Today it is my absolute pleasure to introduce you to Don Wettrick. Before we start, I wanted to apologise to Don for the delay in getting this episode out into the world; we recorded it some time ago. He is an author, TEDx speaker, an educator and a podcaster. Don is the founder and CEO of the STARTedUP Foundation, a nonprofit focused on encouraging students to view the world through the lens of entrepreneurship. He is well-versed in innovation, entrepreneurship, and the importance of arming students with the skills and the network to succeed. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife of 27 years, Alicia, and their three children.
"This is the true joy in life; Being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one, being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances, complaining that the world will not devote itself to make you happy. I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community, and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it what I can. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations." - George Bernard ShawThis week on Write Your Own Story, Rebecca is joined by Don Wettrick. Looking for ways to think more creatively? Guest Don Wettrick shares his insight on how we can think more creatively about your business or brand.Don Don Wettrick is the founder and CEO of The STARTedUP Foundation, which hosts Innovate WithIN- Indiana's innovation and entrepreneurship programming and competition. He is also the author of “Pure Genius: Building a Culture of Innovation,” which aims to create innovation mindsets in our schools. Don is known for his award-winning work as a teacher, educational and innovation consultant, and educational speaker.Wettrick has also hosted a podcast for the past five years, where he has interviewed some of the top entrepreneurs, authors, and thought leaders in the country. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his wife of 27 years, Alicia, and his three children. MAIN TAKEAWAYS:When researching it's such a time for creativity and innovation. How do you engage yourself in new ideas and thought processes?Problems are opportunities for solutions- Don Wettrick. Complaining and talking about issues garner conversations and brainstorming. Conversations with people and solving challenges that people present can present opportunities to learn. If you don't like something or know how to do something, know more people who do and have conversations with them about it. Many people don't make space in their day to learn, be inspired, or brainstorm. Taking in information and uploading it is a mental process. It's detrimental to our brains to overindulge in social media and pornographic content (still a taboo subject). People get stuck on the endless scroll. It's damaging our brains and natural thinking process. The hardest things to do in the world are the things you say you are going to do. If you want to set a goal, don't tell anybody. You've told your brain you're 90% there.”Fear sometimes keeps us from accomplishing the things we want to accomplish. We fear not reaching our goals.

Who do young people look up to today? The lifestyles marketed on MTV and social media not exactly something to aspire to, but where can the next generation go to find something different? Inspired by the work of her father, Don Wettrick, and feeling like she needed to take charge of the issue, Ava Wettrick created MentorZ, a platform designed to introduce great people to Generation Z. As a young child, Ava thought her dad was the smartest guy in the world. It wasn't until she got older that she realized he wasn't necessarily smart, he just read a lot. She's witnessed his transition from teacher to owning a non-profit and embrace the experience. Being a voracious reader, it didn't take much pushing from her dad to begin consuming content from the likes of Tom Bilyeu, Simon Sinek, and Victor Franco and having an influence over her peers. Since getting to know several entrepreneurs, Ava questioned whether or not college is worth the time and expense. She was surrounded by highly successful people telling not to go to college, but she is attending college and has found it helpful to have the financial support of her parents and scholarships while growing, learning and choosing the information she wants to consume. Don acknowledges that for some majors, college is still relevant, and for those who have the money should go, but have a plan. He thinks the best thing students can do is to start doing the thing they might love and begin to shadow people to determine if it is a good fit. Majoring in entrepreneurship at Ball State, Ava is learning about accounting, marketing, running a business, and being a CEO which has only accelerated her drive to make the podcast a success and provides quality content and great messages. Interviewing guests for her podcast has been a significant personal learning experience and changed her perspective on the power of an interview. She waited a year to release the episode recorded with Tom Bilyeu because she feared it wasn't good enough and yet people think it was one of her best. And following her interview with Dov Baron, she received feedback that he believed in her and wanted to mentor her. While there are ways of doing things to make them appear more important than they are, “fake it til you make it” can have its drawbacks. Don believes humility can be key when it comes to Imposter Syndrome. When it comes to second generation FI, Don says it happens by osmosis. His kids have been raised under a frugal lifestyle. Since his last appearance on the podcast, Don left his teaching job to take the non-profit to the next level, growing both the team starting chapters in co-working spaces and tech hubs. Feeling tired of the extreme virtue-signaling competition happening on social media, I tweeted last week, “I can’t wait until people get tired of cancel culture and the ‘woke’ mob.