Kris Schultz - From Merch Slinger to Bonafide Singer!

To the best of my knowledge, Kris Schultz is the second“merch slinger” I've met that went on to pursue a lyrical life as a troubadour in her own right.  My first experience was with Texas songwriter Kayla Ray as she first visited KC slinging merch for Jason Eady.  I love Kris' trajectory…. check this out.  Growing up in Topeka, Kansas, Kris was obsessed at an early age with the country songs of heartbreak and loss on the jukebox at a bar she visited regularly with her parents.  At an early age, she showed promise in several sports, especially the field part of track and field eventually accepted a scholarship to throw Javelin at Kansas State University, where she majored in Radio/Television Journalism.  While competing in the Texas Relays during her college career, she fell in love with Austin, TX.  And soon moved there with only a box of books & CDs, a small stereo, and a bag of clothes.  She walked into the city-ran Austin Music Network TV channel, asked for an internship, and soon was spending her days proof-checking videos of local music and taking in every note. But she still hadn't thought of playing music herself. After years assisting musicians as merch slinger, roadmanager and van driver, but never playing or singing herself, Kris eventually  acquired a guitar and began writing songs. She released her full-length album, Standard Issue Heart, inOctober 2021, has played such legendary venues as The Saxon Pub and Cactus Café in Texas, toured in the Midwest, Southwest and Southeastern US, has been featured in the live performance series “Songs In Places.”  Kris recently found herself in the Heartland and we connected to make an appearance on the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show happen.   Enjoy this performance and conversation with Austin transplant Kris Schultz.  Tasty Brew Music Radio Show "Showcasing the best of Americana/Roots Music in andfrom the Heartland!”Fridays 10 AM to Noon CST on 90.1FM KKFI Kansas CityCommunity Radio !!Since 2010, spinning a “tasty brew” of Americana/Bluegrass/Country/Roots Music… empowering the art of the song! Sometimes, the one thing you want to happen the most is often the best thing that never happened. And while it can be difficult to see in the moment, hang in there and have faith because life will surprise you in ways you can't yet see. My guest, Trey Hardee, knows this all too well. He's experienced countless setbacks and moments in life that didn't seem to be going his way. But without them, he never would have become "the world's greatest athlete." His accomplishments as a track & field athlete are quite remarkable… Trey is a two-time Olympian, two-time World Champion, two-time U.S. Champion, three-time Texas Relays winner, an NCAA Champion, a four-time All-American, former NCAA Record holder, and 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the decathlon. Pretty good for a guy who didn't even take up track and field until his junior year of high school… which, by the way, wouldn't even have happened if he hadn't been cut from his basketball team. In this episode, Trey offers up priceless advice for anyone who has big dreams to succeed in life. We talk about his journey to becoming an Olympic athlete, his comeback after a severe elbow injury, and the smart steps he took to turn his earned income as an athlete into cash-flowing assets. That and a whole lot more! Free Gift: Get Free Workout Video from Trey! This gift is perfect for those of you who do a lot of traveling. This is a rise for him in the draft charts is well deserved as he's a player who is versatile and impactful in the run and pass. Coppin State's MBB future looked bright after a Cinderella run in the MEAC tournament resulting in a MEAC finals appearance. They were even returning a lot of players because the team was so young. In the most ambitious week of content, perhaps in Pawdcast history, we kick it off by talking with Olympic gold medalist and Houston Cougar Track & Field Head Coach Leroy Burrell. The 3 of us discuss the current T&F season, what went into building this team and much, much more. Also, on the subject we talk about yet another incredible performance by the Coogs in the Outdoor T&F season- this time at the Texas Relays. We also talk about a tough 1-3 week for UH baseball, what's been ailing the Cougar hardballers and a difficult, perhaps season-defining week of games to come. Staying with bat/ball sports, we look at a similarly difficult week for the softball team and pivotal week to come. The Tennis team nears the end of the regular season and we take a quick look at the immediate slate, plus the impending postseason and a big Senior Day win. FINALLY, we do a Men's & Women's Golf Update to close out a jam packed episode!
