“It’s hard for me to be back here in a lot of ways. Because it sometimes brings me back to being that little Cynthia, and feeling like my voice doesn’t matter because of the color of my skin or my hair. Like people don’t care about what I have to say. And that’s why this film is so important to me. I want these kids to be heard. I want them to know that they do matter.” Cynthia Martinez is a 12-time marathoner and four-time Boston Marathon qualifier who has run races on four continents, completed 16 international races, and won races in Thailand and Dubai. She's a mom, a journalist (she earned her Master's degree from Columbia), and a filmmaker. And right now, Cynthia is producing a film inspired by her own life experiences and her pursuit of higher education. First Voice Generation follows six first-generation Latinx college students, and documents how they are overcoming the challenges of a global pandemic while pursuing their own collegiate careers. On this episode, Cynthia reflects (powerfully; have tissues nearby) on her own childhood as the granddaughter of Mexican migrant farm workers and hard-working parents who worked multiple jobs, and talks about the struggles her family faced. She talks about abuse and alcoholism in her home growing up, and talks about how she is rebuilding her relationships with her parents now, as a mother herself. She talks about the jobs that led her to becoming a filmmaker — including nannying for the 1% in New York City and working at Univision — and explains the role running has played along the way. Cynthia Tice is the Founder of Lily’s Sweets and got her start in the natural foods industry before green juice was even cool. As supermarkets realized the staying power of natural organic foods, she began consulting retailers on how to launch or build out their natural and organic offerings. She also started advising brands about looking into launching natural and organic products. As a longtime user of stevia, Cynthia began experimenting making chocolate with stevia to satisfy her own need for a no-sugar chocolate, her favorite food. In 2011, the recipe was perfected, and Lily's Sweets was on the shelves at Whole Foods stores nationwide by 2012. Since then, Lily’s Sweets has been recognized by Forbes as a mission-driven company reinventing the packaged goods industry.  Jane Miller is the CEO of Lily's Sweets and has 30 years of executive experience in the food industry. She's worked for both startups and Fortune 500 companies and is also the Founder of JaneKnows.com, a career advice website geared toward young leaders starting their careers. Jane has held several other CEO roles in the natural and organic food industry including Rudi's Organic Bakery, ProYo Frozen Yogurt, and HannahMax Cookie Chips. She also worked for HJ Heinz as Chief Growth Officer, ran the Western Division of Bestfoods Baking, and spent the first 14 years of her career at PepsiCo, where she became the President of the Central Division of Frito Lay Snacks. In 2013, the Denver Business Journal awarded Jane the Lifetime Achievement Award for her mentoring of young professionals and startups. Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn:  How Cynthia got started in the natural food industry and why she chose to make chocolates with stevia  How Cynthia grew her business and team, and how she got funding How Jane found and joined Lily's Sweets and what intrigued her about the company The evolution to more conventional retail stores and how Lily’s Sweets has been giving back to the community Similarities and differences between large and small CPG brands from a managerial standpoint The biggest challenges Cynthia and Jane have faced in growing the business and their advice on pitfalls to avoid The future plans for Lily's Sweets and Cynthia's expectations for her company when she first started Cynthia and Jane's advice to fellow entrepreneurs on building a business In this episode… Cynthia Tice has always loved chocolate. But, the ones in the market weren’t healthy enough for her to eat a whole bar. She could only enjoy a small piece and that was not an option for her. So when stevia was granted GRAS status (Generally Recognized As Safe) in 2008 for use as a sweetener in food products, she set out to create her own chocolate made with stevia. Lily's Sweets was born. Cynthia Tice and the current CEO for Lily’s Sweets, Jane Miller are on a mission to give back to their community by supporting causes and organizations that support the fight against childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. They also mentor young leaders to bring about positive changes in society.  G. Steven Cleere, host of the NexxtLevel Podcast, is joined by Cynthia Tice and Jane Miller from Lily's Sweets to talk about growing a healthy chocolate business. Cynthia and Jane talk about the company's history, giving back to the community, and the main similarities and differences between growing a large CPG company versus a smaller business. As a performing singer and songwriter, Cynthia enjoys the joy and satisfaction that comes from performing across different states in America. One incident she particularly recalls and identifies as the most special moment is when she was performing at a house concert in New Mexico. While playing her song Red Scarf (A song about depression and suicide), Cynthia noted that a woman in her audience was crying. The woman approached her after the show and explained to Cynthia that her son had committed suicide a couple of weeks before that day. She thanked Cynthia for the emotionally deep song she played and praised her for her excellent songwriting skills. Finding her artistic self Always lacking confidence in herself, it's taken Cynthia years to discover and sync with her true music self. When starting out, Cynthia experimented with a diverse range of singing