Robert L. Dilenschneider, founder and principal of The Dilenschneider Group, is well known as a venerated strategic communications advisor and counselor to many of the world's most influential business and political leaders. Bob's extensive knowledge as a historian is less commonly known, especially one who can look to the past to identify role models whose lives are worth emulating today and in the future. Following on the heels of his two most recent history-focused books — Decisions: Practical Advice from 23 Men and Women Who Shaped the World and Nailing It: How History's Awesome Twentysomethings Got It Together — Bob's latest volume, available to pre-order now, is Character: Life Lessons in Courage, Integrity, and Leadership. Courage profiles a diverse group of 31 historical figures who drove society to be the best it could be. Among the disparate luminaries are Lou Gehrig, Winston Churchill, Julia Child, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Stephen Hawking, Margaret Chase Smith, Bill Russell, Jimmy Stewart, and S.P. Hinduja. Bob views character as a vital ingredient for success in public and private life. “From a respected older generation of mentors comes invaluable advice and hopeful direction for the young leaders, innovators, and influencers of tomorrow,” Bob writes in describing his book, which officially goes on sale March 25th. As co-host Maxwell Rotbart notes in introducing this week's podcast, Bob left one person out of Character. Himself. He, too, epitomizes courage, integrity, and leadership. [NOTE: The actionable insights of Robert L. Dilenschneider are featured in Maxwell Rotbart's award-winning anthology, All You Can Eat Business Wisdom. A free unabridged copy of Bob's chapter can be read here.] The Dilenschneider “Library” of 23 Books Includes: Character: Life Lessons in Courage, Integrity, and Leadership Decisions: Practical Advice from 23 Men and Women Who Shaped the World  Nailing It: How History's Awesome Twentysomethings Got It Together  The Ultimate Guide to Power & Influence: Everything You Need to Know The Public Relations Handbook 50 Plus!: Critical Career Decisions for the Rest of Your Life Monday Morning Radio is hosted by the father-son duo of Dean and Maxwell Rotbart. Robert L. Dilenschneider has been called “Dean of American Public Relations Executives.” As founder of The Dilenschneider Group, he provides strategic advice and counsel to Fortune 500 companies and leading families and individuals globally, with experience in fields ranging from mergers and acquisitions, crisis communications, marketing, government affairs, and international media. I couldn't wait to talk about all of this—including his new book The Public Relations Handbook—this week on the On Brand Podcast. About Robert L. Dilenschneider Robert L. Dilenschneider is founder of The Dilenschneider Group. Headquartered in New York and Chicago, the firm provides strategic advice and counsel to Fortune 500 companies and leading families and individuals around the world, with experience in fields ranging from mergers and acquisitions and crisis communications to marketing, government affairs, and international media. Prior to forming his own firm, Dilenschneider served as president and chief executive officer of Hill and Knowlton, Inc. from 1986 to 1991, tripling that Firm's revenues to nearly $200 million and delivering more than $30 million in profit. Dilenschneider was with that organization for nearly 25 years. Dilenschneider started in public relations in 1967 in New York, shortly after receiving an MA in journalism from Ohio State University, and a BA from the University of Notre Dame. Mr. Dilenschneider has been called the “Dean of American Public Relations Executives” and is widely published, having authored 17 books, including Decisions: Practical Advice from 23 Men and Women Who Shaped the World; A Briefing for Leaders; On Power, The Critical 14 Years of Your Professional Life; 50 Plus!—Critical Career Decisions for the Rest of Your Life, and Power and Influence: The Rules Have Changed. Episode Highlights Public relations today. Robert began our conversation with the two questions everyone should have in approaching a communication, “Who needs to know this and what action should they take?” “Oftentimes, your language doesn't work for your audience,” Robert cautions, noting that you have to figure out what language your audience uses. “Spend some time on lexicon,” even creating a manual with these keywords and phrases. What about crisis communication? “Crisis communication is a fantastic buzzword. I'm even recognized as a crisis communication expert. But the truth is if you've done things wrong you shouldn't need it if you've corrected what's wrong quickly and properly.” Sage advice in a crisis. Robert shared a crisis quote from Bill Dervin: “Tell it all, tell it fast.” Robert adds: “Dribbling your story is always a big mistake.” What brand has made Robert smile recently? Robert closed with a story that gave me a heartfelt smile hearing it. A dear friend of his is struggling with ALS. This friend bought one of Robert's wife's early paintings that helped her establish her career. Robert is now sending this ailing friend one of his wife's recent