Ever wonder what its like to train a dog that cant hear? NOT a dog that elects not to listen. But a dog that truly cannot hear. How big of a strain, if any, would it pose on your training approach? Ashley Easterday proved all of the trainers that have been crying from the rooftops for decades that you dont have to talk dogs to train them. Ashley adopted, trained, and hunts with a completely deaf English Setter that found his way from Michigan all the way to Nevada to live out his upland hunting dream! -------------------- Presented By: Standing Stone Supply | Check out their step by step Online Courses and Use Code 'GDIY' to save 15% onX Hunt Maps | Use Code 'GDIY20' to save 20% Upland Gun Company | Check out their online gun builder and construct your dream gun today! Hannah & Kyle Peterson are a match made with a shared love of dog training, and then bird dogs in grouse country. In this episode they share their journey into dog training in very separate realms and how they eventually met, married, and now are growing a family, all while chasing English Setters through the grouse woods hunting and in Cover Dog trials. Both have taken an active role in the Minnesota Grouse Dog Association and are leading the charge to get more folks involved in the sport. Hannah and Kyle also share their differing opinions of male and female dog personalities, whether a champion means more when it's achieved multiple times over, and much more. This is a fun one! There is a quiet, almost sacred trust between a hunter and his dog, a bond built through time and shared experiences. This bond is especially strong with the English Setter, a breed known for its grace, movement and excellent hunting instincts. The setter understands the land well, able to feel the wind and notice the smallest changes in the environment. What really makes this dog special, though, is how it connects with its owner. There's a silent communication between them, a trust so deep that the dog seems to understand not just the hunt but the calm rhythm of its...Article Link
So how English is the English setter? In some ways, the answer is ‘not very much.' In terms of numbers, looks and working style the breed is now more American, more Italian, more international than it is English. However, the English setter is, and always will be, quintessentially English. Refined over time by brilliant, industrious people, the English setter, like the English language, is a practical, elegant, and highly adaptable product of a small island nation that conquered the world.
Craig Koshyk, author of Pointing Dogs, Volume Two: The British and Irish Breeds, explores the unlikely story of how the Pointer rose to fame over the English Setter in America. At the time, this was something no one in the field trial circuit ever imagined possible, and before long, the Pointer dominated trialing. This is a story of culture, changing times, and America's continued efforts to advance everything they put their hands on.
“Suddenly into the middle of the coterie of breeders a bombshell was flung, so startling as to cause a violent upheaval of all the old theories, and a complete revolution in setter breeding, the effects of which have lasted to the present day.” —Walter Baxendale Walter Baxendale's “bombshell” was a man named Edward Laverack, now universally regarded as the father of the modern English Setter. Little is known about his early life, but as a young man, Laverack was apparently a shoemaker's apprentice, but where he worked and for whom is not clear. According to Robert Armstrong in All Setters, Laverack “spent his youth in Hawick, a town in the Southern Uplands of Scotland, but at the age of 17, not liking it after he had been there some time, he ran away.”
He and his dogs are NAVHDA versatile champions several times over ... and those dogs are English Setters. It's one testament to this guy's training acumen, passion for dogs and bird hunting. Curt Fry is also a hunt test judge, clinician, hardcore grouse and woodcock hunter. We do a deep dive into steadying a bird dog from start to finish: objectives, tools, and strategy. His views on water work and dog handling are of value to anyone with a hunting dog. Curt also offers hunting strategies and tactics and finding more land to hunt. We review the various types of hunt tests and field trials and why bird hunters benefit from participating. Curt even has suggestions on where to find training birds. "Road Trip" covers one of my top-five states; and listeners chime in on why sometimes it's a good idea to use different loads in each barrel. Setters are incredible dogs that offer a wide diversity of type, hunting tendencies, and coat colors. Although some may be harder or softer than others, and some pups may be slightly more hesitant to retrieve, there are two constants that remain regardless of breed or strain: their beauty and amazing companionship in the field and at home. Llewellin Setters have a bit of a complicated history. Richard Purcell-Llewellin, a figure in the iconic book The Setter, is the father of the Llewellin Setter, dating back to their early years in England. Regardless of their past, there is a strong modern appreciation for Llewellin Setters today. Crystal Powell, the secretary for the National Llewellin Gun Dog Club (NLGDC) and co-owner of Sinking Fork Llewellins, and Paint River Setters' Kyle Warren have offered in-depth insights about this strain of English Setters and generously shared their knowledge of this impressive, eye-catching dog.
Cole Cushman doesn't sell outdoor gear, but he does sell something that most of us tend to forget. Gun & Trophy insurance may be the last thing on our minds before a trip. Cole walks us through the simple and inexpensive process. And of course we dig into his English Setter that he will never forget.
