Thubten Chodron is an American Tibetan Buddhist Nun and the founder of Sravasti Abbey, the only Tibetan Buddhist training monastery in the United States. In her recently re-released book Working With Anger, Thubten describes different practices for dealing with our anger that don't involve expression or suppression. On this week's episode of Everyday Better, Thubten and Leah explore the Buddhist perspective on some of the toughest emotions we experience, including anger. While many of us believe that anger is useful or even righteous, Thubten argues that anger distorts our perception of reality. She encourages us to reframe our anger using techniques such as meditation, self-reflection and humor. Follow Leah Smart on LinkedIn. Follow Thubten Chodron on LinkedIn. Several years ago, I read Venerable Thubten Chodron's book, Working with Anger, and I found it quite inspiring. A couple of months ago, her schedule finally allowed time to speak with me. We talked exclusively about anger, what it is, why it's harmful, and how we can work with anger in ways that heal relationships, rather than destroy them. She touches on anger's role in some of the most challenging situations, like gender bias and war protests, and how we can deal with these situations courageously and skillfully. Venerable Thubten Chodron is an author, teacher, and the founder and abbess of Sravasti Abbey, one of the first Tibetan Buddhist training monasteries for Western monks and nuns in the U.S. She teaches worldwide and is known for her practical and entertaining explanations of how to apply Buddhist teachings in daily life. She's the author of many excellent books on Buddhist philosophy and meditation. Venerable Chodron is currently co-authoring, with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, an extraordinary multi-volume series of teachings on the Buddhist path, The Library of Wisdom and Compassion. What if the most courageous, compassionate thing you could do in life, was to learn how to be with yourself?Today's clip is from episode 387 of the podcast with Buddhist monk, meditation teacher and author of ‘A Handbook for Hard Times: A Monk's Guide to Fearless Living' - Gelong Thubten. In this clip he explains that when we distract ourselves by scrolling, overeating, or drinking for example, we're pushing away emotional pain or discomfort – even if we may not realise it. Anam Thubten. One of the main causes of human suffering is being trapped in a reality that is constructed merely by our own minds and thoughts. A huge amount of our suffering goes away naturally upon awakening to the true nature of reality, which in Buddhism is called emptiness. Buddha gave the teachings on emptiness both directly and indirectly as the fulcrum of his sermons. Avalokita Talk#23, Anam Thubten speaks on the teachings on emptiness drawing from Buddhist writings and his own personal experience.

Welcome back to Motherkind Moment. Moment is your place on a Monday for calm and connection and maybe even a shift in perspective before the week ahead. This week I speak to the incredible Gelong Thubten, who has over 20 years worth of experience working with schools, universities and businesses, such as Google. He's lectured at institutions like Oxford and the UN and, he worked as a consultant on the Marvel Movie, ‘Dr. Strange'. In our conversation, we unpacked how to sit with your feelings and train yourself to become more mindful in your daily life. I hope you enjoy this moment episode. As always, we continue the conversation over on Instagram.
What if the most courageous, compassionate thing you could do in life, was to learn how to be with yourself? It's a powerful, perhaps surprising idea put forward by this week's guest, the Buddhist monk, meditation teacher and author Gelong Thubten. Thubten became a monk back in 1993 after suffering from severe physical and mental burnout whilst following his dream of becoming an actor in New York City. His new book, A Handbook for Hard Times: A Monk's Guide to Fearless Living, draws on what he's learned over the past 30 years. Its premise is that we can embrace life's difficulties as opportunities for personal transformation, using hard times to cultivate resilience, kindness, and happiness. We begin our conversation talking about distraction and addiction, two states that are very closely linked. When we distract ourselves by scrolling, overeating, or drinking for example, says Thubten, we're pushing away emotional pain or discomfort – even if we may not realise it. But the discomfort is really in the pushing. If we can learn instead to sit with what's making us uncomfortable, those emotions start to transform. So, how exactly are we meant to do this? Thubten explains that one way is through the practice of meditation and learning how to process negative emotions in the moment, rather than only understanding them in retrospect. The most common misconception is that meditation needs a clear mind. But thoughts are inevitable, and the goal is not to push them away. If we use meditation to sit with our thoughts, rather than escape them, the transformations really start to happen. We become less controlled by negative emotions and start to cultivate positive ones. Meditation can unlock our innate self-compassion and this, in turn, improves our relationship with ourselves and with others. Thubten insists that you can't fail at meditation, because it really just means ‘being you'. The more we meditate, the less we run away from hard times and fear, and the more we become our true, contented selves. Thubten is an excellent communicator and I hope you enjoy this really special episode.Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. My guest today is one of my favourite people on the planet, Gelong Thubten. I never met Thubten before - we met on a Zoom call two and a half years ago during the times of covid where he truly changed my life. He doesn't know that but I'll talk about that in a minute. We stayed in touch as much as we could after we recorded that podcast episode. And now finally at my best friend's studio in London, we meet for the first time and we meet for me to realise that he is exactly what I thought he was. Thubten has written a new book that he so kindly shared with me before he shared with the rest of the world it's called Handbook For Hard Times - such an appropriate title for what we are about to go through if you don't mind me saying. It's a monk's guide to fearless living. I absolutely loved it. The book is out in just a few days on August 31st. I would ask you to please pre-order it. This week I thought, with the New Year, it would be great to re-release a fantastic chat I had with Gelong Thubten, who is a meditation teacher and author of the fantastic book, ‘A Monk's Guide to Happiness'. Thubten was led to completely change his life after suffering from burnout in his early 20s. This led him to a Buddhist monastery in Scotland where he studied and was ordained as a monk. Since then, Thubten has been sharing his wisdom worldwide and is a pioneer in mindfulness meditation. Thubten has over 20 years worth of experience working with schools, universities and businesses, such as Google. He's lectured at institutions like Oxford and the UN and, he worked as a consultant on the Marvel Movie, ‘Dr. Strange'. In our conversation, we unpacked what happiness really is and we talked about how can we find freedom from our 'crazy minds'. We also talked about meditation, of course, and Thubten did a great job re-framing some of the resistance that we often feel towards meditation. Thubten also gives guidance around how the practice can support our children and the way we show up as parents. I really loved our conversation, and hope you enjoy it too.

In Episode #35 on The Jen Mavros Show, we deepen into the understanding of Forgiveness and Mindfulness led by Tibetan Buddhist Monk, Gelong Thubten. After he beautifully guides us through a meditation, we begin to unpack how one can forgive and really what mindfulness is. Thubten is leading authority in teaching mindfulness and was the meditation consultant on the set of Marvel's latest movie, Dr. Strange, where he trained Benedict Cumberbatch and Tilda Swinton in meditation techniques while they were filming. He runs three training centres, has lectured on Buddhism and meditation at the top universities and travels globally sharing his sacred wisdom with others. Truly a heart-expanding episode, that you can't miss!!