works. Smiles and well wishes all the way around! As the top journalist and now CEO of Fortune Media — publisher of Fortune magazine, Fortune.com, and an increasing array of live Fortune global conferences — Alan Murray is one of the most influential business journalists in the country. In his capacity as the head of Fortune, Alan has the opportunity to keep company with many of the world's most prominent and influential people, including presidents, heads of state, legendary CEOs, titans of Wall Street, and even the Pope. Alan is the author of a bold, newly released book, Tomorrow's Capitalist: My Search for the Soul of Business. In the book, Alan encapsulates the wisdom of his coterie, mixed with a full serving of his own savvy, to create a vision for a new, 21st-century breed of business owners and leaders. Alan dubs them Capitalists 2.0. Some of Alan's ideas are surprisingly radical — or, if not radical — certainly a break from the traditions of Corporate America and the deeply-rooted Milton Friedman philosophy that “There is one and only one social responsibility of business–to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits.” This week, Alan sits for an exclusive interview with host and award-winning author Dean Rotbart to explain how tomorrow's CEOs can do a better job than their predecessors for their employees, communities, and investors. [Note: Alan's journalism career spans more than four decades, including serving as deputy managing editor, executive editor online, Washington bureau chief, and a columnist for The Wall Street Journal. He is the recipient of a Business News Visionary Award, nominated by his peers and recognized for his transformative contributions to the business journalism profession. The Business News Visionary Awards are made possible by the support of Monday Morning Radio and The Dilenschneider Group. Additional support is provided by TimeinaBottlePhotography.com.] Next Monday, June 20th, as Monday Morning Radio begins its 11th year of podcasting, host Dean Rotbart will moderate an extra special panel to discuss a provocative new book, the Future of Business Journalism.  Everyone who owns a business, operates a professional practice, or works for either, understands the importance of the business news media - and their ability to provide actionable insights and intelligence. Chris Roush - Dean of the Quinnipiac University School of Communications and a veteran business journalist, is the author of The Future of Business Journalism which contends that significant changes must take place in the ways business journalism organizations operate for the betterment of Main Street and Wall Street. Joining Chris and Dean will be four distinguished business journalists: Peter Coy, Opinion Economics Writer, The New York Times Henry Dubroff, Owner and Founder, Pacific Coast Business Times Matt Murray, Editor in Chief, The Wall Street Journal Matt Quayle, Senior Executive Producer, CNBC-TV Photo: Alan Murray, Fortune MediaPosted: June  13, 2022Monday Morning Run Time: One Hour and Two Minutes

Good PR has become everyone's responsibility, regardless of your industry or job title. That is a core message shared by a distinguished panel of three experts on this week's edition of Monday Morning Radio. Leading the panel is Robert L. Dilenschneider, editor of the newly published fifth edition of The Public Relations Handbook, a must-read for communications practitioners and a valuable reference for executives who wisely recognize that public relations is integral to every activity and decision they make. Dilenschneider is the founder of The Dilenschneider Group, which for more than three decades has been providing strategic advice and counsel to Fortune 500 companies and leading families and individuals around the world.  “Public relations professionals must be prepared to deal with a staggering variety of people, issues, and subjects,” Dilenschneider writes. His book consists of seventeen chapters, each contributed by recognized PR specialists. Two of the contributors — Jack Devine and Virginia A. Kamsky — join Dilenschneider and host and award-winning journalist Dean Rotbart on the panel. Devine is a founding partner and president of The Arkin Group, specializing in international crisis management, strategic intelligence, investigative research, and business problem-solving. He previously spent 32 years with the CIA, having served - among other posts - as Acting Director of Operations. Kamsky, who divides her time between New York and Beijing, is the founder of Kamsky Associates, Inc., a strategic advisory firm whose client base includes preeminent companies worldwide. During the Obama Administration, she was appointed a member of the US Secretary of the Navy Advisory Panel, providing independent advice and recommendations. “The best thing anybody reading this book can do right now is come away and say, ‘Life has changed and if I'm going to keep up with it and be successful, I better change too,'” Dilenschneider says. “The book offers the ways people should adapt to the changing environment.” Released in February 2022 by Matt Holt Books, The Public Relations Handbook is available from Amazon in hardcover, Kindle, and audiobook editions.
