Our guest for this episode is the hilarious comedian Helen Lederer! We talk about how she helped pave the way for slags trying to be funny like us. She tells us what it was like to do stand-up in the eighties, alongside the likes of Ben Elton and Ellie's Dad, and we discuss what's changed since. Lederer tells us all about her brilliant book, Not That I'm Bitter, which is out now. She explains what it's like to write a memoir that's honest and funny without being mean, and we touch on some of the sexier bits (for the full saucepan story, you'll need to buy the book - it's a good one.)There's also some chat about dealing with bad reviews and self-doubt, and whether life gets better after 50. And of course, there are some Scummy Mummy Confessions - this week involving vag eye and shouting. Recently she has published her memoir Not That I'm Bitter and set up the Comedy Writing In Print Prize. Ilaria Bernardini is an Italian novelist and screenwriter. She is currently working on Bernardo Bertolucci's final script which Ilaria co-wrote with hi -The Echo Chamber. Her choice is the seminal feminist Italian novel Forbidden Notebook by the Italian-Cuban writer Alba de Cespedes about the inner life of an Italian housewife and Mama of the family. Our guest today is a writer and actress who broke the mould as a stand up comedian in the first wave of Alternative comedy. Helen Lederer has appeared in some of the finest UK comedy shows over the last 40 years including Bottom, Absolutely Fabulous, Naked Video, French and Saunders, Girls On Top, The Young Ones and many, many more. She did stand up at a time when female comedians were few and far between and brightened up every single show she appeared in for decades. Helens new autobiography 'Not that I'm bitter' is a hilarious trip through accidents, apologies and awkward situations which never flinches and always brings a smile to your face. It is a real delight that we can welcome the brilliant Helen Lederer to 'What Goes Around'.First off however we celebrate Pride month and take a journey into the world of Gay clubbing, we talk to Sy from The Phoenix about organising Bristol's Pride events and running an inclusive and friendly safe space for all in his pub. We also speak to Chris the resident DJ at 'Don't Tell Your Mother' one of Bristol's longest running Gay nights about community and longevity. To round things off we speak to the 'Girl on Girl' collective about their incredible lesbian events which break the musical mould by offering futuristic club music from around the world in a safe and creative space. Before all that Deb gets her tidy on and imposes order on some oddly shaped pieces of cardboard while Eamon looks on in awe.It is a bumper episode to celebrate Pride month and because of the issues that it raises we would like to invite you to show support for the LGBTQ+ community by donating to our selected charities - The Albert Kennedy Trust (which helps LGBTQ+ people who have been made homeless) and Young Minds (who offer support and practical help for young people dealing with their mental health). My guest today is the writer, actress and comedian Helen Lederer. Helen began as a stand-up comedian in the “comedy swamp” of the 1980s, where women were like hen's teeth and rose to fame with her sloaney girl at the bar in the BBC Comedy ‘Naked video'. Then came Saturday Night Live, The Young Ones, French and Saunders and Bottom with Rik Mayall. But she's probably best known as Catriona the dippy journalist in the TV series Absolutely Fabulous. It was after writing her first novel, Losing It, that Helen set up the Comedy Women In Print prize to put funny women's writing on the map and help ensure the next generation wouldn't have to put up with the lack of recognition she endured. (Also, she was pissed off!)Now the woman Dawn French calls “the third funniest woman in the world” has written a hilarious and frequently painful memoir about surviving that swamp, Not That I'm Bitter. She tells truths, she names names and she gives herself an absolute hiding!Helen and I got together over a Zoom cuppa to discuss life as the lone woman on the 80s comedy circuit and why being a pioneer is all very well, but she'd rather have had mainstream success! She also talked about professional jealousy, not “being in the A team”, fear of authority, why she's spent her life on a diet (remember Limmits biscuits?!) And being tougher on herself than anyone else.* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Not That I'm Bitter by Helen Lederer and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com• And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. I found the clip of her on Wogan that I mention in the intro. To make it even more enthralling, it's a real pleasure to see how confused Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan are by the whole thing. Forgot they were on the sofa too! Watch that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIvbOA8XLgw We talk about trying to phone Mickey Dolenz from the payphone at school; crushing on George Harrison; and dating artists. We also talk about Helen's new book "Not That I'm Bitter", which lifts the lid behind the scenes of the comedy world of the 1980s and 90s. It's been described as frank and funny and a bit mad - which I'm pleased to say was exactly how she was in person too. The Comedy Women in Print Prize is the only literary prize in the UK and Ireland