Justin Amaral first made a name for himself touring the country in the jam band scene, leading to shows with Mike Gordon of Phish and a profile in Modern Drummer's (April, 2004) “On The Move” column. After world tours with alt-country guit-steel legend Junior Brown, Justin relocated to Nashville and quickly became first call for many of Nashville's finest players and songwriters including Paul Burch, Tim Carroll, Fats Kaplin, Jon Byrd, Charles Butler and the late, great David Olney. In addition, Justin has performed and recorded with Jim Lauderdale (Late Night with Conan O'Brien), Laura Cantrell, Michelle Wright, The Wild Iris Brass Band feat. Jeff Coffin, Dennis Crouch, Milan Miller, Mike Farris, Layton Howerton, Tommy Womack, Chris West and many more. Justin maintains an active performing and recording schedule working at some of Nashville's most prestigious studios like Blackbird, Creative Workshop and the Hen House as well as venues like The Bluebird, The 5Spot, The Exit/In and Roberts Western World.  In 2024 Justin released a collection of traditional hymns re-imagined as world beat instrumental duets called LIFE IN GROOVELAND - The Hymnal. Each track features a different instrumentalist. In this episode, Justin talks about:    Heeding the call to do your own thing    The origin of his new record: LIFE IN GROOVELAND - The Hymnal    Creating your own opportunities    Jump starting the creative process    The inspiration of Drum and Fife    Practicing movement and visualization as a technique

Today I had the pleasure of talking with Ever More Nest (specifically lead singer/songwriter Kelcy Mae). Ever More Nest's new album, "Out Here Now" was produced by Neilson Hubbard. With contributions from multi-instrumentalists Will Kimbrough, Fats Kaplin and bassist Dean Marold, it's hard to go wrong. I really love this new album. It's so soulful and emotive. I highly recommend it as well as Ever More Nest's 2018 album, "The Place That You Call Home." I loved getting to learn more about Ever More Nest, their story and their music and I hope you do too. On this episode, a conversation I had with one of the most respected and acclaimed contemporary Canadian songwriters. He's able to write songs that convey simple thoughts and ideas in beautiful, poetic ways. He's written about love and sorrow and joy powerfully and perfectly. David Francey (www.davidfrancey.com) was born in Scotland, but his family moved to Canada when he was 12. The value and importance of hard work was instilled in him early. Until the release of his debut album, Torn Screen Door, which was released in 1999 when Francey was already in his 40s, he was a carpenter and construction worker, working on job sites, rail yards, and far flung places across Canada. All the while, he would make up melodies and words in his head, content to sing them to himself and maybe a few close friends. At the urging of his wife, artist Beth Girdler (bethgirdler.smugmug.com or www.bethgirdlerbees.com), he started performing and made an album of some of the best songs he'd come up with. Since Francey wasn't much of a guitar player at the time, he hooked up with Quebec acoustic guitar master Dave Clarke (daveclarke.ca), who provided tasteful, melodic, and interesting instrumentation. The reaction was immediate. Within a year, he was in demand at the biggest folk festivals in Canada. After three strong albums, Dave Clarke stepped back to dedicate himself to his solo albums and his band Steel Rail. Francey went on to make an album with Nashville heavyweights Kieran Kane, Kevin Welch, and Fats Kaplin. That was all within the first 5 years of his recording career, when Francey was on the road far more than he was home, as he was touring the world and taking his songs and stories all over the world. Prior to the release of his 2013 album, So Say We All, Francey fell into a deep depression, brought on by the death of one of his closest friends. It was writing, and the love of his family that pulled him out, and he's been honest about his struggles with depression since then in songs, poems, paintings, and conversation. The wear and tear of nearly 20 years of constant touring finally caught up with Francey around the time of his 2018 album, The Broken Heart of Everything. He'd been struggling with his voice, but being the dedicated worker that he is, he just pushed through. It really started to fail him during a Canadian east coast tour and he knew that he'd pushed it too far. He drove straight home and resigned himself to the fact that he wouldn't be able to sing for quite some time. He dedicated himself to his other hobby, painting. The terrible irony is that he was just preparing to resume some of his tour dates in early 2020, before COVID-19 put a stop to those plans. For the meantime, David Francey remains at home with his family, where he paints and writes songs and poetry until he can get back up on stage and do what he does best once again. Tune in to the July 4th edition of Tell the Band to Go Home, where David will talk about the new material that he's been working on, as well as introduce us to some of his favourite songwriters at the moment, including Terra Spencer and Chris Coole. Music Credits: David's albums are available at his website and on iTunes. "Lonely Road" is from the album The Broken Heart of Everything. "Harm" is from the album So Say We All. "Paper Boy" is from the album Far End of Summer. "Broken Glass" is from the album Skating Rink.

