Welcome to another episode of Monday Night Live, hosted by Derek Arden. This week, we are delighted to welcome back Tracy Hooper, founder of The Confidence Project and author of "The Now Hello." Tracy, joining us from Portland, Oregon, is here to share her expertise on "Confident Conversations." With a rich background as a former TV news reporter and anchor, Tracy brings a wealth of knowledge and practical advice to the table. Introduction to Tracy Hooper In this episode, Derek Arden introduces Tracy Hooper, highlighting her impressive background and the significance of her third appearance on the show. Tracy's journey from TV news to founding The Confidence Project is both inspiring and instructive. Her transition showcases her dedication to helping others build confidence in their conversational skills. The Importance of Confident Conversations Tracy emphasizes the critical need for confident conversations in today's digital age, where face-to-face interactions are often replaced by texting and emailing. She notes that many people have become rusty in their conversational abilities due to the prevalence of digital communication. Tracy highlights the importance of rediscovering the art of engaging dialogue to build stronger, more meaningful connections. Lessons from Tracy's Life Tracy shares personal stories about learning conversation skills from her parents. Her mother, in particular, played a significant role in teaching her the fundamentals of inclusive and engaging conversation. These early experiences around the dinner table taught Tracy the value of including everyone in a discussion. Additionally, she recounts anecdotes from her career, including learning from seasoned news professionals like Jane Miller, which showcase the practical application of these skills. Techniques for Confident Conversations Tracy offers a range of practical techniques for engaging in confident conversations. She advises giving genuine compliments on accomplishments or traits rather than appearances. Using Kickstarter questions like "what," "how," and "tell me more" can spark meaningful dialogue. Tracy encourages a mindset of constant learning and attentiveness to non-verbal cues to enhance curiosity. Researching people before meetings to find common ground, making connections through mutual acquaintances, and leveraging active listening as a crucial skill are also key techniques Tracy discusses. These methods are vital for building rapport and maintaining engaging conversations. Practical Applications Tracy shares practical applications of her techniques, such as remembering and pronouncing names correctly, breaking and entering into conversations gracefully, and the art of including others in discussions. She offers tips on handling situations where one might feel left out or need to leave a conversation politely. Tracy's advice is both practical and empathetic, designed to make everyone feel valued and included. The Goodbye Formula One of the standout segments of the interview is Tracy's four-step process to end conversations respectfully: Thank the person, acknowledge something they said, offer a farewell phrase, and use a goodbye gesture. This formula ensures that conversations end on a positive note, leaving both parties feeling respected and appreciated. Personal Insights Tracy also shares her family dynamics and how she taught her children the art of conversation. Family dinners and open dialogue were significant in reinforcing the importance of confident conversations. Tracy reflects on how these skills can build confidence in interactions with anyone, from prominent figures to everyday acquaintances. Her personal insights underscore the universal applicability of her techniques and their importance in fostering meaningful connections. Q&A Session The episode concludes with a lively Q&A session between Derek and Tracy. They explore common sense practices that are often overlooked ...

They say that everyone loves a good comeback story. Rudi's is writing the first chapter of a new one. Founded in 1976, the Colorado-based brand markets organic and gluten free breads, including sourdough loaves, English muffins, wraps and buns, and has fostered a loyal consumer following at natural and conventional retailers including Whole Market and Kroger. In 2014, natural foods company Hain Celestial acquired Rudi's from private equity firm Charterhouse Equity Partners for $61.3 million. At the time, Rudi's generated nearly $85 million in annual retail sales, according to published reports. Unfortunately, brand sales and distribution regressed under new ownership. By May 2020, revenue was down to $35 million while ACV in the natural channel, which had been at 98%, plunged into the 30s. That month, Hain unloaded Rudi's to Mayfair Equity Partners, which incorporated the brand into its Promise Gluten Free bakery business. Over the next two years, Rudi's saw two CEOs arrive and depart, but in October 2022 Mayfair enlisted board member Jane Miller, who previously led the brand from 2008 to 2014, to helm the company. She also tapped experienced food and beverage executive Adam Hertel as chief sales officer. Their plan to breathe new life into Rudi's has evolved over the past year and came with the realization that sales and distribution couldn't return to 2014 levels without a significant shift in strategy and investment in innovation. In this episode, Miller and Hertel explained how they identified the most pressing issues at Rudi's and detailed its close working relationships with its retail partners to develop new products, including Texas toast and breakfast sandwiches. Show notes: 0:43: Interview: Jane Miller, CEO & Adam Hertel, Chief Sales Officer, Rudi's – Taste Radio editor Ray Latif spoke with Miller and Hertel at NOSH Live Winter 2023 about their respective paths to Rudi's, how they incorporated market research and consumer trends into the company's innovation strategy and how they factor timing and retailer resets into new product development and what gave them confidence to play in new categories. They also discussed how Gen Z and Alpha consumers fit into Rudi's business strategy and brand positioning as a whole, why “95 percent vs. 99 percent certainty” is a rule they abide by and whether they advocate for team members to have an entrepreneurial mindset or prefer for ideation and strategy to be generated by leadership. Brands in this episode: Rudi's Bakery, Jimmy Dean, Uncrustables