styles, before she finally decided to stick to her vintage style, which she describes as an Acoustic Folk Rock genre. To continue highlighting Mental Health Awareness Month, today’s show shines the spotlight on someone who is truly making a difference in the mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional health of many, many people. Her mission field is the homeless population, those to whom she refers as the “hopeful.” Her unselfishness and compassion are evident in the way she cares for the underserved and needy with her unique brand of fierce love. Cynthia Brinkley Scott is the founder and organizer of Love the HopeFul, an organization that provides for the homeless, or “hopeful.” The mission is to give back to the community, including providing a free Farmer’s Market for the homeless on the third Saturday of each month. The market offers fresh fruits and vegetables, protein, bottled water, baked goods, haircuts, books, and more----all for free. In this episode, we talk about how this mission came about and how Cynthia became involved with what has become her life’s passion. Be grateful for everything Do you believe that the impossible is possible? Cynthia has seen miracle after miracle in securing food and goods for the homeless. She secured a partnership with Costco through a friend, and she was blown away with the volume of donated goods. She says she would’ve been happy with a case of water, but she received cartload upon cartload of goods. Cynthia operates on the principle that if you’re grateful for everything, then God will bless you in abundance, and this mantra has proven itself true over and over again. Now, she is usually able to bless up to 8 organizations in one day, just from what they receive in donated goods from Costco.   TWEET: My life purpose is to motivate and inspire people of all languages all over the world. #chasingdreams Motivating and inspiring people Are you still chasing the dreams you had when you were 18? Most of us have big changes to our dreams since the age of 18---but not Cynthia. When she was 18, she wrote out her life’s desire, which was to motivate and inspire people all over the world--people of all languages. This has become her mission and purpose statement, and she has always been geared toward giving back. When she prayed for God to help her, He said, “When you need help, go help someone else.” This has become another mantra by which she lives day to day. She shares about an intense personal crisis that resulted in many tears, which Cynthia views as a way to water the path to her future.  TWEET: Love always comes first. #chasingdreams Find a better word Have you thought much about the negative words we use every day? Cynthia refuses to call the homeless anything but “hopeful,” because it’s her nature to always try to think of a more positive word for negative things. She says there is always a “better word” we can use. The word “hopeful” provides Cynthia with many opportunities to give back to the community. In our everyday life, we can flip the negative connotation to a positive perspective---and make a huge difference. TWEET: Who are you gonna call: 1-800-FEAR or 1-800-FAITH? #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take: “Be open and receptive to the plan God has for you.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [:33] How Cynthia and I were introduced [3:15] Cynthia’s partnership with Costco [5:25] Cynthia’s early life and dreams [6:29] Giving back with your life purpose [8:39] A personal crisis that turned it all around [14:05] 1000 pairs of shoes [16:42] Who are YOU gonna call? Welcome back to the Healthpreneur Podcast! Today we have a great episode—as we always do—with Cynthia Thurlow. We’re going to dive into her fascinating journey and I’ll just give you a few highlights here before the episode. So, Cynthia started out as a western-trained nurse practitioner—she grew up in the classic medical setting. But she later realized that she wanted to go do her own thing, and ended up starting her own functional nutrition practice. She now works with clients all around the world and supports women with various hormone issues. The really cool thing about Cynthia is that she’s been able to bridge that gap between traditional western medicine and the holistic side of things. There's tons of great stuff in this episode—we’re going to talk all about what I mentioned above as well as outsourcing, the entrepreneurial spirit, and transitioning from a 9-5 job to owning your own business. And I’ll even bring my love of flying into the mix.  In this episode, Cynthia and I discuss:  How Cynthia incorporates both the western and holistic sides of medicine into her practice.  The entrepreneurial spirit—is it in your DNA, or not?   The long climb to the top.  Being an introverted entrepreneur.  What a real emergency is.  Losing the “security” of a 9-5 job.  4:00 - 10:00 - Cynthia’s journey and the niche she created.  10:00 - 16:00 - “Becoming” an entreprenuer.   16:00 - 22:00 - Why Cynthia is always calm, cool and collected.  22:00 - 28:00 - Trusting in the process.  28:00 - 32:00 - The Rapid-five questions.

Check out her amazing work at www.hopigirlsilver.com. Cynthia grew up in Bakersfield, CA. During the summers, she would spend time with her family back home. There she watched family members that were silversmiths. When she went to college she would ask “which family member made that for you?”  Only to realize that not everyone can get their jewelry from their family members. She was determined to work with silver, but thought she would do it when she retired and could move to the rez. She is currently in a Master’s program in health (epidemiology research) and plans to pursue her Ph.D. In this episode we discuss:  Her solo trips to the rez and the experience of Urban natives trying to engage back home.
