The Belgian Bruce Lee talks with Andrew Staton direct from the UK Martial Arts Show 2023 He reveals; How Bruce Lee inspired him to start training? How did he pioneer training on his own? How did he find his way into movies? As a teenager, Sifu Mark Stas started his martial arts training alone in his room, before joining his first ‘official' course in 1984 with Karate Shotokan which he practised for many years. Because he loved kicking techniques so much, it was suggested he practise Taekwondo and so switched to this Korean martial art. He competed successfully during his youth and participated at a World Championship in Italy. He got an introduction in Bruce Lee's Jun Fan, before discovering after a few months a Chinese martial art, which changed his life, thanks to the great fighter and instructor Sifu Salih Avci in Aachen (Germany). Convinced of the efficiency, he soon decided to live and study for many years in that country with the best European Wing Tsun schools. Training and teaching in the ML-MAF, his dedication and passion led him to create his Wing Flow System after more than 34 years of martial arts practice. His performance in Italy at one of the most important events, the First Festival dell Budo in Torino left not only the organisers in awe: his way of moving and his explosive movements took their breath away. His videos were discovered in 2016 and shared numerous times on social media all over the world. He was invited to different countries all over the world who were interested in his teachings. He received at the Martial Hero Award event with his Wing Flow System the most beautiful congratulation a martial artist could get from Peter Chin, who was the training partner of Bruce Lee and one of only four students who received the official certificate from Bruce Lee. Interviewer Andrew Staton Filmed in 4K and directed by Matt Routledge With thanks to Bob Sykes, Paul Barnett and the UK Martial Arts Show. Learn more about your ad choices. Synopsis Bernstein, Blitzstein and Brecht . . . It sounds a little like a law firm, doesn't it? But today we celebrate the anniversary of an important MUSICAL partnership involving those three gentlemen. Marc Blitzstein and Leonard Bernstein were two American composers who shared a passion for musical theater. Bertolt Brecht was a German poet and playwright perhaps best known here for his collaboration with the composer Kurt Weill on “The Three Penny Opera.” The artistic careers of Bernstein, Blitzstein and Brecht came together on today's date in 1952, when, as part of the First Festival of the Creative Arts held at Brandeis University, Leonard Bernstein conducted the premiere of a new English-language version of “Three Penny Opera.” Blitzstein had seen the original 1928 production of “Three Penny Opera” when he was a student in Berlin, and some 20 years later had translated one of the show's songs just for fun. He got the chance to perform his translation for Kurt Weill, and Weill was so impressed he encouraged Blitzstein to translate the entire work. The Blitzstein version of the “Three Penny Opera” proved so successful that when it opened in an off-Broadway New York production, it ran for 2,707 performances. Music Played in Today's Program Kurt Weill (1900 – 1950): Little Threepenny Music (London Symphony members; Michael Tilson Thomas, cond.) CBS 44529

The Rock N Roll Archaeologist goes long and deep with famous Woodstock photographer, Elliott Landy on his time with The Band, a little on shooting Bob Dylan for the ‘Nashville Skyline' cover and Van Morrison's ‘Moondance' cover.  Elliott has a new crowd-source project through Kickstarter he is hoping to get off the ground. The new book will be called ‘Contacting the Band', a follow up to his 2016 book, ‘The Band' 1968-1969 about his two years working with the Americana godfathers. Elliott Landy's new book, Contacting The Band, will feature selected contact sheets of the photos I took of THE BAND in the late Sixties for their first two albums, Music From Big Pink and The Band. It will allow fans of THE BAND a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the process and frame by frame progression of these landmark photo shoots, including personal sessions with the guys at home and on the road.It will be the companion to my previous book, The Band Photographs, 1968-1969, published in 2015 with the support of a Kickstarter campaign. which became its highest funded photography book at that time. It will be the same size (12 x 12 inches) with the same high quality printing and heavyweight paper, and will fit beautifully alongside the first volume on your bookshelf or coffee table. Contact Sheets are photographic prints made from all the photos in a single roll of black and white film. The 35mm film I used had 36 photos in each roll. After developing, the film was cut into strips of 6 frames and placed on top of a sheet of 8x10 inch photographic paper with heavy glass on top to keep them flat. Once exposed to light, an image was created of each frame along with the film's sprocket holes and frame numbers.  