Part 2 Acomi and Turk182 explore the art and short lived career of Canadian comic book artist Gene Day. A close friend and apprentice (of sorts) of artist Dave Sim, Gene did work for small press comics while trying to land a job at Marvel. He was eventually hired as the inker artist for the martial arts comic The Hands of Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu, and later became the series artist with issue #100. His clean and detailed art, along with impressive layouts and design, caught readers attention and sales increased. But, supposedly, not everyone liked Gene's panel layout and visual narrative. It's said, that editor Jim Shooter wasn't a fan of Gene's long, sequential action panels. A work incident involving a weekend trip to New York, big infested hotel, sleeping on the bullpen sofa, and lack of heat lead to his untimely death. Join Acomi and Turk discuss the beauty of Gene's work and his near cinematic story telling. They look into the rumors surrounding his feud with Jim Shooter, and the weekend work trip that some believe cause his death. Foggy McFogFace Hello, and welcome to episode 350 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week, we're on the hunt for the elusive 'third-time lucky' effect. Members of the original Guardians of the Galaxy make their third appearance in Marvel Two-in-One, and our hopes are tentatively high that this one will finally be a good comic. With Vance Astro looking to change his past and avert the pain of his current existence by checking which base his teenage self has reached while a mysterious fog saves everyone time on drawing backgrounds, could this be the one? Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio, Ron Wilson, Gene Day, George Roussos, John Costanza, Jim Salicrup, and Jim Shooter present Marvel Two-in-One #69 - Homecoming. Featuring an indistinct Daredevil, a barely-present Nikki, a highly-relevant piece of Two-in-One continuity, the origins of the New Warriors (...ish), and definitely no Welsh accents at all, because we've learned our lesson for once. Get More With The Fever On The Dance Floor Hello, and welcome to episode 348 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week, we're jumping onto the disco zeitgeist, a mere year after the cultural peak of the craze, as we join Ben Grimm and Warren Worthington III in a flashy, New York discotheque before they go and mix it up with a bunch of wacky robots in castle. With the motifs of 'crazy themeing' and 'assassination', could it possibly be Arcade pulling the strings? Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio, Ron Wilson, Gene Day, Glynis Wein, John Costanza, Jim Salicrup, Jim Shooter, and Dave Simons present Marvel Two-in-One #68, in which a robot frog guides our heroes, a bathroom rises suspiciously to the roof, a screwdriver is rather strong, a comic is not constructed in the manner to which one would be accustomed, and some terrible things are done to a Welsh accent. This Fantasticast Could Be Worth $2500 To You! Hello, and welcome to episode 344 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week, we bid a fond farewell to one of our favourite supporting characters from the Fantastic Four comics of the 1970s. Treading a fine line between ally and nemesis, Thundra finally heads home, but the journey is not easy, especially when you've got a Hyperion by your side, a Thing in the way, and the Nth Command on your tail... Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio, Ron Wilson, Gene Day, Frank Martin, John Costanza, Jim Salicrup, Jim Shooter, and Joe Sinnott present Marvel Two-in-One #67 - Passport to Oblivion, in Alicia steps out (of her house on a possible date), Thundra and Hyperion step out (of our universe and into a mirror of Femizonia), and Steve and Andy step out (of their comfort zone by reading Shogun Warriors #20 and wondering just what the hell was going on in that). The Bad Guy Is Called Hugh Hello, and welcome to episode 342 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week, a packed episode sees us don matching hats to dominate the entire- wait, these aren't hats! They're multiversal incarnations of the Serpent Crown! And only The Thing and the Scarlet Witch can save us from a oil CEO called Hugh. It's the final part of the Serpent Crown Affair, and we're here to examine just what happens when a deranged businessman tries to grab power in Washington. Oh, right... Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio, Ron Wilson, Gene Day, Frank Martin Jr, John Costanza, Jim Salicrup, Joe Sinnott, and Jim Shooter present Marvel Two-in-One #66 - A Congress of Crowns. And, if that wasn't enough for you, we also look at what happens when Reed and Sue go shopping in Defenders #86, what happens if Doctor Doom had chosen a path of heroism in What If? #22, and we throw ourselves into Shogun Warriors #19 to see if the addition of the Fantastic Four can save this little-loved title. Plus, we get a bit tired and honest while answering one of your e-mails... Send in your feedback to fantastic4podcast@gmail.com, leave your comments at the libsyn site, or at www.TheFantasticast.com. Superfluous Triton Hello, and welcome to episode 340 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week, we tackle the middle chapter of the Serpent Crown Affair. The Serpent Soci- uh, Squad are here to explain everything, destroy and oil rig, go treasure hunting, and exchange underwater punches with The Thing, Stingray, and special guest star Triton of the Inhumans, who definitely has a role to play in this issue, oh yes. Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio, George Perez, Gene Day, Carl Gafford, John Costanza, Jim Salicrup, Bob Budiansky, and Jim Shooter present Marvel Two-in-One #65 - Serpents From The Sea, in which your hosts definitely know who each member of the Serpent Soci- uh, Squad is, and Sidewinder (we think) delivers the most gratuitous exposition seen in Marvel Comics to date. And, as a bonus, we also dive into one entire panel of the Dark Phoenix Saga, as we take an exceedingly-brief look at Uncanny X-Men #135. Wind-Generated Oil Rigs Hello, and welcome to episode 337 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. We're at the start of another big storyline for Marvel Two-in-One, as abandoned plotlines from Namor's solo title drive the adventures of Benjamin "The Thing" Grimm and Walter "Stingray" Newall. A jaunt to visit the Inhumans turns into a rescue mission at a suspiciously-acting oil rig, and there are yet larger forces at work... Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Maccio, George Perez, Gene Day, Carl Gafford, Ben Sean, John Costanza, Jim Salicrup, and Jim Shooter present Marvel Two-in-One #64, the first part of the classic The Serpent Crown Affair. As well as this, we also take a brief look at the Tom DeFalco and Steve Ditko-produced Machine Man #15, in which wheels are definitely better than legs. This week we are chatting with someone who has used his discovery of passion in running and endurance sports to transform his life. Gene Day was never an athlete growing up. Years of alcoholism and a sedentary lifestyle left him in a spot of depression, anxiety and dissatisfaction. But life isn't defined by where you were. It is not about being stuck in a moment in time, unable to break the chains of your present situation. Life is an open book, the pages in front of you are blank, waiting for you to tell the story. Gene picked up the pencil and started telling a different story. Eleven and a half years of intentional action, consistency and celebrating gradual successes along the way and here he is prepping for his hardest race yet, the Volcanic 50k around Mt. St. Helens. In this episode, Gene shares his story. How he used consistent incremental gains to become first a runner and then a marathoner and now an ultrarunner and how he embraced the mindset of "to be good at something you have to be willing to be bad at it for awhile." This episode is fantastic. The philosophies Gene has formed through endurance sports are absolutely wonderful!! I truly related to his mindset and the joy he displays when chatting about the sport we love. Our hope is that this conversation will light a fire under you so you will seek purpose and share your own inspiration as you chase your goals! (Also he has a powerful reason for wanting to run around Mt. St. Helens originating from driving near it on a very significant day in the volcano's history. Don't want to give anything away but this story was AWESOME!!) Mark Gruenwald, Jerry Bingham, Gene Day, Roger Slifer, Joe Rosen, Bob Budiansky, Jim Salicrup, Jim Shooter, George Perez, and Terry Austin present Marvel Two-in-One #63, in which a Warlock is not suffered to live. It's Spankin' Time Hello, and welcome to episode 333 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week we're back in the realms of Marvel Two-in-One, as an extended cast (including Starhawk, Moondragon, Her, and Alicia Masters) make their way to Counter-Earth. Well, they would do, if some bastards hadn't towed the bloody thing away, forcing them to resurrect the High Evolutionary to work out where it's gone. All this for a shag... Mark Gruenwald, Jerry Bingham, Gene Day, George Roussos, Joe Rosen, Jim Salicrup, Jim Shooter, George Perez, and Joe Sinnott present Marvel Two-in-One #62 - The Taking Of Counter-Earth, in which Counter-Earth is taken, Starhawk reveals his secret power, and Moondragon receives some corporal punishment. Er... Yeah... Fnarr? Hello, and welcome to episode 331 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week, we're doing our best not to snigger in a smutty manner at the title of Marvel Two-in-One #61. Because there's nothing to laugh at, at all, alright? Anyway, we start another cosmic epic for Ben Grimm, as he gets mixed up with Her, Moondragon, Starhawk, and Alicia Masters. Some of these characters are headed out into space, and it's not necessarily the ones that you might be thinking of... Mark Gruenwald, Jerry Bingham, Gene Day, Ben Sean, Joe Rosen, Jim Salicrup, George Perez, and Terry Austin present Marvel Two-in-One #61 - The Coming Of Her. Featuring some things that I made notes about while editing the podcast, but I left those notes at home in Gent, and I'm over 500km away, so those notes might just as well have not been taken. Hmm. The finale to both the Project Pegasus Saga and our coverage of books cover-dated in the 1970s is finally here. Many questions will now be answered. What is Bill Foster really doing at Project Pegasus? Why is Wundarr so important to the story? What exactly was Dr Lightner up to? Why were so many villains being kept in the basement? Just how long did this entire saga actually last? Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio, George Perez, Gene Day, Carl Gafford, John Costanza, Roger Stern, Jim Shooter, and Terry Austine present Marvel Two-in-One #58 - To The Nth Power. Can this issue really put The Thing against a second dimensionally-powered villain whose body functions as a gateway to another realm in as many issues? Well... yes... but this one is much better! Thundra, blackmailed by a mysterious man with a cigar, leads the Grapplers into the tunnels of everyone's favourite energy research complex, and only Black Goliath, Quasar, and The Thing stand in their way! Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio, George Perez, Gene Day, Bob Sharen, Irv Watanabe, Roger Stern, Jim Salicrup, Jim Shooter, John Byrne, and Terry Austin present Marvel Two-in-One #56 - The Deadlier Of The Species! Featuring a maudlin Thundra, a confusing timejump, and the true debut of Screaming Mimi/Songbird. And, as a bonus, we catch up with a sickly Mr Fantastic as he helps Spider-Man identify the formula for an anti-matter bomb. Uh, Reed, you know that a formula alone doesn't make a bomb, right? The Unexpected Popeye Hello, and welcome to episode 304 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. Well, normally we would, but thanks to the a dose of real life, Andy's got the week off. That doesn't stop Steve from hitting the longboxes and diving into a strange tale (hehe) featuring Doctor Strange and Ben Grimm taking down a centuries-old necromancer in a creepy house ripped directly from an episode of Dark Shadows in Marvel Two-in-One #49, by Jo Duffy, Alan Kupperberg, Gene Day, Carl Gafford, Gaspar Saladino, Roger Stern, Jim Shooter, Bob Budiansky, and Al Milgrom. Joining Steve this week is Doctor Strange and 2000AD podcaster Conrad Leiden. Together, they examine the cartoonish, atmospheric artwork, the playful use of horror tropes, and what exactly constitutes a team-up when one of the heroes has no idea that the other one is there. As a bonus, they also dive into Godzilla, King Of The Monsters #20, where a museum turns out to be a terrible place to store a rapidly-growing lizard, and the Fantastic Four go toe-to-toe with one of the most iconic kaiju of all time. Hosts Stu Horvath and John McGuire welcome you back and breakdown what's coming up on Episode 2 (00:19). Stu explains his recent obsession with Azul, a deceptively complicated board game about building mosaics (01:20) and John updates us on where in the world his Big Trouble in Little China board game is. The main discussion starts (07:50) with Stu explaining why he loves Call of Cthulhu and fawns over the greatness of Chaosium. They pull out the first edition Call of Cthulhu box set and drill down into specifics (10:30), charting the games development from RuneQuest and Basic RPG (11:00) and the game's power dynamics (12:00). John describes some of the grisly ways his characters have died in Call of Cthulhu (15:40) and discussion turns to the fragility of the game's player characters (18:26). Stu breaks down the differences between the different editions of the game (19:00). Stu also talks about Gene Day, the late comic artist who illustrated the first edition Cthulhu box (22:04). The guys then chat about the titles of people who run games (23:20) and delight at CoC's nomenclature. Finally, Stu and John discuss how they finally have a regular RPG night again and chat about the first game they're playing: Tales from the Loop, a game inspired by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag (25:59). The guys bid your farewell until next time (28:47).
Matthew is the former long-running artist of the Mr.Monitor comic strip in Broken Pencil Magazine – Canada's national magazine for D.I.Y. Arts and zine culture. He and his long-time collaborator Cory McCallum (known collectively as Pier Pants Productions) won a Joe Shuster award in 2013. called the Gene Day award, denoting their Mr. Monitor short comic, The Pig Sleep, the best independent comic of that year. They've also collaborated on a number of other comics, including Errol Dynamic – a scifi space adventure with a theme song you can hear as part of this episode. Speaking of music, in this episode Daley reveals how he and McCallum made mini comics breaking down different styles of music – effectively blowing Aaron's mind. Daley also talks about how he found his surrealist geometric drawing style and how teen angst and resentment of Batman bandwagon jumpers in 1989 led him to move away from being influenced by Superhero comics into being influenced by indie work like Chester Brown's Yummy Fur and Mike Kaluta's Metropolis. This weeks guest is Joe Shuster Award nominated artist Keith Grachow. Keith tells his story as we discuss his history, his work for Disney as a digital inker and colourist and his comics work on Arcane Awakening, Polybius Dreams and Saltwater, for which he has been nominated for the Gene Day award for self publishing.
James Edward Clark is the Gene Day award-winning creator of Evil – a grindhouse, independent exploitation comic inspired by the films of Mexican wrestler El Santo. James was just a mild-mannered art student at Sheridan College when almost being burned alive in a house fire inspired him to say, “F– it” and bring Evil to life. He also talks about the influence of Robert Crumb (Zap Comix) and Greg Capullo (Batman, Spawn) in shaping his art style. Also for the first time ever, we go through a bag of comics our guest bought and review them. Oh, and our host is surprised with a birthday gift live on air.
