Today's Topics: 1) Gospel - Jn 19:25-34 - Standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple there whom He loved, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. After this, aware that everything was now finished, in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I thirst.” There was a vessel filled with common wine. So they put a sponge soaked in wine on a sprig of hyssop and put it up to His Mouth. When Jesus had taken the wine, He said, “It is finished.” And bowing His Head, He handed over the Spirit. Now since it was preparation day, in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, for the sabbath day of that week was a solemn one, the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken and they be taken down. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and then of the other one who was crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His Legs, but one soldier thrust his lance into His side, and immediately Blood and water flowed out. Father Charles Murr joins Terry to discuss the importance of the relationship between good philosophy and good theology, the importance of knowing the Faith, and not straying from the Deposit of Faith Bishop Sheen quote of the day

In this episode, Nate and Micah have a little chat about the importance of theology - why having clear, articulate terms to describe your faith is integral for avoiding dangerous pitfalls. One of the traps of spending too much time learning more religious verbiage is becoming prideful in your thinking. The boys talk about how learning more about God and applying accurate descriptions of Him should actually produce humility. R.C. Sproul states "The more I learn about God, the more aware I become of what I don't know about him."   Lend us your ear!

Welcome back to the Good Theology podcast, where we continue our exploration of the profound "I am" statements of Jesus throughout the gospel. This time, we're shining a light on the statement, "I am the light of the world," a phrase with profound significance in our spiritual journey. Together with Jake Sweetman and David Campbell, we break down this statement in the context of the festival of Tabernacles, discussing themes of God's presence, guidance, and the assurance of His light in our darkest times. Listen in as we unpack the themes of light and darkness throughout the Bible, tracing their presence from the creation story to the Exodus and the overall narrative of Israel. This episode offers a deep understanding of Jesus' role as the light in the new beginning, illuminating the world and creating new creation. Jake and David lend their insights to the exploration of light and darkness in the Bible, discussing how these themes connect to Jesus' healing of a blind man in John chapter 9 and the messianic prophecy in Genesis 49. We also touch on God's unique ability to bring good out of bad situations, the importance of yielding to Him, and the assurance of His presence even in our darkest moments. This episode is part of a series on the "I am" statements of Jesus, and it promises to shed light on these significant phrases and their implications for our faith journey. In this episode, Jake Sweetman and David Campbell discuss the stunning Cathedral of Durham, which is home to some very prominent biblical scholars like N.T. Wright. We explore the Church of England and the battle shaping up for its soul between liberal and conservative factions.  David shares the inspiring story of Ellen Bell, the pastor of a church in Durham who has faithfully led his congregation for 30 years and how his hard work has paid off with the opening of a new building. This serves as a reminder to pastors that the path to growth is not always explosive, but faithful hard work is still rewarded. They also examine the arbitrary benchmarks we often set for when someone qualifies as a person and how this ties into personhood theory.  This discussion touches on topics such as abortion, euthanasia, embryos, and transhumanism. They delve into how Greek philosophy, not the Bible, is the source of the idea of separating body from person, leading to extreme positions and the importance of Christians treating everyone with dignity, regardless of their beliefs. Lastly, they explore the differences between moral and political issues and how they impact our society.  Join us as we discuss how Christians should approach politics, and distinguish between taking a stand on a moral issue versus an economic one. We consider the importance of taking a stance on moral issues like abortion and euthanasia, and the dangers of associating ourselves with an economic system. How has our culture and worldview created a divide between the mind and body, and what are the implications of such a divide? In this thought-provoking conversation, we discuss Nancy Piercy's book Love Thy Body and explore the origins of this dualistic thinking in ancient Greek culture. We contemplate how Judeo-Christianity offers a holistic view of humanity, valuing the body through beliefs in the resurrection and incarnation, and how other philosophies like Marxism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Stoicism share similar views of escapism or perfectibility. We also dive into the controversial topic of abortion ethics and personhood theory in light of Nancy's argument that our dualistic views on the mind and body have led to devastating consequences. As we consider the ramifications of a society where the right to live is granted only by the state, we question the potential slippery slope towards totalitarianism and the importance of recognizing the interconnectedness of our minds, bodies, and spirits when tackling contemporary ethical issues. Join us as we explore Plato's search for divinity, the impact of ancient Greek thought on Christianity, and the value of the physical world, along with a fascinating discussion on the incoherence of the argument for abortion rooted in materialistic worldviews. We examine the power of the Christian God as a personal creator who made us in His image, endowing us with consciousness, choice, and values, and how this worldview can serve as a compelling argument for the existence of a higher power. Navigating conflict and forgiveness in our lives is essential for healthy relationships and spiritual growth. By following Jesus' teachings in Matthew 18 and practicing forgiveness, reconciliation, and accountability, we can work towards restored relationships and a stronger church community. In this episode Dave and Jake explore the concepts of forgiveness, reconciliation, and accountability as guided by Jesus' teachings in Matthew 18:15-20. They discuss the importance of understanding and practicing forgiveness in our relationships with others, and the process of confronting someone who has wronged us with the goal of reconciliation and restored relationships. They also delve into the role of the church in this process, emphasizing the importance of direct communication, accountability, and ultimately, handing over judgment to God. ----- Join us every Thursday for conversations with each other, regular contributors & special guests.
