Competing, simultaneous political events on Saturday - a major abortion rights protest and a Donald Trump rally - have led to fears of unrest in downtown Austin. APD Chief Joe Chacon has reiterated that his department's policies have changed since the George Floyd protests in the summer of 2020, and pledges that his officers will keep public safety top of mind. Half of the Austin City Council's members could face an unexpected fall election, pending the outcome of an ongoing lawsuit. A contrast in school districts: Austin ISD students stage a mass walkout in defense of reproductive rights, while Eanes ISD creates a public database to track challenges over library books from offended parents. People continue flocking into Austin as they have for decades - but you might be surprised to learn that there are 15 U.S. metros currently outranking Austin in newcomer growth, including Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio. Retail space rent in the South Congress neighborhood has reached $150 per square foot - prices that are similar to storefronts in Manhattan. Schematics for the new Meta tower, which when completed will be Austin's new tallest building, are unveiled. Wait times for TSA security at Austin Bergstrom International Airport have dropped lately - but the summer travel season has yet to really begin. Austin FC are away this weekend at Real Salt Lake - match begins at 8:30pm Central and will be carried by ESPN Plus. Don't forget to look for this weekend's total lunar eclipse, between about 8:30 Sunday night and 1:50 Monday morning - maximum eclipse at 11:11pm Sunday. And hot weather continues - mid-90's Friday and Saturday, 97 on Sunday, 100 on Monday. Slight to moderate rain chances creep into the forecast in about a week, projected now to begin Saturday May 21 and continue for the following week - fingers crossed.

Austin ISD's Pride Week celebrations went on as scheduled over the weekend, despite objections from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Texas baseball loses a series of three to Texas Tech, two games to 1, the first of which went to the Red Raiders in a rare walk-off steal of home, but the last of which ended in a 12-1 shellacking of Tech by the Longhorns. Music reacts too: SXSW will require vaccines or negatives, while many other shows are rescheduled, postponed or cancelled. Austin Animal Center will begin closing on Sundays. State Rep. Celia Israel announces a run for Austin Mayor. The headquarters of the Comal County Democratic Party were vandalized in New Braunfels on Monday night. Hospitalizations for COVID in Austin continue rising, as the metro hits a new all-time low for ICU capacity: 2 staffed beds. Austin ISD is joined among school districts in major Texas cities defying Governor Greg Abbott's ban on mask requirements by conservative-leaning Fort Worth ISD - all five of the state's largest cities have now revolted - while Eanes ISD remains mask-optional amid heated division among the families of its students. Co-owned restaurants Launderette and Fresa's are now requiring vaccine proof for indoor dining. The Austin City Limits Music Festival remains on for October, amidst growing online pressure to cancel and the loss of headliner Stevie Nicks (meanwhile, Tyler The Creator replaces DaBaby). Recent Austin transplant Joe Rogan is under fire after running COVID misinformation on his Friday show. Both of Texas' U.S. Senators - John Cornyn and Ted Cruz - vote against the huge federal infrastructure package, which passed the Senate on party lines this morning. And little old Blanco, Texas is in danger of running out of water.

