In today's leadership spark, I chat with Alan Murray, CEO of Fortune Media. Alan and I delve into the evolution of business and leadership. According to him, nowadays, businesses value ideas and people more than just physical stuff, like buildings and machines. He noticed that some people seem not to want to work as much, but he believes many are still hardworking and dedicated.  Alan thinks being a good leader today means inspiring and motivating people and showing realness and understanding, pointing out how the late Arne Sorenson of Marriott led by example during tough times. Throughout our conversation, we've highlighted the significant generational shifts and the increasing importance of adaptability and a people-centric approach in leadership. __________________ This episode is sponsored by Kyndryl. I'm noticing a few core traits in the many guests I've hosted for the Real Technologist podcast. Authenticity and a willingness to say yes. This rings true for guest Jonathan Rivers. He was recommended to me as somebody who absolutely is passionate about making opportunities for others. Talking with each guest is filled with surprises and challenges my own preconceived notions. Jonathan Rivers is the CTO of Fortune Media which includes Fortune Magazine. In doing some research, I came across Jonathan's headshot. Sometimes his photos show a mild smirk though often the photos have an intensity that you feel. This looks like the kind of person that you want on your side, especially when the chips are down.Interestingly, my expectations for the Zoom call were that I would see an opulent executive office in a high rise overlooking a spectacular view. Perhaps with some modern art chandelier. What I encountered was an average guy in what looked to be like an average cube spot or office touchdown spot. The lighting was less than average, though it doesn't really matter for audio. Over his shoulder was the only discernible decoration: a whiteboard with an architectural diagram scribbled in marker. He doesn't smile often, though when he does, you feel a sense of satisfaction that he is human. I would not say that he's a big old teddy bear like my close friend Bryan Finster. Instead, I would say that this is a super intense and intelligent human. As we discussed his origin story, and going from a kid in Texas to the CTO of Fortune Media, we touched on myriad topics including his philosophy on diversity. I was very curious what I was going to hear from this white, middle aged biker dude. Jonathan Rivers: It's incredibly near and dear to my heart. For so many reasons. One, I'm really proud of the team that I've built here at Fortune.I built it with that in mind. And I'll tell you why... One, 'cause it's the right fucking thing to do. But more importantly , you look at this from a tech industry perspective, the moment that you establish a bro culture in tech, if you hire a bunch of white nerds out of suburbia that all wanna talk about Fortnite, you are sunk, right? If I hire me, me number two is gonna have all the same blind spots that I have. And I want a team of really different people that see things from different backgrounds, that see problems from different angles, that want different things out of life. Frankly, they all behave better. Everybody behaves better when you're in mixed company than when you do when you're with your buddies.

As the top journalist and now CEO of Fortune Media — publisher of Fortune magazine, Fortune.com, and an increasing array of live Fortune global conferences — Alan Murray is one of the most influential business journalists in the country. In his capacity as the head of Fortune, Alan has the opportunity to keep company with many of the world's most prominent and influential people, including presidents, heads of state, legendary CEOs, titans of Wall Street, and even the Pope. Alan is the author of a bold, newly released book, Tomorrow's Capitalist: My Search for the Soul of Business. In the book, Alan encapsulates the wisdom of his coterie, mixed with a full serving of his own savvy, to create a vision for a new, 21st-century breed of business owners and leaders. Alan dubs them Capitalists 2.0. Some of Alan's ideas are surprisingly radical — or, if not radical — certainly a break from the traditions of Corporate America and the deeply-rooted Milton Friedman philosophy that “There is one and only one social responsibility of business–to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits.” This week, Alan sits for an exclusive interview with host and award-winning author Dean Rotbart to explain how tomorrow's CEOs can do a better job than their predecessors for their employees, communities, and investors. Responding to their employees and customers who are demanding corporate change, they have taken the lead in establishing the bold new principles of stakeholder capitalism, ensuring that for the first time in more than a half a century it is not just shareholders who have a say in how corporations are run.   Alan Murray is CEO of Fortune Media, and writer of the popular daily newsletter, the Fortune CEO Daily. A career journalist, prior to joining Fortune in 2015, Murray was President of Pew Research Center, and had a long career at the Wall Street Journal serving as Deputy Managing Editor, Executive Editor Online, Washington Bureau Chief, and author of the Political Capital and Business columns. Murry also served as Washington bureau chief for CNBC, and as cohost of the nightly show Capital Report.     In this episode we discuss: The impact of the Great Resignation on leadership The power of shareholder activism The surprising acceleration caused by the global pandemic The shift to companies publicly standing up for their values   Key Takeaways: As Alan mentioned, companies have gone from physical assets making up 80% of the market value for S&P 500 companies in 1975 to intangible assets making up 80% of the market value today (HBR). This makes sense. Taking a step back, the industrial revolution brought with it the assembly line, the industrial worker, and employees as “resources”. Output was linear and easy to measure. Those linear, repeatable tasks are now often done by technology. The value of companies in the knowledge age comes from their intangible assets: Their employees, and their employees showing up as humans performing complicated—nonlinear—tasks like creativity, innovation, and empathy. This is a dramatic shift. From personal experience, I can honestly say that early in my career I was probably only 10% human at work and 90% robot, focused on efficiency since that was what was rewarded and expected of me. Thankfully we're entering a new age, and company cultures are catching on to what environments foster the best in their people, and an understanding that having employees bring their whole self to work is what will make their company great. Change takes time. While the pandemic provided one silver lining, which is the great acceleration of the stakeholder capitalism movement and bringing humanity into the core of business, figuring out how to do this right, getting the right metrics and supporting structures in place, will take time. Progress is always a continually evolving journey of learning what works, what doesn't, and how to do better. The amazing opportunity, and invitation, businesses have been given to identify their purpose, define their values, bring meaning into their business strategy, and then find ways to use their voice, their power, and their business model to create a world that brings their purpose and values to life.   References: Connect with Alan on LinkedIn and follow him on Twitter Tomorrow's Capitalist: My Search for the Soul of Business by Alan Murray World Economic Forum 2008 speech by Bill Gates, Davos, Switzerland 2018 Shared Value Leadership Summit video of Alan in conversation with Hillary Clinton Proposed SEC amendment, “The Enhancement and Standardization of Climate-Related Disclosures for Investors” and accompanying press release “Exxon loses board seats to activist hedge fund in landmark climate vote”, Jennifer Hiller and Svea Herbst-Bayliss, Reuters, May 26, 2021 BlackRock CEO Larry Fink's 2022 letter to CEOs, “The Power of Capitalism” The FORTUNE CEO Initiative   Connect & Share: If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? 3 Takeaways
Business Revolution: Tech, Talent, Purpose with Fortune Media CEO Alan Murray (#92)

