Art as Infrastructure: A Conversation on Social Practice, Community, and the Evolving Role of Nonprofit Art Spaces in Los Angeles An interview with Pranay Reddy, Director of LA Artcore In this compelling episode of What's My Thesis?, host Javier Proenza sits down with Pranay Reddy, the director of LA Artcore, for a far-reaching conversation that explores the role of nonprofit art spaces as vital community infrastructure in Los Angeles. With clarity, conviction, and deep sincerity, Reddy offers an unfiltered look at his trajectory from punk and zine culture in suburban Colorado to leading one of the city's longest-running artist-run institutions. The conversation traces Reddy's early exposure to alternative music and DIY media, his education at the Maryland Institute College of Art, and the profound influence of social practice artists on his own sculptural and photographic inquiries. Through personal reflection and institutional critique, Reddy unpacks the realities of inheriting LA Artcore's legacy and reimagining it for a new generation—one that demands transparency, inclusion, and intentional community-building. As the city contends with stark inequalities and ongoing housing crises, Reddy's leadership emphasizes LA Artcore's position in a broader ecosystem of mutual aid, solidarity, and decolonial cultural work. The discussion touches on the failures of the commercial art fair model, the limitations of traditional museums, and the importance of small-scale, grassroots infrastructures in giving artists room to experiment and be seen. Reddy shares details about LA Artcore's upcoming programming, including: Naman – A self-titled exhibition by a collective of Philippine X diaspora artists, opening March 15, exploring contemporary identity, historical presence, and visibility. Labkhand Olfatmanesh – A powerful installation centered on grief and grounding practices. Teamoz – An artist whose research into panda symbolism interrogates the complexities of U.S.–China relations. Tokyo Exchange Exhibition – Featuring ten artists from Tokyo, reactivating LA Artcore's longstanding commitment to international dialogue. Through it all, Reddy reaffirms his belief that artists are conduits of the communities they live and work in—and that art, at its best, is an infrastructure for care, connection, and change. In this episode of For The Record, we're joined by Mary Robb, CEO and Founder of Social Practice, to delve into the art and science of social media marketing in the always competitive, ever-evolving aesthetics industry. She started her career in traditional marketing prior to launching Social Practice in 2019, but she saw the writing on the wall- digital marketing, specifically social, was the key ingredient to building a strong brand. This episode is a power hour full of SO many insightful tips and proven tactics to turn your social media efforts into business growth, but some of our favorite highlights include: The Power of Storytelling Mary believes that social media is fundamentally about storytelling—sharing your passion, expertise, and how you serve your patients. For aesthetic practices, social media has become essential for patient education, community building, and practice growth. But the challenge lies in balancing genuine content with strategic business objectives. Crafting a Content Strategy Mary advocates for a structured content strategy that keeps teams aligned and engaged. From content batching for efficiency to defining clear roles and KPIs for staff participation, she emphasizes the importance of making social media a team effort rather than relying on sporadic posts or trendy content alone (and a team of experts when it's all too overwhelming!) Engaging Patient Content One of Mary's standout insights is her approach to creating patient content, like before-and-after photos and testimonials. She shares practical strategies for obtaining consent and suggests hosting “social media days” with incentives for patients who are willing to share their stories. This approach not only generates authentic content but also fosters a closer community around the practice. Most importantly, it gives Patients the content they really want- information about procedures, outcomes, and what to expect! Key Content Pillars for Success Mary recommends organizing content around four primary pillars: 1. Educational Content - Highlight expertise and share treatment insights. 2. Patient Outcomes - Showcase real results through testimonials and procedural content. 3. Culture Content - Provide a glimpse behind the scenes, spotlighting team members and practice values. 4. Sales/Promotional Content - Promote special offers, memberships, and limited-time deals. In Mary's experience, balancing these pillars helps practices maintain engagement while driving conversions, blending authenticity with strategic goals. Tools to Streamline Social Media Mary introduces tools like Splice for video editing, Sprout Social for content scheduling, and ChatGPT for content ideation, making social media management more feasible for busy practices. Building Community and Authentic Connections Mary stresses the importance of engagement beyond just posting. She discusses collaborating with local businesses and micro-influencers, highlighting that authentic connections often yield better results than traditional ads. Transforming your online presence into real patient appointments is the ultimate goal, so be stay on top of what is driving results and do more of that! This podcast is GREAT for those of us struggling with the daily grind of social media- What to post? What to write? What trends to follow? And on and on… and if or when it all becomes too much, connect with an expert like Mary and her team at Social Practice to help you get the results you need to turn your Posts into Profits! Artist Chinasa Vivian Ezugha discusses the performance piece Because of Hair, which was a springboard to her career as a performance artist and an activist. The piece entailed covering her face with a hair mask she had constructed as a sculptural object that, when worn, functioned as a catalyst for interpersonal and affective exchange, prompting myriad and often disturbingly violent reactions. Because of Hair reflects Ezugha's understanding of the politics of hair from her perspective as an Igbo woman living in Britain and also prompted her to make new work about the Biafran war, which deeply impacted her family. In other words, the interview explores how self-exposing performance art not only overlaps the personal with the political but also fosters the artist's confidence to have a political voice. This interview was carried out in 2017 as part of Oriana's research for her Phd on risky self-disclosure in performance art. Recently, Oriana has done a follow-up interview with Ezugha which will drop in two weeks.  