Your biological age can drop by over three years in just eight weeks, and the tools to do it are already in your kitchen. This episode breaks down the cutting-edge science of methylation, polyphenols, Yamanaka mimetics, and epigenetic reprogramming that is rewriting what we know about anti-aging, longevity, and human performance. -Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Dr. Kara Fitzgerald, ND, IFMCP, a leading voice in functional medicine and epigenetic aging research. Her award-winning clinical studies published in Aging (2021, 2023, and 2025) proved that targeted diet and lifestyle interventions can measurably reverse biological age on validated epigenetic clocks. She is the author of Younger You, an IFM faculty member and Certified Practitioner, and one of the most rigorously credentialed researchers working at the intersection of functional medicine, nutrition, and longevity science today. Together, they go deep on Yamanaka factors, the Nobel Prize-winning discovery that can wind back a 90-year-old cell to its 20s, and the emerging class of compounds called Yamanaka mimetics, polyphenol-based supplements that may replicate some of those same cellular rejuvenation effects without the risks. They cover why polyphenols do the heavy lifting in biological age reversal, how AI is accelerating longevity research, and why the dark matter of nutrition may matter more than macros, carnivore protocols, or ketosis for long-term health. They also get into oxalates, mitochondria, fibroids, ovarian rejuvenation, and why the original Horvath clock may be more relevant than scientists thought. This is essential listening for anyone serious about biohacking, longevity, supplements, functional medicine, anti-aging, brain optimization, human performance, and using smarter not harder strategies to take control of your biology. You'll Learn: How diet, supplements, and meditation reversed biological age by over three years in eight weeks in a randomized controlled trial What Yamanaka factors are and why scientists are calling partial cellular reprogramming the future of anti-aging Which polyphenols do the heaviest lifting for epigenetic rejuvenation, including EGCG, urolithin A, rosemary, marjoram, and yarrow Why the Horvath epigenetic clock may actually be touching on programmatic aging rather than just exposomic wear and tear How AI is unlocking patterns in longevity data that no human researcher could find alone The problem with high-oxalate superfoods and how to get polyphenol benefits without the inflammatory downside Why ovarian rejuvenation may be the highest-leverage Yamanaka application for women's longevity and brain health How compounds like AKG, sodium butyrate, and forskolin may act as Yamanaka mimetics already available today What the PRC2 polycomb clock reveals about programmatic aging and why it matters more than second-generation clocks Why perimenopause does not have to be painful, and how functional medicine addresses it at the root Thank you to our sponsors! - Screenfit | Get your at-home eye training program for 40% off using code DAVE at https://www.screenfit.com/dave. - Viome | Check it out at viome.com and use code 10DAVE for 10% off. There are a number of people advocating a diet low in oxalates, essentially eliminating many green leafy vegetables, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, celery, most nuts, berries, cocoa, and numerous otherwise healthy foods. Unfortunately, this advice is misguided and based on an incomplete understanding of the evidence. While there is no harm in reducing dietary oxalates beyond inconvenience, lack of variety, and the absence of many genuinely healthy foods, reducing oxalate exposure is not the primary problem, just a Band-Aid. Oxalate hyperabsorption is due to disruption of the gastrointestinal microbiome: loss of the many species that metabolize oxalates but were eliminated or reduced due to antibiotic exposure, and the development of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, SIBO, that is associated with abnormally increased oxalate absorption. Address the disrupted gastrointestinal and dietary oxalate consumption is no longer an issue for the vast majority of people. In this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, let's discuss why so many people have been misled by this dietary oxalate issue and a smarter way to deal with what might be interpreted as oxalate intolerance. These days, the health and wellness industry really isn't much better than it was years ago, especially when it comes to the chronically ill getting the help they need for healing. Some aspects have improved, but for the most part it's still the same old sea of confusion out there. Carb-free diets, milk cleanses, meat only diets, extreme water fasting, bone broth cleanses, intermittent fasting, eat-what-you-want diets, trendy supplements filled with natural flavors, or supplements that are just toxic in general...the list goes on and on. It's a wonder how the chronically ill can find their way through it all. And then there's the good ole Oxalate Theory that peaks its ugly head out every five years and torments the people who are already tormented by what ails them. There are a few reasons why oxalate fear is still here and it's the same reasons so many other fads and trends of health are still here: it's marketing, PR campaigns, shock and awe strategies based on fear, and to this day, no one really knows why people are really sick. Just say oxalates are the cause and the fear takes over; it's an easy sell, but it's not the reality. It's still a world of guessing games out there. The health movement keeps reigniting and spreading oxalates over and over again. An unfounded theory that holds people with chronic illness back and places them in a fear-based mentality with food...this is a nightmare. And as far as the influencers and health professionals that keep talking up and spreading oxalate fear, let's just say it's truly sad in so many ways. The truth is almost every food has oxalates in it, including animal protein. The people screaming their heads off about oxalates are picking on a small list of fruits and veggies, and spinach takes the biggest hit. Meanwhile, spinach is a powerful healing leafy green for the chronically ill. In this episode… Discover why oxalate fear is a recycled health trend trap that diverts chronically ill people from effective healing paths. Learn how testing for oxalates is unreliable and lacks accuracy. Find out why the fear of oxalate-rich foods is unnecessary and harmful, and why foods like spinach, celery, and potatoes are demonized. Learn how kidney stones are not caused by oxalates and why that's a flawed theory. Discover the truth about viral infections and how they are the real cause of many chronic illnesses, not oxalates. Find out why the oxalate theory is recycled misinformation and how it resurfaces periodically, misleading new generations of health seekers. Learn how mainstream and alternative health practitioners can unintentionally spread misleading oxalate fears. Even well-meaning doctors and health coaches may unknowingly promote harmful ideas due to lack of experience with chronic illness. Discover how Medical Medium tools (like celery juice and zinc) are real solutions and effective treatments for chronic conditions, as opposed to avoiding oxalates. All this and more, tune in and don't miss out on this important episode. You can revisit this episode anytime you need it. For more information visit www.medicalmedium.com