“My friend Don Wettrick replied, “I think many, MANY are. It’s just that Twitter pushes them to the top. I would like for people w principles and calm would speak out more. @naval ^ @ZubyMusic come to mind.“Zuby saw it and retweeted my original tweet with a comment, “Some of us have been for 5+ years.“A quick look at the comments showed just how many people are sick and tired of the virtue-signaling social justice warriors, cancel culture, and the woke mob.Yet, very few are speaking out against this because of how vicious social justice warriors are when you oppose them, or have any sort differing opinion (they’ll try to “cancel” you).I must do a podcast about this, I thought. If people don’t want to follow me or listen to my podcast anymore because of this episode, then so be it. I don’t exactly value people who are a part of cancel culture and the “woke” mob as listeners of my podcast anyway so I could care less if they “cancel” me. Plus, as one listener puts it, “I don’t see how anyone is able to absorb self-improvement info while maintaining a victim mentality which is essentially what creates cancel culture.”So, I emailed Zuby. He replied 59 minutes later: “Let’s do it.”We discussed…The mindless destruction of statuesWhy Zuby says black people actually aren’t oppressedSocialismThe media’s effect on peopleWhy radical feminism is a greater threat to humanity than climate changeWho social justice warriors really areThe truth about “Black Lives Matters” (the organization, not the statement)How to deal with cancel culture and the “woke” mob if they come after youRegarding Black Lives Matter, I thought the George Floyd killing was terrible. Everyone agrees on this. However, my first suspicion that something was a bit off with the whole movement was when I realized everyone saying something to the effect of, “If you say silent, you are a racist.” I disagree. Strongly. One virtue-signaler on LinkedIn went so far as to tag me and a few of my podcast guests like Grant Cardone and Mark Manson in a post with our follower counts attached to our names whilst pressuring us to speak out. Seriously. Check it out.“This is not to shame anyone,” she says, “but I’m simply asking you to say something.” Actually, shaming people is exactly what you are doing, “Whiskey”.At the time, I planned on staying silent for fear of the woke mob trying to cancel me.I live as the best person I can be every day, loving everyone. I don’t feel the need to shout from the mountain top about how great and virtuous I am. I don’t feel the need to prove that I am virtuous because I operate through a place of love and kindness every single day and prove it through my actions. But apparently I’m “part of the problem” for not posting about it. I treat people of all races and genders with respect in real life, I am against racism, and I don’t have to tell people about it on social media. For that, I’m part of the solution.Anyway, after doing more research about the BLM organization, I see that many of the founders describe themselves as “trained Marxists.” Interesting. Then, seeing people violently protest in the streets and mindlessly tear down statues of historic figures made me realize these are anarchists who, in the words of one BLM leader in a Fox News interview, “will burn down this system and replace it.” And by the way, socialism is what they really want. Also interesting to note here is the first amendment, which states that the people have a right to peacefully assemble. The first amendment does not include the right to violently assemble. Make no mistake: Those who violently protest in the streets, killing people and looting small businesses in the process, are terrorists. But I digress. The content in this post and my conversation with Zuby is only the tip of the iceberg regarding the truth behind the Black Lives Matters organization. I encourage you to do your own research about Black Lives Matters. It’s scary. While I am wholeheartedly for the immutable fact that black lives do matter, I am wholeheartedly against the “Black Lives Matters” organization._____Zuby(@ZubyMusic) is a British rapper, podcast host, and author. The world tends to change faster than we can recognize it, and most of us know what it’s like to wish that we could have learned what we know now just 10 years earlier. The STARTedUP Foundation, an Indianapolis, Indiana-based educational innovation foundation, announced this week that it's making available