You've snacked on the products that Jane Miller has helped bring to market.Jane Miller, Leeds alumna and a member of the Leeds Advisory Board, has more than three decades of executive experience in the food industry, spanning start-ups to Fortune 500 companies. She was CEO at Lily's Sweets and has held several other CEO roles in the natural and organic industry, including Rudi's Bakery, ProYo High-Protein Ice Cream, and HannahMax Cookie Chips. She also worked at Hostess, which she helped bring out of bankruptcy, as well as HJ Heinz, Bestfoods Baking, and PepsiCo. And she's generous with career advice. She wrote a book, Sleep Your Way to the Top (and other myths about business success), founded the career advice website janeknows.com, and is the co-founder of Haevn, which helps students launch their careers. EPISODE QUOTES:On staying self-aware in business[00:17:23] If you've ever had a great success, don't ever assume it was all because of you or the other side of that same coin. Which is, if you have a great failure, don't ever feel like it was all because of you. So, with Lily's, you know, I was really blessed in the sense that we did have this huge macro trend that was going on. We did have a founder who had really created an amazing product. We were first to market. So, we had that sort of opportunity. And we had a team of people that just did some amazing things and aggressively went after sales and marketing. But we had very strong financial management. You know, in many cases with young companies, you don't have the right funding to be able to make the business work, and you're trying to really bootstrap it. So, you know, I think what I've learned over the course of my career, Is that, you know, every success I've had, I've had some role in it. And every failure I've had, I've had some role in. And if you take it for that, which is “What did you learn?”On running your own race[00:08:36] We all have this kind of pressure to figure out how we create in this world, the impact that we want to create. And run your own race, which I did get from Cheryl Strayed, was really about this idea that don't compare yourself to others. Set your own goals and compare yourself to what your goals were. And I think it's such an important concept because if you are very clear on what's important to you, then you can judge yourself against yourself. So when you're trying to start a business, not going on social media and saying, “Oh my gosh, somebody's trying to do the exact same thing.” Running your own race really starts with you being very clear about what's important to you. On creating your own advisory board[00:26:44] I think the core of developing a successful business is surrounding yourself, not with just a great team of people that you've hired, but people around that you can trust. So, a personal advisory board is almost like a board of directors you'd have for a company, but these are people that you have selected that can surround you, and you can go to for advice. It's really important because one of the things I've seen many entrepreneurs is it's, it can be kind of lonely. You feel like you're the only person that is dealing with the issues that you're dealing with when in fact you're not.SHOW LINKS:Guest's Profile:Profile at Leeds School of BusinessJane Miller on LinkedInMore About This Guest:Haevn's WebsiteJaneKnows.Com

Jane Miller - Healing Companions
Cynthia Tice is the Founder of Lily’s Sweets and got her start in the natural foods industry before green juice was even cool. As supermarkets realized the staying power of natural organic foods, she began consulting retailers on how to launch or build out their natural and organic offerings. She also started advising brands about looking into launching natural and organic products. As a longtime user of stevia, Cynthia began experimenting making chocolate with stevia to satisfy her own need for a no-sugar chocolate, her favorite food. In 2011, the recipe was perfected, and Lily's Sweets was on the shelves at Whole Foods stores nationwide by 2012. Since then, Lily’s Sweets has been recognized by Forbes as a mission-driven company reinventing the packaged goods industry. Jane Miller is the CEO of Lily's Sweets and has 30 years of executive experience in the food industry. She's worked for both startups and Fortune 500 companies and is also the Founder of JaneKnows.com, a career advice website geared toward young leaders starting their careers. Jane has held several other CEO roles in the natural and organic food industry including Rudi's Organic Bakery, ProYo Frozen Yogurt, and HannahMax Cookie Chips. She also worked for HJ Heinz as Chief Growth Officer, ran the Western Division of Bestfoods Baking, and spent the first 14 years of her career at PepsiCo, where she became the President of the Central Division of Frito Lay Snacks. In 2013, the Denver Business Journal awarded Jane the Lifetime Achievement Award for her mentoring of young professionals and startups. Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn: How Cynthia got started in the natural food industry and why she chose to make chocolates with stevia How Cynthia grew her business and team, and how she got funding How Jane found and joined Lily's Sweets and what intrigued her about the company The evolution to more conventional retail stores and how Lily’s Sweets has been giving back to the community Similarities and differences between large and small CPG brands from a managerial standpoint The biggest challenges Cynthia and Jane have faced in growing the business and their advice on pitfalls to avoid The future plans for Lily's Sweets and Cynthia's expectations for her company when she first started Cynthia and Jane's advice to fellow entrepreneurs on building a business In this episode… Cynthia Tice has always loved chocolate. But, the ones in the market weren’t healthy enough for her to eat a whole bar. She could only enjoy a small piece and that was not an option for her. So when stevia was granted GRAS status (Generally Recognized As Safe) in 2008 for use as a sweetener in food products, she set out to create her own chocolate made with stevia. Lily's Sweets was born. Cynthia Tice and the current CEO for Lily’s Sweets, Jane Miller are on a mission to give back to their community by supporting causes and organizations that support the fight against childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. They also mentor young leaders to bring about positive changes in society. G. Steven Cleere, host of the NexxtLevel Podcast, is joined by Cynthia Tice and Jane Miller from Lily's Sweets to talk about growing a healthy chocolate business. Cynthia and Jane talk about the company's history, giving back to the community, and the main similarities and differences between growing a large CPG company versus a smaller business. The world of food and beverage is filled with darling passion brands. They’re fun, nimble and innovative. It’s no wonder that so many people want to work for them. To be blunter, it can really suck. Politics, unwritten rules, mean people—it is all out there. But that is just the external stuff. What happens when you do things to sabotage yourself? Self-sabotage happens a lot and many times you don’t even know you are doing it…until it is too late! So after thirty years in business, making lots of mistakes and then rebounding, I decided it was time to help the next generation of leaders avoid the School of Hard Knocks. This week's podcast episode features Jane Miller, CEO of Lily's, a maker of sugar-free chocolate. Originally broadcast on ACG's GrowthTV, Miller speaks with ACG CEO Tom Bohn about leading Lily's through the disruption caused by COVID-19 and the support the business has received from its private equity backer, VMG Partners. Although the company is in a strong financial position, Miller says Lily's has had to act quickly to protect the safety of employees. She also describes how her leadership style has changed at a time when everyone is working remotely, and how the company has adapted its digital marketing efforts and messaging in the current environment. Lily's was featured in the March/April cover story of Middle Market Growth magazine, which highlighted VMG and the entrepreneur-led brands it has helped scale, including Spindrift, Justin's, Perfect Snacks and many others. That article is available in the MMG archive: middlemarketgrowth.org/cover-growing-a-healthy-portfolio/. To watch interviews with Jane Miller and many other business leaders, visit acg.org/growthtv.

On today's episode of Big Girl Money we cover a news story about an inspiring new line of Matell Barbie dolls. Next we interview C.E.O. of Lily's Chocolate, Jane Miller. Our guest this week is Jane Miller, the CEO of Lily’s sweets. Lily’s make a line of delicious chocolate bars, baking bits and baking bars that have less than 1 gram of sugar per serving. Jane represents a slightly different type of guest for us. She's a CEO with 35 years of food business experience... but not a founder. Jane’s background is as a high level executive at places like Heinz and Frito Lay, and she joined Lily's with a specific goal in mind: help scale the business. With a new look, new SKUs, and the rising tide of awareness around the drawbacks of too much sugar, the brand is poised for mainstream success. This role is a new challenge for Jane as well. She’s used to coming in and fixing things that are broken at big organizations. Now she’s on a total rocket ship ride - which brings a whole new set of obstacles to overcome. In this episode, we talk about the Lily’s rebrand, Jane’s personal philosophy of "running your own race," and the surprising way they use data to find their sweet spot. On today’s episode, Patti speaks Women Leaders Board Member and University of Virginia Senior Associate AD and SWA, Jane Miller! Jane Miller is widely known, rightly so, as a gold standard administrator. What many people don’t know is that she started her career as a coach, and really really good one. She has won 2 NCAA national championships, had six final four appearances, and is in 5 different Lacrosse Halls of Fame. And although she spent the last 35-years at University Virginia, her impact is much broader than one campus. Jane has served on many national boards, and she was the first Women Leaders SWA appointee to the NCAA DI Board of Directors. A very important national role that Jane excelled in. Jane is an advocate for the SWA designation – the Senior Woman Administrator and talks about the opportunities and platform that role provided her over the years. I hope you enjoy our conversation, and remember, we are Women Leaders! Head to womenleadersincollegesports.org for