In this episode, Michael Krasny sat down with virtual reality and augmented reality expert and Stanford professor Jeremy Bailenson in an expansive and highly illuminating discussion about the present and future of both VR and AR and the ongoing and imminent connections to AI.Krasny began by asking Bailenson about his evolution as a VR pioneer and its present status. Bailenson spoke of "presence" and the filming of a Sixty Minutes episode complete with a real feeling earthquake and an accompanying panic attack, followed by a discussion of "the proteus effect" and the effect of avatars. Krasny then asked Bailenson about funding and his history with Meta's Mark Zuckerberg and Bailenson spoke about NSF and NIH funding and concerns and safeguards he had if funding is hit under Trump, as well as his past experiences with politicians who sought to stop funding VR and AR research and what he (Bailenson) has done by way of preparation for that possibility. Krasny then asked Bailenson about the downsides and dangers of VR and AR, possible guidelines and his work with athletic teams through STRIVR. The two then spoke about visualization and uses of VR in different sports as well as "zoom fatigue," a phenomenon Bailenson coined the term for, and end of life VR use, and went on to discuss VR and mental health, VR and education and VR in the workplace, its effect on productivity, as well as VR and AR and sex. This rich and illuminating dialogue concluded with talk about the Sphere in Las Vegas, (which Bailenson has been very involved in), and immersive experiences in general, as well as Gen AI and talking in the future to figures from one's past. In the end of the interview, Krasny asked Beilenson to gauge and evaluate the effect and impact of the Stanford environment on his research.

Dr. Warren Hern's book, Abortion in the Age of Unreason: A Doctor's Account of Caring for Women Before and After Roe v. Wade, chronicles the difficult realities of providing abortion care amidst a polarized political and social climate. Drawing from personal experiences, Hern describes protecting patients and staff from aggressive protesters and emphasizes the critical need for abortion services to protect women's health. His work also highlights insights from his research in Latin America, underscoring abortion's role in addressing national and global public health challenges. Hern argues that the recent dismantling of Roe v. Wade has intensified a long-standing crisis, which now endangers democracy as political groups exploit the issue to gain power. His book exposes the real risks of restricted access and urges for political action to safeguard reproductive rights, stressing that women's need for safe abortion services is an essential, ongoing component of healthcare and freedom. Warren M. Hern, M.D., is known to the public through his many appearances on CNN, Rachel Maddow/MSNBC, Sixty Minutes, and in the pages of The Atlantic magazine, The New York Times, Washington Post, and dozens more media. A scientist, Hern wrote about the need for safe abortion services before the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision and was present at the first Supreme Court arguments. In his research and medical work, he pioneered since 1973 the modern safe practice of early and late abortion in his highly influential books and scholarship. A tireless national activist for women's reproductive rights, he is an adjunct professor of anthropology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and holds a clinical appointment in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Colorado medical center. He holds doctorates in medicine and epidemiology. His book is Abortion in the Age of Unreason: A Doctor's Account of Caring for Women Before and After Roe v. Wade. Shermer and Hern discuss Hern's journey into abortion care, abortion history pre- and post-Roe, and the complex procedures involved. They explore the risks of pregnancy versus abortion, societal and political challenges like protests and threats, and the debate over fetal personhood. Hern also delves into the broader implications of abortion rights on democracy and society, shedding light on contentious issues surrounding reproductive health.

Millions of American women are buying guns for self-protection. If you are one of them, or plan to be, Paxton Quigley urges you to arm yourself with information and train with experts so that you can safely defend yourself and your loved ones against any potential violence. Reading this book is the perfect place to start. There are more guns than there are people in the United States. Guns are a fact of life here because of the Second Amendment. Many Americans love their guns, while plenty of other Americans loathe them. Gun sales jumped during the early months of the Pandemic, and continued to rise even after the country returned to work. First-time buyers made up more than 20% of all purchases. Gun violence and intimate partner violence statistics are inseparable, affecting millions of women, families and communities. Because of this harsh reality, many women who would never dream of owning a firearm have joined the ranks of first-time gun owners.Federal background checks for gun purchases hit an all-time high of twenty-one-million in 2020, and almost ten million of these new purchasers were women. If you're one of these women, or if you're considering joining the millions of American women who've taken their lives and personal safety into their own hands, Armed & Female II: Never an Easy Target will help guide you—from making the initial decision to choosing the right firearm and finding the right path for learning how to shoot and care for your gun.Because when it comes to self-defense, what you don't know can hurt you.Paxton Quigley, author of the best seller Armed and Female, is a highly regarded authority on guns and security. She has appeared on more than 300 television shows, including Sixty Minutes, Oprah, The Today Show, Good Morning America, NBC Nightly News, and The Chris Matthews Show, and featured in newspaper and magazine articles including front page profiles in The Wall Street Journal, Investor's Business Daily, The Independent Sunday Review, and the Asahi Shimbun. **Paid subscribers get full access to my interview with Ezzedine Fishere and Bernard Avishai, Dartmouth professors who teach a joint course on Israeli/Palestinian politics.