The Oxford High School shooter is charged with murder and terrorism. While the Oakland County Prosecutor makes her case to try him as an adult, it becomes undeniable that the shooter's parents bear some responsibility in the senseless murders of four teenagers. In a legal landmark, involuntary manslaughter charges are announced against Jennifer and James Crumbley. But Jennifer and James are nowhere to be found. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
When Jennifer and James Crumbley were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter this spring, it was the first time parents were convicted for a role in a school shooting. John Woodrow Cox, enterprise reporter for The Washington Post, joins host Krys Boyd to discuss his time embedded with the prosecutor who built the case against the parents of a son who killed four students at his high school – and what it means for future legal cases regarding the actions of minors. His article is “Guilty: Inside the high-risk, historic prosecution of a school shooter's parents.”
Hello everyone, I've missed you.Due to a confluence of factors which I won't waste time or energy going into here, we had a slightly longer hiatus than I expected, but we are back and I expect the content to be a little more regular going forward. This episode is meaningful for a number of reasons. First, I bring on my law partner, Bob Gottlieb of Robert C. Gottlieb and Associates, to discuss the issues surrounding the Crumbley case. Second, while we agree on some of the guideline principles, we do not see perfectly eye to eye on this prosecution. You asked for more viewpoint diversity and variety. I deliver. Third, this is truly a fascinating case because it revisits some of the topics we've discussed in previous episodes, but in a new way.In late November 2021, James and Jennifer Crumbley bought their 15 year old son, Ethan, a Sig Sauer pistol as an early Christmas present. In Oxford, Michigan, where they lived, this was not uncommon or out of the ordinary. Ethan took the requisite safety courses, went to the gun range with his mother, had no history of violence, and was not a problem at school.Regardless, a few days after the pistol was given to him as a gift (though still supposed to be locked in a safe by his parents), Ethan brought both the gun and ammunition to his high school, and killed four people.Ethan pleaded guilty in October 2022 to all the charges and was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole as a 16 year old. But the county prosecutor went on and charged his parents, Jennifer and James Crumbley with manslaughter for their role in facilitating the shooting. The prosecution argued that the parents knew, or at least should have known, that giving their mentally disturbed 15 year old a gun would result in a school shooting. We tackle the question of when a parent can be liable for the acts of their child, especially if the child has already been found fully liable for those acts themselves, and to what degree a parent needs to be fully aware of what is going on their child's life. When does negligent parenting become accessory to homicide?Paul and Bob hope you enjoy the conversation.
What a 15-year-old student unleashed on Oxford High School in 2021, didn't just land himself in prison, he took his mother and father down with him. Jennifer and James Crumbley became the first parents convicted in a US mass shooting, each receiving at least 10 years in prison. Speaking with Sins of the Child podcast creators Jessica Lowther and Cooper Moll, we aim to unpick some of the most complex questions within this story about community, school responsibility and the role parents have in their children's lives. This week we discuss a controversial ruling in the Court that held James and Jennifer Crumbley criminally responsible in the Oxford School Shooting in Michigan. Their son, 15-year old Ethan Crumbley, killed four students on November 30, 2021. The gun Ethan had hidden is his backpack, was purchased four days earlier by his father. Do you agree with the Court's ruling? Has a precedent now been set to make parents more aware of gun safety in their home? This is the story of James and Jennifer Crumbley. www.texaswineandtruecrime.com
As James and Jennifer Crumbley awaited sentencing for their conviction for involuntary manslaughter, both sought to avoid jail. Their son Ethan Crumbley is serving life in prison for the school rampage where four were killed and seven others were injured. The gun used was given to the teen as a birthday present by his parents. James, convicted of involuntary manslaughter, asked the judge for "time served" and Jennifer asked the judge to let her serve her time on house arrest in a guest house at her attorney's home. Oakland County Prosecutor Marc Keast has recommended 10-to-15-year jail sentences for both Jennifer and her husband, James. While James was in jail, damning phone conversations surfaced in which Crumbley had allegedly threatened Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. In a call from October 9, 2023, five months before the trial, Crumbley says, “Yeah, Karen McDonald, you're going