to spotlight funny writing by women. Now in its second year, it was launched by comedian and actress Helen Lederer in response to the lack of exposure for female comedy writing. The 2020 shortlist for Published Comic Novel included the likes of Candice Carty-Williams, and Jeanette Winterson, but the winner was announced on Monday evening as Nina Stibbe for her novel Reasons to be Cheerful. We’re joined by Nina and the Chair of Judges and bestselling author Marian Keyes. A study by Imperial College London suggests that providing financial incentives for GPs to offer information about long-acting reversible contraceptives, such as the hormonal implant, is associated with an increase in their use and a reduction in the number of abortions, particularly in young women ages 20-24 and those from deprived backgrounds. The study used anonymised data from over 3 million women over a 10 year period. Jenni speaks to Professor Sonia Saxena, one of the co-authors of the research. When listener Christine was a kid she was told never to talk to neighbours or answer any of their questions and people outside the family weren’t allowed in the house. She never knew the reason why. But she has just discovered a shocking secret and now has answers. Christine spoke to reporter Jo Morris. A new series of Ambulance starts on Wednesday 16th September on BBC One. Jenni speaks to one of the people featured, an emergency medical dispatcher called Mandy Cassidy, who was motivated to work for the Ambulance Service when she lost her son. He was just 18 years old and was a victim of knife crime. He wasn’t in a gang, but simply had gone out with friends. There was an argument that night and he was stabbed. John Reen talks to local Writer Emma Pitt about her writing career in film and TV and the release of her award winning film "The Ballard of a Haunted Man." Emma Pitt was born in Oxfordshire and grew up in the Somerset village of Stogumber where her parents still live. From there, she moved to South East London to study for a Communications and Sociology degree at Goldsmiths University and has lived there ever since. Her work mentor once asked her ‘what do you really want to do?' so with that in mind she enrolled on a TV Script Writing Course at City Lit in Central London. She'd done Script Writing as part of her first degree and often thought about being a writer. Jim Hill taught the course. Jim has a lengthy TV career; he created Boon and directed Lovejoy, Casualty and Minder. 5 minutes into that class, Emma knew this was for her. Jim encouraged her to enrol onto the TV Script Writing MA, which he ran, at De Montfort University in Leicester. It was a 2-year part time course so she moved into a part time role in the Regulatory Performance Team at Kings: a job she is still in.   She achieved a Distinction in the MA and won the Media Film and Journalism Prize for Best Project. She then secured an agent, Rebecca Watson at Valerie Hoskins Associates and has since been commissioned to write for Jed Mercurio's ‘Critical' on Sky 1 and has had projects in development with a number of TV companies including Red Productions and ITV. She's also won a number of short play competitions, and one of these plays was a short horror called ‘The Ballad of a Haunted Man'.   Emma met TV cameraman Dan Shoring during her MA. In 2017 they decided to turn ‘The Ballad of a Haunted Man' into a short film. Dan organised the crew and Emma assembled the cast: she already knew Helen Lederer, Emma's husband suggested Shane Attwooll, who he knew from the local music scene – Shane had just played George Cornell opposite Tom Hardy in Legend. Helen suggested Eliza Leonard to play her daughter. Thankfully they all loved the script. The film was made with no budget and a lot of good will. Emma also directed and co-produced with Dan. It's now screened at festivals across the world and won a number of awards, including Best Actor for Shane at The Twin Tiers International Film Festival in New York, Best Horror Film at The Mediterranean Film Festival in Cannes and Best Woman Filmmaker for Emma at the Los Angeles Independent Film Awards. In total it's received 3 Best Actor awards, 7 Seven Best Actor nominations, 5 Best Film awards and 17 Best Film nominations. It was released online on Sat 7th March after a 2-year festival run. Her new short film, The Boy Who Thought He Could Fly is just starting on the festival circuit. It stars Shane Attwooll, Jenna Russell and Archie Sanders, and is focused around the themes of grief, loss and of how important it is to talk and to listen. It's already won the Silver Spotlight Award for Best film at Spotlight Film Awards in Atlanta and Best Actor Under 18 at the monthly Gold Film Awards in London for Archie.   Emma had a one act play, Invisible String, staged last year at an Off West End Theatre by Get Over It Productions who also staged her short play Ever Changing Skyline at the Chiswick Playhouse earlier this year. Ever Changing Skyline has just been selected by Kibo Productions to be staged as part of their new showcase at the Omnibus theatre in Clapham. She is also developing her own TV project with BBC Drama. Emma is married to Americana/Country singer Dave Sutherland whose music you can hear on both films. The Ballard of a Haunted man has now bee released on Youtube and can be found on the links below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ma19wOk3-o www.maritimeradio.co.uk