Special Episode! This weekend I am at the ASTE Conference, and I had the privilege of learning from Carl Hooker for a leadership workshop all day on Saturday. It’s always fun to learn from a great presenter, and Carl is one of those. Carl did a great job of engaging a bunch of administrators, helping us get our guard down, and making the conversation great. Carl has been involved in education since graduating from the University of Texas in 1998. He has been in a variety of positions in both Austin ISD and Eanes ISD, from 1st grade teacher to Virtualization Coordinator. He’s a father of three girls, Sophia, Lauren, and Caroline and a wonderful, understanding wife Renee, all of which play a large role in any presentations he gives or blogs he writes. Carl is the Director of Innovation & Digital Learning in the Eanes Independent School District. He is also the founder of the learning festival called iPadpalooza. As Director, he utilizes his background in both education and technology to bring a unique vision to the district and its programs. During his time in the position, the district has jumped into social media, adopted the Google Apps for Education and started to build a paperless environment with Google Docs. He helped spearhead the LEAP (Learning and Engaging through Access and Personalization) which put 1:1 iPads into the hands of all K–12 students at Eanes. See more at Mr. Hooker's Web Site! Classroom 2.0 LIVE webinar, "Capturing Creativity with Canva" presented by Lisa Johnson, @TechChef4U, June 6, 2015. We are so excited to have Lisa Johnson (@TechChef4U) with us to share her expertise and experiences with Canva for visual literacy in this webinar. Canva (https://www.canva.com/ ) is a website that allows you to create and design your own graphics and images for free, and has a library of free images to use (as well as some stock imagery available at a $1 per image should you wish to use them). If you need to make beautiful posters, invitations, cards, website graphics, or even multiple-page presentations, Canva is a design service you're going to want to use. Vicki Davis has said of Canva’s education initiatives, “Graphics are an essential part of today’s communication and influence. It isn’t just about making it look pretty. Effective graphics help us better articulate ideas and inspire action.” Canva reinforces its commitment to the education space by providing a tool that enables teachers and students to innovate, collaborate, and communicate through visual design. Canva’s new education center is aimed at providing learning resources for teachers looking for dynamic and engaging ways to integrate visual project-based learning into their core curriculum. About Lisa Johnson: TechChef4u is a family-owned business led by CEO and founder Lisa Johnson. The mission of TechChef4u is to provide technology integration resources and support to all… with a splash of personality and a heaping helping of creativity. Lisa has 12 years of educational experience ranging from teaching HS English & MS Math to international curriculum development, creating and presenting workshops, and even running technology integration camps across the state of Texas. Currently, Lisa serves Eanes ISD which proudly supports an 1:1 iPad initiative from K-12. Additionally, she has been recognized and selected as an Apple Distinguished Educator. Her love for “cooking up” technology integrated lessons and the need for a creative & productive outlet led her to create the TechChef4u blog in early May of 2011. In early 2012 TechChef4u was officially launched as an educational entity supporting and promoting purposeful and engaging integration of mobile devices at home and in the iClassroom. Lisa continues to share her app-thusiasm for iLearning at multiple conferences worldwide including Mobile 2012, TCEA, ISTE, FETC, iPadpalooza, Tech Forum, iPad Summit, and Australia’s Slide2Learn.

*It wasn’t until later in my career that I realized applying creativity to problem-solving is critical in engaging students.* *Claudio Zavala Jr.* ( https://iamclaudius.com/ ) *and* *Fred Benitez* ( https://twitter.com/fredbenitez?lang=en ) *don’t just understand that component of the learning cycle. They also use it to train teachers and students. Both of them inspire my growth as an educator.* *Claudio Zavala, Jr. and Fred Benitez are renowned educational technologists, in Burleson ISD and Eanes ISD respectively, that develop training for teachers, staff, and students. Both are Adobe Education Leaders and have presented at education conferences like* *ISTE* ( https://iste.org/ ) *,* *TCEA* ( https://tcea.org/ ) *, and* *Adobe for Education* ( https://www.adobe.com/education.html ) *.* *In this episode, we discuss the importance of being creative in teaching and problem-solving. We discuss why it’s important to take bite-sized or “Chicken Nugget” opportunities to incorporate creativity into the learning cycle — with or without electronic devices. We also discuss how tools like Adobe Spark lower the barrier for designing beautiful graphics, web pages, and video stories in minutes. Adobe Spark is an excellent tool for remote and face-to-face learners to show mastery of learning objectives. What I like even more is that these learning tools can be used by all students from kindergarten through 12th grade.* Copyright Chillhop Music - https://chll.to/b9bb917b Copyright Chillhop Music - https://chll.to/6cd0b356 Copyright Chillhop Music - https://chll.to/fae889b3
