Ramblings
Donegal with Nikki Bradley - Adaptive Adventurer and Amputee

Ramblings

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 4, 2024 24:20

In the first of two episodes recorded in the Republic of Ireland, Clare travels to Moyle Hill in County Donegal to meet adventurer and motivational speaker, Nikki Bradley. Diagnosed with a rare bone cancer at just 16 years of age, Nikki (now in her 30s) has defied expectations by living a very active life. She was the first person on crutches to climb four Irish mountain peaks, which took her 32 hours. She scaled the Sólheimajökull glacier in Iceland, and has completed the Fan Dance, one of the toughest endurance challenges in the UK including two ascents of Pen y Fan. Her latest enormous challenge has been to undergo a very unusual leg amputation. The damage caused by the cancer led to two hip replacements in her twenties, but her pain and discomfort continued so ultimately her medical team suggested a procedure known as a rotationplasty. Her upper leg was removed, and her lower leg was turned 180 degrees, raised and attached to the top of her thigh to become her ‘new' upper leg. Her foot faces backwards at knee height, with the idea that it acts as the knee joint itself. It's been emotionally very difficult coming to terms with her change of appearance and the pain associated with the procedures and rehab. But, in characteristic spirit, she has continued to push forward and after many months of recovery is now back walking again. Producer: Karen Gregor Presenter: Clare Balding

Born a ‘pad brat' in Paderborn, Gareth began to follow his father's journey, and joined junior leaders, but quickly discovered it wasn't the career for him. Finding himself in a lucrative, successful career in sales built Gareth his dream life, with expensive cars and holidays, before an accident at home changed his life… Gareth was diagnosed with epilepsy and his life began to unravel, losing his job, driving licence, and his wife. A rollercoaster journey left Gareth sectioned after being found in the local woods after a seizure. It was his childhood passion for the outdoors that would be his key to overcoming the adversity he faced. Starting a YouTube channel and developing a passion for outdoor challenges, like the infamous Fan Dance, Gareth has gone on to complete incredible physical feats, and has written a book about his life, ‘What The Ruck Just Happened' Follow This Podcast To Be Notified Of New Episodes, Visit Our Social Media Platforms & YouTube Channel For More Bonus Content, And Listen Live To Our Radio Station: Listen Live: https://www.forceradio.live/ Visit Our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@forceradiohq

Some songs you enjoy in the background while others take up residence in your bones. Sam Phillips' music is in the latter category. She was Christian pop artist Leslie Phillips until she outgrew those constraints and, as Sam, began releasing such transcendent songs as “Holding On to the Earth” and “I Need Love” and wonderful albums such as the spirited The Indescribable Wow, the tour de force Martinis and Bikinis and the intimate Fan Dance. What threat did she make to get released from her Christian label? How did she wind up playing a mute villain in Die Hard with a Vengeance? How is she still searching for the euphoric? She's as perceptive and spellbinding in conversation as in song.

This is part of my archived podcast when I did interviews for obstacle course racing. The reason I have added this episode is because of the grit and determination it took Ken to survive. I had the privilege of interviewing Ken Jones the author of Darkness Descending. Ken went on a winter trip to Romania and got caught up in an avalanche which resulted in horrific injuries. He had to crawl, hobble and survive without food for 3 days before he got to a small village and was able to get help. He survived after multiple surgeries and created the successful Fan Dance endurance event in the Brecon Beacons which I attended for a number of years. Its a brutal event which I loved and hated at the same time.

Interviews by Brainard Carey

Carrie Moyer. Photo credit: © Girl Ray, 2016 Carrie Moyer is an artist and writer known for her sumptuous paintings which explore and extend the legacy of American Abstraction, while paying homage to many of its groundbreaking female figures, among them Georgia O’Keeffe, Helen Frankenthaler and Elizabeth Murray. In equal measure abstract and representational, Moyer’s work proposes a kaleidoscopic worldview that embraces the sensual as much the rational. Playful logo-like silhouettes — vessels, towers, portals, meteorological phenomena, plant life, animal and human forms — demarcate arched prosceniums or abstract fields of color. These flattened archetypes and cheeky reference points often perform as compositional rigging around which flow cascades of paint, glitter and light. Whether invoking the natural or constructed world, inventive paint handling and succulent color seem to tempt all of the viewer’s senses, from sight to touch to taste (perhaps even sound!). The resulting spaces — lush and transporting — are uniquely Moyer’s own.Moyer’s work has been exhibited throughout the US and Europe. Her paintings were featured in the 2017 Whitney Biennial. Previous museum shows include a traveling survey, Carrie Moyer: Pirate Jenny, that originated at the Tang Museum, Saratoga Springs, NY; and Interstellar, at the Worcester Art Museum, MA (2012). Between 1991-2008, Moyer and photographer Sue Schaffner collaborated as Dyke Action Machine!, a public art project that humorously dissected mainstream advertising through the insertion of lesbian imagery. Moyer’s writing has appeared in periodicals such as Art in America, Artforum, the Brooklyn Rail and monographs on Louise Fishman and Nancy Grossman. She has received awards from the Guggenheim and Joan Mitchell Foundations, Anonymous Was a Woman, and Creative Capital among others. Moyer attended Pratt Institute (BFA), Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College (MFA) and the Skowhegan School of Art. She is of the Director of MFA Program in Studio Art at Hunter College. Moyer is represented by DC Moore Gallery in New York City. The collaborative exhibition mentioned in the interview can be explored through this link to the Portland Museum. Carrie Moyer, “Fan Dance at the Golden Nugget,” 2017. Acrylic, glitter on canvas.