** **The first hour and five minutes of this episode is available to all listeners. Want to hear the whole conversation? Upgrade your subscription here.** As university campuses have become sharply divided in the wake of the October Hamas attack and the ensuing war between Israel and Gaza, Dartmouth has emerged as a model for productive dialogue among students and faculty alike. This is due largely to the efforts of Bernard and Ezzedine, who lead by example in and out of the classroom and have recently been featured on Sixty Minutes, PBS, and elsewhere. In this conversation, they talk about their approaches to teaching, the professional paths that led them to the classroom, and how to honor personal feelings while encouraging intellectual humility over reflexive emotional reaction. Ezzedine also discusses the limits of viewing political history through a colonial/anti-colonial framework and Bernard reflects on the complexities of Zionism and why he was so excited about the Zionist project back in 1968. GUEST BIOS: Bernard Avishai, a Visiting Professor of Government at Dartmouth College, has taught at Hebrew University, MIT, and Duke. He's a Guggenheim fellow and author of four books. A regular contributor to The New Yorker on political economy and Israeli affairs, he has also written for Harper's, The New York Review, The Nation, and New York Times Magazine. Formerly an editor of Harvard Business Review and KPMG's International Director of Intellectual Capital, his upcoming Harper's cover story on Israel's culture wars will be released on January 15. Ezzedine C. Fishere, a renowned Egyptian writer and academic, is currently a visiting professor at Dartmouth College, teaching Middle East politics and cultures. His vast diplomatic experience includes roles in the Egyptian Foreign Service; UN missions in the Middle East and East Africa; policy advising for the Egyptian foreign minister; and senior political advising in Sudan under Kofi Annan; a senior political advisor to the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (UNSCO) in Jerusalem; and heading the political section at the Egyptian Embassy in Tel Aviv. Judyth Vary Baker (1943 - ) born in South Bend, Indiana, is an American artist, writer and poet. Her work in cancer research as a teenager led to later involvement in what Baker and a number of researchers believe was a biological warfare project aimed at eliminating Cuba's Fidel Castro at the height of the Cold War. In 1963, her decision to protest the use of unwitting prisoners for a dangerous cancer experiment essentially destroyed her cancer research career. Baker's intimate relationship with accused Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald, who Baker and others say was involved in the anti-Castro effort, and was framed in a cover-up, has become the subject of documentaries, plays and books since she first spoke out to Sixty Minutes in 1999. Her book Me & Lee: How I came to know, love and lose Lee Harvey Oswald(2010) argues the innocence of Oswald, providing witnesses to Baker's affair with Oswald and documentation of their relationship, which began in New Orleans in April, 1963 and continued until Oswald's last call only two days before the assassination of President Kennedy. To listen to all our XZBN shows, with our compliments go to: www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv.The current edition of The 'X' Chronicles Newspaper is available at www.xchronicles.net.This episode of The ‘X' Zone with Rob McConnell is brought to you by BEAUTIFUL MIND COFFEE - For the coffee that your brain will love, visit Beautiful Mind Coffee, www.beautifulmindcoffee.ca. (This interview is dedicated to my friend Randy Lee, a dedicated public health nurse, who passed away earlier this week.) Justin Smith in his book published earlier this year, The Internet is Not What You Think It Is, argued the internet is addictive, its use of algorithms leaves our lives warped and impoverished and despite these problems there is little or no federal regulatory oversight. Concerning the internet's effects on children, Dr. Linn argues in her recently published work, Who's Raising the Kids, that our digital landscape essentially invades children's privacy in order to use their personal information to drive endless consumerism. Children's screen use, that amounts to upwards of 7.5 hours on average per day - substantially longer for poor and minority children - is having profound negative effects on children of every age. Generally by threatening childhood development and more specifically Dr. Linn noted by, for example, driving childhood anxiety, conflictual relationships with parents and family stress, depression, diminished language development, eating disorders, erosion of creative play, materialistic values, obesity, precocious sexuality, sleep disturbances, underachievement in school and youth violence.During this 35 minute interview Dr. Linn begins by explaining how Mattel's Aristotle (never commercially launched) and Epic's Fortnite are designed to drive revenue. She discusses how digital games erodes or undermines children's creative play, how the use of various marketing tools or approaches drive every digital experience leading to a purchase, for example, by creating "frictionless" online experiences. She discusses the influence corporations have in formal education programming via Sponsored Education Materials (SEMS), discusses what parents can do to monitor children's screen use, what federal policies have been proposed to protect children's privacy and regulate how digital game design and what action the American Psychological Association has taken. Dr. Susan Linn is currently a Research Associate at Boston Children's Hospital and Lecturer on Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. She has lectured on the importance of creative play, the impact of media and marketing on children and the use of puppetry as a therapeutic tool in venues throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. From 2000 to 2015 Dr. Linn was the Founding Director of Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood. Dr. Linn and her puppets appeared in several episodes of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. She has written and appeared in a number of video programs designed to help children