Kevin's songs have been covered by a long string of artists over the last 40 years, including Roger Miller, Waylon Jennings, Patty Loveless, The Judds, Bobby Bare, Ray Price, The Highwaymen (Willie, Waylon, Cash and Kristofferson), Linda Ronstadt, Solomon Burke, Garth Brooks, to name a few. In 2018-19 Chris Stapleton recorded and released his song “Millionaire”, which stayed on the Billboard Chart for over 50 weeks and made it to #2 and had over 5.7 million views on YouTube. Kevin came out from behind the curtain in 1990 and recorded two records for Warner/Reprise, Kevin Welch and Western Beat. In the mid-90s he co-founded the Americana flagship indie label Dead Reckoning Records, and released Life Down Here On Earth, Beneath My Wheels, and Millionaire, which was cut in Denmark and Nashville with the band known then as The Danes. Along with label partner Kieran Kane came 11/12/13: Live in Melbourne, and then three successive records with Kieran Kane and Fats Kaplin, You Can't Save Everybody, Lost John Dean, and Kane Welch Kaplin. The trio were nominated two years in a row for Best Group by the Americana Music Association. In 2008 he relocated to the Hill Country of Texas and made one record outside of the Dead Reckoning fold for his friend Jimmy LaFave, A Patch Of Blue Sky, and later, back to Dead Reckoning with the most recent, Dust Devil. He offers one on one songwriting sessions and workshops, to find out more about opportunities to learn from and work with Kevin, check out his website. This week's guest is incredibly creative Telecaster-slinger, Jim Campilongo. I've been trying to get Jim on the show for a while now and it finally worked out. Jim is one of the finest modern players associated with the Telecaster and has worked for decades on playing and composing music around the New York and Bay Areas. While getting to be known as one of the finest musicians in a city full of great musicians, he chose to mostly stick close to home and hone his craft with weekly gigs in New York for almost 20 years! He has released a number of incredible albums with his trio, and lately also with the group Honeyfingers. Jim also had a band with Norah Jones for a while called The Little Willies. Campilongo is also a veteran teacher and has a wide range of amazing material on his site to delve into. Please check out jimcampilongo.com for more on that and what he's up to. Meanwhile, we have a couple of callers at the beginning, including my old friend Fats Kaplin, who called in to talk a bit about John Prine on the week after his passing from COVID complications. We continue to welcome callers to talk about the virus and how it's affecting your life in the music scene or as a fan of music. Call and leave a message at 615-375-6318 to be heard on an upcoming show. If you want to skip straight to the interview, it begins at about the 15-minute mark. The Third Men Podcast is proud to present this all-new extended interview with legendary recording artist Fats Kaplin! Fats has been a familiar face (and sound!) for Third Man Records over the past decade, playing on a host of blue room series singles, both Jack White solo albums, both Jack White solo tours and much much more! But Fats' career doesn't start with Third Man - the fat man has had a long, storied musical journey which began with his first LP release in 1975 alongside Roy Bookbinder and which ranges from stints with the Tom Russell Band to Kane Welch Kaplin to Pure Prairie League to name but a few. From his beginnings as a rambling fiddle player on the streets of New York as a young man in the late 60's, to playing arenas alongside Jack White, we cover it all and get to the bottom of everyone's go-to theremin specialist and pedal steel maestro! We here at the Third Men podcast would like to thank Fats for stopping by and being so wonderful and generous with his time - it was a treat interviewing him and we hope you all enjoy it as much as we did!

Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Welcome to episode 14 of the podcast, where we welcome a Nashville veteran to the show. Fats Kaplin is his name, and when not performing slight of hand magic, Fats is one of the most in-demand sideguys around. He plays fiddle, mandolin, pedal steel, banjo, harmonica, dobro, guitar, oud, button accordion and I’m sure a bunch of other stuff. And he plays them really well. Fats has been in Music City for a long time, but he grew up in New York and got a gig as a youngster with Roy Bookbinder, a fantastic blues and ragtime player. Fats went on to play for years with Roy, and then the Tom Russel Band, touring the world. He moved to Nashville in the early 90’s and hooked up with Keiran Kane and Kevin Welch to form the Dead Reckoners, who were sort of a collective of great songwriters and instrumentalists. He’s played with tons of artists, and in the last few years ended up getting a gig in Jack White’s band, with whom he now performs and records regularly. Fats is active around Nashville and plays with his wife Kristi Rose regularly. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Fats quite a bit oiver the last coupe of years and he’s a great improvisor and an incredibly receptive musician to play with. I feel like we’re sort of kindered spirits in our weird esoteric musical tastes and we always have a good time working on music together. Fats and I talked about his whole history with all of those artists, growing up in New York, recording and working in Europe with Tom Russell through to getting the gig in Jack White's band and tells some stories about going on the tour with the male and female versions of Jack's band. Then at the end, Fats brings out the violin and rips up the fiddle as only he can. Enjoy my conversation with Fats Kaplin!

Godfathers of Americana. Kieran Kane, Kevin Welch and Fats Kaplin have collaborated on two highly satisfying albums as a trio but now that they are joined by Kane's son Lucas on drums, they're ready to get serious about being a band.
