The participants discuss the impact of feature programming, the importance of including underrepresented artists in gold catalog programming, while emphasizing the need for accountability, system change, and support for emerging artists. Dear Spinning Circle,Thank you for joining us in another episode of Wool n' Spinning Radio. I welcome onto the show today, Ahn Wilson, who is two spirit Atikamekw and French on her mother's side and German on her father's side. Ahn is the visionary behind a very ambitious project, The Loving Blanket Project, to commemorate and share the collective weight of grief that all people experience as more and more graves are unearthed at the residential schools throughout Canada. In Ahn's words,When the first 215 were returned home, I felt the collective weight of grief through the nations. In my grief I shaved my head. No amount of time on the water (my medicine) would soothe it. More keep being found and it's been hard being alone. I've been trying to find a way to hold and collectively share in this grief in a meaningful way. Covid has made it hard for folx to gather in Ceremony. Or hold one another. Thus, after many months of thinking, by way of dream, came to me the idea to make a blanket. A very large blanket. One square to represent each child. One person to make one square. 'You may cut my hair, but the medicint is in the roots" (song by Digging Roots). We are the roots. We are the medicine. By each person stitching a square, we stitch outselves together in strength. We metamorpically hold one another and share the weight of collective grief.Have a listen to our converation and I hope you feel pulled to make a square, mailing it off to Ahn when you are done. You can send you work here:C/O Ahn WilsonPO Box 936Nelson PO Main, BCCanada V1L 5P9There are some things you need to know when you go to make your blanket - I have uploaded two PDFs that I have scanned from Ahn. Please download these before you start and read them through. There is increbibly important information in both of them, including problematic wording or imagery that would be important to leave OUT of the squares, alongside WELCOMING imagery and powerful words that one can place in your square(s).It might be helpful to make a square that you might dedicate to an individual child, group of children and place they lived. Think about how resilient those children are, what it might look like to welcome them home in celebration and warmth, and how you would wrap them in a blanket, feed them and love them. This might help you to get started. Gather your family, friends or maybe just yourself! '[Create] your square [to] have a connection to it; keep in mind your heritage and culture ... these squares are meant to bring a sense of joy with them, an energy of warmth and welcoming' (Ahn Wilson). Think about Ahn's comments from the episode about a party! Please leave your comments below so that I can help to clarify anything - if I'm not sure, I will reach out to Ahn.As always, thank you for listening and spending the time in this place. It was a pleasure to welcome Ahn onto the show.Until next time,Rachel

Digging Roots - "Tall Grass" from the 2022 album Zhawenim on Ishkōdé Records. Canadian duo Digging Roots returned this summer with their fourth LP Zhawenim. Since 2004, the husband-and-wife team of Raven Kanatakta Polson-Lahache and Sho-Shona Kish have crafted an award-winning blend of folk, hip-hop, and more with traditional Indigenous music. (Sho-Shona is Anishinabe, from Batchewana First Nation, while Raven is Anishinabe and Mohawk, from Winneway, Quebec.) The album title of "zhawenim" translates from Anishinabemowin to "to love unconditionally." As they write on their Facebook page, "Each of us has a thousand Ancestors standing with us. This collection of songs is for all our Ancestors, past, present and future. We're dedicating Zhawenim to the children. Those living now, those yet to come and to those little ones who were stolen and never made it home to their families. We will always live life to its fullest for them, play music and dance for them, and feast for them. Niikaanaagaanah." Consisting of husband-and-wife duo Raven Kanatakta and ShoShona Kish, Digging Roots is a JUNO Award-winning band that combines a strong social message with elements of folk-rock, pop, blues and hip-hop. They are a band that strongly believes in the transformative power of music and its healing effects, much like the traditional medicine in which their name is derived. As was the case with many artists over the course of the pandemic, the duo spent their time in lockdown crafting the songs that would eventually serve as the basis for their fourth studio album. Their latest release Zhawenim – a Anishinaabemowin word meaning “to love unconditionally”- marks the duo's first album in eight years. The new LP serves as a distillation of their values and perfectly encapsulates their ethos of truth and love. With messages ranging from connection to the land, residential schools, gun-related violence and the climate crisis, the songs featured in this latest album all share a strong message of change, while ultimately aiming to inspire people to move together. In this episode of CKUA's Hidden Track podcast, music and life partners Raven and ShoShona bring us a behind-the-scenes look at the inspirations behind their long-awaited Zhawenim album.

Did you buy yourself an indoor plant during the pandemic to cope with the stress of our early lockdown days? So did our co-host Justine, and in the process of caring for her indoor jungle, she learned all about the root system and just how connected it is to our experiences as hyphenated Canadians. In this episode, revel in stories about the earth, land, and soil. What it means to be repotted and replanted. What it means to recognize your native soil and to be connected to or disconnected from it. Today we're digging roots, exploring how we are uprooted from one place and moved to another. And how we can either flourish or wither in this new environment. Featured in this episode: • Desiree Mckenzie is an award-winning poet, arts educator, and photographer, based out of Toronto. Her poetry has also been featured as part of CBC's Poetic License series, VIBE Arts NExT Exhibit, and Clearbanc Financial's International Women's Day Campaign. In 2020, she was awarded the JAYU iAM Arts for Human Rights Award recognizing creatives doing exceptional work where the arts and human rights intersect. In March 2021, she released her EP, Wet Hair, now available on streaming platforms. Find her EP of spoken word poetry at linktr.ee/WETHAIREP and learn more about her at www.desireemckenziepoetry.com. Whether it’s on stage, in the studio, or behind the scenes, Winnipeg super bassist MJ Dandeneau is one of the hardest working artists on Canada’s Indigenous music scene. In addition to touring with the likes of Xavier Rudd, The Good Lovelies, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Leela Gilday and Digging Roots, she’s also a successful producer/engineer, booking agent and tour manager. But her path to music was far from conventional. On this week’s episode of Beyond The Mic, MJ talks about her dashed badminton career, almost becoming an occupational therapist and much, much more.
Singer Raven Kanetakta of Juno Award-winning indigenous group Digging Roots tells us a story of his deeply conflicted emotions, which were triggered by a made-in-Canada sound he heard late one night in the Rocky Mountains.
On this episode of Folk Roots Radio we take a look at the Roots North Music Festival taking place in Orillia ON, April 21-22 2017.