3 Takeaways

Play Episode Listen Later May 10, 2022 30:08

Fortune Media CEO Alan Murray shares the dramatic changes in business today due to the tech revolution, which is disrupting so many businesses, and the purpose revolution which is causing companies to re-think what they should be doing. He believes that fundamental changes in the ways businesses operate today are forcing them to pay more attention to people and the planet. It used to be that 80% of the value of the Fortune 500 came from physical assets but now over 85% of the value is intangible assets including intellectual property, software, brand value and the human emotional connection that comes from brand value.  Since intangibles, which is where the value lies today, are things that are much more closely tied to people - it's human ingenuity that creates the intellectual property, it's human emotion that creates the brand value and the brand connection -  business leaders are paying much more attention to people. Alan shares how that is changing the purpose of corporations and the role of the CEO today. He also talks about how business has changed due to the pandemic, remote work, Black Lives Matter, rising inequality, global warming and the Ukraine Russia war.Unless businesses are responsive to their employees, their customers and their communities, Alan believes they will lose. The biggest changes, he says, are yet to come. His new book is Tomorrow's Capitalist.

Welcome to the What's Next! podcast with Tiffani Bova. Entering with a bang, Alan Murray comes on the show this week to talk about the transformation of the corporate world in this modern era. Alan is CEO of Fortune Media. He oversees the business and editorial operations of the independent media company and is known for expanding its digital and conference franchises. Murray also writes a closely-read daily newsletter for Fortune, CEO Daily. Prior to joining Fortune in 2015, Murray led the rapid expansion of the Pew Research Center's digital footprint as president of that organization. Before that, Murray was at the Wall Street Journal for many years, serving as deputy managing editor, executive editor online, Washington bureau chief, and author of the Political Capital and Business columns. He served for several years as Washington bureau chief for CNBC, and cohost of the nightly show Capital Report. He is the author of multiple books, including Showdown at Gucci Gulch: Lawmakers, Lobbyists, and the Unlikely Triumph of Tax Reform.   THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR…  consumers, employees, or business leaders that seeks the understand the ways in which profit-driven models for businesses have transformed and shifted towards value-driven motives.   TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… Our guest says that Capitalism has been a dynamic driving force in the development of the economy, guiding the startup of largest companies that are now known as the Fortune 500. But the Capitalism doesn't play by the same set of rules as it did before – now more than ever, companies are shifting towards a model of business that Alan Murray refers to as “shareholder capitalism.” In this modern era of Capitalism, company values must reflect consumer values, placing an emphasis towards Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues to meet the demands of socially conscious investors, shareholders and consumers.    WHAT I LOVE MOST… Company culture, diversity and public values now take the front seat when considering business success models. Alan says this mode of thinking is here to stay and that we, as consumers, as employees, as the general populace can continue to influence businesses just by changing the public sentiment.     Running time: 32:37 Subscribe on iTunes     Find Tiffani on social: Facebook Twitter LinkedIn   Find Alan online: Official Website Twitter LinkedIn   Alan's Book: Tomorrow's Capitalist: My Search for the Soul of Business
