Psalm 56:1-13 | Nathan Noorlun | "In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?" Captured by the Philistines, David calls out to God in a prayer saturated with confidence and hope in God. Here, we see that, although oppressed and imprisoned, the hope of God's people is in God himself.
Most people when asked if they will be allowed in Heaven say yes based on their good works out weighing the bad they have done. They have never read the Bible to see if this is true or not. Paul addresses the -Works- salvation line of thinking with two Jewish heroes as examples to back up his view on the matter.
Big data. Baseball managers use it to win pennants. Stockbrokers use it to beat the market. And now you can use it to get what you really want in life. That's according to a new book by Seth Stephens-Davidowitz called Don't Trust Your Gut. When faced with difficult life decisions-like "Who should I marry?" and "How can I avoid screwing up my kids?"-we typically follow our intuition. The problem is that our intuition is often wrong. The smarter move, Seth says, is to comb through millions of data points to find statistically significant answers. But who has time for that, not to mention the technical know-how? Well, Seth does. And this week on the show, he'll share the answers he found, starting with the surprising traits you should look for when searching for your soulmate.

In the era of “fake news” how do you know what to trust? Today's guest, Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, has found the last dependable source of truth: Google. Armed with Google trends data, Seth illuminates hidden truths about racism, politics, and sexuality in our world today. In today's interview, Seth dives into his latest book Don't Trust Your Gut: Using Data to Get What You Really Want in Life. He shares interesting insights he gathered along the way and how unfortunately, lying and data sometimes go hand-in-hand.--------“Google trends is so powerful because it gives you an incentive to get the information you need. And PornHub, similarly, gives you an incentive to get the information you need. So even in an anonymous survey, there's no incentive for people to tell the truth.” — Seth Stephens-Davidowitz--------Time Stamps* (0:00) Is your data full of lies?* (2:45) Seth's book Everybody Lies* (6:25) Google trends is a data treasure trove* (11:36) How data can help you online date* (16:25) Taking a data-driven approach to your personal life* (19:33) The data behind happiness * (24:13) Seth's book Don't Trust Your Gut and how it can change your approach to business--------SponsorThis podcast is presented by Alation.Hear more radical perspectives on leading data culture at Alation.com/podcast--------LinksCheck out Seth's WorkSeth's book : Don't Trust Your Gut: Using Data to Get What You Really Want in Life
Sean Illing talks with former Google data scientist Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, author of Don't Trust Your Gut. Seth argues that the way we make decisions is wrong, outdated, and based on methods or conventional wisdom that lead us astray from getting what we want. Sean and Seth discuss the idea of using data in place of our own intuition and reason to help us through things like online dating, picking a place to live, and being a better parent. Plus, how can we trust "experience sampling" studies that rely on self-reporting, when — after all — everybody lies? TrueHoop’s Jarod Hector and David Thorpe discuss Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Celtics and Warriors. It looked like the “Thorpe Rule” was activated after the Warriors’ masterful third quarter, but then the Celtics amped up their defense and made tons of shots in the fourth. How did that happen? It’s a coach’s league as well as a player’s league. What makes the Celtics’ Ime Udoka so special?Stephen Curry looked brilliant in the first quarter and only scored 13 the rest of the game. David believes Boston’s size played a big role and will be tough to overcome. Draymond Green thinks Marcus Smart, Al Horford, and Derrick White won’t shoot a combined 15-23 again. He’s probably right but Jarod and David think that’s a bad way to look at the series. Is it always the best decision to trust your gut? When it's time to make a simple decision, (where to eat, what car to buy, where to go on vacation) we rely on resources and data at our disposal. We check reviews, compare ratings, and ultimately decide based on available data. So why does it often feel like we're winging it when it comes to bigger life decisions? Am I happy? Am I working on the right things? Is my career on the right path? What would our lives look like if we took a data driven approach to some of life's bigger questions? Seth Stephens-Davidowitz is an author, data scientist, and speaker who studies what we can learn about people from new, internet data sources. In this episode, Seth discusses why you don't need to wing it as much as you think you have to. Seth's call to action is to observe the data that is readily available to you. Use them as guide posts. If we consider the collective experience of others in our own decision making, we start to understand ourselves on a deeper level; and that is a powerful place to make decisions from. Seth's Book, "Don't Trust Your Gut" is available now. Enjoy! --- Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. On today’s episode of BRING IT IN TrueHoop’s Henry Abbott is joined by Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, the author of “Don't Trust Your Gut: Using Data to Get What You Really Want in Life”Seth is a serious academic who has spent his adult life marinating in data. He’s also a huge sports fan, whose book has a surprising amount of NBA insight. He has data suggesting that genes play a bigger role in making it in the NBA than in other sports. He cites a groundbreaking study about human happiness, which finds playing basketball probably makes people very happy, but watching basketball less so. To improve his own happiness, he has actually tried to be less of a fan of an NBA team. Also, he’s a Knicks fan. And there’s big evidence that working with your friends makes you like work a lot better. Is that an argument for stars assembling teams of people they like?RECENT BRING IT IN EPISODES:May 6, 2022 The one with Kevin Arnovitz...May 2, 2022 Adjusting in the playoffsApril 29, 2022 In the NBA playoffs all you need is love?April 25, 2022 Playoff series change on a dime...April 22, 2022 Injuries will decide the NBA title This is a public episode. David and Michelle use an apt example to support their position - the Donner Party. The vast majority of the group went along with the collective thinking - regardless of their personal thoughts. It cost them their lives. But more so, it was the most horrific way to go - all because they betrayed their gut, went against their instincts due to the fact that they couldn't bring themselves to disagree with the majority. Sounds familiar? It should. Most group-think is flawed. Probiotics are quickly becoming a huge business, claiming to heal millions with the power of balancing the biosphere of symbiotic bacteria in their guts. But the science is a lot more complicated than hawkers of supplements and yogurts will have you believe, and far from helping good bacteria recolonize your digestive tract, they're merely delivery mechanisms for benign and temporary microscopic visitors. So where does the science end and hype begin? Are there any real benefits to probiotics? And what can we learn from studying our bacterial biomes?