down. … Go ahead, record this call. Send it to Karen McDonald. Tell her how James Crumbley is going to f------ take her down." In a call on December 23, 2023, Crumbley says “There will be retribution, believe me." The threats were bad enough that Crumbley's jail communication privileges were revoked during his trial. Neither received the sentence they asked for. Ethan Crumbley was just 15 years old when he was arrested for killing four students and injuring several others in a shooting at Oxford High School in 2021. When investigators learned that his parents, Jennifer and James Crumbley, failed to prevent the deadly actions of their son, they were charged and eventually convicted of involuntary manslaughter – becoming the first parents in U.S. history to be held criminally responsible for their child's mass school shooting plot. A landmark ruling last week sentenced them both to 10 years in prison. In today's Headlines, Candice is joined by legal analyst Josh Ritter to discuss how Jennifer and James' negligence led to their sentences, and the impact this case could have on parents in the future.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Over the years, there had been allegations of abuse by other family members. In March 2024, Veronica was only able to see her children via supervised visits due to the allegations. On March 30, Veronica set out with Jilian Kelley to pick up her children to attend a birthday party. Jilian was an acquaintance who had been allowed by the court to supervise Veronica's visits with her children. The two women would never arrive to pick up the children. Their vehicle was found abandoned in a remote area. Pools of blood, a hammer and gun paraphernalia was found at the scene. Four people have now been arrested in relation to this case. They are Tad Cullum, Tifany Adams, Cole Twombly, and Cora Twombly. This case is a very tangled web - Tifany was Veronica's ex-mother-in-law. The newly released affidavit suggests that the women were murdered because Tifany was concerned that Veronica would soon be granted unsupervised visitation with the kids. Jennifer and James Crumbley were both sentenced to 10–15 years in prison on charges of involuntary manslaughter after the prosecution convinced the jury that the Crumbley's gross negligence enabled their son to commit a mass shooting at Oxford High School in 2021. Sentencing the parents of mass shooters is a relatively new concept for the courts. While the sentencing guidelines for this crime are typically seven years, the actual sentence Judge Cheryl Matthews handed down exceeded those guidelines, opting for a harsher-than-recommended punishment. Criminal defense attorney Jonna Spilbor joins the podcast to break down how this case marks a shift in standards for punishing guardians of mass shooters, why she feels that this case should not have been taken to criminal court, and shares her fears that this ruling will be a legal slippery slope. U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas is set to become the first cabinet member facing impeachment in over 100 years. The move has been met with enthusiasm from Senate Republicans. Now, it faces an unlikely path forward, with Senate Majority Leader Schumer reportedly looking at multiple procedural options to avoid or table these articles of impeachment. House Speaker Johnson revealed on Tuesday that they would plan on delivering articles to the Senate next week, showing the GOP is not done fighting for this trial. Senator Roger Marshall (R-K.S.) says not allowing the trial would be “a nuclear option for the Democrats.” He joins the podcast to explain why our border crisis can be traced back to Secretary Mayorkas and why he believes impeachment is necessary. In a landmark ruling, James and Jennifer Crumbley, parents of the Oxford High School shooter Ethan Crumbley, were each sentenced to 10-15 years in prison for their role in failing to prevent the tragic shooting that claimed the lives of four students in 2021. Appearing at the Oakland County Court, the Crumbleys sat close together but barely exchanged glances as their attorneys argued for lesser sentences. Impact statements from relatives of the victims, Madisyn Baldwin, Hana St. Juliana, Tate Myre, and Justin Shilling, were delivered before sentencing. "The ripple effects of both James and Jennifer's failures to act have devastated us all," expressed Justin's mother, Jill Soave, highlighting the anguish felt by the victims' families. This case marks the first instance in U.S. history where parents have been convicted for their alleged role in a mass school shooting. During the sentencing, Jennifer Crumbley spoke of her anguish since the tragic event, while James Crumbley became emotional, expressing empathy for the victims' families. However, defense attorneys argued for lesser sentences, citing time served and the absence of intent. Judge Cheryl Matthews emphasized the Crumbleys' failure to address concerns about their son's behavior, stating, "Opportunity knocked over and over again, louder and louder, and was ignored." Her decision reflects the gravity of their negligence in preventing the