Since the photos were too small to see clearly, photographers used special magnifying glasses to mark the frames they thought were the best. Today that selection process is done on a computer screen.Elliott Landy, born in 1942, began photographing the anti-Vietnam war movement and the underground music culture in New York City in 1967. He photographed many of the underground rock and roll superstars, both backstage and onstage, from 1967 to 69.His images of Bob Dylan and The Band, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Joan Baez, Van Morrison, Richie Havens, and many others documented the music scene during that classic rock and roll period which culminated with the 1969 Woodstock Festival, of which he was the official photographer. After that, Elliott moved on to other inspirations and art forms, photographing his own children and travels, creating impressionist flower photographs and doing motion and kaleidoscopic photography in both still and film formats. His photographs have been published worldwide for many years in all print mediums including covers of Rolling Stone, Life, the Saturday Evening Post, etc. and album covers, calendars, photographic book collections, etc.He has published Woodstock Vision, The Spirit of A Generation, in book and CD-ROM format, and authored the book Woodstock 69, The First Festival. He is currently publishing a series of limited edition lithographs of his classic rock photographs.https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thebandbook2/elliott-landy-contacting-the-band?ref=discovery&term=elliott%20landyhttps://www.elliottlandy.com/Visit our sponsor Adam & Eve for 50% off almost any item AND receive FREE shipping. The City of Sacramento recently announced it would rethink its ordinance on buskers and outdoor music performers. It also hired a new "Creative Economy" director to think how arts and music can get a bigger boost here. But there are still some sour notes. The Police Department is still called out to turn the music down. Gentrification means long-time music venues are getting complaints from new neighbors. Local musicians say they lack community support due to a lack of small venues, rehearsal spaces and frugal audiences who don't want to pay. So what should Sacramento be doing to boost its local music scene, and its musicians? Should we look at top music towns like Austin or Nashville and follow their lead? Or are we doing just fine creating our own plan? We're talking with musicians, and the people who book and promote them, about how we can achieve perfect pitch in the capital city. Also, for this podcast, it was fitting to start and end it with music from Sacramento-based performers, so: Podcast intro music: "Turn Up" by Element Brass Band Podcast ending music: "Love and Affection" by Todd Morgan and the Emblems PANELISTS * Scott Brill-Lehn, concert promoter and owner of SBL Entertainment * Byron Colborn, baritone saxaphonist and bandleader of several local ensembles, including Element Brass Band and the Byron Colborn Big Band * Gabriell Garcia, co-owner of the Blue Lamp * Johnathon Glus, director of Cultural and Creative Economy for the City of Sacramento * Danielle Vincent, founder of First Festival and Show Up Sacramento * Paul Willis, local rapper, spoken-word artist, educator and activist PODCAST PLAY-BY-PLAY * O to 5 min - Intro to California Groundbreakers * 5 min - Panelists introduce themselves, and share their favorite summer songs * 10 min - What are Sacramento's music tastes overall, and how have they changed over the years? * 14 min - The pros and cons of putting on an all-local-music festival in Sacramento * 19:10 min - The pros and cons of running a live music venue in Sacramento * 24 min - The pros and cons of "making a survival" as a professional musician in Sacramento * 29:10 min - Racism in Sacramento's music scene * 35:45 min - How the City of Sacramento plans to promote and support the music scene * 42 min - What factors bring Sacramentans out to see music shows * 47:15 - Why can't more local bands open shows for national acts? * 53:45 - How parking and permit issues affect Sacramento's music scene * 1 hr, 3:45 min - How to set up the young musicians we're training to be successful, working artists * 1 hr, 21:15 min - How philanthropy and civic investment can help boost Sacramento's music scene
