Vandalism has probably been going on since the first unwanted cave painting. As kids grow up, they test the waters and push the envelope to see what they can get away with. At that age we all rebelled in one way or another to assert independence. On the other side, humans have a pack-mentality. We all want to be part of a community. …but sometimes we pick the wrong community. Now combine these thoughts and impulses in a growing mind and you can understand how malicious mischief can be the result. If I am fighting to stand out and show my independence from one group, it is easy to connect with others feeling the same way. Other reason for this behavior may include initiation, self-expression, or a dare. Unacceptable conduct may be a way to impress others, an act of boredom, peer-pressure, or revenge. The similarities all tend to lean toward rebelling against some to find favor in others. And with the quick response and need for attention, that social media offers, it is easy to see why there seems to be an explosion in bad behavior and poor judgement. As parents, mentor, and friends there are a few things that we should be looking for and doing to prevent and stop vandalism, malicious mischief, devious licks. And it all starts with BACON! When I was high school, I remember the administration locking all the student bathrooms in an effort to get kids to stop smoking in school. It made for some interesting and difficult days. Recently, school administrators across the country have had to lockdown school bathrooms for a different reason. This time, the problem is disappearing mirrors, soap dispensers, towel holders, and even toilets as students engage in the latest TikTok challenge known as the devious licks challenge. To meet the challenge, students were initially posting videos of themselves vandalizing and stealing items stolen from their school bathrooms. Now, the challenge has ramped up as they steal from other areas of the school, taking signs, desks, and other fixtures while posting those videos with the #deviouslicks. For Christian parents, our role is to be aware of this trend, to teach our kids the way and will of God regarding stealing, and to respond to what they're posting online.
Devious Licks has only been the latest online trend turning our students into pod people. Online media has also lead to a spate of “domestic terrorism” “jokes” students think are “funny” and which send them to “jail.”

“Devious Licks” is the newest trend to hit the social media platform TikTok this school year. Like most viral crazes this one took off with youth, mainly boys, but definitely in the wrong direction. The term “ hitting a lick” means to successfully steal or rob someone without repercussions or retaliation. Students hit licks by stealing or vandalizing items from schools, like trashing bathrooms, stealing soap dispensers, and taking things off teacher's or principal's desks without their permission. They would then post their successful lick on TikTok using the hashtag #deviouslicks.TikTok has removed the challenge from its platform and denounces any videos associated with the hashtag #DeviousLicks. In a statement to Newsweek, a spokesperson for TikTok said: "We expect our community to stay safe and create responsibly, and we do not allow content that promotes or enables criminal activities. We are removing this content and redirecting hashtags and search results to our Community Guidelines to discourage such behavior."Students are being arrested and or suspended for vandalism of public property. Schools are cracking down on this trend, which is going strong even after it was removed from TikTok. Observing the challenge has given me two powerful insights. Number one: Students are influenced by social media more than we in education are able to address. Number two: Students are motivated to commit a crime and post it on social media for social recognition.
