New Zealanders who have lived in Australian detention centres say they would rather be in jail, citing brutal treatment and poor access to healthcare. A deportee, who is now in managed isolation in Auckland, Salu moved to Australia in 2008, when he was 15 years old. In 2019, he was handed a prison sentence of more than 12 months for assault, which made him eligible for deportation under Australia's contentious '501' policy. He was released on parole after eight months for good behaviour, but was immediately taken to a detention centre in Brisbane, before being moved to Christmas Island, where he has spent the last seven months. Salu told reporter Eva Corlett the conditions and treatment there were much worse than prison.

Daniel Clinton Fitzgerald, who has schizophrenia, was sentenced in 2018 for the assault. The public will be asked to vote yes or no to the End of Life Choice Act 2019 coming into force at this year's October 17 referendum. Thousands of home owners are slipping behind on their mortgages, with almost 250,000 payments missed since April. Reserve Bank data shows 10, 905 homeowners were in arrears at the end of the first week of August. Advocates working with young homeless people say the situation is at "crisis point", and it's likely to worsen in the wake of Covid-19. Maanaki Rangatahi - a collective of six groups - is petitioning the government, calling for targeted research and better resourcing for youth homelessness. Lifewise, which has some supported living units for 16 to 24 year olds, is one of the groups. They've turned away 200 people in the last year. Eighty percent of the rangitahi they speak to are Māori. Its youth housing manager Aaron Hendry told housing reporter Eva Corlett, young people often go from time in state care or the justice system straight to the streets.

Survey reveals Kiwis want to strengthen ties with Asia

New Zealanders are increasingly feeling its important to strengthen ties with Asia, especially in the wake of Covid-19. It comes at a time when more New Zealanders than ever before say they know a fair amount about Asia. Asia New Zealand Foundation's annual report into how we percieve Asia found that 79 percent of respondents think it's important to develop political, economic and social ties with the region. That figure is up from 67 percent before the pandemic. The most significant associations New Zealanders had with the word 'Asia' was China, as well as food and travel, as well as concerns over Asia's response to the climate crisis. The foundation's executive director Simon Draper spoke to our reporter Eva Corlett about the survey's findings.
