Last Friday, Governor Ferguson signed a bill into law that would force priests to break the seal of confession, which, in some cases, would lead to jail time if a priest refuses. What about mandatory reporting or other steps? How does this impact the freedom of religion? Rebecca Anderson of Sacred Heart Radio and 40 Days for Life joins us to share her experience with confession and her insights. https://www.archbishopetienne.com/clergy-answerable-to-god-or-state
Welcome to B The Way Forward: Interludes - a mini series of special episodes and conversations that stand apart from our regular season, but are just too good not to share. Dr. Rebecca Anderson, Kendall Holbrook, and Supriya Gupta. All three are leaders within the technology, business and career development spaces. They are all working on truly innovative products, research, and technological solutions to pressing problems. We could do entire episodes with each of them individually about their work - and we just might! But in this episode, recorded live at Grace Hopper Celebration 2024, we've invited all three to talk about an important common thread, a shared passion they all have, and that we knowI know you do too if you're listening. How do we drive innovation while also promoting inclusivity and equity? Because we all know that those values contribute to more innovation, better outcomes, and thriving workforces… and that isn't just vibes, there's data that backs that up. A study by McKinsey and Company found that Tech companies with diverse workforces are 35% more likely to outperform their non-diverse counterparts. And yet, according to another study by Deloitte, women make up only 29% of senior management positions globally and the numbers are similar for historically minoritized individuals. So can we change that? And how do their fields - human-centric AI, STEM career development, financial technology, and leadership, create opportunities for underrepresented groups and support sustainable, purpose-driven solutions in today's rapidly evolving industries? Listen in and find out! "Stop asking women and non-binary folks to conform to a male gender ideal of leadership. And yet when then we conform to those male ideals, we are punished for acting in ways that are incongruent with our female presenting stereotypes. We're asked to be strong, confident, decisive, but if we do, then we're looked at as aggressive, leading beyond our competence, insensitive. This double bind of having to be both confident and decisive and yet warm and friendly is something we need to get rid of. And I think a lot of that does come from stepping into our acceptance and being really transparent with it." -- Dr. Rebecca Anderson --- At AnitaB.org, we envision a future where the people who imagine and build technology mirror the people and societies for whom they build it. Find out more about how we support women, non-binary individuals, and other underrepresented groups in computing, as well as the organizations that employ them and the academic institutions training the next generations. --- Connect with AnitaB.org Instagram - @anitab_org Facebook - /anitab.0rg LinkedIn - /anitab-org On the web - anitab.org --- Our guests contribute to this podcast in their personal capacity. Rebecca Anderson joins Mary and Andrew to discuss her work with National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and government body under the purview of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Steeped in Permaculture, with a degree in Environmental Science and Resource Management, and time as a Woofer, Rebecca shares what the NRCS provides and what she does in her job to support anyone interested in conserving soil, water, and other natural resources with technical and financial support. As a permaculture practitioner, I recommend listening to this conversation because assistance from NRCS is free and isn't just for farmers and it's easy to start the process. Rev. Rebecca Anderson gives her last sermon before she leaves on a 3 month Sabbatical. How can Bethany UCC learn to sing together? Let's come together, understand other perspectives and sing. Listen now.
Rebecca Anderson co-pastors two churches with Vince Amlin – an inherited church in the morning and a new start church on Sunday afternoons. She offers a unique perspective on the changing landscape of church – its structures, communities, and worship. Gilead Chicago got its start before COVID-19 as a community that tells true stories that saves lives, throws great parties, and worships beautifully. This new ministry is supported by the United Church of Christ and the Disciples of Christ. Anderson oozes passion for creating spiritual community in refreshing ways. Join us for this conversation.
This episode features some of our most anticipated guests: Mr. Dane Newlove and Mrs. Rebecca Anderson, our band directors in high school! These two provided over 60 years of music teaching not just at St. Marys Memorial High School, but for grades 5-8 as well. Jameel was not able to join for the interview, so Joseph handled this one on his own, beginning with their background in music and how they arrived as band directors, how they handled their huge teaching loads (6:55), what allowed SMABB, St. Marys All-Brass Marching Band, to thrive where other marching bands don't (10:25), and the non-marching band aspects of their teaching (16:50). We also ask how they see and are involved in music programs today (27:45). The Great Dane and Mrs. A also provide some funny stories from their legendary tenures (36:00). We will have a follow-up episode with Jameel so he can weigh in on this interview, as well as go over the trivia question for this week.
Prayer vigils with 40 Days for Life are starting up again worldwide and you can find one in your area. We discuss what they entail with Rebecca Anderson then shift our attention to chemical abortion pills and the black market.