This podcast episode features an in-depth discussion with Craig Koshyk, a bird hunter, lover of hunting dogs and the author of 'Pointing Dogs Volume 1 and 2'. The conversation covers the origins, evolution, and nuances of pointing dogs, shedding light on the differences between European and North American practices. Craig recounts his extensive research and travels, offering insights into the history, breed traits, and nuances of hunting with pointing dogs. Furthermore, the episode delves into Craig's writing journey, the challenges of crafting his books with authenticity, and his upcoming projects focusing on retrievers, spaniels, and water dogs. Highlighting informative tales, such as an interview with a geneticist in a communist setting and the intricacies of documenting dog breeds like the English Setter, this episode serves as a resource for hunters, dog enthusiasts, and readers interested in the meticulous world of pointing dogs and their representation around the world. Tonight we have the pleasure of welcoming back our buddy, Kyle Warren, from Paint River Setters. We had Kyle on the show a few episodes ago and felt like we didn't get enough of him so he is back and we talk for a while about anything and everything. We begin the show discussing grouse hunting, what's great about it, what trees to look for, types of covers and the difference between lake states and NY hunting. All of that is basically enough educational content for one episode but we keep talking through what birds eat and when, the type of gear Kyle has punished over the years, finding covers, using onX and other maps and then we rapid fire some fun questions at him. Take some notes, there's a lot to digest in this one. Kyle is a fantastic storyteller and the man knows more about grouse, and good grouse dogs, than anyone I've ever met. A big thank you to Kyle for hanging out with us and trading a few stories. If you're looking for some more information about Kyle, his dogs or grouse hunting... check him out at the link above. The English Setter was America's first bird dog. And rightly so; they're known for being incredible hunting partners regardless of the terrain or quarry. As a result, they have a long history in North America, and evidence of that can be found in classic upland bird hunting texts like The Upland Shooting Life by George Bird Evans. However, this dog breed was originally developed across the Atlantic Ocean in England. Rather ironically, the more time passes, the less English the English Setter has become. “Wildly popular in some regions, more or less unknown in others, they face extinction in their native land,” says Craig Koshyk in his book Pointing Dogs Volume Two: The British and Irish Breeds. Over 15,000 pups are born in Italy each year, and only 250 are born in England. Italy, France, and Norway have taken the English Setter as a breed and ran with it, and their “influence on the development of the breed cannot be overstated,” said Koshyk.

With portraits of iconic creatures such as mammoths, horses, wolves, and bison, Floresdescribes the evolution and historical ecology of North America like never before. English Setter
To the chronic pain and hospice patient communities: I have lived my life in MN growing up the youngest of five. My Mom was trained as a nurse but she was a stay at home Mom. I graduated high school in 1976 and got my BS in Animal Science at the U of MN. I started graduate school but never finished. I have spent the last 25 years of my life devoted to breeding and showing English Setter dogs. I live by myself in Minneapolis. My health issues started with knee surgery in college and I had ductal carcinoma at age 27. Sadly I opted for implants and they caused many issues. I went onto full time disability at age 36. I've been on LTOT since 1998. When I was going through the month of testing to find out why I was short of breath I started thinking that if the news wasn't good at least I wouldn't have to worry about losing access to my meds. How crazy is that to see a terminal diagnosis as a blessing. When they finally figured out it was AML and I have the worst mutations possible I knew I would choose hospice right away. My first hospice company was horrible. Their doctor drew a line in the sand and she refused to prescribe my OxyContin, and instead gave me MS Contin and cut my MME by 12%. This put me into withdrawals. I was so sick from the meds. Even my pharmacist told the doctor that would put me into withdrawals. I fired that company and thankfully was put back on OxyContin. The new company has been bending over backwards to make sure I am as comfortable as I can be with the cancer that has spread to T11 and L3 and now my pelvis. I want to discuss end of life options, how we got to this place where even hospice patients are not guaranteed relief from their pain. It's a crazy time and I'm afraid if we don't start to see some change we will become an opioid free country as doctors will no longer be allowed to prescribe them. As a life long upland hunter that grew up in western Iowa Todd put his bird hunting on hold as he pursued his career and raised a family in eastern Iowa. A chance client invitation to participate in the Aiming for a Cure celebrity bird hunt reignited his love of upland hunting and gun dogs. Today in his retirement, Todd works guiding clients at Highland Hideaway Hunting in Riverside, Iowa with his setter, Asa, and is the current Vice President of the Aiming for a Cure Foundation.WebsiteFacebookSupport the show Please be sure to subscribe and leave a review. This episode is a string of topics requested from my subscribers that all sort of piggybacked off of each other. One person wanted to hear more about field trialing and my new puppy Maven. Someone else wanted to hear about how I fell out of love with protection sports. I wish we had had more time, we may come back with a part two. Especially on that last topic. When Douglas Spale, a Black man adopted into a mixed-race family from Nebraska, heard a request for more diverse role models in the upland hunting world during episode #86 of this very podcast, he answered the call. That's the premise of the recently released Pheasants Forever film “Ripples,” produced by Erik Petersen, father of an adopted Black son who made that original request for more diverse role models in the uplands. Host Bob St.Pierre chats with Spale and Petersen about their personal stories leading up to the film and how their families are now forever connected through a shared love of the uplands, bird dogs, and hunting. Episode Highlights: • Spale's black Labrador retrievers are featured prominently in the film, so it's a startling surprise for Bob to learn Spale is picking up an English Setter puppy next month. • Petersen and Spale talk about the portions of their story not seen on camera, the feelings of trepidation making the film, and the feedback they've each received since “Ripples” was released to the public on September 1, 2022. Thanks to Thorogood Boots for sponsoring Ripples.

I'm going to be honest, this episode is a hard one. I haven't recorded anything in a few weeks because I have been grieving. Two weeks ago, I lost my 11-year-old English Setter, Millie. If you know me or have been following me for a while, you know that my dog was a huge part of my life. I've had her since she was 9 weeks old and she has pretty much been my shadow since day one. I never could have imagined that the grief of losing her would be this great. You guys know that it's always my goal to always show up in a real and authentic way, so I wanted to share this incredibly difficult story with you to show you where I have been the last couple of weeks. So in today's episode of Leading Lady, I wanted to share my best advice for continuing to move forward and work on your business when you are in the midst of grief. The only constant in life is that everything is forever moving and changing and every day is a gift. Each day may present new challenges that we didn't expect but we have to keep moving forward. Gratitude is a powerful tool that we should all be using more. It feels good, heals the heart, and fills the soul. It's so important that you allow yourself to be sad and feel that grief because you need it in order to move forward. Tune in to hear more about processing your grief in a way that still moves you forward in your business.
