Yesssssss, we're out of the Q and A wormhole and back into the Childrenverse, where the humans are terrible, the world building is amazing, and all the uplifted critters can totally give consent. We are starting our three part adventure through book two of the Children of Time series. PLEASE READ CHILDREN OF TIME FIRST! And ideally go back and listen to our episodes on it, cause Adrian is the master of using every part of the worldbuilding. For this first part we discuss the problem of figuring out what it's like to be a Portid, or an Octo, or anybody really. Sometimes connected to the problem of other minds, I feel like it's really the problem of separate minds. But is it really a feature, or an uplifted bug? ALSO! Season two of the boys was some of the most messed up content I'd ever seen, until the first three episodes of season three. It's all brilliant, but yeah, hard to imagine a more Hobbesian Leviathan than Homelander. Homelander's Leviathan. THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN. THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN! Sorry, couldn't resist that one. We're back, and we're talking one of our favorite shows, The Boys! This episode we're focused on the Stormfront arc in season two, some of the best writing ever put to tv. We cover how perfectly the season unpacks the problem of white christian nationalism. Enjoy! The last of our digitally uploaded selves will now wind down for your listening pleasure. Our biological selves will again meet to create new digital versions, but for these ones, their time in stasis will be followed by a brief flash of existence before a return to the long dark. We discuss Archive and all the weird Frankensteiny possibilities and horrors beyond human comprehension we're likely gonna build because we can't just accept the sweet embrace of death for ourselves and our loved ones. We survived, and yet like all Culture protagonists we've been fundamentally changed by the experience. Can we return to the safety and normalcy of other sci-fi after this? Will we eventually succumb to ennui and ask to be frozen in stasis until Banks is reincarnated and starts writing again? Guess we'll have to do another culture book to find out. In the meantime, here's a discussion of what happens when you try to just war theory at a scale that precludes the idea of mere survival as an objective.  Content: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consider_Phlebas Editing by Luisa Lyons, check out her amazing podcast Filmed Live Musicals: http://www.filmedlivemusicals.com/ Support us at Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/0G Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/0gPhilosophy Join our Facebook discussion group (make sure to answer the questions to join): https://www.facebook.com/groups/985828008244018/ Email us at: philosophersinspace@gmail.com If you have time, please write us a review on iTunes. A book so big we barely manage to cover even a piece of it in three episodes. Don't be deceived by the vaguely unsatisfying nature of the narrative on first reading, this book is a culture ship packed with philosophy. In part two our minds reel as we attempt to grasp the scale of the Culture and the space it inhabits.
