol, investigations, narcotics, juvenile, hostage negotiation, crime prevention, K-9 and field training. She has been a law enforcement trainer for over 20 years.  Tune in 10 AM - 12 PM EST weekdays on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT; or on the Audacy app!