Chinasa Vivian Ezugha is a Nigerian-born, British performance artist, scholar and PhD candidate at University of Exeter, United Kingdom. In this episode, we visit with two representatives from Fountain House in New York.  Our primary intent was to provide a platform to share the results of a recent research report issued by Fountain House:  Beyond Treatment: How Clubhouses for People Living with Serious Mental Illness Transform Lives and Save Money.  This first of its kind analysis not only offers a fuller accounting of the fiscal and societal costs of untreated mental illness — looking beyond health care spending to include lost wages and productivity, disability benefits, repeated emergency room visits, and criminal justice impacts — but demonstrates how clubhouses are uniquely positioned to drive down spending across the board.  The report finds that if clubhouses were appropriately resourced and expanded to serve even just five percent of the 15.4 million adults in the U.S. who live with serious mental illness, the net societal benefit would exceed $8.5 billion and offer a dramatic improvement in quality of life for countless individuals, their families, and their communities. The report notes that the U.S. has historically spent most of its mental health care dollars on clinical treatment, such as medication and therapy, with a fraction allocated to fund the community-based social supports people also need to manage their mental illness. These are policy decisions that can and should be changed. Fountain House is knitting together a national network of clubhouses to help amplify voices throughout the country to underscore the importance of the clubhouse model as a compelling mental health intervention that should be more robustly funded. The bios for our two guests are linked on the Fountain House website. Rev. Dr. Phillip Fleming wears many hats, including member, certified peer specialist and member of the Fountain House board of directors. Dr. Joshua Seidman is the Chief Research and Knowledge Officer.   Other resources and reports mentioned in this interview: Community as Therapy: The Theory of Social Practice. Join us for this thought-provoking conversation with founder Beth Stephens to learn more about ecosexuality for EARTH DAY. Ecosexuality is a person that finds nature romantic, sensual and sexy. It is a new sexual identity, much like you might think of pansexual as a newer sexual identity. An ecosexual is a person who imagines the earth as their lover, and it's a term used in dating that describes a person interested in environmentalism. For Beth Stephens and Annie Sprinkle, they have used this term ecosexuality within performance art to blur the boundaries between life and art. Their great love and relationship is something we discuss in this podcast and talking about a new way to queer the environmental movement. I hope you enjoy. Beth Stephens and Annie Sprinkle founded the ecosexual art movement from their weddings to each other and the earth starting in 2008. Since, then they have written a book, Assuming the Ecosexual Position (University of Minnesota, 2022), and produced two films about their work, Goodbye Gauly Mountain and Water Makes Us Wet, with one on the way, Playing With Fire. BIO Elizabeth M. Stephens is a filmmaker, artist, and professor in the Art Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Stephens grew up in the heart of rural West Virginia's coalfields where she forged deep bonds with the Appalachian Mountains, as well as with miners, labor activists, environmentalists, and other mountaineers. Stephens earned a PhD in Performance Studies from UC Davis in 2015, systemic settler colonial practices, racism and poverty are deeply intertwined with environmental justice. She developed and gained administrative approval for a new MFA in Environmental Art and Social Practice. Her first film was Goodbye Gauley Mountain with Annie Sprinkle. The second was Water Makes Us Wet. Stephens and Sprinkle have screened at Documenta 14 in Kassel, Germany and then went on to screen at MoMA, the British Film Institute and the Berlin Festspiele. In 2021 Stephens was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship with Annie Sprinkle for their new film, Playing with Fire. Their book is Assuming the Ecosexual Position: The Earth as Lover published by the University of Minnesota Press (2022). Ep. 7: Rob, 51, autistic -”I would go to meetups where I knew no one & I would be social with people I never met before - that's like the Super Bowl of social practice”   In today's episode Rob shares with Jodi how his ex-wife's family didn't like him and he didn't understand why until two of his son's were diagnosed as autistic. He shares his perspective on smiling and learning to use tone of voice as well as his personal strategies for being intentional with practicing social skills, all of which has resulted in new friendships.   