tragedy. Relatives of the victims recounted their pain and loss, expressing deep-seated resentment towards the Crumbleys. "The lack of compassion you've shown is outright disgusting," remarked Nicole Beausoleil, mother of Madisyn Baldwin, addressing Jennifer Crumbley directly. Others reflected on the irreplaceable void left by the loss of their loved ones. Steve St. Juliana, father of Hana St. Juliana, expressed his conviction that the Crumbleys deserved long sentences, emphasizing the enduring anguish caused by their actions. The sentencing marks a pivotal moment in the aftermath of the devastating school shooting, underscoring the importance of accountability and justice for the victims and their families. The Crumbleys were also ordered not to contact the victims' families, with considerations for a no-contact order between them and their son, Ethan Crumbley. The judge indicated that Ethan and James Crumbley would likely be housed separately within the Michigan Department of Corrections. As the community grapples with the aftermath of the tragedy, the sentencing of the Crumbleys serves as a stark reminder of the profound impact of their actions and the ongoing quest for healing and closure. When they went to the school to start their work, they were told there was no place for them. They were disappointed and looked for ways to fill their days. On April 1, 2014, Kris and Lisanne went for a hike on the El Pianista Trail. They were only planning to spend a few hours there and took no supplies with them. They headed onto the trail and were never seen alive again. Months later, some of their belongings were found, including their phones and a camera. Investigators determined that they had attempted to make emergency calls from their phones for days after the hike, but the calls never connected. There were many interesting photos found on the camera, including 90 photos taken in a short period, one week after they went missing. One photo was found to have been deleted from the camera and authorities have never been able to recover it. Some remains of Kris and Lisanne were eventually found. In a rare case, Jennifer Crumbley, the mother of Oxford High School shooter Ethan Crumble was convicted last month and could face up to fifteen years in prison for her role in the shooting. Prosecutors said she failed to warn authorities about threats her son had made. Now, Ethan's father, James Crumbley, is also on trial in Michigan for manslaughter. Shortly after James Crumbley's trial began, FOX News contributor and George Washington University Law Professor Jonathan Turley joined host Dave Anthony to discuss this unusual case and the legal questions it raises. Turley explained how the cases against the mother and father differed and explained why he is uncomfortable with the general idea of holding parents legally responsible for the violent actions of their children. We made edits for time and thought you might like to hear more about this complicated case. On today's FOX News Rundown Extra, you'll hear the entire FOX News contributor and George Washington University Law Professor Jonathan Turley. Jennifer Crumbley becomes the first parent in the United States to be found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for a mass school shooting committed by her son, Ethan. She was convicted of four counts of involuntary manslaughter and faces a maxium sentence of 60 years in prison. Prosecutors said Jennifer Crumbley knew her son was struggling with mental health issues. They alleged instead of getting him the help he needed, Jennifer and her husband, James Crumbley, bought Ethan the gun he later used in the attack. The prosecution also showed the Crumbleys were attempting to flee when they realized they were going to be charged in the crime. James Crumbley faces the same charges as his wife, on March 5. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (02/06/2024): 3:05pm- In a 57-page opinion, a three-judge panel from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit unanimously rejected Donald Trump's argument that presidential immunity legally shields him from criminal charges related to his challenging of the 2024 presidential election results. The judges wrote: "We cannot accept former President Trump's claim that a President has unbounded authority to commit crimes that would neutralize the most fundamental check on executive power—the recognition and implementation of election results. Nor can we sanction his apparent contention that the Executive has carte blanche to violate the rights of individual citizens to vote and to have their votes count." Trump has vowed to appeal the decision—which will mean the case will be heard by the full D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals or the U.S. Supreme Court. Jennifer Crumbley, whose son, Ethan, pleaded guilty to four counts of murder in the killings at Oxford High about 40 miles north of Detroit and is serving life in prison, lowered her head slightly but showed little other reaction as the verdict was read in an Oakland County courtroom. The judge set a sentencing date of April 9. Crumbley's husband, James Crumbley, will stand trial for the same charges in a separate trial next month.” You can read the full report here: https://www.wsj.com/us-news/mother-of-michigan-school-shooter-ethan-crumbley-found-guilty-of-manslaughter-ccd8bfff?mod=hp_lead_pos1 3:40pm- Country singer and songwriter Toby Keith has passed away at the age of 62 after a battle with stomach cancer. 