Novelist Louis de Bernières was born into a military family, and flown out to Jordan in a bomber. At the age of eight he was sent to Grenham House in Kent, a prep school run by two headmasters, one of them a paedophile and the other a sadist. He became fluent in Latin. Then he went to Bradfield College in Berkshire where he spent a lot of time fishing, and working for a local farmer when he was supposed to be doing sports. He then spent four months failing to become an army officer at Sandhurst, when what he really wanted to do was grow his hair long and play the guitar. In disgrace, he fled to Colombia where he worked as a tutor on a ranch belonging to an Englishman who also turned out to be a paedophile. He learned to ride western style, use a lasso, and round up cattle. He came home and studied philosophy at Manchester University, financing it by working as a landscape gardener. Afterwards he worked variously as hospital porter, landscape gardener, mechanic in a bent Morris Minor garage in East London, philosophy tutor, carpenter, motorcycle messenger, and English and Drama teacher in Ipswich. He trained to be a teacher in Leicester, and won a masters with distinction at the Institute of Education in London. He worked with truants in Battersea until his third novel was published and he was earning the same by writing as he had been as a teacher. Summary Louis de Berniere-Smart discusses his experience of boarding school and the emotional impact it had on him. He shares the harsh realities, including physical abuse, poor living conditions, and emotional bullying. Louis reflects on the emotional detachment and stoicism that he learned as a coping mechanism, as well as the difficulty of forming attachments and relationships later in life. He also discusses his unconventional path after leaving school, including his time in Colombia and his diverse range of jobs. Louis values connecting with people from all walks of life and has a deep interest in understanding others. In this conversation, Louis discusses his diverse work experiences and how they have influenced his writing. He shares stories from his time working in a garage , highlighting the importance of meaningful connections with people. Louis also talks about his experiences as a father and the impact it had on his life. He discusses the process of writing and how it allows him to explore different kinds of love and escape from self-obsession.

In this episode of Ear and Loathing, your hosts Aaron, Damon and George (The Gitmo Bros), along with guest Christine Joaquin-Ponchetti, talk about de niece and de nephew, band should be in quotes, why are you eclipsing my life, and Hoss is wet beside of me. In the Torture Chamber segment, Aaron, Damon and George compete for meaningless points by making Christine listen to her most hated songs. Will Christine survive the Torture Chamber long enough for an electric round of Brockeets? Tune in and find out! Songs featured in this episode: "Popozão" (Kevin Federline), "I Don't Like to Sleep Alone" (Paul Anka), "Stutter Rap (No Sleep Til Bedtime)" (Morris Minor and the Majors)
The first episode of Season 4 really sets the bar high (but panic not, we've got some great guests waiting in the wings too), Steve Waddingham is the official company historian for none other than Aston Martin Lagonda, but when he's not researching old colour names, and digging out race cars from dusty barns, he's behind the wheel of his own Austin Allegro! Yep... you read that right! We talk about his Father's Austin Cambridge, him working at his Dad's garage fixing cars. His Grandad who was a chauffeur, but typically drove a Morris Minor not a Daimler like everyone else - at the request of his employer! Think you're gonna love this one! Bilsnobbernes musikeksperter Thomas Nedergaard, aka. In 1930, Alfred Rouse, finding himself in financial trouble, faked his own death by purposefully setting his car, a Morris Minor, ablaze. To make the grizzly scene more believable, he murdered a man and placed him at the scene. The victim's identity has been a mystery for almost 100 years in what would come to be called The Burning Car Murder. But, in 2015, DNA from the victim was found preserved in an archival slide. Now, the search is on to match his DNA using an ancestorial search and find his identity. Could you hold a clue? Sources: Brief Case. (2020, May 4). - Volumen interior menor o igual a 2.400 litros. ¿A quién van destinados? ¡no me mires Rodrigo!...

Jon and Andy got in touch with Becca from The Passenger Seat Podcast feeling there had to be a story to tell. Becca, in her mid twenties, drives a Morris Minor every day and records a podcast from, yep, you've guessed it... The passenger seat. What was it about her parents choice of cars that led her to skip the Corsa's and Kia's that her peers might choose and opt for and oldie instead. A great discussion with reference to 1930s Singer Le Mans sportscars, saloons, Singer Vogue models from the late sixties, Riley Elf, Singer Chamois and Hillman Imp, and of course, Peggy, her own Morris Minor. You can follow Becca's podcast on You Tube (and the usual platforms) here: The Passenger Seat Podcast - YouTubeThis is the tenth and last episode of season 1. We will be recording new conversations in the meantime, but plan to release Season 2 Episode 1 in July 2023.
