Welcome everyone and Happy New Year. I hope that 2023 has great things in store for all of you and of the many resolutions you have probably made over the past few days, I hope that you stick to some of them. A little shopkeeping before we start. I hope to see all of you at the 2023 International Hoof Care Summit in Cincinnati, Ohio. That is January 24th to the 27th at the Duke Energy Center and the Hyatt Regency. If all goes as planned, I'm hoping to have a booth there for the first time this year with some swag for sale to help support the podcast. So, if you haven't already, go online to americanfarriers.com and click on the International Healthcare Summit link and buy your tickets. If you find yourself there, please stop by the booth and say hi. The summit is such a cool opportunity to learn from and network with so many good folks from our trade. I hope to see you there. Well, as you probably gathered from his introduction, today's guest is from across the pond in Scotland. He was one of the judges of the International at Stoneleigh this year. Over that weekend I had several conversations with Ian and he is, as you will hear, a very easygoing fellow and great to talk to. Despite some hardships that he has come across, his mantra of adapting and overcoming has helped him to carry on through this time. I found it quite inspirational and wanted to share his story with you. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for November 13, 2020 is: farrier • FAIR-ee-er • noun : a person who shoes horses Examples: "His first memory was of a mule his father owned named Hyacinth, and his subsequent memories were all of the saddlebred horses his father trained, or retrained…. His father had begun as a farrier, then added working with sour or broken-down animals and getting them back into the show ring." — Jane Smiley, Horse Heaven, 2000 "To make sure she was suited to the work, Debi apprenticed with a veteran farrier in Florida. Then she signed up for training with Glace Rider, who runs the Pennsylvania Institute for Horseshoeing near State College. For nine weeks, Debi rode with him and learned how to trim hooves, rework shoes and treat laminitis and other foot problems." — Kevin Kirkland, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 18 May 2020 Did you know? Farrier is now usually applied specifically to a blacksmith who specializes in shoeing horses, a skill that requires not only the ability to shape and fit horseshoes, but also the ability to clean, trim, and shape a horse's hooves. When farrier first appeared in English (as ferrour), it referred to someone who not only shoed horses, but who provided general veterinary care for them as well. Middle English ferrour was borrowed from the Anglo-French word of the same form, which referred to a blacksmith who shoes horses. That word derives from the verb ferrer ("to shoe horses"), which can ultimately be traced back to Latin ferrum, meaning "iron."

In today's episode we talk to internationally acclaimed farrier and teacher, Alan Bailey of England. Alan Bailey began shoeing in 1963. He comes from a long line of farriers and blacksmiths. In 1978, he went to teach at the Hereford College. There, Alan became well-known for his teaching method; especially of anatomy and physiology. He is responsible for raising the standard of excellence in the farrier training exams at the Hereford College. Because Alan demanded such a high standard of his students, he has the unique distinction, as a teacher, of never having had a student fail. He is still affectionately remembered by many of his former students. They appreciate that he expected so much and he never gave up on them. In 1988, Alan left the school to become the liaison officer for the Farrier Registration Council of the Worshipful Company of Farriers. He went to Louisville, KY and gave a presentation at the Laminitis Symposium in January of 1989. After that, he became popular on the international lecture circuit. He has spoken at many seminars and clinics all over the world (including eastern and western Australia, Tasmania, Italy, Scotland, Ireland, etc.). He was in high demand for his outstanding teaching style. Alan retired from international lecturing having realized the limitations of his practical know-how, and returned to horse shoeing and veterinary technical consultant work. He revisited the traditional methods as taught in the United Kingdom, relearned horse shoeing to the benefit of the horse, and how not to follow a method determined by history and practiced by the indoctrinated. He suggests that 'the methods subsequently learned and used in his everyday shoeing would now raise awareness of the farriers responsibility to the functionality of the animal. Alan retired from shoeing horses in 2016. Alan shares some of his experiences with running a shoeing practice, working with veterinarians, his friendship with Dr. Doug Butler, and his experiences teaching at the Hereford College in England.     If you would like to contact us with questions relating to your business, specific cases, general horse hoof care questions, or suggestions for future podcasts, please email us at farrierfocuspodcast@gmail.com. Today, I'm speaking with Ray Matthews. Before meeting Ray, I only knew him by his reputation of being the expert on trimming foals. This was because of his time spent as the resident farrier at Windfield's Farm in Oshawa, Ontario. Windfield's was a giant thoroughbred breeding operation that had over 700 horses at its peak. Through his time there, Ray's focus was on improving the rotational and angular limb deformities that would inevitably come up in a breeding operation of that size. I finally got to meet Ray in person at a Foot for Thought clinic we held this spring where he imparted much of his wisdom on an engaged crowd of roughly 50 farriers and vets. I was so impressed with his presentation that I felt many other farriers needed to hear the lessons Ray shared with us so I approached him with my idea of doing an interview. Several months later we found ourselves at the same horse show for a short window of time, so we quickly organized a sit-down. A great farrier and friend Mark Struthers and his partner Lauren Hunkin of Synergy Farm were gracious enough to lend us their dressing room, so please pardon all of the horse show noise is going on in the background. I think you will find that they added some great ambience to the conversation. Ray started shoeing in 1970 and spent 12 years shoeing mixed breeds from quarter horses to gaited horses. Then he was hired on as the resident farrier at Windfields farm where he was responsible for up to 750 horses during each breeding season. His main focus was the foals through two yearlings for the sales. He became a CJF in 1984 and then an AFA examiner for about 12 years. After three years as the resident farrier at Windfield's, he went back to private practice but still retained Windfields as a client at their request. In the mid-nineties, he moved to the U.S. for a year and then settled in the Hudson/St Lazare area of Quebec where he shod mostly dressage horses. He has done some lecturing, consulting and clinics over the years. He started to cut back on his workload about 15 years ago and now he was fully retired. As I suspected Ray had a lot of great advice to share in our conversation. Even the horse in the stall behind us seemed to get excited a time or two punctuating Ray's good points with it loud whinny. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

In this episode I sit down with Sara Vanderpol, CJF. I have run into Sara many times over the years at shoeing competitions, clinics and conventions. Each time she had a new credential with the AFA or had stepped up into the Open Category or she had just made the Canadian Farrier’s Team or she had just come back from working in the UK. On and on she just kept setting the bar higher and higher for her peers. I was always inspired and admittedly sometimes jealous of her achievements and her neverending search for another challenge. Sara began her career in 2011 and currently operates her business out of Elora, Ontario and shoes dressage horses, hunters and pleasure horses.  Recommended Books and Links: The Obstacle Is the Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumph by Ryan Holiday Edward Martin Cultural Exchange – Travis Vern Powell Stratum Tectorium Most Gifted Book: Gregory’s Textbook Of Farriery by Chris Gregory Favourite Work Boots: Wolverine Favourite Rasp: Heller XL legend Lime green Dream Farrier Rig: Stonewell Full Body Favourite Rounding Hammer: Derek Gardner 2 1/4 lb hammer with gamma tennis wrap Favourite Bar Stock: 3/8 X 1  Gas or Diesel Truck: Gas Favourite Pastime: sleep Next On Your Bucket List: Find enjoyment in other things in life outside of horses.   Favourite Brand Of Keg Shoe: Kerckhaert DF Leather or Synthetic Pad: leather Favourite Type Of Horse To Work On: A good one!