3:55pm- Don't wish “The Greater Chris” a happy birthday… 4:05pm- According to reports, the House of Representatives is expected to hold a vote to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday—alleging that he has willfully refused to enforce existing U.S. border security laws. With only a slim majority in the House, it is uncertain whether Republicans will have enough votes to successfully impeach Mayorkas. 4:15pm- On Sunday, leadership in the U.S. Senate released the details of a bipartisan bill designed to reduce illegal border crossings, send $60 billion in military assistance to Ukraine, and $14.1 billion in aid to Israel. The 370-page bill mandates a border shutdown if more than 5,000 migrants unlawfully enter the U.S. in a single day. However, the shutdown cannot exceed 270 days in the bill's first year, 225 in the second year, and 180 days in the third year. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise has said the proposed “Senate border bill will not receive a vote in the House.” Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has echoed a similar sentiment—and announced the House will instead vote on a standalone bill later this week that will provide $14.3 billion of aid to Israel. Annie Karni of The New York Times notes: “By Monday evening, [Senate Minority Leader Mitch] McConnell was privately acknowledging that the measure had hemorrhaged support among Republicans, and recommending they move to block it unless Democrats agreed to debate it further and allow them to propose changes.” You can read more here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/05/us/politics/republicans-border-deal.html 4:40pm- In a 57-page opinion, a three-judge panel from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. However, it seems increasingly unlikely that the bill has enough support to even pass in the Senate let alone the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. During his address, President Biden blamed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for sabotaging the legislation by denouncing it in the press and on social media. 5:05pm- In a bombshell report from Tim Golden of ProPublica: “Years before Andrés Manuel López Obrador was elected as Mexico's leader in 2018, U.S. drug-enforcement agents uncovered what they believed was substantial evidence that major cocaine traffickers had funneled some $2 million to his first presidential campaign. According to more than a dozen interviews with U.S. and Mexican officials and government documents reviewed by ProPublica, the money was provided to campaign aides in 2006 in return for a promise that a López Obrador administration would facilitate the traffickers' criminal operations.” You can read the full report here: https://www.propublica.org/article/mexico-amlo-lopez-obrador-campaign-drug-cartels 5:20pm- While appearing on Fox News with Bret Baier, Rep. Chip Roy explained exactly why the proposed Senate border bill does not do enough to secure the U.S. Southern border—noting that children won't count towards the 5,000 migrants per day necessary to trigger an immediate border shutdown, which he fears may encourage child trafficking. 5:30pm- Would you pay $17.59 for a Big Mac meal at McDonald's? PLUS, why is the moon shrinking? 5:40pm- During a House hearing addressing allegations that the federal government partnered with Big Tech to censor speech online, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Jim Jordan (R-OH) revealed that email exchanges indicate the White House pressured Amazon to remove books that questioned the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines. 5:50pm- According to reports, the House of Representatives is expected to hold a vote to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday—alleging that he has willfully refused to enforce existing U.S. border security laws. Karoun Demirjian of The New York Times explains: “The G.O.P. can afford no more than two defections, and two Republicans—Tom McClintock of California, below pictured first, and Ken Buck of Colorado—are already committed nos. A handful of others are on the fence. But when asked if they had the votes to impeach, Speaker Mike Johnson said: ‘I believe we do.'” 6:05pm- On Sunday, leadership in the U.S. Senate released the details of a bipartisan bill designed to reduce illegal border crossings, send $60 billion in military assistance to Ukraine, and $14.1 billion in aid to Israel. Traditionally, the president participates in an interview prior to kickoff which is viewed by millions of people across the country. Upon hearing the news, former President Donald Trump posted to Truth Social: “Crooked Joe Biden has just announced that he will not be doing the big Super Bowl Interview. A great decision, he can't put two sentences together.