cope with issues ranging from mental illness to death and loss. This Secret Should Be Told, a syndicated TV program for children about sexual abuse won her a coveted Action for Children's Television and earned Dr. Linn a New England Emmy Award. With Fred Rogers' production company, Dr. Linn created the acclaimed educational video series Different and the Same: Helping Children Identify and Prevent Prejudice. Different and the Same has been used in classrooms in all 50 states and won numerous awards including the two top prizes from the International Communication Film and Video Competition and the Media Award from the Association of Multicultural Educators. Her book, Consuming Kids helped launch the movement to reclaim childhood from corporate marketers. Her work has been featured on Good Morning America, Today, Sixty Minutes, Dateline, The Colbert Report, and the acclaimed documentary The Corporation. Among other honors, Dr. Linn received an UNIMA-USA citation for excellence; a special award for puppet therapy from Puppeteers of America; A Champion of Freedom Award from the Electronic Privacy Information Center; The Creative Leadership Award from the Puppet Showplace Theater; and, a Presidential Citation from the American Psychological Association for her work on behalf of children.Information on Who's Raising the Kids is at: https://thenewpress.com/books/whos-raising-kids. Discover what's possible when all minds are put to use. Today we're bringing back a special guest, Dr. Temple Grandin. My first interview with Dr. Grandin was almost two years ago. She has since released a new book, Visual Thinking: The Hidden Gifts of People Who Think in Pictures, Patterns, and Abstractions. Dr. Grandin is well known for both her pioneering autism advocacy and her lifelong dedication to animal welfare. Through groundbreaking research aimed at understanding her own autistic mind, Dr. Grandin propelled the awareness of autism during a time when very little was known of it. She is an incredible source of hope for children with autism, their parents, and, ultimately, anyone with a dream. Dr. Grandin became an internationally recognized leader in animal-handling innovations after developing a corral that improved the quality of life of cattle by reducing stress. She has consulted with the USDA and major corporations such as McDonalds, Wendy's, Burger King, Whole Foods, and Chipotle. Today, half of the cattle in North America are handled in facilities she designed. Dr. Grandin is also a prominent author, having written several books on autism and animal behavior. She has been featured on various media outlets and programs, including NPR, the BBC, Larry King Live, 2020, Sixty Minutes, and TED, to name a few. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mark George possesses an original perspective, someone with the ability to look at the world and spaces in it with a nonconformist eye. The longtime designer & furniture maker recently founded August Studios, an East Vancouver building for artists, designers, and makers to work, learn, and collaborate.Born in Miami, his family moved to Seattle when he was 10-years-old. His bank consultant father was battling leukemia, and the city had a cancer research hospital with the necessary treatment. His father's search for new bone marrow became a national story on Oprah, Geraldo, and Sixty Minutes—at the time only blood relative bone marrow transplants were allowed, and he had been adopted. With the help of a voice analyst consultant for the FBI, an extended search and a subsequent lost court case, eventually a donor from Sweden was found a decade later. For cancer recovery, the family relocated to Vermont, where they lived a simple and idyllic life in the middle of the woods. Mark went to school in New York for fine arts, sculpting, and painting. He then spent some time in Philadelphia, before winding up in Vancouver for his Masters in Architecture at UBC. During his career, he has focused on modern, architectural design and worked on projects with a number of architects, artists, and institutions: Mcleod Bovell Modern Houses, the Patkaus, Scott & Scott, Tony Robbins, Ken Lum, Elspeth Pratt, Vito Acconci, Rebecca Bayer, Vancouver Art Gallery, and Burnaby Art Gallery. In this conversation, we examine being a witness to his father's cancer journey growing up and recently learning about his father's autism; how he learned to deconstruct systems and how it's influenced his work; how he constantly see shapes in everything and relates them to places on his body; his experience-based approach to designing spaces and objects; winning first-place in association with Haeccity Studio Architecture for Urbanarium's 2018 ‘The Missing Middle' competition; his woodworking classes based on the late Enzo Mari's open furniture design concept; what fascinates him about how his daughter operates in the world; and much more.
The story of the most famous shipwreck in history, the Titanic, is not complete without Bill Hazelgrove's book, "One Hundred and Sixty Minutes: The Race to Save the RMS Titanic." The basics of the crash into the iceberg are well known. The heart-wrenching details of the half-full lifeboats and the frigid waters are enough to make anyone feel for the victims and their families. But Hazelgrove explains how they all could have been saved, and the missteps that led the nearby boats to shy away from getting involved to save the doomed passengers. He also explains what a certain movie got right... and wrong... about the events on board. The story of the RMS Titanic has been irresistible for over a century, and finally, we have a full picture of why so many were doomed to an unnecessary death. His website can be found at williamhazelgrove.comHe is on social media at twitter.com/rocketman46Support our show at patreon.com/axelbankhistory**A portion of every contribution is given to a charity for children's literacy**"Axelbank Reports History and Today" can be found on social media at twitter.com/axelbankhistoryinstagram.com/axelbankhistoryfacebook.com/axelbankhistory
“Titanic's fate was not preordained, it was ordained by the failings of men in critical moments.” I'm Mark Martin with "Martin's Must Reads" and William Hazelgrove separates fact from fiction, reality from myth in his book One Hundred and Sixty Minutes, The Race to Save the RMS Titanic.