more about us and to become a member! On a warm summer evening in the friendly town of Beckley, West Virginia on August 26, 1981, twenty seven year old school teacher Cynthia Jane Miller was over the moon with excitement for her wedding the following day to police officer Gary O'Neal. The two were very much in love and had been anxiously waiting for Friday, August 27th, to exchange their vows and begin life together as husband and wife. While Gary visited with his father the evening of August 26th to go over wedding details, Cynthia decided to stay at home and tend to last minute work related activities so as not to have it hanging over her on their one weekend of wedded bliss. Suddenly in the very home which she and Gary planned to make a lifetime of beautiful memories together, darkness cloaked its evil upon Cynthia when the devil in the flesh came calling and saw to it she would never celebrate her 28th birthday nor her wedding the following evening. Gunned down in the living room of her very own home which investigators described as a slaughter up close and personal. But who would want to harm and kill this much loved, compassionate, joyful and talented young woman who was respected and well liked by all who knew her? The perpetrator of this heinous crime has never been brought to justice in the 38 years since her life was taken away from her. No sign of forced entry into the home. Nothing was disturbed. No robbery, no struggle, no sexual assault. The only evidence left behind was Cynthia’s blood spattered clothing. It’s as if the killer vanished into thin air. All that remains are the broken hearts and spirits of family, friends, and all who knew her. Law Enforcement has had very little to work on in the 38 years since this cold-blooded monster took the life of this young woman with so much promise and dreams yet to fulfill. The Beckley WV Police Department has never given up on Cynthia’s case. Generations of police investigators have combed through the massive amount of information meticulously collected and maintained throughout the years. There have been persons of interests since the original investigation that still remain on police radar but there is no binding evidence to tie them to the murder....at least not yet. With good old fashion police work and the advancement of forensic science technology to now include genetic genealogy, the criminals days in the sun are running out, and many are now being apprehended in very cold cases that were once deemed hopeless. Investigators believe Cynthia’s case is solvable with the right piece of missing information or piece of evidence. Someone knows something and it’s time to step out from the shadows and do the right thing by coming forward, letting go of the burden and, in doing so, giving Cynthia the peace she so much deserves. As we discuss and examine Cynthia's life and the night of her brutal murder, perhaps you will be the one to help Crack This Case!Join me, Sharon McHenry Power, the Host of Crack This Crack, to hear Cynthia’s life story of 27 years and to discuss and examine the mystery surrounding her murder. Let’s spread awareness of Cynthia’s relatively unknown case and start shaking things up. What is that supposed to mean? Due to one unfortunate decision, you're broke and your best friend is a millionaire. How do you stop yourself from poisoning a long-term friendship with toxic jealousy or reverse the depressive spiral it's slowly throwing you into? How can you focus on cultivating a more confident vocal tone when conversing in a language not your own? Is it possible to get people interested in something they don't prioritize? Is there room for a relationship with someone who's needy in the life of a true workaholic? What do you do when your new wife says she's not sure she's turned on by you anymore? It’s 2018, but the sexual harassment scandals and #MeToo movement that closed out 2017 are sure to shape the year – and years – ahead. From Hollywood Boulevard to Main Street, USA, no industry has been spared. But for all the turmoil that business leaders are either witnessing or enduring, they may have an opportunity to seize this moment and establish a dramatically new normal. In this podcast, Littler Principal Cindy-Ann Thomas and Jane Miller, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of The Gallup Organization, offer in-depth discussion and analysis of the answers to these questions and more: - The link between sexual harassment and the presence of women in leadership positions - Shifting mindsets about how organizations evaluate “financial interests” and the benefits of being gender-diverse - How organizations should guard against any backlash associated with the #MeToo movement, and - Whether new “rules” will need to be carved out for how men and women interact in the workplace.

He then ventured to Los Angeles, acting in films, television shows, and commercials throughout the 1980s and early '90s. After a meeting with renowned mystic healer Tim Heath, Elliott connected the dots of many chance meetings with strangers from the past several months—people claiming they had been sent to him for “healing” by their guru in India, or their psychic in New York. David Elliott learned to recognize his unique ability to feel, move, and manipulate energy; the healing work got easier, and the “reluctant” phase of his life dissipated. By 1997, his acting career had ended and he was seeing more than twenty clients a week. As David recalls, “The Universe obviously had a plan for me, so I decided to get out of the way and do the healing work.” David has had a successful healing practice in Los Angeles for the past 15 years.Show notes are here: http://www.whispersradio.com/?p=1016