In this episode, Jodi mentions research about how autistic individuals don't use facial expressions and eye contact for information in the same way as non-autistic individuals. One study notes:   "Direct eye contact elicits a heightened physiological response as indicated by heightened skin conductance and increased amygdala activity. For individuals with autism, avoiding the eyes is an adaptive strategy, however, this approach interferes with the ability to process facial cues of identity, expressions and intentions, The “eye avoidance” strategy has negative effects on the ability to decode facial information about identity, expression, and intentions, exacerbating the social challenges for persons with ASD."   Tanaka, J. Hockaday advocates for a qualified sense of unity; she acknowledges the imperfect and messy nature of working together, while suggesting that the very act of building and maintaining relationships is prefatory to social and political change. “Artists-in-Presidents” is curated by Christine Shaw, and commissioned by The Blackwood (University of Toronto Mississauga). She has worked with the Floating Neutrinos since 2001, and collaborated with Swoon's Swimming Cities projects, sailing floating sculptures along the Hudson, Mississippi, and the Adriatic Sea (2006–09). In 2011, she created The Boatel, a floating art hotel in New York's Far Rockaways made of refurbished salvaged boats—an effort to reconnect New Yorkers to their waterfront. Her 2014 piece All These Darlings and Now Us highlighted the displacement of San Francisco's queer community: more than 1000 people watched peep show performances on a raft of retrofitted sailboats featuring artists from two recently shuttered iconic queer businesses. Her latest body of work was, and continues to be made, under a Monmouth University Fellowship where she is the Urban Coast Institute Artist-in-Residence. She became an art professor in 2016 at Monmouth, after a season of life that led her and her husband to move up to Maine, build an off the grid home, replant a clear cut forest, and more... all while beginning their family life. Her return to education was a natural fit since her and her husband spent much of their time up north as educators/lead by example sustainable ecology advocates. Kimberly also dedicated much of her time there to helping build and connect the artist community with the community surrounding through the Belfast Creative Coalition where she and other members hosted workshops and events that integrated all of her loves- nature, art, family, community, and making a go of it as an artist entreprenaur. In this new season of life, sharing time between Maine and the New Jersey Coastline, she has found a home as always in the studio, but now within the university setting, where all things technology, ecology, education, and humanity combine to help her thrive as a creative, make work that has consequences, and share all of that with her students. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thestolenhourspodcast/message

I had the opportunity to sit and talk with Jessica Serran in Prague, Czech Republic about: Nervous breakdowns, Starving artists, Therapy, Marketing, Conscious business, Marketing artwork, Fear of rejection, Coaching, Expectations, The role of an art gallery, Definition of success, Authenticity, Bartering, Self sabotage, Online marketing, Analytics, SEO, Marketing funnel, Crowdfunding, Failure tolerance, Vulnerability, Embarrassment, and the need to 'Do the last thing you want to do every day, first'. https://jessicaserran.com   About I remember being in art school and thinking to myself, “I must not be an artist. This is way too painful.” I worried that if anyone knew what was behind my paintings — how I really felt, they'd disown me; the secrets of how dark and confused my inner world was would be revealed. Worse yet, I feared that if I spoke my own truth, others would be forced to acknowledge theirs. For years I vacillated between making art and having a fair amount of success, to falling fallow – thinking that I should quit and do something else altogether. Maybe I'd be happier if I wasn't making art? Except that I wasn't. I was a total cliché of the starving artist but that didn't stop me. It's not that things weren't happening. They did. I got a Masters degree, exhibited my work, brought in grants and sold paintings. Most people saw me as confident and well adjusted. The problem was the constant tension I felt between knowing that I was here to do big things and the deep dives I took into darkness and confusion. That, and a deep-seated sense that I was just “too much” for people. I used to lay awake at night wondering if there was a way to make art and make money — a way to have a big impact in the world but to also live well. I wanted the exquisite live-work space that I always envisioned. I wanted organic food and clothes that felt like me. I wanted to be invited to beautiful places to show my work. The problem was that I didn't see examples of the kind of artist that I wanted to be. I was dazzled by the Abstract Expressionists, in love with the world of Social Practice, enamoured by spirituality and personal development, but didn't see any place where these three converged. It wasn't until years later, face down in a foreign country, when my proverbial shit hit the fan that I decided, “Eff it.The only way that I'm going to be this artist is if I insist, RIGHT NOW, that I already am.” I could no longer play small. Back in grad school they taught us that before we could take our art into the world and share our gifts, we had to first find our own authentic voice. And that finding our voice required a head-first dive into the alchemical fire. Only then could we bring our art into community and bring healing to others. They also admitted that they had no idea how our careers would look because they didn't exist yet and because every single one of us was creating something unprecedented. Something the world had yet to see the likes of. Now, eighteen years after this whole journey began, I'm living in the land of my ancestors, making my art, exhibiting internationally, traveling, lecturing, and doing the other thing that completely lights me up: I help Visual Artists who have shit to say, learn to step up, speak their truth and make art that dazzles the world.