free digital curriculum in the wake of widespread coronavirus school closures. In today’s episode, Curt Mercadante interviews Don Wettrick, president and CEO of the foundation. "What an opportunity we have. A lot of people, millions of students are going to have downtime and my fear was that they were just going to get on TikTok and watch 18 different people dance renegade the same damn way and the same damn time," said Don Wettrick, president of the foundation. "So instead I wanted to like, 'Hey, might you be introduced to a new way of thinking? Might you be introduced to some skills that we have kind of worked on and refined over the last five, six years in our class?' "And so yeah, in design thinking I had empathy for our end-user, which is either parents, teachers or students. And we decided to kind of give an abbreviated version of our class." Watching these students lose is difficult... and awesome by Don Wettrick
Year over year, Gallup student polls have revealed a disturbing, but unsurprising trend: student engagement in school declines steadily with each grade, and sharply from elementary to middle to high school. One of the proven contributors to this decline over time is the inability of many schools to build the strengths of each student and make learning relevant. This is especially true for the nearly 50% of polled students who have entrepreneurial ambitions. So what can schools do? If you ask Don Wettrick, CEO and Co-Founder of the StartEdUp Foundation, the answer can be found in the word purpose. For 20 years, Don has taught students to connect to a larger life purpose through innovation and entrepreneurship. What started in the classroom, has grown into a global network of renowned innovators, educators and entrepreneurs. The StartEdUp network is dedicated to helping teachers and students change education by building innovation and entrepreneurship into the fabric of the classroom. This episode is part of the disruption series. We're going to discover how incredible people disrupt their lives, their industries, and the world to create a powerful impact. Don Wettrick is an Innovation Specialist at Noblesville High School and author of Pure Genius: Building a Culture of Innovation and Taking 20% Time to the Next Level. He is disrupting the education system and teaching the next generation of entrepreneurs. Don teaches a class called Innovation and Open-Source Learning. They explore how to network, how to collaborate with intelligent people, how to market, and so much more. Businesses have been launched from his classroom. In one year, four patents were filed. The class has their own methodology. They call it R.O.T.H. I.R.A. Realization – Related to flow states, realization often comes about through movement. They start the school day by walking and talking. Open Discussion – The thoughts generated through realization will fade if they aren't discussed. Tussling – “I love a good fight.” Debate challenges people to think. Homogeneous Grouping – Kids split off to collaborate on the same projects, but coming from different perspectives. Ideation & Prototyping – “We jokingly call this the difference between December 31st and January 15th.” It's fun to brainstorm, but it's hard to actually do it. Reflect – Every project is two weeks, because that gives you enough time to know whether or not you are interested in the subject. Adjustment – This loops back to the ROTH for Realization #2. Don started the class because he didn't see any passion for learning – or much of anything – in his students. They were being churned through a system that destroyed their interest in learning. Not only is the current educational paradigm passionless, it's just old. As a culture and a society, we are moving exponentially faster outside of education. What did your phone look like five years ago? Vastly different. What did your public high school look like in 1980? Roughly the same. “Here's the cruel joke we're playing on a lot of our students: we're preparing you for a future that used to exist in 1970.” Why is education innovating so slowly? We still measure success by test scores. You get into college largely based on your SAT score. They're accepting the kids who are best at not taking risks. We reward memorization far more than creativity. Some teacher unions have pushed back (not all). Don can't disrupt the entire educational system on his own. If you are a parent, student, or teacher and you want to change something about your local school system, Don will help. You can head to StartEdUpInnovation.com for a podcast, consulting, teacher training, and all the core services necessary to start and strive with new educational initiatives. -- Don't be a podcast junkie… Resources: Connect with Don & his class: https://twitter.com/DonWettrick?lang=en (Twitter) | Facebook Learn more & Listen to the StartEdUp Podcast Pure Genius: Building a Culture of Innovation and Taking 20% Time to the Next Level by Don Wettrick TEDTalk - “The Puzzle of Motivation” by Dan Pink The Art of People by Dave Kerpen -- We are also brought to you by the Lawton Marketing Group, a full service advertising and design agency serving companies and entrepreneurs at all levels.
