It reads: “The Lost Arm of F. Stewart, September 27, 1910.” I remember the first time I saw it. The date struck me immediately—September 27, 1910—but what stood out even more was that this gravestone seemed dedicated to an arm. Why just the arm? Who was F. Boston Common has the distinction of being the first Public Park in America after Puritan colonists bought the land in 1634. Though it's beautiful today, this park has a deeply dark history. Sparked by early interests in presidential history and inspired by books and family trips, Kurt's unique quest began in childhood. His book combines memoir and historical facts, recounting adventures and discoveries at burial sites. Besides graves, Kurt has explored presidential libraries, capturing memories through photographs. He continues his historical pursuits, researching and visiting various historical figures, reflecting his deep passion for public and presidential history. Kurt's fascination with presidential history began at age seven, spurred by the book So You Want to Be President?. Kurt has visited the graves of all U.S. presidents and vice presidents, documenting these visits in his book. He emphasizes the importance of photographs for documenting and sharing historical sites. During the 1750s and 1760s, a stone carver in Hampton, Connecticut created a number of bizarre gravestones in the town and in a few other neighboring communities. He abruptly stopped producing these stones after 1769, but then in the 1770s his work started to appear some 60 miles away in the Western Massachusetts towns of Becket and Worthington. Until now, his identity has eluded gravestone scholars, who dubbed him the "Hampton Indian" because the feathered wings on the stones bear some resemblance to a Native American headdress. This episode explores the style of his gravestone carvings, his sources of inspiration, and a theory as to his identity, which is based on several key pieces of circumstantial evidence.