Host: This is Minnesota Native News, I'm Marie Rock. Coming up, the disparity in media coverage for missing and murdered indigenous women and relatives cases has once again been brought to the surface. Here's Leah Lemm with the story.Reporter: In the latest episode of the Counter Stories Podcast, the hosts and guests tackle the issue of disparities in media coverage head on. Podcast host, Luz Maria Frias, explains.Luz Maria Frias: Today's theme is going to be reviewing actually something that's been in the news pretty much 24/7, so to speak, which is the coverage around the disappearance of Gabby Petito.Reporter: Gabby Petito had gone missing and her remains recovered in Wyoming. Her case has gotten major and national attention.Luz Maria Frias: We really want to contextualize this and lift up the inconsistencies, the biases in the media, and the treatment of a white centered narrative versus the rest of our community who continues to suffer with missing and murdered members of our own communities and how that doesn't receive any media or very little media.Reporter: Luz Maria Frias and the rest of Counter Stories stress that the issue of media coverage they're raising in no way is aiming to diminish Gabby Petito's case. Instead, the erasure of Native women and relatives in the media among all overlooked communities is compounding and reinforcing that erasure.Luz Maria Frias: In the state of Wyoming over the last decade, there've been 710 indigenous people, mostly girls, and have not received the attention, the media attention nor the investigation, as you said, by law enforcement. Very different than what's going on here.Reporter: Korina Barry is the NDN Action Managing Director at NDN Collective and a guest on the podcast. She recounts a personal connection to MMIW.Korina Barry: There's also, yeah, the reality of the complete lack of coverage for indigenous women, for our two-spirit relatives, for black women, other women of color. What I thought of right away and why I say that trauma was felt as I thought of my cousin, Becky, Rebecca Anderson. She was murdered back in 2015 right here in South Minneapolis, right off of Lake Street, 12th and Lake Street.Reporter: Korina remembers her and her family scrambling, looking for ways to contact journalists to get the word out, get some media coverage.Korina Barry: That wasn't being covered at all. How also to name with this, the lack of police response and engagement for her case. My auntie, just again, she didn't have any answers to the many questions she had. It was very evident that because of my cousin being an indigenous woman, that she wasn't getting the same treatment or the same response or care within her case immediately. All of that, it was just like really, I think, triggering and that we see happen over and over again.Reporter: Another guest, Marisa Cummings, is the CEO of the Minnesota Indian Women's Resource Center and shares her thoughts.Marisa Cummings: This isn't surprising. Settler colonial violence is rooted in white supremacy and gender-based violence. While I agree that there definitely needs to be room for our relatives that identify on the spectrum of identity which our people always have, I also know that our women have been specifically targeted since contact. I like to uplift our women and girls because we have been specifically targeted. We have been sex trafficked since contact. Even though Columbus never touched on what is now known as the United States of America, Columbus' journals and those of his colleagues talk about getting girls as young as nine years old and trafficking them, and so this isn't something we're making up, this is something that's in historical documents. We know that there's always been an erasure of the original people of this land and our women as being oftentimes the backbone of our communities, the ones who carry life forward, the ones who bring life into the world, of course we're going to be targeted to erase ourselves or erase us from this land.Reporter: Entire Counter Stories episode can be found online at counterstoriespodcast.org and on all podcast platforms. For Minnesota Native News, I'm Leah Lemm.

Mom Enough: Parenting tips, research-based advice + a few personal confessions!
A parent’s death is devastating to the surviving spouse and children. But when the death is by suicide, stigma may lead to silence and isolation, and suicide survivors often experience the added pain of guilt, shame, confusion and anger. Rebecca Anderson and her children lost their husband and father to suicide in 2002 and, since then, have taken steps to challenge the stigma of mental illness and suicide, using their experience to support others facing such a tragic loss. Drawing on the Suicide Survivors' Club book series they developed with artist Laurie Phillips, Rebecca and son Aidan join Marti & Erin for a candid discussion of this issue that touches the lives of so many (including Marti, who has strong memories of her grandfather’s suicide when she was seven years old). Have you been touched directly by suicide in your family or community? Why do you think there continues to be such a stigma about it and what steps could you take to help reduce that stigma? [We regret to advise that there is some questionable audio for the first five minutes or so of this episode due to an unnoticed fault somewhere in the recording equipment. We sincerely apologise and ask that our lovely listeners persevere regardless. Thankfully, it doesn't last for long.] This episode of The Writer and the Critic was recorded live at Continuum 11: Southern Skies -- the Melbourne speculative fiction and pop culture convention. In keeping with tradition, the special guests on the podcast were the convention's Guests of Honour, Tansy Rayner Roberts and R.J. (Rebecca) Anderson, who each recommended a favourite novel to talk about. After introductions and some entertaining banter concerning Doctor Who fan fic, chocolate-mousse-filled cronuts and secret author identity crises, the discussion moves on to the books. Rebecca's pick was The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner (15:40) while Tansy chose Growing Rich by Fay Weldon (59:20). Fans of Fay Weldon might also be interested to know that the 1992 mini-series of Growing Rich is available to view in full on YouTube. You're welcome. If you'd skipped ahead to avoid spoilers, it's safe to come back at 1:31:30 for final remarks. For the next episode, Kirstyn has chosen The Godless by Ben Peek while Ian is recommending The Book of the Unnamed Midwife by Meg Elison. Read ahead and join in the spoilerific fun!
