#76: Retiring early to travel the world is a common goal for FIRE aspirants. But full-time travel can lose appeal quickly. Churches and temples quickly start to look the same. Gardens and palaces quickly look the same. When you're responsible for creating all the structure to your day – every day for weeks and months on end – it gets exhausting and can feel purposeless. But what if you could design early retirement travel around language learning?By enrolling in language immersion courses at local language schools in countries you travel to, you not only learn how to communicate conversationally with locals. You also get structured and even vibrant exposure to local culture, food, people, and activities because being situated in a school or university environment creates that exposure and structure for you naturally. This week, I invited Ingrid, a software engineer turned early retiree and successful travel blogger, to share about her early retirement experience pursuing language learning through travel immersion courses. Making language learning the focus of early retirement has brought joy and purpose and structure to her travel experiences. We discuss:How Ingrid came up with and built strong confidence in her FIRE numberHer asset allocation and withdrawal rateHer blog's revenue contribution (and what helped her blog get traction)How Ingrid plans travel around language immersion coursesHow she meets and connects with locals when she travels, plus her advice for solo female travelersHow she handles health insurance and healthcare costs as an early retiree and when she's travelingHow she believes one's emotional well being and personality change in early retirementHow she contemplated family and children alongside her early retirement plan, why she decided against having a family, and her thoughts on loneliness, dating, and companionship as an early retireeWhat Ingrid would have done differently if she could do it over againCheck it out here:https://hackyourwealth.com/language-learning-courses-retirement-travel-immersionHave you ever studied abroad or taken a language immersion course in another country? Ingrid was raised by a mom who was abusive physically and emotionally (Ingrid has forgiven her mom, afterall her mom herself was raped at age 3! ) Ingrid's youth was far from easy. Abusive upbringing, raped at age 14, And then depressed and suicidal even trying to take her own life! At 19 she had an a opportunity to immigrate to America and she saw this as her ticket to escape! Holding three jobs (cleaning, washing details and working in retail), going to college and raising a daughter as a single mom she still found a way to finish top of her class. But not without constant struggle and hardship! When hurricane George hit, puerto rico she saw an opportunity to move to miami. Speaking with VERY little english, daughter in tow, she boarded a plane and headed for Miami Still paycheck to paycheck there were so many nights she went to bed with an empty stomach so she could feed her daughter. When she finally turned to god and surrendered, her now husband Jeff came into her life. Ingrid finally felt like she she could breathe. Little did Ingrid know then that her true journey was just beginning! There would be a 50lb weight gain, a deadly asthma diagnosis, and the 2008 crash where her husband's income disappeared overnight! Ingrid made a promise to god.” If you give me an opportunity to live and see my baby grow and to be with my husband I will give my life to you!” She got a Clear message that night to focus on her health and that everything would change. General Motors no longer crash tests on animals because of Ingrid Newkirk. Spay and neuter clinics came into existence because of Ingrid Newkirk. There is more compassion, empathy, and far less suffering in the world because one woman decided to use her human privilege and speak up. Ingrid—the co-founder and president of PETA—started a revolution. Her rallying cry calls for kindness for all sentient beings, and her message has sprung millions into action. In this episode, Ingrid enlightens us with the extraordinary stories of animals, educates us on the horrendous ways humans exploit other beings, and ultimately gives us hope for a kinder future. Drop any preconceived notions you may have about PETA. Ingrid doesn’t fear monger, bully, or harass. She tells the information as it is, and her message of kindness will win your loyalty to the compassionate cause. Some folks think it's odd that as a Tri coach, I’m willing to interview other triathlon coaches and showcase their work, somehow weakening my own position. The truth is, I'm inquisitive about how other coaches work and also about the journey to their current role. Take today's guest, Ingrid Loos-Miller. She is a triathlon coach based in Southern California and she has a training group called Fearless Endurance very similar in philosophy to my own SWAT Inner Circle. So here we have two coaches, several thousand miles apart, who have never met and yet who have arrived at very similar points via a completely different pathway in order to help other athletes. That is fascinating to me. In today’s conversation we chat about: How Ingrid lost over 25kg in just over 8 months to get started on her triathlon journey, and her weight loss strategies Exerting power over food Becoming a Weight Watchers nutrition coach How to train to be a lifeguard Becoming one of the ONLY female surf lifesavers in Southern California Taking on IM St George at 60 The philosophy underpinning Fearless Endurance To find out more about Ingrid you can follow her on: Facebook Instagram Fearless Endurance To find out more about Simon’s SWAT programme, please click HERE To comment on this podcast, please visit Simon's Facebook page HERE Visit Simon's website for more information about his coaching programmes For any questions please email Beth@TheTriathlonCoach.com
